IBook g4 intermittent display

I've read in a lot of forums about people having problems with ibook displays but I haven't been able to find anything that quite matches my problem.
My Ibook has been dropped a number of times and survived - it has numerous small cracks and the bottom of the plastic screen edge on the left hand side, where it attaches to the hinge, is pulling away from the screen. But until about a month ago it was working fine. I had been carrying it around in a bag all day (not using it) and when I got it home and opened it up, the screen was just black - restarting it did nothing. the sound and lighting buttons work, and the backlight is on, but the screen is black, and it doesn't seem to start up.
It came to life again yesterday after I had left it sitting in its bag, not plugged in. I put it to sleep that night and the next morning the screen was black again. nothing seems to fix it - restarting it, putting it to sleep, resetting power manager. I can't even put the startup disks in, because nothing shows on the screen when I do, not even the mouse. Does anyone know what is going on?

Hey fleur,
then went black with the screen light still on. I restarted again and it made the memory-not-recognised beep.
So does it chime normally now?
The computer still stayed black and has been ever since.
Do you think it's booting?
If so us a flashlight on the screen, any image?
I thought it might be the video card but pressing on the left-hand side of the computer is supposed to help with that. It did nothing.
Well that's for the G3 and what is actually there in both G3 and G4 is the hard drive and people have pressed there too hard and heard a crunch when their hard drive was crunched. If you lift the keyboard, Airport card and the RAM shield you the GPU would be to the left of the foreword end of the RAM slot. It's under a large heat sink so you have to press a bit hard but not too much.
Where are you located?

  • IBooks is not displaying some books

As many others, iBooks is not displaying all my collection.
If I manually try to add any missing epub (by dragging and dropping) I get a message saying "This book is already in your library. Do you want to replace it with the one you're adding?" And when I click on "replace" I get a message saying "The Operation could not be completed. Operation not permitted". In the iPad there is no problem with this books whatsoever...
Someone in apple is looking to that? It is tiring not hearing anything about a new version of iBooks with the fixes, cause is pretty clear that the problem is iBooks itself.
    Please help.
    Thanks.

I was able to get the books to sync by re-creating them. Most were originally Word files saved in ePub format using Aspose add-in for Word. I recreated these and put in a new folder and added that to iTunes. Not sure what exactly fixed it, but all books now sync.

'Music' displays but won't play. Settings appear correct and iPhone (3G)  is selected for output.  Startup screen intermittently displays with the lower pause/play volume bar for no clear reason..... developed at the same time as play failure.  Ideas????

    Thank you for the replies.
Appearane of 'Music' functions (I>>   > II   <<I,   plus volume slider)  on the lock/log in screen (when first turning on the iPhone) thus far seems without pattern, i.e. regardless of which if any applications are up in the background, and indeed even when all have been quit.
All visual aspects of 'Music' appear normal after launch including the title scroll across the top in vertical mode. However, while pressing play (>) converts the play (>) icon to pause (II), selected song does not play and the elapsed time bar (upper end between the track count and the repeat/shuffle icons) remains stationary at 0:00 or at any point to which it is dragged.  When using home sharing this same problem persists regardless of what output is selected.
Hope that may prompt a thought somewhere.

  • IBook, 23" Cinema Display and a G4 DP 867

I'm trying to make a iBook 12" work with the 23" Cinema Display without the use of a VGAtor. I was thinking I could run it through the G4 DP 867 using one of Apple's apps. Can this be done?

I've never been able to make a machine boot off of a drive that isn't on or a clone of the same kind of machine...
Mac OS X is hardware-independent. As long as the version of Mac OS X is supported by the computer you're using, it can startup any Mac. We have a single disk image of software at work (that includes all of our application and specific user options already set-up in the Dock, etc.) and that disk image will install and run on 400MHz G4 PowerBooks, 1.0GHz eMacs, Dual 1.25GHz PowerMac G4s, and even the current 2.3GHz Dual Core G5 towers. Mac OS X includes all the drivers for all the supported hardware and only the drivers you need are enabled when you startup.

  • Intermittent display after wake with Samsung under 10.6, using MDP- VGA

I have an early 2009 Mac Mini, which was supplied with Leopard but upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.1. It is connected to a 26" Samsung LCD TV, using the Mini Display Port -> VGA adaptor.
Recently, we noticed that after waking from sleep, if the Mac Mini was set to the native TV resolution (1360x568), the screen would only appear intermittently, appearing for a fraction of a second every few seconds. This may be described as 'flicker' in other forum posts:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2154973&tstart=60
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1933065&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1756755&tstart=0
This not being my first issue with an Apple product, I tried a few typical steps to correct it. All of the following made no difference:
    * Unplugging and replugging in the display port -> VGA adaptor
    * Updating the adaptor firmware (the updater claimed it was already at 1.03, as I recall)
    * Unplugging all peripherals
    * Creating a new account and logging in as that
    * Reseting the PRAM and/or NVRAM
    * Starting in Safe Mode
    * Reinstalling Snow Leopard on top (resulting in a 10.6 install, but with retained settings).
If the Mini was set to a lower resolution, like 1024x768, the display would work upon waking from sleep without any problems.
I have just downgraded the Mini to 10.5.6 (from the provided restore disk), and the problem has disappeared, so it seems like this is some bad interaction between Snow Leopard and the hardware.
I'm hesitant to switch to using the DVI->VGA (or DVI->HDMI) connections, because I've already spent quite a bit of money on this setup and don't think I should have to pay yet more. However, I'm also reluctant to make an appointment at the genius bar, because it takes an age, and there's no guarantee that they'll be able to replicate the problem.
Anyway, I'll probably try carefully upgrading to see which exact step introduces the problem; if I find anything out, I'll post here. However, if anyone has any advice or tips, please do let me know.
    (added safe mode)

That's good detective work you've done, lazyatom. From the sounds of it, it would seem Apple has messed up the HDCP implementation somehow, at least as it applies to your particular configuration. But let me ask this? The interval at which the screen flashes back on, is it very well metered, meaning not at random intervals? And is it basically every two seconds? I ask because the way HDCP works is that the secure connection to an HDCP compatible device has to be reestablished every 120 frames, which works out to every 2 seconds for 60 Hz video.
The thing is, once VGA is involved, HDCP should not be active at all. Content protection does not have to be applied to analog signals by industry agreement because there is no way to make multiple generation copies of original content from analog signals without suffering degradation. But it sounds like on your particular configuration, HDCP is still active, even though it shouldn't be.
On the other hand, if Apple really did botch that, it seems there would be far more widespread reports of this problem, so it's hard to say what might be unique to your setup. Or maybe I am totally jumping to the wrong conclusion that it has anything to do with HDCP, but it sure sounds like it from your description.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Aaron
Force quit in the middle of an installation spells "trouble". Try starting the computer in Safe Mode. If successful, restart the computer and see if it fully boots. If not, you more than likely have directory damage that needs to be repaired. Disk Utility may be up to the task.

  • IBook G3 external displays

Looking to add on a external large screen display adjacent to my desktop/laptop iBookG3 which has one video out port. What requirements should I consider when purchasing one? Size wise I would consider 17" optimum. Connection requirements? Models to stay away from?
    Thanks, CABJR
    iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

There is a VGA cable coming with the iBook. So - no converter needed. But 17-19-inch displays have a resolution of 1280*1024, 15-inch one of 1024*768. That is, your native resolution is transferred 1:1 only to a 15-inch TFT display which are quite cheap now. If you switch to a 17-19" your desktop rearranges itself to the greater surface and you have to get it in order again when you switch back to your internal display - which I find quite uncomfortable. So - best to set to the "native" 1024*768 resolution if you will work sometimes with an external display and sometimes without.

  • 2005 iBook G4 lcd display has turned streaky fuzzy pink and blue

Boot up laptop screen looks fine. Goes to sleep, wake it up, screen is now weird. Gone fuzzy, no true colors, looks streaky, pink and blue. I rebooted, no change. I'm plugged in, so it is not a power/battery issue. Since I've had this since 2005 I suspect I have to replace the screen, but heck I don't know. Can an expert help me here? I've got a screen shot to share, how do I upload it?

    O&O,
I've got a screen shot to share, how do I upload it?
I think to upload here you have to have a membership. I just upload pics on PhotoBucket:
    http://photobucket.com/
It would help to see a pic.
This is from the service manual for the 14" 1.42 GHz mid '05:
    "xScrambled or distorted video
Check for video on external display.
    • If video is fine on external display, replace LVDS cable.
    • If video is scrambled or distorted on external display, replace LCD panel."
That last line is a bit extreme AFAIC. I suppose a bad display could cause the GPU to put out distorted video. So if it was me I'd unplug the LDVS cable and then if the external display cleared up then I'd replace the LCD panel.
The 1.42 also uses the ATI Mobility Radeon 9550 4x AGP I have one of these in a 1.33 12" and it went bad. My normal repair is to swap in a good chip from a PC laptop graphics card. Unfortunately I can't find a cross reference to that chip being used anywhere else but the iBook 1.33 and 1.42.
after it was sleeping for 3 hours and the screen is bad again
Have you tried resetting PMU? Does any of this involve moving the screen? That's one of my checks for a bad LVDS.

  • Cant get ibook to send display through vga cable

i have a ibook with a broken screen and i have not used it for a year for that reason. i recently boght a vga cable so i could use a external display. but i can not figure out how to get it to work plzzzzzzzzzz help

    Hi shur,
Well like Rhonda says. Sometimes that tiny connector on the iBook can be problematic, check for dirt and such.
    When you say:
i have a ibook with a broken screen
Is the display cracked? no display, black? No backlight w/ a dim image?
If the 2nd what happened when it failed.
It would also help to know your exact model CPU speed and size.

  • IBook G4 - External Display - Sony HS75P

    Hiya,
I am thinking of buying a new external display for my iBook G4 (bought some 2 years ago). The display I have chosen to buy is Sony HS75P which seems to have great reviews.
My question is - will my iBook G4 be good enough to handle the big 17" monitor? HS75P has both Analog and Digital inputs, so I don't have a compatibility problem. But, will the graphics suffer in any way compared to the iBook display itself?
As such I have no plans to upgrade my Mac for atleast a year from now.
    Please help me decide.
    Cheers,
    Shankar.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
when I'm using my external monitor, whether my iBook will go into sleep mode when I close the lid.
No it won't. There's a reed switch by the screen controlled by a magnet on the top case that will cause it to sleep. Yet you can connect your external monitor and wake it with the mouse.

  • My iBooks app now displays all PDF's as "Untitled"

    Good Morning:
My iPhone 3GS is now displaying all new PDF's with the title "Untitled" in my ibooks app. This started after the recent iBooks update. The previous PDF's I have on iBooks from before the update all have the titles of the PDF as it was listed in the Email that the PDF came from. How can I change this so that I will be able to see the PDF titles in iBooks again.
    Thanks Very Much!

    Update:
I went to the Genius Bar at a local Apple Store yesterday and was given the following steps that will remedy the problem with the PDF's
Drag and Drop PDF's directlty from MY Documents (if you are using a PC with Windows XP) and put the PDF's Directly into the Book section in the Library in iTunes.
Then Sync the iPhone in iTunes and the PDF's will display with the names you have chosen.
Do Not Email the PDF's and open them in iBooks or the PDF's will display with the name Untitled.
Note: Be sure to delete the PDF's that are displaying as "Untitled" from the iPhone first as well as the PDF's that are on iTunes as the original cryptic PDF File Name. Then Drag and Drop a fresh Copy of the PDF's and put them into iTunes. After syncing the PDF's will display in iBooks with the name you have chosen.

  • Ibook with external display

recently my backlight on my ibook went out and i don't quite have the money for a new laptop yet so i have decided to use an external monitor for the meantime. i just now need to know which of the adapters do i need for my ibook (G3 500mhz) in order for it to work on the external display? the plug for the display is the type that has three rows with 15 pins (it actually has 14 but there is just an empty place for one) in it. any help?

This is really a totally different question, and should be posted as its own topic to receive the attention it deserves.
In the iBook G4 forum, there is a bit of a discussion on the topic:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=943837
You may have to look for an older monitor in order to get one that supports the maximum resolution of the iBook.
The adapter that came with an iBook is a VGA adapter, so that's what you need to look for in a display.

  • How to get a INTERMITTENT Display failure fixed?

I have a user that has a 15" Mac Book Pro just over 90 days old. I have looked at the system and the display will intermittently come up BLANK when it wakes up. If you open the display it will light up all bright but there will be no image. If you open and close the lid an inch or two back and forth it will INTERMITTENTLY bring up the image on the display. SOMETIMES if you close the display all the way and then re-open it, the display will work. I called the Apple Support line, but of course it is outside of 90 days so they want to CHARGE my credit card to trouble shoot the thing. I booted the device from the original DVD that shipped with the system and it has the same problem. I have even take pictures of it. I had the user of the system take it to the local "genius" bar. They would not help the user because the problem was intermittent. So how do I get an Apple Product fixed when Apple won't even look at it unless I pay them to troubleshoot it over the phone?
This is NUTS! I started supporting Apple products more than 15 years ago. I've never had such a headache trying to get a simple problem fixed. I'm part of a government research agency that does not hand out credit cards for diagnosing silliness. How can I communicate the problem to Apple when they won't the only path is through the "genius" bar that if it can't see the problem it can't exist?
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks.

1.Apple is NOT charging you at this time.
They are merely getting a credit card # in case the problem is caused by something other than a warranteed item.
2.Intermittent symptoms make it difficult to diagnose problems.
Example:Take your car to a mechanic.Tell him "It did something twice, but it's not doing it now.Fix it".
If he can reproduce the problem,he may be able to effect repairs. If he can't,odds are he'll send you down the road.
3.If the "user" is the owner of the MBP,they need to use their own credit card.
If the "Government Agency" is the owner, you need to escalate the repair request up the Chain of Command to someone authorized to pay for needed repairs to equipment.

  • Ibooks 1.5 display bugs

    Hi
I have some issues with iBooks 1.5 (iPad)
in full screen mode, while progressing in the book, pages shift left slowly until i have 2 half pages displayed on my screen !! unreadable ! Only fix i found : go back in normal mode.
in night mode, some margings are displayed as white as the text… ouch ! Only fix : use white or beige theme.
Does someone else have these issues ???

I am having a similar problem, the pdf "book" has one name on itunes on my mac, but on my ipad (IOS 5.0.1 build 9A405) the names are different. Plus pdf "books" keep disappearing. If I go into itunes on the Mac and make any change in the "get info" such as comment etc and resync the pdf shows up again.
Several days later the file again disappears from the ipad (no I am NOT deleting them and I have plenty of free memory on the ipad) and I have make yet another small change.
I did not encounter this behaviour in previous version of ibook.

  • Ibook G4 external display

I was wondering if an Apple 17" studio display model M7649 will hook up and work on my G4 Ibook?

It has to be a VGA display, therefore, it won't work with the Apple 17 Inch Studio Display. Your iBook G4 should have come with the Apple VGA Display Adapter. If not, you'll need to get one. A second display will support a resolution of up to 1024 X 768, mirroring only. You can also use a projector, 24-bit color.
Now I'm trying to determine which VGA LCD display will work with my PowerPC 7447a G4. 1.0GHz iBook.
