IBook G4 Keyboard is dead.

Totally dead. No caps light; no numeric keypad light; nothing.
A USB keyboard works. A replacement keyboard does NOT work.
iBook G4 1.2 GHz 12-inch 768 MB of RAM running Mac OS X 10.4.11.
Will the USB keyboard reset the PMU, or am I out of luck on that?

The external Apple USB keyboard should work to reset the PMU
and other standard keyboard shortcuts or commands on an iBook.
Been about a year since I did that, and my iBook 12" 1.33GHz
mid-2005 computer had been used predominantly as a desktop
computer with Apple keyboard, Apple pro mouse, powered USB
hub, UPS, and other items; and a keyboard tray/monitor stand to
keep the iBook on top. (Did not have to move display lid, either.)
The USB keyboard did everything expected of the internal, in the
case of my set up; and I preferred the desktop layout over internal.
Hopefully you can isolate the cause of the problem.
Good luck & happy computing!

Also, I am trying to connect my Mini from the mini-Displayport to the Displayport of my Dell U2410 monitor.  The image is very grainy, even though it is set to the correct resolution: 1920 X 1200 at 60Hz.  If I use HDMI to VGA input, the image is much clearer.  Is there a way to get the Displayport to work?

I'm having exactly the same keyboard issue.  Certainly nothing has ever enhanced my concentration while coding like suddenly becoming unable to type.
I'm seeing a great many devicemgr and rake errors in my system log.  I don't know if they're related.  How 'bout you?
If you're unfamiliar with the system log…
    Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
If necessary, choose View > Show Log List.
system.log is at the top of the FILES section.
Try searching it for hot words like DEBUG, FATAL, and aborted.
I've found some discussions that would tend to indicate my errors are postGres related – I'm running OS X server.

If your batteries leaked and possibly eroded teh contacts the best you can do it to attempt to remove all the fluid and clean the contacts. If the keyboard still does not work after a thorough cleaning yes it will need to be replaced. A new wireless keyboard is about $59 from OWC or you may want to look online for a used one, sometimes OWC (www.macsales.com) has them used. Other sources are Apple of course, Amazon, and any Apple reseller.

    Hi CyHunter-X,
    welcome to Discussions!
Since some water was spilled, we don't know exactly if the problem is only a keyboard problem, or if it is something more serious, in case water did shortcut some other components in your iBook.
The first thing to do always, is to first unplug-shutdown the Mac, then dry everything inside as carefully and completely as possible.
--> Now try an external USB keyboard, see if your iBook works normally.
    If it works,
yes, you'll have to take the keyboard apart for repairs or replacement.
If it doesn't work with the external USB keyboard,
then the problem is also inside the iBook, with some other(s) component(s).
You can use a hair dryer. Not too close! And be patient: some places take DAYS before they completely dry up.

  • My iBook's Keyboard Space Bar, right and F5 buttons not working...

Yesterday I cleaned up my iBook's keyboard. Everything was working fine until I left my computer idle, even backlight of the display was dimmed. Then I noticed that my display was lit again, like if I had pressed a button on the keyboard, but I was away of my computer, I was on bed. Suddenly the keyboard started acting weird like if it had the command key pressed, so i disconected all power supplies and let the computer opened on my desk. I suspected that the keyboard somehow got wet, but I doubt it.
Today everything seem to be working fine, until I tried to type something and noticed that the space bar, F5 and the right arrow (also end) don´t work :S
I need help of what can be causing this, i already tried reseting the PMU, removing all power sources, checking preferences and even repaired permisions and noting seems to work. I just hope that my keyboard is not defective since my iBook just lost warranty past august :S

I cleaned it with a mild soap and a clean cloth. Both were damp. I have cleaned it like this before and had no problems.

  • Keyboard & trackpad dead on my unibody MBP

    Hiya.
I've got a late 2008 15" MBP that I haven't used for about 2 months, after using it extensively since 2009. I've had very little problems with it, but now that I've booted it up after the 2 month period, the integrated keyboard and trackpad are dead. No response whatsoever. I've got a USB keyboard and mouse, so I can get it to work. But not reset PRAM, as the USB keyboard doesn't work when booting (I tried).
I've seacrhed the intarwebz and found references to this exact problem leading to removing the battery and making sure a copper colored strip was pressed down properly. But, this model doesn't have that copper strip. So that solution doesn't work for me.
I've rebooted several times, tried to boot into safe mode (again, no keyboard means no other booting options). Since it's 4 years old, there's no more warranty. There's only one genius bar in my country (NL), and it's not near where I live.
I'm running the leatest OS and updates. There's a 2010 patch for internal keyboard problems for 10.5.x, but that doen't install on my machine.
Anyone go any tips? I checked for deformations, the battery is ok, there's no bulges or anything. And prior to the 2 month rest it was working fine.
I've searched my console logs for IO device entries but only found that it was looking for bluetooth devices on startup (as it couldn't find an keyboard or mouse). No errors that it can't find my internal keyboard.
I'm stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

the problem is that us unibody mbp need the update because my machine runs at 200 degrees while doing basic work. i've installed smc fan controller and still have issues. so where's the solution for all the unibody mbps with overheating issues

  • Miix 2 10 keyboard dock dead

    Hi
miix keyboard is not recognised as connected and appears tobe dead
the keyboard that it came with had the wrong keys for uk so it was swapted out
the new one arrived after I dropped my corp 8.1 image on it
i have reinstalled all the drivers from the support site
there are no ? in devise manager
any ideas what i missed could it be the bios
how do i get to the bios from the rablet without the dock keyboard..
    thank you

I had a very similar prolem, after a couple of weeks my keyboard and touchpad suddenly stopped working.
Lucky I had a BT mouse connected so the following steps were a bit easier to accomplish.
Having a look at the device manager I saw that there was a device called "IC2 HID Device" with a yellow exclamation mark in the "Human Interface Devices" section.
I took the tablet out of the dock first, then removed this device by right-clicking on it and then chose "Uninstall".
On top of that I also removed ALL of the "HID Keyboard Device" entries in the "Keyboards" section of device manager (also by right-clicking and "Uninstall").
After that I immediately shut down WIndows (not just restart), waited until it was totally switched off and then switched it on again. After that I logged on to windows and then put the tablet back into the dock.
After the restart my dock keyboard and touchpad worked again.
One more strange thing that I've noticed: Before the operation I had two "HID Keyborad Device" entries in device manager and after that there were four of them. Anyway this worked for me, you might want to try it (at your own risk).

  • Ibook g4 keyboard issue

I have an Ibook G4 that was purchased in Jan 2005. My 90 day phone support has dissolved however the laptop is still under hardware warrenty for 180+ days.
The right side of the spacebar sticks and is really annoying. How do I go about getting a replacement part from apple? I can't seem to find any other method to contact them other then phone and then it costs $49 for them to talk to me.
    Thanks.

Amy welcome to apple discussions board.
I believe that within one year from the day of purchase you can still add apple care. that extends the technical telephone support from 90 days to 3 years and warranty from one year to three years.
I believe if an apple tech agent identifies your keyboard issue they can set it up for service. that means that you have to pay for any hardware replacement plus labor and shipping cost (both ways).
an alternative would be to contact an apple authorized service center, like CompUSA. hope that was useful. good luck and feel free to post back if have more questions.

  • IBook G4 Keyboard Replacement Question

I need to replace the keyboard on my iBook G4 14" 1.42GHz which I bought in Sep 2005.
However, I can't figure out which replacement keyboards online are compatible.
The bar code number on the keyboard is KY5322DDTGKA.
I see sellers saying that their replacement keyboards are compatible with p/n 922-6637, 922-6189, 922-6913, PBF8415 for instance. I can't figure out though if my iBook is compatible with this.
Can someone give me the correct Apple part number for a replacement keyboard that is compatible with my iBook?
    Thanks

    mac-question:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
iFixit lists Apple part numbers, then says, this keyboard works in all G4 14" iBooks.
PowerBook Medic also suggests the part is interchangeable.
PowerBookTech offers these links which you can check out.
Be sure you call or email and ask questions before you buy, to be sure you are getting the right part.

  • IBook G4 keyboard not responding

My wife recently spilled some water on the side of her iBook and now when she hits the keyboard it is not responding anymore. Is the keyboard that sensitive to water? Is there a way to test whether it's the keyboard or the connection? If it's the keyboard any recommendation on where to buy one?

The chances are, the water has damaged something in the keyboard.
It would take a vast amount of water to run down into the logic board. By the suggestion in your question, it's only a small amount. Keyboard are very easily replaced and could be brought secondhand working on eBay very cheaply. Make sure you buy the right keyboard for your model and screen size. A 14" iBook keyboard wont fit a 12"  iBook keyboard.
    Best of luck

  • Ibook G4 Keyboard Arrow Key

hi, maybe sombody has a helpful hint here?
I have an iBook G4, I've only had it since May. maybe April of 2005.
just one day ago, the left arrow key (also marked "home") stopped responding.
I can physically press the key just as always. Feels normal.
but it doesn't do anything. the cursor doesn't move left when it is pressed.
the other arrow keys work fine.
command+left arrow doesn't do anything either.
I'm not terribly abusive to the keyboard.
I use the up and down arrow keys more than the other arrow keys.
all the other keys on the keyboard respond fine.
    is something broken?
I lifted out the keyboard and there did not appear to be and dirt or debris of any kind. What do I do?
(I am in Tokyo, and there are 2 apple stores here, but I have never had good response from apple japan on the pone, quite cold actually.)

    Hi John,
    (that's hilarious)
ironically, I ended up doing exactly as you suggested just a day befor you posted! Actually, two days before because I'm in Tokyo, but I'm from the Austin area. The Tokyo Shibuya ward Apple Store is no exception to the world class service. I was concerened I would end up paying for a new keyboard, and fully expected that. Boy, was I surprised when they made my day....
not only was it free (they said still under warranty) but also they replaced it while I waited!
One tip for anyone in Tokyo who needs to get help from the Apple stores here, go early to make an appointment, because they get booked up fast!
This is a very densely populated city, and you can bet they have a 3rd store on the way, if not a fourth...
    Thanks John!
P.S. I had a Yikes G4 400 back in college, great machine, but did have bus errors a lot. Is yours upgraded (i presume) ? Do you or did you ever get those bus errors? (particularly in the old OS)

  • How can I turn pages on iPad (iBooks) from keyboard?

I'm a band leader and want to be able to wirelessly turn the pages of my band's iPads using my wifi apple keyboard (or better yet from my iPad itself!)
    So there are 2 questions:
1: Can I use the Apple keyboard to turn pages in ANY software - preferably iBooks?
2: Can I use my wireless keyboard to type on multiple iPads at once?

I really wonder, why apple does not do this? I mean it is already implemented for the portrait mode, so it shouldn't be that hard!
Also I want to see some wireless keyboard shortcuts that are especially created for pages (for examples making text bold, italic, aligning in the center, justifying, etc.) and other apple applications. Come on apple, do you really think that people are using pages, numbers, etc. on their iPad without using the wireless keyboard?! It would be just a nightmare. And since we are using the keyboard, we don't want to touch every time we need to make a text bold, etc. At least not for some easy operations. So please add some keyboard shortcuts for this in the next pages update. It shouldn't be that hard!

  • Ibook replacement Keyboard

    Hi,
I have lost the apple key and most of the keypads are all worn, would i be able to replace the keyboard with a US ibook keypad version for a UK mac?
    hope you can help !

There may be a part number for whichever keyboard your iBook needs, and through that,
more information on what would be compatible with your computer should be known.
In some markets, there were different part numbers for the 12" and 14" iBooks; in only
some models. (Given same language localization in both.)
The US keyboard should just work, and if the language is not correct, the Keyboard Viewer
and input source settings, (or International? maybe) may have to be checked to see what
they are on. Other than specific country/language keyfaces, the rest is inside the computer.
If you can find the part number(s) of the keyboards in question, then compatibility should be
a known factor between the UK and US English versions. There should be a number on the
bottom of your iBook's board. Parts resellers should have them listed on web sites, too.
Not sure when the keyboards changed, so you have to watch for that; since a last model
iBook may have a different build than the earlier G4 you have.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Ibook G3 keyboard problem: one keypress causes many characters to appear...

I have seen a iBook G3 (dual USB) for sale that I might purchase, the only problem is that the seller says that when he presses any of the F2, 2, w, s and x keys, it displays the results as if all the keys were pressed simultaneously. All these keys are aligned diagonally if you look at the keyboard. My question really is is this possibly a software issue or is it hardware?
    Thanks in advance!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
This is most likely a hardware issue which will require replacing the keyboard.
If the iBook still has its OS 9 installation, you can check to be sure by restarting into OS 9. (System Preferences > Startup Disk)
If it happens in OS 9, too, you can be certain that the keyboard needs to be replaced.

  • Ibook weird keyboard issue

I was cleaning a spot off of my delete key on my iBook. Since then, the computer does not recognize my delete key. It does not show up in keyboard viewer when I hit the key but if I click the keyboard viewer, the delete key in viewer with the mouse, it works.
Ctrl-h works in some apps. Please help!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
How long ago was it that you cleaned it? What did you clean it with?
It could be that time will take care of the problem. If not, it may require a new keyboard to get the function back.
You also may want to try posting in the iBook G4 Forum.
(You have posted in the iBook G3 (Dual USB) Forum.)
