IBook g4 (late 2004) Appleworks??

I recently had to do an erase/install on my iBook G4. I had Appleworks 6 on it I swear and after the erase/install it isn't there! I have both original install disks. Does anyone know if Appleworks was on those disks? Where else could it have come from? Please help!

AppleWorks is included in the bundled software that came with the iBook (all versions), but is not installed by default.
Startup from the first install disk, but instead of clicking Install, look at the menus and choose Install Bundled Software.
That should give you a list of the included software. Go through the list, unchecking all the checkboxes. When you come to "AppleWorks Languages", click the disclosure triangle to show the list. Check the version(s) you want to install, then continue down the main list, unchecking everything else (you've already installed all of them). When you get to the end of the list, click Install to install only AppleWorks.

I purchased my iBook in 2005. It was the late 2004 model (I think this was the last iBook G4). Can anyone remember what size the HD was that came standard with the cheapest model?

The iBook G4 (Late 2004) had two main variants,
+Machine ID called PowerBook6,5+
the 1.2 Ghz (12.1") and the 1.33 Ghz (14")
with hard drives being 30, 60 or 80 GB.
There was a later model, the last iBook G4 being the (Mid 2005) one.
+Machine ID called PowerBook6,7+
again two variants,
1.33 Ghz (12.1") and the 1.42 Ghz (14.1")
with hard drives being 40, 60 80 or 100 GB.
I guess this doesn't really answer your question, with so many variations but I hope it gives you something to go on.

Ibook G4 late 2004 model charging intermittently-flashes amber then green

Hi there, i have an ibook G4 14 inch late 2004 with mac os x 10.4.11. my previous 45w power cord needed to be jiggled in order to power the laptop (it was pretty damaged). yesterday, it stopped working completely, so i went to the apple store and bought a new 65w power cord. of course, it worked perfectly in the store. when i went home, it seemed to work perfectly until the battery reached about 37%, then it started doing this weird thing. while plugged in, the light on the power cord started flashing, changing from green to amber. it will be green for about 8 seconds, then amber for about 6 seconds.
it does this whether the computer is being used or shut down. while i was using the computer, the battery drained pretty quickly, so i shut it down and left it plugged in overnight. overnight, it seemed to have charged a little bit. the battery says it is 55% charged and, when i open my energy saver on system preferences, it will appear as if it is charging while the power cord light flashes amber, then stops charging when the power cord light flashes green. as i said, it will be amber for about 6 seconds, then green for about 8 seconds.
i tried resetting the PMU, but it did not work (perhaps i did it incorrectly?). i then tried to reset the pmu and the pram via these instructions:
turned computer off.
Make sure the Caps Lock key is not down.
Restart the computer. Immediately after hearing the startup sound, simultaneously press and hold Command-Option-P-R. (If you do not hold down the key combination within 5 to 10 seconds after the computer restarts, you must repeat steps 1-3.)
Hold down the keys until you hear the startup sound again. Then release the keys.
If the computer shuts itself off, press the reset button on the back of the computer to turn it back on.
that didn't work. then i tried to just reset the PMU again (via the support instructions) by turning the computer off, then simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Did not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
Waited 5 seconds, then pressed the power button.
that didn't help either.
i have been trying to figure this out but have not been able to thus far. of course, aside from being able to read, i have no computer savvy whatsoever. ANY help would be so appreciated. sorry i typed so much, but since i do not know much about computers, i was unsure what information was most pertinent.

There may be other issues in the computer's hardware, such as the
battery; as it should have about 4,000 (mAh) in full capacity when it
is charged and the one you have appears to be at best, 50% of that.
Also, there is a chance the DC-in Board may be defective or have a
poor internal connection where the AC Adapter plugs into the iBook.
There are some pages at iFixit.com about how to remedy this defect;
and parts are available to repair this, still. (But suspect the battery, 1st.)
I'm looking at the charging information on your log report and wonder if
the battery is the reason why there is a Zero, in that section; or if there
is some DC-in Board reason. Without a known-good battery, it's hard to
tell what else may be going on. Unless you take it to a Genius bar...(?)

Troubleshooting power related issues in a portable computer can be a
bit tedious as the computers age, and potential sources of the problem
may be at play in there, at the same time.
There also is a matter of calibrating a battery on a routine basis, to be sure
it works correctly and the microchip controller for charging it is working OK.

The battery is the most likely culprit in the matter of the charge light indicator
changing color from Amber to Green and back again, like that. This is a matter
of troubleshooting, so if you know someone with a healthy iBook G4 battery
(as noted in Profiler's battery or energy information, hi-power/low-use cycles)
you may be able to check the activity without additional purchases.
Be sure to get a replacement battery from a reputable company, as some of
the third-party cheap imports have less battery capacity when new than an
old partially used Apple battery would have. (And flaky warranty, too.)
The battery is the most likely item, at this point. A replacement is suggested.

Errors installing Leopard on iBook G4 (Late 2004)

I apologize for the long post but it seems like a good idea to provided some good background:
My friends iBook started freaking out a couple of months ago (e.g. kernel errors and all the fonts on the desktop icons/menu were "AAAAAAAA"). I helped him run Disk Utilities. I installed and ran Applejack and this "seemed" to help, but the drive still had errors that neither could repair. Last week, it started to persistently crashing and producing kernel errors. I took his iBook home to see if I could help. It stopped booting and Disk Utility could not repair the errors, so I wiped the drive and repartitioned and the drive still had several errors. I assumed that the drive was bad.
I replace the HD and installed a 250 GB, WD Scorpio Blue PATA, Model WD2500BEVERTL. Oh, the iBook is a G4, 1.33GHZ and 256 MB Main Ram plus 512 MB of RAM added. I followed the instructions from iFixIt <http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/iBook-G4-14-Inch-933-MHz-1-33-GHz-Hard-Driv e-Replacement/189/1> and faqintosh <http://www.faqintosh.com/risorse/en/guides/hw/ibook/g4hd/>. Both sites were almost correct. After I removed and replaced the HD, put everything together I had to remove the firmware password, which required a couple of RAM removals and Command-Option-P-R resets. I performed a few commands from terminal to verify that the firmware password was gone. See <http://www.fif3.com/howto/archives/001983.html>.
I installed the Leopard disk, setup the new disk using the Disk Utilities on the Leopard disk and proceeded with this installation. It failed to install. I played around with this and that and made several attempt to perform the installation via the optical drive in the iBook. It did not work. I started to read the installation log and tried to figure out what the problem was and found a few errors and tried to find a solution online. I was suspicious that the optical drive was acting up <http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10470660&#10470660> , <http://www.hackint0sh.org/f147/68876.htm> so I investigated how to install Leopard using Target mode. Simple, right, connect the iMac to the iBook, restart the iMac in Target mode so the iBook can share the opticle drive in the iMac, unless.... Leopard cannot see a drive via Target mode if the "Target" is running Snow Leopard. grrrrr!
Well, I found lots of talk about imaging the Leopard installation disk to an external firewire HD, and performing the Leopard installing using the "option" start and select the external firewire drive. I found some great instruction <http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10329117-263.html> that walk me through the steps required to make an image of the Leopard disk and then restore the file to an external drive. An hour and a half later, I had the image restored to a 500 GB USB/Firewire external HD with one partition Apple Partition Map and connected it via the firewire to the ibook... Ran the installation again and the same errors occurred. I tried again, freeze. Tried again same errors.
Well, I had a crazy idea, install Leopard on the External Drive. This time the errors occurred at the same points; however, it was verbose and if I am reading it correctly the information that the installer is looking for on the Leopard disk that is missing or corrupt. The interesting thing with this is "Bad" Leopard disk came up several times during my searches. I have use my Leopard disk once on the iMac (now running Snow Leopard), why would I suspect the installation disk? Right? Well, the error that displayed on the last attempt pointed to the installation disk missing information and to contact the vendor.
Yesterday, I obtained another retail copy of Leopard from a coworker and the same errors occurred. I tried again, it froze. I tried a disk image to the external drive using the new disk which resulting in the same errors.
I don't really think there is a hardware issue (e.g. RAM) but who knows at this point. All I can really say is that my friends iBook is still dead. Actually, worse that when I got it. At least before it would boot Tiger... sometimes. Does anyone have any recommendations? Or a source for a retail copy of Tiger?

It is obvious the this is the wrong forum OR no one is interested in installing Leopard on an iBook G4. Regardless, I continued to investigate and found many posts related to bad or suspect RAM. So, I purchased a 512MB stick of Crucial RAM PC 2700 from a local PC and Apple repair shop. I would have purchased a 1GB stick, but this was not available.
I reset the RAM via Command-Option-P-R upon restart, ran the Leopard installation. This time it was successful. Everything was working great and then I had to install the updates... Note: I Should have made an image of the installation on the HD and Time Machine back up... but I didn't. This was a bad call because the 10.5.8 combo update didn't finish and crashed during install... then it provided an error message that it could not be installed, restart.
Subsequent attempts to reinstall Leopard via the DVD/CD drive have failed. I ran Disk Utility and the HD volume now had errors. I tried to repair these with Applejack & TechTool Deluxe. It could not repair... so I gave up.
Upon my returning to a challenge, I used Disk Utility to erase and setup one partition on the HD. I ran Leopard install. It failed. Ran Disk Utility again, erased the HD this time with zeros (just for fun) and the installation is hanging. I am going to let it sit over night. Any ideas out there?

IBook G4 Late 2004 Keeps Freezing!

I have a iBook G4 and its just started to freeze all the time. I can use it and everything, its just whenever i move it. The only thing i can do is move the mouse?!?! Help?!?!

Hi Wolfder and welcome to Apple Discussions, Your computer is fine until you move it, right? When it freezes, does it ever come back or do you have to turn it off?
No offense, are you new to Mac's? Have you repaired permissions and how much disk space is available?
From your short description, my first guess would be that the Hard Drive acuator is moving when the computer is disturbed which abruptly changes the location of the heads that read the data..for example, your working in a word.doc then all of a sudden your head is reading a video file. The computer doesn't know what to do so it starts thinking....freezes...Your drive would have to be replaced.
But before you go there, let's make darn sure thats what it is.
IN THE MEAN TIME: If you have a backup external FW drive, clone your system.
or just backup everything that you want in case the drive goes bye-bye.

IBook (Late 2004)- Thought it was a disk problem but now out of my depth?

This a really strange one.
I'll give you as much to go on as poss... Long post alert!!
(I'm wondering if I perhaps have more than one problem..?)
I have an iBook G4 (Late 2004) here, 1.2 Ghz, with an 80GB factory installed HD. RAM maxed out, but unaltered for 4 years. No new software or other recent changes.
It started acting wonky, freezing, crashing etc, so ran Disk Utility to repair permissions. Closed itself down halfway through, then wouldn't boot at all, just showed flashing question mark.
In Target Disk Mode, Disk Utility showed "*Underlying task reported failure*" and Disk Warrior couldn't replace directory "*due to Mac OS X services failure*".
(Did show me red than I've ever seen on using DW before though!)
Tried to boot from install CD but wouldn't start up. The only CD it will boot from is Apple Hardware Test, which showed "*Error Detected*" for Mass Storage.
OK, I thought, the disk is 4 years old, time to get the screwdrivers out.
Using the ifixit instructions and Spudnuty's helpful suggestions (+BTW, thanks!+), successfully changed it for a WD 250GB Scorpio disk (£90, MicroAnvika), and then using Target Disk mode again, initialized it and used Carbon Copy Cloner to restore my last full clone (6 months old though... I know, I know!).
Restarted in 'standalone mode', repaired disk permissions (SMART showing Verified), all seemed to be functioning OK, then tried to start up from Disk Warrior to double check.
Now all attempts to start up from DW or Install CDs result in Kernel Panics or blank grey screens, although Apple Hardware Test still runs and shows
*ERROR CODE: 2STF/8/3: ATA-100 ata-6-Master ERROR CODE*
In Target Disk Mode, both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior are making the same reports as before the Hard Disk exchange.
So I pulled the 1GB of RAM (Crucial) which has been in there for 4 years, and also took off the battery, and hey it started up ok!!
Ran Disk utility- SMART status Verified, but repair permission "*lost its connection with Macintosh HD*" halfway through. At second attempt, it repaired ok.
Tried to start from CD again, several attempts result only in booting to-
" *Invalid Memory Access at %SRR0: 72b82dc0 %SRR1:40003030*
*Apple PowerBook 6,5 4.8.7f1 Boot ROM Built on 09/23/04* " etc etc
*Welcome to Open Firmware*" etc etc, where entering "shut-down" hangs and "mac-boot" flips me the Flashing Question Mark again.
I've tried resetting PRAM (several tries no changes), tried starting up in Single User mode, Safe Mode etc etc... makes no difference.
So here's the question-
Is it possible that the ATA bus is to blame? (What's the fix?) Or suddenly bad RAM?
What else can I do before I concur with the service manual that the logic board needs replacing?
I'm loath to give up on it, it's been a good friend for years! (On the other hand, I can't justify spending too much on it either...)
Any ideas? (and sorry, brevity apparently not my forte!)

The point is up to your needs. They are nice machines, and if you can have it repaired, there is no harm in trying to be environmentally friendly by making it useful again. Updating to new software may be more trouble than it is worth depending on how old the software you currently have installed, and your finances for new software. Or getting a working used or refurbished Mac might be another option. See my FAQ*:

What discs were included with my iBook G4 (Nov 2004, 1.2GHz)

Does anybody have a list of which discs were included with the iBook G4 (1.2Ghz) that I bought in approx November 2004?
I know there are two 10.3 System Discs, but I don't know if a separate iLife disc was included (rather than just the apps being installed with the system) or if a OS 9.2 disc was included (doubtful on the latter).
The reason is that I recently sold the unit and the buyer claims that the iLife and OS 9 discs are missing. I'm reasonably certain that Apple doesn't include OS 9 in anything recent but can't quite remember on the iLife. I have many Apple discs from my various Macs around here that I can't correlate what goes with what. I was pretty confident that the disc pack for that iBook was complete since I never even opened it...just upgrade to tiger soon after I got it.

Your iLife Restore is on thee System Discs I believe. I don't believe your computer came with the OS 9 CD. They stopped shipping OS 9 with the late 2004 iBooks. You should show the buyer this link.

Dual G5 late 2004. Some problems with fan and freeze and now can't start

I just purchased a late 2004 Dual 2.5 Gig, with PCI-x and 1 gig ethernet. 1 Gig of what I presume to be factory ram and blue toothe. Connected to a new 23" Apple display.
The problems I have been having pale to where I stand now. I am stuck and can't move forward. At this point, the computer is off. When I try to turn it on, it does little to nothing and gradually the fan speed increases until the computer sounds like it wants to take off. The screen either stays dark, or sometimes I see the ? briefly, and then the grey screen with logo and that is where it stops. Currently I can't get past a lot of fan noise??
Can I get this thing started?? I have tried both starting from CD and hard drive. No luck.
This whole mess started yesterday and has continually gotten worse. Those details I can get into if needed, but for now, what can I do to see the screen and start over.
I just bought the machine, and I was doing a clean install that was acting funny. Hard drive sleep mode would cause the machine to not wake up. Specifically it was the monitor that would not wake up. The keyboard and the computer would still respond when I adjusted the volume. The screen was black.
I narrowed the problem to drive sleep, or monitor sleep by using the energy saver preferences. Just the monitor sleeping wasn't the probem. The computer would wake up. But if the hard drive went to sleep, then I could never get the screen back and the computer acted dormant. The only thing I could get was the volume sound from the computer and lights on the keyboard.
I ran Techtool Pro 4.1.2 ( i think ) and it reported possibe problems on the hard drive with the volume. I made the changes hoping that would fix the problem? No.
I decided to flush it all and start over with the install cd, make sure firmware was good, reformat the drive, and then install the System. But instead, I got caught is this loop of death that I can't get out of.
It had a kernal panic the first day I turned it on, but that was the last one. (dark screen with white message) The computer ran rather sluggish at times. I was shocked at times. Very slow finder response.
So? Suggestions? I have searched Apple support and tried anything I can think of. This is my first G5, but I have had some exposure to OSX beginning around 10.2. I am at my wits end and would greatly appreciate some input. For now I have to get some sleep.
Is my battery bad? It just won't start?

You could try a PMU/SMU reset

Use the second procedure if you have a button as shown in the photo - use the first method if you don't. You may not have to remove the intake fan assembly to get at the button. Observe static precautions and make sure to press the button once only.
Then try to start up on the CD/DVD.
If it fires up ok you could then proceed with the 10.4 install as before, and then combo update to 10.4.8

I would connect only a display, wired keyboard and mouse to start with - and disable any of the sleep, etc. Options in Energy Saver.
You may wish to use the Disk Utility on the 10.4 retail disc(under Utilities in the menu) to Erase and zero(select Security Options) the drive before the install.
The kernel panic and other problems could have been caused by a corrupted system on the boot drive, or by hardware problems, such as RAM, video card, battery, etc. Some of the hardware stuff is linked-to further down the post here

Not used my G5 Powermac (late 2004) for ages. Only boots in with Installation disk, but colour dots on white screen and message comes up to reboot machine. Nothing happens.

Can you please provide details on the exact model?
For a start, the PRAM battery is likely dead. PRAM tells the computer which drive to start with, other basic information. Still, you can usually get the computer to start, though bad PRAM is unpredictable and could be stopping that.
Some computer models use software to control cooling fans. If there's no software commands they automatically go into high speed to prevent overheating. Your software obviously isn't loading, so runaway fans.

Ibook G4 (Early 2004) wireless

Does anybody knows if my Ibook G4 (early 2004) 12.1 inch serial number UV4232SKQJP is airport extreme ready? I want to go wireless but I don't know if I shoud buy the aiport card or the airport extreme card. How could i know which one? Thanks.

The 12" iBook G4/1 GHz introduced 2004.04.19 had wireless networking: 54 Mbps AirPort Extreme optional.
So you would just need an Airport Extreme card (mounts under the keyboard on the left). Take a peek to make sure one's not already there.

The Nividia 6600 is for pci express slots, as is the Radeon X1900. (2650 x 1600)
If you have the ATI Radeon 9600 XT card, that is agp. You should also have pci slots. I talked to Apple, the pci express slots were put on the 2005 G5s, not the late 2004 models. Also, made the mistake of ordering it already....doesn't fit.
So far can only find ATI Radeon 9600 Mac edition (2560 x 1600 & agp), 9800 Mac edition or ATI X800 Mac Edition (2560 x 1600 & agp). Don't know what the difference is really except that ATI's site says that the x800 replaces the 9800???

Is external antenna required for Late 2004 Bluetooth to function?

I have a G5 Late 2004 with the blue module installed, but i don't have the external antenna. Is this required for operation, or is my module bad? It shows up in profiler,but won't connect to anything. Also, if it is required, does anyone know a good place to purchase one.

Bluetooth is a short-range wireless technology, and you're going to shorten that extensively if you don't have an antenna. As you're seeing, it probably won't even work without the antenna.
The external antenna is about $30 from Mac-pro.com.
Are you missing the Airport antenna as well? Both antennas were in the same bag, as I recall.

Maximum internal HDD space on Dual G5 (late 2004)?

I currently have a stock 80 GB and a user-installed 300 GB. I do a lot of video. So I plan to move the 80's contents to the 300, and the 300's contents to a new 750 (Fry's has them on sale this weekend). But I got spooked when I googled for PowerMac G5 tech specs and found one page stating that the maximum internal HDD space was 500 GB between devices. However, no size limit is listed on the Late 2004 PowerMac's tech specs page at http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G5_Late2004.html .
So, can I go ahead and get the 750, for a total drive space of 1050 GB?

Hello! OWC lists drives up to 1 T for your machine. There have been some problems with some G5's so if you want to look at an individual drive check the XLR8 drive compatibility database. Tom

Late 2004 G5 w/ PCI Express x16?

The Mac Support page with the Late 2004 Powermac G5 user manual link is not working properly. So, I'm asking here.
Does the early model of Powermac G5 (Late 2004) have PCI Express x16 architecture on the motherboard? I have the Dual 2.0Ghz version. The reason I'm asking is that I'd like to upgrade the video card on it to a new Nvidia GeForce 7900 GT but that requires a PCI Express x16 slot.
Please let me know. If not, do you know what architecture it has? Thank you in advance.

After communicating with the Strangedogs people, I went ahead and purchased an Nvidia GeForce 7800GS (256MB RAM) to be 'flashed' to work in a Mac system (read about 'flashing' BEFORE using it as an option). This is the BEST AGP card on the market today and with AGP dying out to PCI Express, you'll probably see fewer and fewer AGP cards in the future. My other AGP option was the ATI Radeon X800 XT 256MB RAM (Mac Version) but the GeForce uses the newer architecture and is suppposedly about 16% better in terms of high end performance (see http://www.barefeats.com/mutant3a.html). Obviously the PREFERRED option was to upgrade my entire system to PCI Express architecture, but as with many others, too much money for too little improvement at the moment.
Pros:
Performance boost (+16%)
Newer architecture
Cost about $100 less than ATI X800 XT Mac Version (cost is about the same with $100 cost of 'flashing' unless you can do it yourself)
Cons:
No dual-DVI for 30" Apple Cinema display
Modification to a PC designed card (not standard practice)
I currently have the ATI Radeon 9600 XT card, so I expect a big performance boost. I'll report with the results from Strangedogs and the 'flashing' of the 7800 GS...

ESATA for "late 2004" G5?

Has anyone had success adding eSATA to a "late 2004" G5? This computer has PCI slots, but no PCIe.

eSATA can be added to your G5 with an eSATA controller card like those from FirmTek and Sonnet.
I use Firmtek's SeriTek 2SE2-E controller card and their 2EN2 drive enclosure on my G5 (although my G5 uses PCIe).
