re: Migrating my IPhoto from Time Machine Backup to my just-installed Snow Leopard OSX... the program is there, all my photos are there..... but my photos had all been neatly arranged in folders, and there is absolutely no sign of my folders. What a mess, 20,000 photos. How can I restore my folders?
(iphoto 08)Restore the library from Time Machine as shown in this screenshot:
Then open the library with iPhoto. No importing necessary.

Instal lion on Leopard OSX?
hI. I've replaced my hard drive, and installed leopard OSX, so later I could instal my version of lion, that I privously bough on app Store. To do that, I need the snow leopard, which came with my laptop when I bought it, but my snow leopard disk is scratched, and gives me an error everytime I try to install it. What can I do to update My laptop to Lions OSX?
I don't have any of those. And the orginal hard drive is completly non operational.
The scratch on snow leopard disk is a perfect round circle, created by the disk reader on the mac. Obviously was not my fault. Shouldn't be a way to install the snow leopard online or something, for free, with my user details, since when I bought it, the snow leopard came with the laptop?
Or any way of access the app store, or my purchases on app store, without snow leopard?
Thank you. -
Clean Install Leopard OSX / Optical Drive Not Working
I have a 4 year old 15" MBP and I want to perform a clean install. The problem is that I my optical drive is not working. It reads in any disc for a few seconds and then spits it out. Is there a way to get around this because I need to use my Leopard OSX disc in order to perform a clean install. Thank you.

I recently bought an ibook g4 with osx 10.5.8 I would like to downgrade to 10.3.9. I spoke to 2 people at the genious bar. One said to buy osx 10.3 9 on amazon. another said that might not work as the upgrade to 10.5 could have made internal changes.
I have another ibook g4 with 10.3.9 on it. Is there any way to utilie this?
Thanks
Jim CThanks Niel.
Bear with me, as I'm not particularly computer literate.
I found the computer listed (Powerbook 6,7, 12 inch screen) and the following note:
"Details: *This model is capable of using Mac OS 9 applications within the Mac OS X "Classic" environment provided with Mac OS X 10.4.11 "Tiger" and lower ("Classic" is not supported starting with Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard"). It cannot boot into Mac OS 9."
Does this mean if I purchase OSX 10.4.11, I can install it and then use software that works in the "Classic" environment?
Again thanks for your help. -
Network issues with Leopard fresh install
I have an iBook that I was running Leopard on with no issues yesterday. It is no longer my main computer, so I wanted to wipe everything and start from scratch with a fresh install of Leopard. The install went smoothly. I did an Erase & Install setup from a Leopard Upgrade disc (but already had Leopard on my system so upgrade verified OK). When I booted up for the first time, it appeared everything was working normally.
I went online, downloaded a couple pieces of software I frequently use, and then started to set things up. This is when I ran into issues. I could browse the web without a problem. I could set up email with POP access, but not IMAP. AIM with Adium connects just fine. Tweetie won't connect. Dropbox won't connect. It's like some ports are being blocked, but others aren't, and I can't figure out why.
I have tried/verified:
OSX firewall is off
Restarted router/cable several times
iBook is in router's DMZ- outside of router firewall
Repaired permissions
Reset PRAM
Anyone have any suggestions or other troubleshooting ideas? Here are the steps to selling*:
http://www.macmaps.com/selling.html
Mac Pros that shipped with Leopard should install from the Mac Pro labelled discs. Those that came with pre-Leopard, you should still include the Mac Pro discs, though if you desire to install Leopard on them, you should also include the Leopard discs that are retail. Leopard retail looks like * and do not say Upgrade, DropIn, or OEM.

Can't do factory restore & only disks that keep ejecting are the osx install and apps disks
First of all let me say, this is my first Apple computer and I'm not experienced in forums. Please do not read rudeness into what is actually frustration at searching forever for a solution and trying not to wish I had been talked into an Apple. With that said....
I've had my iMac for about a year and a half. We had lost our internet and were using a hotspot for awhile so we could look for another provider and get online if we needed to. One day I signed on and, we didn't have an isp mind you, but the browser opened up to the dominant isp in this area saying a virus was detected coming from this iMac address? I thought that was strange and panicked so decided to do what I would on a pc, just restore the whole thing to factory settings. Everything was going smooth, (my updates were at 10.6.8 at the time)... when I restored I was back at 10.6.2. (osx disk) I was doing systems updates and one apparently hung.... when told to restart, I did... but the computer would never boot back up. It would turn on.... go to gray screen... then blue screen... then shut off. I couldn't boot in safe mode, pram reset did nothing, smc reset did nothing, couldn't hold 'd' to get to diagnostics, couldn't boot to recovery... it kept spitting out disks after trying to read them... with all those solutions I found online and nothing helping I had to call Apple... they couldn't help over the phone because Apple Care expired, unless I purchased help... this frustrated me because every where I found my problem and a different solution their Apple Care had expired too.... so had to set an appt at an Apple store.
So took it in to Apple, just got it back yesterday. I let them know I was restoring to factory settings so wasn't worried about losing anything. When I picked it up, I was told no charge... it was a software issue they saw where it hung and fixed it. I tried to ask questions about the 'software repair' but they didn't seem to want to answer my questions. It just says 'software repair' on my order. So I asked 'okay, so it's back to factory settings like when I bought it?' I was told yes and I said great that was my goal anyway. I get home and it's NOT like when I first purchased it or like a factory restore. Everything I was doing before it crashed is on there. So I'm back to trying to do a factory restore. But for some reason now, it seems the only disks that keep self ejecting are the osx install and application disks. I still can't do a boot recovery, AHT, or 'c' boot... since the apple disks eject I can't use start up to get to them.
I find it odd that both the oxc install disk and applications disk would be damaged at the same time when they both previously worked. I called the Apple Store where I took it to talk to the geniuses that worked on it because I had a question about the repair they did....
Apple: I'm sorry we don't offer tech support
Me: I understand but I had a question about the repair done from there the other day
Apple: We are just a store and can't answer tech questions
Me: I understand and get that but since I took my mac to your store to be worked on I thought I could ask the person that worked on it a question about the 'software repair' and meaning and what software was repaired
Apple: No you will have to set another apt to bring your computer in if you are still having problems
Me: UGHHHHHH (pulling hair out)
So (a little late huh?) to make a long story short giving what I stated above:
Why is it, only the osx install and application disks not working now? They worked before taking it to Apple
What can I do at this point?
Can you do a factory restore without disks on a Mac?
If by chance both disk did for some reason go out, how do I get them replaced?
If I gave TMI without enough important info let me know.
My OS X install disk says version 10.6.2 on it
About this Mac currently says Mac OS X version 10.6.8
Batteries died on keyboard and mouse so am using usb wired keyboard and mouse
At some point I had used bootcamp and then later found parallels so I could install a Corel product and keep using... could some windows files be messing something up in there somewhere?
It used to say Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 and I could have sworn I saw it said 'snow leopard' in there somewhere, now I can't even find that word in search on the computer. Long post I know but trying to set what was going on at the time I took it in.
I'm not sure what else needs to be added to get this to the correct thread or help. As I stated my goal is to have it like I just pulled it out of the box for the first time so no solution will scare me off about loss of data.
Thanks for any help.Wow, sorry to hear of your experience. Seems strange that your disk would just eject like they did. It could be a lot of things but more than likely you just kind of have to start all over.
What I would do is insert your system disk and instead of going immediately to an install I would go to disk utility and erase the drive. That will erase everything on the disk and give you a new blank disk to start with. After that I would try to reinstall the system. Assuming that goes well then you should be restored to where it was when you purchased it. After that you can reinstall all your applications or personal files. I hope you have good backups.
I remember one time I was having a similar problem and don't ask my why I did it but I actually could not get it to install a system. I removed both of my ram sticks, shut the computer down for about 10 minutes including unplugging it from the wall plug, then reinstalled the ram, plugged it back in and started up from the system disk and all worked just fine. To this day I have no idea if pulling the ram helped but I have never had to do it since and for some dumb reason that solved the problem I was having, which is the same problem you are having now. Call it voodoo but it worked.
Good Luck!!

Can't boot from OSX Install disc.
Hello,
I am trying to restore my iMac from a Time MAchine backup and to do that I remembered that I had to boot off of the OSX install disk and choose Disk Utility. I thought that restoring from timeMAchine would be the hard and long part, but I am having trouble booting off of the OSX disc.
1.) I popped it into my iMac and it mounts and loads. Its runs fine so I know there is nothing wrong with the disc.
2.) I restarted my iMac and held C.
3.) The grey screen appeard and then the Apple logo and then the spinning icon underneath it. But it gets stuck there and doesn't boot off of the disk.
4.) I shutdown the machine by holding the power-button and when it restarted I held D. It ran the hardware test fine and I passed the hardware test.
5.) I shut it down again, same way in four, and held option. This time I chose to boot form the Mac OS X Install DVD. It again got stuck at the Grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning icon.
Does anyone know how to or can help me get my iMac to boot from the OSX install disc or how I can use Disc Utility to restore my iMac from TimeMachine?
Thanks in Advance & Best Regards,
theirf.Sorry, OE = Original Equipment - the grey discs that came with your Mac.
SL = Snow Leopard - Mac OS X 10.6.x.
theirf wrote:
What do OE and SL mean?
I think i understand though. You mean that any disc with a higher version of something will still work on a machine with a lower version of that thing right?
Not any disc. The only grey ones that will work are those that came with that Mac.
Any retail disc of a later OS version will work, and in most cases it would boot from an external HD with a later OS installed.
However, as Snow Leopard only came on two retail versions, 10.6.0 and 10.6.3, the choice is a bit limited.
The current retail version is available here. -
Using Mac OSX Install Disc 1, I am not able to get any further than the Partition tab. It allows me to select my hard drive selection, but will not allow me to make any other selections such as options. Does anyone know their way around this obstacle? Am I doing anything wrong? Thanks
Hello, The Hatter, I read about the 'trick' of backing up, erasing, and restoring too, but I figured it would take longer than defragmenting the disk.
But the defragmentation process has just finished! so I'm gonna try to run Boot Camp again soon!
Thanks for your helpfulness, anyway.
And P.S. I didn't clone my system onto the external drive, I just inserted the Mac OS X Install CD, rebooted holding down the "C" key, and installed a fresh Snow Leopard system onto the predetermined partition. I will use that in cases of emergency, when my main/internal system becomes unusable. -
Can Mail 3.2(Leopard) be installed on Mac OS 10.4.11
I just got a new MacPro with Leopard & Mail 3.2
I'd like to replace my Mail 3.1 that's on another system running tiger with Mail 3.2
Is that doable?
If yes, how would I go about it?
thanks
Jeff NJeff,
If the other system is running Leopard and has Mail 3.1, then you would only need to do a Software Update. Mail 3.2 is the version of Mail that should be present if running 10.5.2. There would be nothing you need to "borrow" from your Mac Pro.
Have you by any chance moved the location of the Mail application on this other system? Or have you reinstalled Mail from the OSX install disk, and forget to download and install the Combo Update for 10.5.2 over the existing system to bring Mail up to current version?
However, if running 10.4.11, then the version of Mail would be Mail 2.1.3, and you cannot run Mail 3.2 with that OSX.
More info, please.

Why is "renameIntegoContentBarrier" in the log of OSX install log ?
While I was searching for "Intego" on my MBP's disk, to clean up stuff left behind by Intego's VirusBarrier, I noticed that "Intego" was mentioned in the Install.log that I saved from when I reinstalled OSX (erase and install of OSX 10.5.6.)
Below is a small excerpt from the OSX install log.
Notice the "renameIntegoContentBarrierPre10.4.3".
Does anybody know why Intego is a part of OSX install? -- What that script might be doing?
Is OSX's parental controls authored by Intego?
May 1 04:35:56 localhost root[296]: Begin script: removeJava1.6DevPreview
May 1 04:35:56 localhost root[302]: End script: removeJava1.6DevPreview
May 1 04:35:56 localhost root[303]: Begin script: renameIntegoContentBarrierPre10.4.3
May 1 04:35:56 localhost root[305]: End script: renameIntegoContentBarrierPre10.4.3
May 1 04:35:56 localhost root[306]: Begin script: runChrooted.sh
May 1 04:36:02 localhost root[329]: End script: runChrooted.sh
May 1 04:36:02 localhost root[330]: Begin script: upgradeProKit
May 1 04:36:02 localhost root[332]: End script: upgradeProKit
May 1 04:36:02 localhost root[333]: 13 Install Scripts run.
May 1 04:36:02 localhost OSInstaller[157]: Performing post-extraction actions
May 1 04:36:02 localhost OSInstaller[157]: Finishing receipt
.....I have not reinstalled the OS on any of my Intel Macs so I can't meaningfully compare my install logs to yours, but at this point my best guess is that the 'renameIntegoContentBarrierPre10.4.3' script is something Apple included in the installer that was meant to disable or mark older versions of Intego ContentBarrier (prior to version 10.4.3?) for the "Upgrade" or "Archive & Install" Leopard install methods. That guess is based on:
1. It isn't unusual for Apple to include a bunch of installer scripts that check for special circumstances & do nothing unless they find them
2. A lot of installer scripts run regardless of the install method chosen
3. There were known problems with older versions of Intego ContentBarrier (see Mac OS X 10.5: Unable to quit running application or restart; "The application cannot be launched, -600" alert)
4. Apple installers have been known to disable third party items that conflict with the installed OS (some versions of APE, for example)
If I'm right about this, someone who has reinstalled the OS using a 10.5.6 installer on a similar model should find the same log entries you did. Maybe someone who has will see this, check their log, & post info that will confirm my theory ... or show that it is wrong. -
What can I do to start back up in Mac Leopard OSX?
What can I do to start back up in Mac Leopard OSX?
My Original Purpose: Partition Mac HD to original state after installing Windows XP via BootCamp Because I wasn't using XP. To do this I know I have to Boot from Leopard install disc to access Disc Utility to Re-Partition hard drive.
Action Taken: Insert Leopard install Disc, went to System Preference> Startup>Selected Leopard Install Disc.
Problem: Install Disc ejected while switching to Windows XP(+failing optical drive+). Then I received Lock asking for Root password. Unable to remember root. Would change root if I could boot from startup disc but unable to at this point. So I shut down by holding power button, rebooted holding down "c", now I'm getting folder with question mark in it. Searched Post here, found out that external drive can be used, but it has to be firewire. Pull out external LaCIE external DVD, insert Leopard install disc, Held down "c", only get gray screen. No lock, no folder with question mark it.
What can I do to start back up in Mac OSX? I've read post here on but nothing specific to problems i'm having. Don't wanna waste anyone time, but if you could just paste a link on my post or reply if this message isn't clear. Thank You.On start up is there any key commands that I can use to get me back to Mac OSX instead of inputing root password on screen?

Mac OSX install disc 1 won't work, it says "no bootable device" and a black screen
My macbook came already with snow leopard, so I have the osx install disc and the applications install disc. So I'm meant to put in the osx (ie install disc 1) install disc which lets me install bootcamp, which I do, and click on "start the windows installer" and "start installation" in bootcamp assistant, however every time I restart the computer to try installing bootcamp it just says in white letters across a black screen "no bootable device" and "insert boot disc", which I have already done!!
Am I missing something really dumb here, or is my disc faulty? From this guide
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup_10.6.pdf
Step 4: Install the Boot Camp Drivers for WindowsAfter installing Windows, install Mac-specific drivers and other software forWindows using your Mac OS X installation disc.
The Mac OS X disc installs drivers to support Mac components, including AirPort,built-in iSight camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and thefunction keys on an Apple keyboard.
The Mac OS X disc also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows and theApple Boot Camp system tray item.
To install the Boot Camp drivers:
1 Eject the Windows installation disc.
2 Insert the Mac OS X disc.
You have to be running your Windows OS (not Mac OSX) when you add the drivers from the Mac Install disk. -

I assume you are on ColdFusion 10. Then you mean surely: Server Update > Updates in the ColdFusion Administrator.
If you are indeed on 10, make sure you install the Mandatory Update first. That is crucial! You can do this manually by downloading the JAR file, and running the command: java -jar <jar-file-name>.
You could solve the Java security problem by relaxing Java's security level on your machine. I am on Windows, and can lower Java security settings in the Control Panel. -
Font change after Leopard OSX installation???
I recently installed Leopard OSX and after I went online for the 1st time after installation, I noticed that on many sites (yahoo, yahoo mail, bing, youtube, etc.) the default(?) font changed from what I believe was Arial, to what looks like (believe it or not) a Brady Bunch style font for certain sections displayed on the page.
I went to the Font Book and Arial is there and isn't disabled, so I'm not sure how to get rid of the new default, and get the original one back. Any clues???
Thanks! benHI Ben,
