IBook G4 Missing Ram?

I have been noticing a huge slow down in my computer and think that I may have found the problem. I am almost 100% certain that I had 768 MB Ram when I bought my iBook, but when I go to system profiler it says I only have 256 MB. Is there a way to confirm my suspicion. Could it be that one of my memory slots is bad? How should I proceed?

Did you buy the iBook used? I believe the max amount of RAM on the logic board for iBooks is 512 MB. You should have another module under the keyboard. These instructions show how to insert & remove memory under the keyboard:
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/ibg4-mem-cip1.pdf.
The amount of memory in the module should be written on a small sticker on the RAM module (ie 256 MB or 512 MB). Remove and reinsert the module and see if the computer recognizes all the memory.

  • IBook Repair, Missing RAM

We sent in an iBook G4 for a repair last week. We purchased the computer with an extra 512MB of RAM so it had 768MB total. When the computer came back from Apple the RAM was missing. The worst thing is that Apple is not going to correct the problem. They will not return our RAM and they will not pay for us to buy new RAM. We've already spoken to several people at Apple. Our next step is I suppose to file a police report. Any advice on resolving this issue?

These people are weird; had a similar situation.
I sent my iBook to the repair store for my "freezing problem."
They fixed it beautifully, but the outer case of my iBook looked as if it had been in the Iraq war for six days.
I called, complained, and I got my way.
All you need to do is call them up [AppleCare], with your orignal receipts (iBook and the extra installed RAM) and demand for your RAM to be placed back in. You have the proof, just fax them all the information as your proof. If they refuse, I suggest you take legal action.

    Hi..
    Try re downloading the iBook...
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Then sync to your iPad. You won't be charged again.

  • What iBook is missing...

I love to read books in their original language, so I really miss some additional dictionaries.
There should be a selection of different dictionaries with different languages.
Furthermore, I live in Italy and have access only to the Italian Store, which does not have many books and the few ones are not in English.
I want to use my iPad primarily for reading, give me a hand to get the best out of it
Thumbs up and a big "nice work" for the work you already did on the iBook application, which is the best one out there

In these forums you are just talking to other users, so best also post in the channel Apple has set up for such requests:

  • Books purchased through iBooks App missing on ipod touch 4 after updating to 5.0.1

I updated my ipod touch 4 to version 5.0.1 and now all of the books I purchased through iBooks are unable to load because "the requested resource is missing." When I go to Purchased items, it appears empty.  But why I go to the Store to attempt to rebuy the book I was reading, it doesn't give me the option to purchase, stating that it has already been downloaded.  Anyone else having a similar problem?  Or better yet, does anyone have a solution or advice???? Thanks.

If or some reason you failed to transfer any purchases to your computer before updating, then redownload them:

  • What is the best media player to use on iBook  500MHZ, 576MB RAM

Can anyone advise me what is the best media player to use to play .avi files on my iBook. I have tried using Quicktime (7.6.4) with Perian installed and it is very choppy. I have also tried VLC (0.8.6i)and that's not much better.
My iBook is 500MHZ, 40GB HDD, 576MB RAM running MAC OS X 10.4.11 with all updates installed. I have also disabled dashboard and spotlight but that's not made much difference.
    Many thanks
    Garry

    Well, now, isn't that interesting?
I left my iBook G3 800 MHz in Mac OS X 10.3 because I believed that upgrading to 10.4 would tax it too much. Others have successfully run 10.4 on their iBook G3s, and with the upgraded hard drive, I would have thought you'd be okay with it.
I generally don't do more than one upgrade of the OS past what my Mac came with. When I want to upgrade further, I upgrade my Mac.
I'm glad you figured out something that would work for you. Posting back to let us know may help someone else in the future, so thank you for that.

  • Low OS9 resolution on iBook and missing network files

    Greetings:
I have a 900mhz 14" G3 iBook and in addition to Tiger 1.4.9 on one partition and Panther 1.3.9 on the other, the Panther one also hosts OS 9.2.2, which I can use as a start-up disk via the Preferences panel (though it doesn't show as a startup option with Option key on startup). My problem is when I run OS9 it appears on a shrunken 640x480 screen (a rectangle in a wide band of black), which is the only resolution available that shows up on the OS9 Monitors panel. Other forums say I need a new screen driver that matches my OS version and my iBook, but where do I get such a screen driver to enable a full screen? Also, how can I fully update this OS because it seems to be missing the files to run Airport.
    Thanks for any assist!

  • Help - my Ibook has no RAM card in it

    Hi all,
I'm upgrading my husband's OS (he has the Ibook G4 and I want to install Leopard). So I purchased some extra RAM in order to do this and I'm in the process of putting in the new card, and I now I see he has no memory card in his Ibook - is this a problem? Can I just put the new RAM card in?
    Thx

What version of OS X is now installed?  With the added RAM does the computer meet the other Leopard requirements? Do you have a backup of the computer's hard drive? Have you done the following?
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • IBook Registers wrong RAM size

    Hello,
I have a weird issue with my iBook - I have the biult in 256mb ram and I installed a Crucial 1 gig stick in the other slot. It worked like a charm for a long time but recently I decided to run system profiles and it is showing that I have
    "Memory: 768 MB"
    What could be causing this?

Steven, I have not run the hardware test as I don't have a CD handy. I see there is memtest and techtool lite so I'll these.
Crucial will swap my memory free of charge so I'll do that first. It'll leave me with 256RAM for a little while which will be painful

  • Best OS for iBook 600hz/max RAM - 10.3.x? - 10.4.x? - Target Disk Install?

I am going to upgrade the system on a friends iBook. Right now it has a very early version of OS X. I would like to put 10.4.xx on there, but am wondering if for any reason, due to it's age/speed, I should use 10.3.x instead? I have installed 10.4.xx on an 800hz maxed RAM iBook and it works just fine, should I expect similar results on the slower iBook? Any other tips? Thanks
Also, can I install 10.4 on the iBook from a retail DVD, in the drive of my Intel mac, with the iBook connected via firewire as a target disk? (I don't think it has a combo or super drive, but connects fine to the Intel MacBook as a target disc)If not by connecting to the Intel, how about if connected as a target disc to the Powermac G5?

An iBook 600 MHz can be upgraded to 640 MB with a 512 RAM module if this hasn't already been done. If the hard drive hasn't been upgraded, the small hard drive likely is (in my opinion) to be the most limiting factor in using a modern version of OS X on it.
+can I install 10.4 on the iBook from a retail DVD, in the drive of my Intel mac, with the iBook connected via firewire as a target disk?+
No because you have to boot from the Tiger DVD to do the installation, and, as I understand it, no retail Tiger DVDs were produced to work with a Mac with an Intel processor. You perhaps could use an external FireWire drive to accomplish the installation. Or stick with Panther, which came on CDs. There are a few retail Tiger CD sets out there, too, in case you didn't realize that.

  • IBook G4 Missing HD Volume?

My iBook G4 will not boot up.
I turn the power on, hear the chimes, then see a dark screen. (No Apple logo, no pinwheel) That's as far as it goes.
BUT, I can boot from disk (holding down "C" after chimes), and when I get to "Select Destination" it shows no volume to select.
I can also boot it as a hard drive (holding down "T") and it shows a USB symbol, but when I hook it into another computer (MacBook Pro), it doesn't show up.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you absolutely cannot find your hard drive, there is a chance that it became unplugged from the logic board. The cable has a piece of yellow tape over it, sticky side towards the logic board. There is an aluminum shield that is next to the tape, and on my iBook the edges of the tape became quite firmly attached to the shield. It's possible that if this happened to yours, the connector may have worked its way out of the socket.
Were there any symptoms preceding the disappearance of your hard drive? Have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test? If so, were there any error messages concerning the hard drive? It's probably worth discussing everything that happened leading up to the disappearance of the hard drive in case there is a clue as to what might have happened. And to be sure the problem is with the hard drive and does not lie elsewhere.
Please post back with a little bit of background information and we can take it from there.
    Good luck!

  • IBook pages missing after syncing.

I purchased a book on the iPad. Started reading it and flicked through chapters it was complete. After I synced iPad to iMac, many pages show encoding error and are missing. What happened?

I have the same problem too.  What can be done?

  • HT4059 Why does my IBook goes missing when I try to look at the books from your stand?

Every time I go toIBooks to buy I have trouble with IBooks which goes back to my books I have already bought, all I want is to find books I want to buy but it just goes back to my library and not to the store, if you look into my site I have about 130 books and still am buying more so even when I have read them I keep in my library to remind me not to buy the same ones or about the author. So is there something I can do to stop keep going around and round till it works and it does not shut down,
    Thanks RJB

This may sound stupid, but I'm gonna throw it out there anyway. Is it possible, that if I have enough junk on my desktop it might disrupt the signal? It seems odd, but it kind of looks like my signal is strong and relatively steady now that I've cleaned my desktop. I do tend to get very cluttered. I use a lot of reference images and save text clippings to use later... it just piles up very quickly.
So, I wonder if all that extra effort my system has to do keeping up with the junk might have something to do with the drop outs?

  • Missing RAM after update MacPro to 10.5.7

    Hi community,
I installed 10.5.7 last night and got the following issue:
    Configuration (real one):
    MacPro 2x3.2 GHz Xeons
    32GB RAM
System Profiler 10.5.6: 32 GB RAM installed.
System Profiler 10.5.7 after first reboot: 24GB RAM installed
System Profiler 10.5.7 after second reboot: 28GB RAM installed
System Profiler 10.5.7 boot this morning (eight hours later): 32 GB RAM installed
System Profiler 10.5.7 reboot after Safari 4 security update (same morning): 28GB RAM installed.
I got the same information from the activity monitor.
What is 10.5.7 doing with my RAM? I want my 32GB back!
I'm hoping that booting five times will give me 64GB of RAM...
Hoping for resolution of the phenomenon.
    Cheers,

it might be a very strange coincidence if this would be a hardware defect. Cause all the time booting 10.5.6 all worked well and just after upgrading to 10.5.7 some RAM bars are identified as 2GB bars rather then 4GB.
It may not be as improbable as you think: Each major version of the OS (like 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard) has been more demanding of memory than the last, which not that infrequently exposes substandard memory & provokes comments much like yours. It isn't unthinkable that the same might be true for a minor version change (like 10.5.6 to 10.5.7).
But rather than guess about it, it makes more sense to test the memory & other hardware subsystems. You can use Apple Hardware Test (AHT) for a general check, especially since the problem seems to be in recognizing the size of the module at startup time rather than any specific memory cell defect. Since AHT is essentially a mini-OS purpose-designed to exercise the hardware, it is independent of any specific version of OS X you might load from either your startup drive or system disc. (That is why you must boot into it rather than run it as an application under some other OS.)
