IBook G4 – multiple characters show up when a single key is pressed

My iBook G4 was recently in a fire at my apartment. I lost everything but my laptop happened to be lying on the floor and was undamaged by heavy amounts of smoke and soot. I cleaned the exterior of the iBook up with a soft damp cloth. I used this on the keypad as well.
After the fire and cleanup the keyboard is acting erratic. When I press "p" for example I get an input of "p0-" or "p[9" Obviously multiple keys are being pressed down at once but there isn't any particles or trash in the keys as far as I can tell. I've lifted out the keypad and blown it out (with my lungs) and have yet to purchase any compressed air to try this method further.
The strange thing is that sometimes the keyboard works just fine. Moments later, however, multiple keys will begin being pressed.
Has anyone had this issue?
As a side note, does anyone have any hints on removing the smoke smell from an apple product (white plastic) that's been in a house fire?

You say it wasn't damaged in the fire, but it sounds like it's possible that the heat maybe "welded" the 2 top rows' keys together, or did it get wet when the fire was being put out? It's possible that a new keyboard might fix the problem, but you should look first at the cable that connects it and inspect it for damage.
Take the keyboard out and see if you can see something catching when you press the QWERTY keys. Also using compressed air to blow it out would be worth a try.

On the Autofill menu, I have checkmarked "Using Info from my address book" and "Other forms". I turned these two off, and typed in "auto fill" in the spotlight search. it came out as "autto fill". Is it possible that I typed in some words wrong, and it's remembering what I typed?

How to stop Firefox deleting active downloads when the 'del' key is pressed?

I tend to remove old downloads from the download manager by pressing the 'del' key. Before the update to the new download manager, Firefox would not delete downloads when the 'del' key was pressed, *if* it was still downloading. This is no longer the case, and you can now accidentally remove downloads that are still downloading if the 'del' key is pressed.
Is there a way to prevent Firefox from removing active downloads when the 'del' key is pressed?

How detect shift key release when both shift keys are pressed

Why is no event fired when a shift key is released if both shift keys were pressed?
1. Press left shift - keydown event
2. Press right shift - keydown event
3. Release left shift - no event
4. Release right shift - keyup event
So, we have two keydown events and just one keyup event.

I think that the two shift keys are logically the same key and both provide VK_SHIFT. Since they are the same key, it's still down when the left key goes up and so no up fires. This behavour is inherited from the underlying keyboard input system and is the
same as you'll see if you handle WM_KEYDOWN and WM_KEYUP in a Win32 app.
You can differentiate the VirtualKey.LShift and RShift keys with CoreWindow.GetKeyState() or GetAsyncKeyState(), but there isn't a direct way to catch your state #3 in action.

Japanese characters showing Junk when opened in MS Excel

Hello Friends,
I am working on a BSP project but this one is a little of ABAP as we are allowing some download reports via ABAP but all other interfaces via BSP..BUT eventually, we will be converting them to BSP download features.
At this point, I am facing a strange issue while downloading via normal ABAP but I am speculating I may face this issue even if I download via a BSP Download option. Here is my issue:
I have a ABAP report which displays vendor name and address as a list. Some of the vendor address are in Japanese Language and they are displayed properly on the report output ie on screen. (We have logged in as language JA). Now, when the user uses the SAP standard menu ie SYSTEM->LIST->SAVE->Local File-> and selects SPREADSHEET and saves the file as a .XLS on his desktop. When he opens this MS Excel spreadsheet from the desktop...all the Japanese characters are displaying as JUNK!
Since it is displaying properly on SAP, I am assuming this is something to do either with MS Excel or there is something going wrong when SAP downloads to Excel.
How can I get the Japanese characters displayed properly via the spreadsheet. Could anyone kindly help me to resolve this issue.
Our SAP is NON UNICODE enabled. We are on SAP ECC 5 ie 6.40.

I wrote to SAP about this issue and here is what they have to say and the solution they suggested.
the files which are created by the download as spreadsheet option are
no true Excel files (see note 569537).
Therefore the automatic import into Excel fails sometimes, and Excel
needs additional parameters to import such a file.
Could you try the following:
1. Rename the file so that the extension is .txt - not .xls.
2. Open the file in Excel via the File->Open dialog.
3. In the import wizard, choose encoding "932 - Japanese (Shift Jis)"
In my case (Excel 2007) the files were displayed correctly. The problem
is that Excel does not know the original encoding of the file, so the
encoding must be specified by the user.
We followed the same.

Field - Show only X number of characters; Show all when double-click.

I'm not too sure if this can be done.
I can to show the content of a field for only the 1st 15 characters and if user were to double-click on it, it will then show the entire field content. Is this possible at all?
E.g., the full content of the field is "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." The field should display "The quick brown..."

Can't get ibook to boot from external harddrive when hitting option key

Hello,
After owning a Pismo Powerbook that had it's hardrive replaced --twice--, i'm all about backing my shtuff up for my ibook.
I picked up a Lacie d2 external harddrive today, and used Disk Utility's Restore function to copy everything from the ibook to the drive. I can boot off the Lacie without a problem when I select it as the startup disk from sys preferences.
But I can't get it to boot from the Lacie when I depress the Option key while rebooting or starting.
any suggestions?

Let's be sure you are doing it correctly:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the desired boot drive (you will have to wait about 20 seconds before you can make the selection) then click on the large right arrow button. If this is what you are doing and it does not work, then you may need to re-prep the external drive and re-clone.
1. Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button, then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
After the above re-clone as follows:
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
5. Select the backup volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Check the box to Erase Destination. Skip this step if you've already formatted the drive.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

Multiple records in 0FI_GL_06 Cube for single key

Hi,
We have observed that after running f.16 (GL Balance CarryForward)program in R/3, those records are inserted into BW instead of updating the existing records for the key (Financial Year/PeriodBusiness AreaGl Code). This
resulting in multiple records in BW, resulting errors in Balance Sheet & Trial Balance.
The data target is 0FIGL_O06
Note 741829 tells about errors in R/3 updation routine. But, those symptoms are not visible in present case (creation of null records for current fiscal), but these information get updated in BW.
Has anybody encountered such an issue ? or any solutions ?

As Arun already explained why there are multiple records.......I just want to add one point........that always remember that delta means changes........and from DSO to cube........in Data Marting always takes place from Change Log Table of the ODS..........and Change Log table keeps track of all changed records........

In Active table data will be Overwritten....

How come multiple audiotags in ebook can play all together in the last version of ibooks and ios6 while before they fade eachother when play key is pressed ?

in ipad1 with ios5.1.1 and latest ibooks app audiotags stop the last music played when the new music starts
in ipad3 with ios6 and latest ibooks let all the music play together with a resulting mess
in ipad2 with ios6 ibooks fade the last tag that is playing when the play key is pressed in the new audiotag

Gah. So It looks like the first version of the song on your iPod is the definitive version of a song (as is the case in iTunes). So in order to ensure that the version you want plays, you have to:
1. make that the only version in iTunes (or first in the file structure)
2. update Genius
3. sync your iPod
BOO. Too much work (I'm still going to do it though...)
I would really like a feature that allowed you to specify which song would be chosen (the existing rating system would seem to be easiest).
Another solution I thought of still requires a lot of work. This is assuming you prefer It would go something like this:
1. Create an directory structure at the root of your library that would prioritize tracks, such as:
a) Albums (for full length albums)
b) Collections (for best ofs etc.)
c) EPs (for singles or remix albums)
e) Live Performances
-assuming you prefer album versions over remixes over live versions, or more directly:
a) High Priority
b) Low Priority
2. Place Each Album or individual tracks in their appropriate folder.
3. Reset your iPod
4. Sync
The directory structure will intrinsically place higher priority versions on you iPod first, making them a priority version there. Pain in the...

Default button being clicked multiple times when enter key is pressed

There seems to be a strange difference in how the default button behaves in JRE 1.4.X versus 1.3.X.
In 1.3.X, when the enter key was pressed, the default button would be "pressed down" when the key was pressed, but wouldn't be fully clicked until the enter key was released. This means that only one event would be fired, even if the enter key was held down for a long time.
In 1.4.X however, if the enter key is pressed and held for more than a second, then the default button is clicked multiple times until the enter key is released.
Consider the following code (which is just a dialog with a button on it):

I think I have found a solution. The behaviour of the how the default button is triggered is contained withing the RootPaneUI. So, if I override the default RootPaneUI used by the UIDefaults with my own RootPaneUI, I can define that behaviour for myself.
Here is my simple dialog with a button and a textfield (when the focus is NOT on the button, and the enter key is pressed, I don't want the actionPerformed method to be called until the enter key is released):

Tjacobs, I still don't see how adding a key listeners or overriding the processKeyEvent method on my button would help. The button won't receive the key event unless the focus is on the button. There is no method "enableEvents(...)" in the AWTEventMulticaster. Perhaps you have some code examples? Thanks anyway for your help.

No key event when compose keys are pressed

I am supporting a legacy application for Sabre which maps some of the keys differently. For example, on a French keyboard the Compose key which is used to put a ^ on top of the vowel characters is to be remapped to produce a special character called a "Change Character" that has a special use for reservation agents that use Sabre
The problem is, the first time you press the ^ compose key there is no key event apparently because the VM figures it doesn't yet know what key to report, it is expecting you to press a character such as 'o' and then you get an 'o' with a '^' on top of it.
If you press the ^ compose key a second time, you get the following key events:
keyPressed
keyTyped
keyTyped
keyReleased
On the screen you will see two ^ characters appear. Currently I remap the ^ character to the "Change Character", and I suppress the second keyTyped event so that I only get one character. The problem is that the user ends up having to press the key twice to get one "Change Character."
I have no fix for this problem because there is no key event produced when they press the ^ compose key the first time.
By the way, this behavior appears to have been introduced with jdk 1.3. The older jdk did produce a key event the first time you pressed the compose key. I would expect that this behavior was considered to be a bug and was fixed in jdk 1.3.
Is there some other way to detect when the user presses a compose key? If not, is it possible for future jdk releases to report a keyPressed event when a compose key is pressed? This event would not cause a character to appear on the screen, but would allow programs to detect when the compose key is pressed.
There is already a key on the French keyboard that behaves this way. It is the key to the left of the '1' key and it has the pipe symbol on it. If you press Shift plus this pipe key, no character is produces but a keyPressed event with a keycode of 222 is produced. I merely point this out to show that there is a way to report key events whithout producing output on the screen.

I don't know if this actually helps, but it seems that you can bind an Action to a dead key like the circumflex of the French keyboard

Can Captivate be set to advance when only a certain key is pressed

I am doing software training simulation. I am trying to teach the user how to do a set of tasks. In the software you must press certain key to accomplish certain steps so I want to set captivate to advance to the next slide only when the correct key is pressed such as the delete key. I am fairly new with captivate. Is this possible? Will I need an advanced action to do this? Thanks

Each interactive object, like a Click box, can be assigned a shortcut key. If you are capturing the software training simulation (Automatic), those click boxes are created for you. In the Properties panel of the Click box you can assign the shortcut key. Normally you do not need an advanced action for that. And be sure to give Infinite Attempts if the user can only proceed when that shortcut key is pressed (but avoid frustration, maybe with the Hint caption?)

Adobe Camera Raw ACR crashes instantly when hitting accent key

I just lost several hours of work because ACR 8 with PS CC2014 crashes every time you hit the accent key ´ which is under to the Volume up and down keys on a German keyboard.
An error message says: "The command could not be completed because of a program error." See screenshot.
Is that a known bug?

Yes you are, Marco.
The Adobe Camera RAW window is a modal dialog box. All its tabs are modal dialog boxes.
All dialog boxes MUST close when the Escape key is pressed, or a key that somehow acts somewhat like the Escape key is pressed.
You cannot get around that, Marco. Sorry if that irritates you, but that is reality.
All we do here is try to help people and offer workarounds.
If you're prone to hitting that key too often accidentally, perhaps the workaround would be for you to disable it, either by re-mapping the offending software keyboard layout, or by physically removing or otherwise disabling it in your hardware keyboard.
If the Adobe Camera Raw Team determines it is an Apple OS bug in the mapping of that key on a German keyboard, I can guarantee you that it will be quite a while before Apple fixes that.
I am now assuming you're on a Mac because of the interface shown in your screen shot.
I understand you are frustrated, and I feel for you for having lost many hours of work for a momentary gesture of inattention, but so far you have not given any details whatsoever about your setup.

Some pdf's that show up in my ibooks on my mac do not show up when I try to sync through itunes. Can't figure out why.

The transfer from my itunes book library to ibooks app on my mac (mavericks) went fine. The problems started when I tried syncing. The first time, everything went fine. Pdf's and ebooks showed up on my devices. I then added more pdf's to ibooks on my mac and when I tried to sync them with my devices, some show up and some don't. I thought it might have something to do with file size but again, some large pdf files did show up in tunes and some didn't.
Overall, not all things are mirroring like they are supposed to between the ibooks app on my mac and itunes, resulting in not being able to get all the content I want on to my devices via syncing.
For example, I will delete something out of ibooks but it stays in itunes when I go to sync. I'll delete it from all the devices and the computer and it will still be in itunes and will reload onto my ipad when I sync my entire library. To repeat, I deleted a book out of ibooks but it still shows up in itunes when I go to sync. Other books that I delete from ibooks do disapear from itunes and are no longer availalble for syncing, as it should be.
There was a pdf I changed to an epub in Calibre. I converted it in case the large size of the pdf was a problem. As an epub, it was a smaller file (8.6 mb vs 100 mb). I deleted the pdf from all devices and the ibooks app. I reloaded it into ibooks as an ebook. It showed up fine. I was able to open it with no problems. Went to sync it with itunes and it didn't show up nor appear on my ipad after syncing the entire library.
So, ibooks on computer is working fine. The content is there (or not there when I delete it) in what ever format I want it. I can open and read everything just fine. The problem is trying to get that same content onto my devices via itunes. Why does some content transfet just fine and some doesn't? Why does some content delete fine while other content can't be deleted from itunes? Why do some pdf's load fine in itunes and some won't?
My computer and my devices all have current updates.

I had the same issue. After searching around online I found out that you can try downloading another app (it can be any app) onto your ipod. After it finishes downloading see if your other apps open. You don't even have to keep the new app. Just see if your other ones work and you can delete the new one. That should work. If not, try to hard reset it. Here is another apple support link for steps on hard reseting it (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430).

Multiple devices showing in iTunes when only one device is plugged in

How come multiple devices show up in iTunes left-hand DEVICES column when I plug in only one device? When I plug in my iPhone, two of the same devices by the same name show up in the left hand column within iTunes, ALONG with two other iPhones in our family. Can anyone offer insight please? You may have enabled wifi sync on your iPhone.
