IBook G4 - No install Cds

Hi,
I finally came to apple's forum begging for an answer.
I work in technical support for a company, there a lot of ibooks laying around.
Thing is that one came to me with Ubuntu Linux installed.
I have to install mac os x 10.3 Panther, but noone knows where the cds are, so I downloaded it and tryed to install it.
When it boots the disk a big no sign appears.
Is there any way to install osx panther without the original discs that came with the mac?
thanks

Welcome To Discussions daneeeh!
You really should also have a set of system discs for future maintenance & troubleshooting purposes, and also if you wish to personalize the Mac, and eliminate any previous problems, by doing an Erase & Install, choosing to zero all data.
AS Kappy posted, Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
Once an OS has been installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.9 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
In addition to AppleRescue, again as Kappy posted, if you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some other online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, or CPU Drop-in DVD, on them.

What's A Computer Specific Mac OS X Release
Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
Before upgrading to any OS X version, check to see if your Mac needs a Firmware Update.
If one is required, you must start the computer from a Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 System Folder on the computer's hard disk, not from a CD, in order to install it.
Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.

Additionally, "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."

Orders must be mailed by June 22, 2007.
AppleRescue, also sells a Tiger installation set on CD.

Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs
The question of using system/software install CDs/DVDs on more than one machine is frequently asked.
    So, FYI:
System software installation CDs/DVDs, that come with a particular Mac model, are hardware specific to that model, and not intended to be used on other Mac models. For instance, the CDs/DVDs that are shipped with an iMac are not to be used on an iBook or eMac.
And the "Tiger" DVDs that are shipped with any new Mac, also are not to be used on other Mac models.
If such an installation were possible, or somehow accomplished successfully, that action would constitute a violation of your license agreement, which limits installation to a single computer.
The "Single User Software License Agreement" can be found here Software License Agreement.
Similarly, any "Upgrade" CDs/DVDs for a particular Mac OS will ONLY work for that Mac & system. For example, if a new Mac that shipped with Jaguar/Panther, was purchased shortly before the release of Panther/Tiger, the user may have purchased "Upgrade" CDs/DVDs, for a lesser price than the full install set. These CDs/DVDs do not contain all of the necessary components for an independent installation of Panther or Tiger.
The license agreement applies to single user retail versions of system software. The "Panther" or "Tiger" boxed set, for example.

Here are the requirements for Lion:
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/06/07/mac-os-x-10-7-lion-system-requirements/
In order to install Lion you have to have Snow Leopard and then update to 10.6.8:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Personally I suggest that you stop at Snow Leopard.  It still is the most efficient OS that Apple has devised and it still works great.  Go to the Lions only if there are feature that you really need.  There may be a price to pay in slower performance though.
    Ciao.

  • Can i use my ibook cd to install tiger on my g3 ibook?

Just wondering if I can install Tiger from the install cds that came with my iBook G4. I have 512 mb of RAM on my iMac G3 500 MHz, and I'm currently running OS 9.2.2. I'll have to install from my iBook via a firewire.
    Thank you!
    Alison

I doesn't matter if you physically have both machines or not. The license is to install it only on the Mac that it shipped with.
And... when you sell a computer you should include the original install media (and license keys) for whatever software you include on the hard drive.

  • Problem making disk image of Panther install cds...

    Hi everyone!
I want to make a disk image of my Panther retail install cds...just to have a backup in case I lose my cds or something. The problem is on disk 2 I keep getting an input/output error using Disk Utility. I tried to use SuperDuper and I got the same and the log shows this:

Funny thing is I had problems installing my Panther recently and I had to disable the German package because of errors during install. Does this make sense at all and can anyone help me to make a disk image of my Panther cds?
    Thanks in advance,
    Reg
    Powerbook G4 12" 1.5GHz 1.25Gb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi eww!
Yes that might be possible? That's one of the reasons I wanted to make a disk image in case my cds would be damaged or something. It makes sense what you say because as I mentioned when I did my install I had a hang up with the German pkg and I just skipped over it...good thing I'm not German huh?
If I clean it up and everything and it's still the same problem what are my options? I don't see a way to de-select this package when making the disk image?
    Thanks again,

  • Can I re-install FCP Studio (FCP7) without Install CDs?

My MacBook Pro (Spring 2011) hard drive died recently. The Apple Store replaced the 320GB hard drive with a 500GB hard drive. However, I lost all my applications, programs, and documents stored on my internal drive. Thank God I saved most of my content on an external G-Drive.
Is it possible to reinstall Final Cut Studio HD (Final Cut Pro 7, etc.) without the install CDs? I have the product key and support ID.

How can you install it without having the installers? What would you install from?
It's like trying to bake bread without having flour.  Or wheat!
It doesn't just appear out of nowhere.

  • Does 10.4.6 have two different install CDs for PPC vs Intel?

Does 10.4.6 have two different install CDs for PPC and Intel?
Also, is only CD 1 required for OS install?
    Thanks!

I tried my black OS X 10.4.6 CDs on a G4 yesterday specifically to see if an install from disk 1 only is possible. Sadly it is not. It requires about 400 GB from disk 2 no matter how minimal you try to make it. My disk 2 contains the following and the install needs everything except languages:
    AdditionalEssentials.pkg
    AdditionalSpeechVoices.pkg
    AddressBook.pkg
    Automator.pkg
    BrazilianPortuguese.pkg
    BSD.pkg
    Danish.pkg

Have you considered upgrading to Leopard? Here is my general upgrading advoce:
    OS numbers and names

    OS X 10.5.x - Leopard

    Upgrade to Leopard
Those wishing to upgrade to Leopard should be aware that install disks can be expensive unless you contact Apple. Details: http://lowendmac.com/deals/best-os-x-leopard-prices.html Standard Leopard installers impose several hardware limitations including speed and RAM size but all these restrictions can be overcome. Google for details. Leopard works well at 500 MHz with 1 GB of RAM and many happy users have less than this.
    Upgrade beyond Leopard
OSs beyond OS X 10.5.8 require an Intel processor. If in doubt check this: Click the apple at the top left of your screen and select 'About this Mac'. This will give you your OS number. Then click 'More Info' to see which processor you have. If it says PowerPC you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard and above. If you have an Intel Mac it is well worth upgrading to Snow Leopard now and then considering other options after that. You can buy Snow Leopard here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A

  • IBooks crashes on install with unkown error an brand new iPad 2

Dear Apple please help me spend more money with you by getting iBooks installed :)
When I tap install on iBooks the iBooks icon appears, and it seems to start downloading, but only for a few seconds, then a popup appears saying helpful like ' unknown error occurred', and the icon goes away, and iBooks is not installed.
I was able to install other apps on my new iPad just fine, and I installed lots of apps including iBooks in an iPad 2 in the office.
I rebooted the iPad, but I did not reset it yet - the only thing I could think off, is that the apple I'd I am using does not have a credit card on file just a gift card, but that should not cause one free app to crash upon download and not others
Anybody else having this problem ?
One of the key reasons we got an iPad for home, is to susbscribe to international magazines on iBooks -

I also received my new iPad 2 today and experienced the same issue
The first thing I did was sync the iPad with iTunes and restored from my iPhone. I'm wondering if that was part of the issue since I couldn't install iBooks on my iPhone either. Both devices were up to date with iOS 4.3.3.
I was getting the same "Unknown error occurred" message on both devices.
I tried what has worked for many - but rebooting the devices did not help.
What did work was downloading the app within iTunes on my Mac and then syncing the devices. This worked for both my iPhone and iPad! Yay!
I give credit to @the_paulus for helping me out and hope this helps anyone else facing this issue.

  • Where can I get replacement install Cds of earlier versions?

    Hi
I've acquired a very cheap old secondhand G4 Imac to use as a photolibrary and large E-photoframe.
Unfortunately the os needs to be reinstalled but the machine cames without any Panther CD's. Where can I get a replacement set of Panther (or perhaps Tiger) CD's without spending a fortune. The machine won't run Leopard so needs an earlier version of osx.
Apple used to have archived versions of it's osses available for download. Do they still do it? Presumably as 10.3 is now pretty old hat it would count as an arcived system...

Look over this list of iMac specs to determine what OS was originally installed. http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html
Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*. For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.
Also check these web stores: http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521 http://www.allmac.com/shop/index.php?cPath=5_10003
Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Look at this link Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger Installing Software Support Page
    http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/
You can also download the Tiger Installation and Setup Guide
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/TigerInstall_SetupGuide.pdf
When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.
If you do a Google search for M9227LL/A (Panther 10.3 retail install CDs) or M9228LL/A (Family Pack), you may find a set. The CDs should be black with a white X.
After you install the base 10.3.x, update to the final Panther version 10.3.9. See Mac OS X 10.3.9 Update (Combo) http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2464

  • Lost install CDs XServe G5

    Hi,
I am trying to bring back to life my G5 XServe. Sadly I have lost the install CDs for this machine. I called Apple Support to order new CDs to install OS X Server (?) 10.5.x and sadly it is a "Vintage" box. Anyone able to offer help? Donate?
    Thank you.

Would the Cd I borrow from my friend work?
Only if it's from the exact same model of Macbook. If you can't confirm that, call Apple support and order a new set of discs.

Could have been... do you have a supervisor who keeps track of what is ordered and how it is purchased?
Do you have access to the Adobe ID that was used to install the software so you may check the account?

  • Disk icon doesnt show up in ibook 10.2 install

    Hi,
I'm trying to reinstall 10.2 on my iBook g3 600mhz. When I boot from the install cd, I get to the point in the installer where I can select the disk to install on, but no disk shows up...The hard drive nor the CD. I've tried wiping the hard drive and still the disk doesnt show up. Any suggestions?

    Jacqueline:
When I boot from the install cd, I get to the point in the installer where I can select the disk to install on, but no disk shows up...The hard drive nor the CD.
The CD will not show up as you cannot install OS X to a CD. Your Hard Drive not showing up may be due to
    a. HDD not formatted or not properly formatted.
    b. Damaged or failed.
If your HDD is the original one that came with the computer it has probably failed and even it showed it would be rather unstable, anyway. If you installed a new HDD, you will need to format it first. Post back and let me know which of those conditions obtains. I can give you step by step directions for formatting, if needed.

  • IBook G4 Re-install - won't reboot with Panther DVD

Hi -- trying to reinstall Panther 10.3 with Disk 1 (holding down the 'C' button during reboot) - but it's not working. I get the light blue screen with the Apple -- but nothing else. The iBook won't reboot whatsoever thanks to the constant loading of garbage software by the 13 year-old owner
    Help!

    Hi Mark,
Definitely a PMU reset: Unplug the ibook, take out it's battery, and press Shift-Option-Apple-Power together for 1 second. Release, wait 10 seconds, and attempt to boot. (You'll need to plug it in or put back the battery first. I invariably forget this step. LOL)
If no joy, insert your OS install disk, then power on while holding the Option key. Keep the option key down until you see a gray screen. You should see little icons for your internal hard disk and the install media. This can take a while. Be patient. Click on the CD and then the right-arrow button to boot from the CD.
Still problems? Take up the ibook keyboard to reveal the airport card underneath. Take it out and reseat it and its antenna cable. A loose airport card can cause wierd startup problems.
Let us know how it comes out.
    Good luck,
    John

  • Ibooks stuck on installing update on ipad 3

Ipad 3 tried an update on ibooks and it continually tries to install.

Had the same problem for nearly a week and eventually fixed it by single tappping the app’s icon on the home screen which paused/stopped the download/installation (I then got a pop-up saying it couldn't be updated & to try again later). Now go back to the Apps store, switch to the “Updates” screen and tap “Update” to resume the download.

I want to do a Yosemite 10.10.01 clean install on my MBPr. Before that I make a SuperDuper copy so that I can restore some date . Yet I do not know how to do  this with my iBooks.
    Can I just copy ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks/Books ?
PS I d not wish to us the Migration Assistant as it will restore all sort of data I d not want back on the clean install drive.
