IBook G4 not seeing HDD.

My iBook G4 800 had been getting a bit slow at starting up and shutting down. Then a couple of weeks ago it started up displaying a message about the clock having been reset, almost as if I had reset the PMU. About ten minutes later there was smoke coming out the vent and it went dead!
I dismantled the iBook and discovered that the inverter cable/reed switch had been rubbing on the hinge. The cable appears to have shorted against the chassis hence the dry ice machine impression.
I replaced the cable this afternoon but the iBook cannot see the HDD. I tried the hardware test disk and it just states 'Mass Storage - Passed'. Typing "devalias" in the open firmware shows the device but typing "dir hd:\" and I get a device not found kind of error.
I removed the drive and fitted it to an external cradle which I then hooked up to my iMac. The drive seems fine and I was able to copy the important stuff from it.
After returing the drive to the iBook I used the OSX install disc and ran Disk Utility. But it didn't see the drive so there was no way to initilise the drive.
I'm at my wits end now, do anyone have any other suggestions? I am thinking about ordering a replacement IDE cable as a last resort.
Any further advice would be appreciated.

So I changed out the hard drive and the computer worked fine for 3 days and then it did the same thing.
This seems to suggest that your HDD may not be the problem. Try the old HDD you removed by putting it in a firewire enclosure and connect it to the computer and see if you can boot the computer from it. I experienced a similar issue with a iBook G4 which is detailed in the thread Could it be the logic board?. Your issue may be different, but the thread may give you some ideas for troubleshooting.

  • IBook G4 not seeing the Hard Drive

My iBook G4 does not see the hard drive. When the computer turns on I get the flashing smiley face in the folder. When I put the disk for the computer in then the computer starts up but cannot see the hard drive so I cannot get into anything. I even put the computer in safe mode to see if I could get it to work and I couldn't. I had a friend who works on computers look at it and he said I needed a new hard drive. So I changed out the hard drive and the computer worked fine for 3 days and then it did the same thing. I'm not sure if there's a problem with the logic board or really what is wrong with it. Please help

    Hello Rhonda,
You just need to format it in Disk Utility first, new HDs almost always come with Windows® FAT32 formatting.
Click on the icon/name that shows up on the left in Disk Utility.
Click on the Erase Tab to the right of that.
Beside Volume Format:, choose MacOS Extended (Journalled), give it a Name if you wish... any name you wish.
Click on the Options button, choose Zero Data, then OK.
    Select Erase button.
When it's done you can quit DU and install.
Don't worry, you can do this, and there is almost nothing that can go wrong!

  • Board does not see HDD

Am new at this, first time assembler.  bought MS-6524 board, 512mb, 133 mem and case w/300watt pu.
On startup (or anyother time) no hdd(s) are recognized.  CMOS utility will see CD-ROM but not hdd when attached to same ribbon.  FDD is recognized.
have tried hdds (2) on primary and secondary IDEs, alone and as master and slave.  Have moved mem from dimm 1 to dimm 2 and back again.  I don't think I have missed any combinations but this thing cannot find a hard drive.
Both hard drives are w2k pro, NTFS and work dandy in my old computer.
    HELP

Try clearing the CMOS depending on your motherboard using the JBAT1 or ClearCMOS jumper on the motherboard by moving the jumper from pins 1 & 2 to pins 2 & 3 for about 5 seconds and then move the jumper back to pins 1 & 2 but make sure you turn the power off and unplug the power lead from your computer before you do this because you could damage your motherboard.
Also have you checked to see if both IDE1 & IDE2 are enabled in the BIOS and have you tried autodetect IDE. Also some motherboards don't like HDD's and CDROM's being on the same IDE and you should allways put HDD's on IDE1 and CDROM's on IDE2 and you can only have two drives on each IDE.
If your HDD's are still not detected your motherboard probably doesn't have the support for them and you may need to update your BIOS.
If that doesn't work you could give this a try. Put the HDD's back in your old system one at a time and boot it up with Win 9X or Win ME boot floppy and select option (3) Start computer without CDROM support. When you get to the A:\ prompt type FDISK and press enter. You will see two messeges one about FAT & FAT32 and the other about NTFS, select Y for Yes on both of these messeges. When you get to the FDISK options menu select option (3) Delete partition or logical DOS Drive then select option (4) Delete Non - Dos partition. Now you need to select the partition you want to delete and press enter. When this is done you need to press the Esc key to return to the FDISK options menu and select option (1) Create Dos partition or logical Dos Drive and press enter. First it will check your drive and then it will ask if you want to use all of the disk space for this patition select Y for yes and it will start to create the partition. When it's done you need to press the Esc key untill you get back to the A:\ prompt. Now you have to restart your computer with the Windows boot floppy and select option (3) Start computer without CDROM support. When you get to the A:\ prompt type FORMAT C: and press enter you will be asked if you want to continue press Y for yes then press enter. When the FORMAT is complete you will be asked about the volume label just press enter. Now switch off your computer and put the drive back into your new computer and it should be detected.
    Let me know what happens.

  • IBook does not see Air Disk on AirPort Extreme

We have a few macs in my house (G5 desktop, MBP CD2, and an iBook G4). Both the G5 and the MBP see the Air Disk connect to the AE network but the iBook doesn't. iBook is running 10.3.9 and I use the "go" menu to connect to the server (IP address for the AE basestation). It worked last night with a different drive that I was testing. I purchased a new enclosure (Newer Tech's miniStack). The HD is a WD 250 GB. The AE basestation is set up to connect to the disk via the basestation's password.
    Thanks.
    Tom

To access the disk attached to the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) your iBook must be upgraded to OS 10.4.8 or better. See AirPort Extreme (802.11n) - Technical Specifications.

  • 60gb iPod does not see music files on my external HD

I'm going nuts trying to figure out why my iBook does not see the music files on my external HD.
I have a 250gb external hard drive (that I put together with an enclosure and HD I bought from Tiger Direct). I have the hard drive hooked up to my G3 iBook via Fire Wire. The HD comes up on the desktop, but none of the files are seen. Now, when I take the same HD and hook it up to my Windows PC, all my music is there.
I really don't want to have my iPod hooked up to my PC. My G3 is too small to hold all the music. I need to have the external HD to handle all the music for my iPod.
How do I accomplish this on my G3?
    Thanks!
    iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hyphen says:
[The] drive can be formatted as fat32 and be read/written by macs. He could also partition it, one partition as hfs+, the other as fat32. This can be done from disk utility.
The NTFS format (windows) has only read support for OS X.
How did s/he copy the music on the external drive? Was the music on his/her pc? If yes the hierarchy may be different for the pc version of iTunes library, or is it that he can't find the files even from the finder?
    And Red Dwarf adds:
Just to add to hyphen's reply, FAT32 has a maximum size of 32GB. The user cannot make the partition larger than 32GB should they decide to go down that route.
Another alternative is a utility called TransMac. When installed on a PC, it will allow the PC to recognise a Mac OS formatted drive and read the files within. No need then to worry about all that FAT32 and NTFS malarky stuff. It weighs in at $64 dollars though for a 1-3 user licence:

So hopefully, with Kappy's help, too, you will be able to figure it out.
    Good luck.

  • My iBook can't see my Linksys WRT54G router/network

What I said in the subject line.
This setup worked fine, absolutely reliably, for about a year. About a month ago I began to notice that my iBook G4 was not hooking to my wireless network, but instead to a locally-available "Linksys" somewhere in the neighborhood.
My wife's Dell, with XP, sees it just fine.
I've re-started the router and DSL modem countless times, turned off and back on Airport, rebooted the iBook, etc. Nothing. Right now as I'm typing, I can't see the network with my iBook, but my wife's Dell sees it okay.
    Any ideas?
(PS. I was using 10.3.9 up until yesterday. Just upgraded to 10.4.6. Same problem still exists with Airport.)

Well, whichever way it was set up, it worked absolutely correctly for about a year. I didn't change anything in my router's settings (nor those of my computer, at least deliberately), but a few weeks ago the computer began having trouble picking up my wireless network.
Yesterday my iBook could not see my network at all. I had to either use that random "linksys" network from a router somewhere around my neighborhood, or else use an Ethernet cable.

Please check out the following Apple Support article to see if your particular Power Mac model supports an external Wi-Fi antenna.

  • I am not seeing all the categories in iBook app.

I am not seeing all the book categories. I am seeing only biography, history, religion and travel categories. Also I think I can see only the free books. Others books do not show up in the search. Do I need to do any settings?

You don't indicate where you are located.  That's important because some locations do not yet have paid books.

If you cannot get something on iBooks, you need to get other apps like Kindle, Nook, or Googlebooks and try them instead.

  • HT4059 could not see the ibook icon on ipod touch 5th generation

I downloaded the ibooks app in App Store, but could not see the iBooks app on the screen. Why?

You've checked all of your homescreens for it, and tried searching for it via the spotlight search screen (swipe the first homescreen to the right) ? There is a limit of 11 homescreens after which apps are only accessible via the search screen.
If that doesn't find it then have you tried a reset to see if it appears after the iPod has restarted : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the equivalent of a reboot.

  • My timecapsule  does not see the attched HDD, what can be reason, what format of the hdd is needed

My time capsule does not see my HDD, what format of the hdd is needed

    What format is it?
The drive should be FAT32 or much better HFS+ which is
    Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
You should also use GPT (GUID) type partition not MBR as from windows.
Sometimes the TC will not recognise a drive and you need a powered USB hub.. even though the Disk has its own power.

  • Satellite 1415 does not see the HDD

I have just finished coping/cloning my old 30g HD to a new 160g via usb/ide cable on my Satellite 1415.
I used Norton Ghost which stated using the Copy MBR option I would "not" have to format the new drive. It took me over six hours to do this because of an overheat shut down during the first period which forced me to start over again.
Now with the new drive complete I installed it in the machine and on bootup got a "NTLDR is missing" message on the first try. After going into Disk Management (WinXP) I noticed that the new drive now had three partitions, two the very same size as the old hard drive and the last unallocated. I looked at the files in the first partition and found I did not need them so I deleted the files and the partition. The remaining active partition has all the op files I need so I assigned this a drive letter.
Now on bootup with the new drive I get Missing operating system message. Ive changed the boot order and tied to boot off of the Ghost CD but had no luck with that either. Obviously the machine is not seeing the drive so my question is how can I get it to see the new drive letter on boot when it now only looks for a C:\ drive?
The only option I see in the BIOS is boot order change. Thanks

    Hello
    For better understanding:
Is the whole HDD capacity recognized properly?
To be honest the whole story is a little bit confusing for me. I use Norton Ghost with WXP too and I know that you can create your own recovery image and burn it onto CD or DVD media. This media you can use for operating system installation.
You can also save the recovery files onto second partition and later copy them to external HDD.
With new HDD use Microsoft installations CD and install WXP. Create own partitions on new HDD and all ghost files copy back onto second partition (new HDD). You must not install all driver and tools but install Ghost on this fresh and naked operating system. Start ghost and choose option Recover My Computer. So after 20 minutes you will have WXP as on old HDD.
I have done this with my old Tecra.

  • IBook G4 Airport Extreme does not see any SSID

    Hi,
My iBook 1,2 Ghz has been working great for several years now.
I am working with Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.11) for quite some time
and it never let me down. I connect to the internet using an Airport Express
    connected to a speedtouch router.
The Airport Express Card in my iBook always found 6 or 7 SSID's of other
Wireless Networks in my neighbourhood and it used to login automatically on
my Airport Express wireless wetwork station.
Last week it suddenly stopped working correctly.
After starting OS X on my laptop the little Airport icon in the upper bar faded out grey.
When I click it it says it can't find any networks.
I checked all my settings, downgraded my Airport Extensions
and even installed a spare (refurbished) Airport Extreme Card.
Even with another Airport Extreme Card it does not see any wireless networks.
My other macs, a unibody MacBook Pro and white MacBook work fine with the Airport Express.
What could be wrong? Am I overlooking something here? Can somebody help me out?
How can i get my Airport Express/iBook G4 connected to my wireless network again?

    Hi Elko,
    Thanks for the reply.
I re-installed the original Airport Extreme card into the slot again.
But now i pushed it harder than the first time. (just like you said)
I noticed the second click, but that doesn't seem to be the problem.
Both Airport Cards (the original and the new) were installed correctly.
I also checked the antenna connection but that is seated o.k. too.
After re-installing the card, i booted into Mac OS X Tiger and checked the ASP.
It says a Airport Extreme Card is installed with firmware version 405.1 (3.90.34.0.p.18)
and the langauge version is international/worldwide. So far, so good.
Nevertheless the airport card does still not find any wireless networks or SSID's after
scanning multiple times. (Location on automatic)
I am planning an upgrade to Leopard today. Maybe that's gonna help, since there were some Airport Extreme updates in Leopard. If that's not the solution, I will stay with your other suggestion and buy me a nice USB dongle.
Do you have any idea what type of dongles work best with Leopard? I have seen some different models, but a lot of dongles require third-party software to make it work and are not automatically recognized by OS X.

  • Mac mini: OS can not "see" second HDD.

    Hello:
Through a series of unfortunate events I messed up the partition table of my Mac mini server. The OS can not "see" one of the 02 HDDs included in this mini server. Even trying to install the OS from the original DVD fails to see the second HDD, which used to have the boot partition and most of my data.
I boot up using the DVD into Disk Utilities, then I use the Terminal utility:
    diskutil list
    /dev/disk0 => 500 GB
    /dev/disk1 => 500 GB
    Please see screenshots here:
    http://www.nihpo.com/static/images/01.jpg

But here seems to be the problem:
    /dev/disk2 => 1.3 GB
And partition "2" in this disk has the label "Apple_HFS Mac OS X Base System"
Shouldn't partition disk0s2 have the label "Apple_HFS Mac OS X Base System" instead?
    Running OS X 10.8
Any suggestions on how to get the OS to "see" and boot from partition disk0s2 will be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not on 10.8 to be certain right now, but I don't think so...
