IBook G4 OSX 10.3.9 Airport Connection Problems

My mom absolutely loves her iBook but it has recently stopped getting the Internet. I have tried everything I can think of and I've looked through hundreds of threads and none have found the answer. There are three other computers in the house that are able to connect through Airport to our router (which is open) with no problem. However, when you try to connect on her computer it says that it is getting one bar but no more. It's impossible for the signal to be that low when everyone else has full signal. I'm open to any suggestion at this point! Please help!!

Hey lilangel and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
Exactly which iBook is this? If it's any of the ones up to the integrated Airport Extreme/BlueTooth card try swapping the card.
three other computers in the house that are able to connect through Airport to our router
Are any of these using a card compatible w/ your mom's iBook?
The card has a known failure rate.
Got 3 in my junk drawer.

  • Persistent Airport connection problems

I've been having persistent airport connection problems since upgrading to Leopard. It got so bad that I finally installed an Ethernet network in my office. However, I really want to be able to use my laptop in other rooms so I want to fix this problem if possible.
Here's what happens. When I turn Airport on, and then select my network, I am prompted to enter my password (even though it's in the keychain). When I click "OK", I get a "connection timeout" error and no connection is made. This happens on both my MacBook and my Mac Pro.
I am currently using a D-Link ethernet/wireless router, but the problem also occurs with an Airport Express which I used previously and still have. I am using mixed 802.11n and 802.11g with WPA personal security and "WPA only" mode.
One note: if I disable any kind of network security, I can easily connect to the network. So it seems to have something to do with the security setting.

Can you reconfigure your router to use WPA2? Some people have found satisfaction after switching to the security model: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7336628#7336628

  • IPhone 3Gs, Mac Pro Internet sharing via Airport connection problems

Hi, I have internet sharing turned on in my Mac Pro for the Airport connection and it works very well with laptops, but I have trouble getting my iphone 3gs to connect to it sometimes.
restarting the iphones does not help
stopping and starting the airport does not help
I can restart the Mac Pro, but that can be a pain, but does usually allow be to connect again for awhile...

I've been having the same problems as everyone else here. Trying to share internet connection from my ethernet wired iMac to my MacBook and my iPhone. Tried all the workarounds, but nothing works, or lasts very long.
Yesterday, I finally talked with AppleCare for over an hour. All their suggestions (trashing preferences, changing settings, etc.) failed, as well. The AppleCare person then put me on hold to speak to an engineer, who told her that Snow Leopard no longer supports Internet Sharing as of 10.6.1.
Not willing to accept that answer, I had them set up an appointment at the Apple Store Genius Bar for me, and after chatting with the Genius for a while, he also confirmed that Internet Sharing is no longer supported under Snow Leopard. Apparently, there were many hardware issues that the engineers decided to circumvent, and so did not include support for Internet Sharing with the internal airport in Macs. They said that the Airport it is intended to receive, not to send a signals! Yet, it worked fine, doing just that, under Tiger and Leopard! The only fix he could offer was to wipe my drive and take me back to 10.5, which I declined.
However both the guy at the Genius Bar and the lady at AppleCare inferred that Apple "may" release another update to fix this issue, if they get enough complaints and bug reports.
So, there you have it. Apple no longer officially supports Internet Sharing in Snow Leopard.

  • MacBook Pro and Airport connection problem

My MacBook Pro has a volatile connection to my Airport Express base station.
I have a 2-month old 15.4" MacBook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo), all software updates are installed, etc. I connect to the internet through an Airport base station. For the past few days my MBP has had a dodgy connection, slowing down at seeming random and then occasionally disconnecting from the base station entirely, although the Airport icon on the MBP is always on. While downloading a file I noticed that the speed of the connection was incrementally slowing until it stopped, and it was only after a couple of retries and then connecting to the base station again (by finding it amongst the other networks on the pull-down menu that you get when you click on the Airport icon) that my connection resumed at its previous speed.
My 12" PowerPC iBook connects to the internet over this Airport base station at full speed, no problems.
I've tried resetting the PRAM on my MBP without change.
One possibly noteworthy change is that this past week I updated my Parallels software to 3.0, which may have an effect based on some of the other threads I've read.
    What now?!

After trying all of the above the suggestions, the problem returned as before. However, after digging some more I discovered that the issue appears to lie with the 10.4.10 version of the Mac OS; when I checked the software log under the system profiler I noticed that I had installed that update at about the time my Airport problems began. Apple then quietly released a v 1.1 combo update to 10.4.10 on July 2nd, which once installed appears to have resolved the problem. You can find the download at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdatev11intel.html
What's curious is that originally Apple listed that the v 1.1 combo update resolved some issues with RAW image data, and some sound problems, which don't seem to have anything to do with Airport.

  • New Macbook - Airport connection problem

Hi All, wondering if someone can help.
I have just bought a new MacBook (yesterday) and have been trying to connect to the wireless network that I currently use with my Powerbook.
I can connect the new MacBook to the Airport Express to play AirTunes and access other computers on the local network, but cannot access the internet.
I am able to access the internet from my Powerbook on the same wireless network, and not sure why a brand new mac cannot access the internet via the same connection.
    Thankyou for any help
MacBook Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

There have been hundreds of posts on this forum and others regarding the latest batch of MacBooks with Atheros chipsets in the Airport Extreme Cards, which are 802.11n ready cards, currently running in b/g operation only.
We all are hoping for an Apple firmware/driver update, that will hopefully remedy the woeful inadequacy of connectivity with these cards.
It's too bad you don't have access to the router, as you could try updating the firmware.
I originally had quite a lot of difficulty with my new MacBook and connecting to my current network, so I'll list off a couple things that I tried and hopefully one will work for you.
-Turn off interference robustness if it was on.
-Install (or reinstall) this update if you have a Core 2 Duo MacBook->http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportupdate2006002.html
-Try and add the network manually in your System Preferences->Network->Airport settings. Choose Preferred Networks, and then the '+' button, add the network in that way. Maybe your MacBook will smarten up after that.
-Reset PMU and PRAM: Turn off your computer, and take out the battery. Flip over your MacBook, and hold down the power button for 5 full seconds. Restart, and before the startup chime hold down CommandOption+PR at the same time, until your MacBook reboots a second time, then release the keys.
-Drag com.airport.preferences.plist to the desktop from the root Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ folder and restart, then try to connect to the network. If you are successful, trash the file, as it was re-created on boot. If this fails, you can replace the file from the desktop.
Hope the above steps can help you in your quest to connect. Please write with what worked or didn't work for you, as there are many visitors in your same boat, unfortunately.

  • Airport connection problems after software update

I cannot connect to a Wi-Fi network I have been using for days. This happened after installing software updates for quicktime, itunes, airport extreme, safari and Security Update 2008-002.
When i run network diagnostics, it tells me this network needs a WEP or other password. It doesn't. My wife's macbook pro, on which we have not installed the same updates, connects perfectly, just as my macbook did.
Any thoughts pls? Can i uninstall the updates, or restore my laptop to a few days ago, as you can with windows?
    Thanks

You know... that might just work, but you have to find the .pkg in Library>Receipts that prevents you from running the older one, like maybe "AirPortSW.pkg" or something close. That's were it liooks to see what it can install.
(If it works, you could log in with a New Alias and give yourself a Solved Star, while being able to drop an Alias that is on the edge of being eliminated, or at least not going to get answers from many helpers here).
The other mention was a way to manually do it by finding the kext in a combo or security update!

  • Airport Connectivity problem

I have an Airport network in my house - an Airport extreme and Airport express
Here's the problem: When I log on to my iMac and turn Airport on, it not only fails to find my Airport network automatically, it finds my neighbors' WiFi first.
However, when I log on to my Powerbook, I don't have this problem. When I turn the Powerbook's Airport on, it automatically selects and connects with my Airport network.
I recently reset my Airports; before I did the reset I had no problems at all.
On both my computers, System Preferences/Network/Airport is set to join preferred networks by default. My network name is the only network listed; there are no other "preferred networks".
Why is my Powerbook connecting to my Airport network as it should but my iMac isn't?

Duane - I do believe the post you suggested solved my problem! (I have an early 2006 intel iMac. My security is WEP but it still worked.)
    Thanks much!
See if the information in KB 304482, Mac OS X 10.4.8: AirPort does not
auto-connect to existing networks after restart or
    wake from sleep is helpful.

  • Airport connection problems - solution !

In our company's office since a couple of weeks we have been suffering being unable to connect our Macbooks to the our wireless router. We have been trying any kind of WEP and other security codes etc. but there was no way to actually connect. Finally I found the true reason moreless accidentally trying out the most unlogically things:
Typically when you connect to your wireless network the a dialog will open that asks you for the WEP code. You enter the hexdecimal WEP and then there are 2 options:
    1) "Show password": allows you to visually verify the password
    2) "Remember my password in the key chain"
When the option 1) is active and you press "Ok" you will not be able to connect to the network. Vice versa, if it is inactive you will !
To be sincere this looks like a kind of bug to me ! So I recommend to provide an update for this as soon as possible. We have been 4 people trying to figure the problem during days, so an immense loss of time. And there was absolutely no thread on the web about this issue.
My general recommendations for connecting Airport to a misc. wirless router are:
    1) Use WEP
    2) Use a hexadecimal WEP
    3) Put the dollar letter in front of the WEP, such as $673A5B82 ...
    4) Be sure to deactivate the option "Show password" in the networkconnection dialog.
    5) Activate the option "Remember password in the key chain"
    Have fun !

Thanks for your comment. In fact my proposal although working and verified with my colleagues, does not working anymore after restarting the wireless router. It seems that Airport has still some pending compatibility issues which cause this kind of arbitrary behavior.

  • Intel iMac airport connection problems

    Hello,
My new intel iMac connected up to my 802.11g 3come wireless modem/router fine, the strength in excellent (always full or nearly full) but the connection is very very intermittent.
It will only work for a minute or so but then the internet will go down on the machine for about 30 seconds, then come back on.
The network file sharing also goes down. Other Windows PCs on the network do not have this problem.
I have tried the following, none has had any effect:
[*]Turning off all other network PCs
[*]Disabling all encryption on the router
    [*]Using different browsers
[*]Calling Apple support - first they asked me to adjust some networking options, we also setup a new network connection. They then sent me a replacement iMac - it's exactly the same
The firmware is up-to-date on the router.
I am aware there are similar posts in the forum, but other people's problems seem to be to do with their speed. None of the solutions have helped.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for your support.
    Davood

I wasted hours and hours trying to figure out a similar problem with my machine. Apple Support denied all knowledge of known issues, but then I came across a discussion titled "Will Apple react to the Airport problem with the new iMac (Intel C2D)?" - you will find it on the 5th page (at the moment) of these topics.
It is one of the largest threads I have seen in these forums (113 replies). I tried to add an update, but curiously the thread is now locked - Apple are obviously keen to censor further discussion on the subject.
Apple do now acknowledge that there is a problem with Airport and the Intel-based Macs. They are supposedly working on a fix, but when that will come is not clear.
I would urge everyone with Airport issues to pester Apple Support until they solve this problem.

  • Airport Connectivity Problems

    I'm new to Apple
Got a Macbook Pro. on Sept 2011
Initially everything was fine then Safari would halt half way through and lock when loading a site. I would shut Safari down but problem still existed till I shut down the Mac and re-booted. This would happen a couple of times during an hour session on the net ----- Then! when logging on for the 3rd or 4th time there would be no signal - Message reads " No Airport card installed"
    1. I am 5' away from the router
    2. There are 3 other Mac products and the PC I am using now that work just fine
    3. When I go into "Preferences" I am asked how I am trying to connect to the net - Airport is not an option
Please help or direct me to somewhere in Apple Support that could help me address the problem
    Regards

Take it to an Apple store or AASP.

  • MacBook OSX 10.4.8 Network connection problem

Hi, I am using a Belkin Wireless router at home, with a transfer rate of 11Mbps.
My problem is that when I am trying to connect to it, with a SSID of "WLAN", my MacBook (and previous PowerBook G4) will tell me there was an error connecting to the network. I think the only time I was able to connect was when I changed the SSID to a longer name. But this is a very starnge problem, does anyone have any ideas why this is happening? Thanks!
    Ke

I could be wrong, but I recall reading something that leads me to believe that AirPort can get confused if it sees more than one network with the same SSID. If so, and there are more than one network within range named "WLAN", that would be a problem.

  • Mac book pro 13 (v8.1) airport connection problem snow leopard

    Hi!
my MBP 13 (8.1). on Snow OS. It's 2 day old and I have a serious bug!  It was working perfect until batery power down... now won't connect to ANY WIRELESS. I can't turn on and off the airport on my laptop!
My network is an airport extrem (7.5.2). I own an older MBP (1.1) work perfect! I changed all possible setting of the airport (rebust network, 5ghz, 2.4ghz, 801a/b/n, password/no password, default setup, reset, etc...) nothing work for the new laptop anymore, and i did restart, change airport setting, bla bla bal...!
I will try to reset the 2 tings talked over other threads (SCM and PRCAM or something like so...), but ****, it's brand new, don't feel like reset a 2 day old computer... I've been using mac over 20 years, profesionnaly, and now i'm getting despointment... and big time!
    Thx!
    Mr Uneasy

If it's not your hard drive and it's not your system that leaves either your user account or your connection. But that wouldn't account for trash error messages.
Have you tried repairing your usser account by
Booting up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
From the menu bar choose Utilities then select Terminal.
    At the prompt type resetpassword
    Press return
The Password reset utility will launch (do not reset password)
Instead, click your Mac hard drive.
Then from the drop-down select the user account you want to repair. At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled ‘Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs’. Click the Reset button there.
The process takes a couple of minutes. When it’s done, quit the programs you’ve opened and restart your Mac.
If it's not that then you need to go to System Preferences > Users & Groups and remove your Login Items and test. I know the problem is that it's intermittent but you'll need to run w/o them for a while or in a fresh test account to see.

  • HELP ibook g3 OSX 10.2.8 no longer detects airport express wireless network

my ibook G3 OSX 10.2.8, airport admin utility software 3.1.1 no longer can detect the airport express wireless network (powerbook G4, OSX 10.4.11, airport admin utility 4.2; airport express, WEP protected, to DSL modem). i just installed an ipod driver update on the ibook, and wireless networking went down on restart. any help greatly appreciated!

    you name it : com.apple.airport.adminutility.plist
delete it and do as advised.
This isn't harmful, because it is only a preference list, so it will be created brandnew as soon as you re-setup the Airport stuff.
Mac OS X ( especially Jaguar ) has a tendency to corrupt some plists out of the blue, it is more or less harmless and can be fixed with recreating them plus permissions-repair.
Hint : repair permissions more than one time, it ALWAYS finds something to fix in Jaguar.
You cannot destroy something with these actions, because it is Unix maintance so usual routines.
A tool like cocktail or Onyx ( google them, onyx is freeware ) can help you run such ( and more ) routines on a scheduled base.
Always remember that OS X is no longer "the Mac OS", it is Unix with a nice Desktop, the critical things run hidden in the background, so it has to be treated like any Unix/Linux sort of OS, even if from the outside everything looks nice and kosher..
    Best wishes from Germany

  • Airport internet connection problems in OS X but not in XP or iBook

I have an iBook and an iMac, and the iMac has Leopard and XP on it. When in Leopard, most of the time, the internet connection is extremely slow and can never load a full page in Safari, always quitting halfway or the connection drops completely.
When I go into XP, the internet connection is perfectly fine and there are no speed issues and the connection is never dropped.
When I use my iBook, there is also no connection problems.
The crappy internet connection also affects Mail in such a way that I cannot quit Mail or Shut Down (until I force quit Mail).
I called apple the last time this happened and their solution fixed it, but the problem is back again.
Does anyone know how to fix this, or does anyone know if there is something wrong with my Airport?
(Its an aluminum iMac, 2.4 GHz running 10.5.7, and not using the Beta Safari)
