IBook G4 owner scorned: is the time right for MacBook?

Hello,
I am the owner of an iBook G4 (early 2004), which replaced an iBook G3 that was serviced three times in the first six months I owned it. Earlier this year, I had to replace the logic board on the G4 (ugh), and, frankly, two and a half years into ownership of the current machine, I am nervous.
When is it time to replace? What is the life expectancy? Are the new MacBooks plagued with problems, like the iBooks were? I'm starting to think thoughts of upgrading, but I don't want to jump the gun. I just feel a bit insecure about this computer and don't want to end up in trouble. I use my computer nearly all day, every day, to earn a living.
Advice would be much appreciated.

I've owned an iBook G4 12" 1.33, an iBook 14" 1.42, a MacBook Core Duo 2Ghz, and now, a MacBook Core2Duo 2Ghz.
I've been buying and selling, wheeling and dealing in my upgrades over the past couple years, and I love each successive upgrade.
All four machines were brilliant- never a serious issue. Like you, I am using my laptop most of the day, and as such, we're the kinds of users that are prone to having issues occur, due to normal wear and tear.
My mother uses an early 2004 iBook, and so does a co-worker. I replaced the hard drive and the combo drive on his for him, and on my mothers I replaced her hard drive as well. I replaced the drives with 5,400rpm drives, and they were even faster and more perky than ever.
I think you might have hit a streak of lemons- all of the machines I've come across, except for one that was badly misused by the previous owner and needed a new logic board have been great machines.
You'll really enjoy some of the changes from the iBook to the MacBook. I think they're well worth the money, and the performance is unbelievable.
The only drawback for me is the decreased battery life, which comes at the cost of performance I guess.
The rest- glossy screen, hard drive upgradability, ram upgradability, higher screen resolution, magsafe, apple remote/front row, increased airport reception, dual-layer dvd drive, right click tapping... awesome.

When I switch my time capsule to 5.0ghz mode the range of my wireless network drops significantly.  Near the Time Capsule my Macbook Pro works fine, in my bedroom I have almost no signal.  In mixed mode it works fine both placed.  Any ideas on how to get 5.0 working?  I thought 5.0Ghz was supposed to have a wider range.  Do I need to change a setting on the Macbook Pro?
    Thanks, W

I'm not sure if you understand that 5 GHz has some upsides, but also some very significant downsides.
The upside is that the 5 GHz signal will allow faster speeds.
The downside is that you must always give up something in order to gain something else.Unfortunately, the marketing hype about 5 GHz does not go into very many details about this.
In the case of 5 GHz, the 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so they do not travel as far or penetrate any obstructions like walls or ceilings nearly as well as 2.4 GHz signals. In many cases, in order to get good 5 Ghz performance, you literally have to have almost a line-of-sight relationship between your computer and the wireless router.
If you have a new dual band router, which broadcasts both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signal simutaneously, your Mac will connect to the best signal quality automatically depending on its location in relation to the router. In the same room, without any obstructions, it will connec to 5 GHz. But, take the laptop down the hall a few rooms and around the corner and the Mac will connect to the 2.4 GHz signal because at that location, the 2.4 GHz signal is not only stronger, it is also faster.

  • How to estimate the time needed for unicode conversion

    Experts:
I am going to perform an upgrade from 46C (non-unicode) to ECC6/EHP4.
In the action plan , it's hard to estimate the time needed for unicode conversion.
We do not have a sandbox to benchmark that time.
Could you please help share your experience here?
    Thanks!!

    Hi,
usually it is very hard to estimate a proper time.
There are some hints to get a rough feeling (SAP note 857081 and [SMP link|http://service.sap.com/~form/sapnet?_SHORTKEY=01100035870000380759&_OBJECT=011000358700001279022010E] ).
However please note that SAP highly recommends to do a Sandbox conversion - otherwise there is a high risk that the PRD conversion will take (much) longer than expected.
    Best regards,

  • Can the time out for loading a page be extended for busy sites?

    (Error:)
    Problem loading page
    The connection has timed out
The server at xxx.xxx is taking too long to respond.
    * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
Question: Is there a way to extend the time out for sites which are known to be busy?

This issue appears under two different Mozzila "Questions". Both appear to have the same OUTDATED, INEFFECTIVE ANSWERS. A lot of us are on WIN7 now and still have erratic network speeds due to cable multiplexing -- but have been trained to leave the registry alone. Has not anyone solved this problem -- other than going notoriously unreliable FIOS ??

How is ist possible to maintain the time dependencies for Abap Privileges?
In our Installation of SAP IDM 7.0 SP2 Patch 4 the time dependencies of Abap Roles are imported in the IC by Initial loads Jobs. How can the see / change the dependencies in our IDM Workflow UI? Presently nothing jet is shown, no Attribute is predefined..
Can anybody give us a hint?
    Thank you in advance !!

If you click VIEW/SHOW PLAYHEAD INFO, you will see the timecodes as you scrub. (Consumer timecodes, not pro timecodes).
This works if you imported your footage from a camcorder, either miniDV or AVCHD.
However, if you have imported an analog file, or saved a DV file to a QuickTime File, you may just see the file creation date in VIEW PLAYHEAD.
However, there is a trick to getting even these clips to display timecodes if you know the start time.
First pick a clip. Make a copy and drag it to your desktop, just so you don't lose anything.
Rename this copy in the following format clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss.current file extension.
For example, clip-2001-07-14 09;30;45.mov (note the space between the day and the hour)
This would be a .mov clip that starts with the first frame at July 14, 2001 at 9:30:45 AM
Then import the clip into iMovie. You now have timecodes at the playhead.

  • How to analyse the time taken for a query

    Hey gurus ,
How to find the time taken for a query to execute .
    Regards,
    Venkatesh

    Hi,
Time taken to execute a query = FRONT END TIME + OLAP TIME + DB TIME.
front end time is time taken to do format in BEX.
olap time is time taken to aggegate data in OLAP buffer.
db time is tme taken to collect data at data target.
    to fine all these information
goto RSRT -> give query name -> execute+debug -> it will display all the fields > check fields what ever u want.
    Regards,
    Haritha.

  • How to find the time taken for creating execution plan alone

    Hi,
Is there any way to find out the division between the time taken for query parsing, creating execution plan and actual data retrieval seperately? If I enable 'set timing on' I see the elapsed time which is the total time taken for all these 3.
Some of my queries are taking long time when I run it first time and so want to know what is it taking long, is it the parsing the query or creating the execution plan? (Since my queries run faster second time, I am assuming the major part was for parsing or creating the plan but not the data retrieval).
Also, where does Oracle keep the execution plan? Is it in the BUFFER_CACHE? if so, I tried flushing the buffer_cache and restarting the DB as well, but still the query execution seems faster compared to the first time. How long does Oracle keep the execution plan in the cache and is there anyway to increase this cache size?
    Thanks in advance!

The ideal way for finding the answer to your questions above, would be to perform a (sql) trace of your query executions. To see the difference in the trace-files, you might want to trace the first execution in one session, and the second execution in another session: so you get two different trace files, which you can then seperately tkprof, and investigate.

Execution plans are held in the shared-pool, not the buffer-cache. As far as I know they will be kept in memory in an LRU way (least recently used), just like db-blocks are in the buffer-pool (I know this is not entirely correct, but for all practical purposes, think of it this way).

can i buy a smaller macbook air (64gb) but use the time capsule for additional data ?

If you plan to store important "original" or "master" files and documents on the Time Capsule, then you might want to think about a way to back up those files to another hard drive.
Why? If the Time Capsule has a problem...and you have no backups....you lose everything.

  • OWB 10g - The time taken for data load is too high

I am loading data on the test datawarehouse server. The time taken for loading data is very high. The size of data is around 7 GB (size of flat files on the OS).
The time it takes to load the same amount of data on the production server from the staging area to the presentation area(datawarehouse) is close to 8 hours maximum.
But, in the test environment the time taken to execute one mapping (containing 300,000 records)is itself 8 hours.
The version of Oracle database on both the test and production servers is the same i.e., Oracle 9i.
The configuration of the production server is : 4 Pentium III processors (2.7 GHz each), 2 GB RAM, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, 8 kilobyte primary memory cache, 512 kilobyte secondary memory cache, 440.05 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity, 73.06 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space
The configuration of the test server is : 4 Pentium III processors (2.4 GHz each), 1 GB RAM, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, 8 kilobyte primary memory cache,
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache, 144.96 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity, 5.22 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space.
Can you guys please help me to detect the the possible causes of such erratic behaviour of the OWB 10g Tool.
    Thanks & Best Regards,
    Harshad Borgaonkar
    PwC

    Hello Harshad,
2 GB of RAM doesn't seem to be very much to me. I guess your bottleneck is I/O. You've got to investigate this (keep an eye on long running processes). You didn't say very much about your target database design. Do you have a lot of indexes on the target tables and if so have you tried to drop them before loading? Do your OWB mappings require a lot of lookups (then apropriate indexes on the lookup table are very useful)? Do you use external tables? Are you talking about loading dimension or fact tables or both? You've got to supply some more information so that we can help you better.
    Regards,
    Jörg
