IBook G4 PMU problem?

I just recently got a 12 inch iBook G4 running at 1.07 GHz and it works fine other than every 4 or 5 hours it will just shut off randomly and I have to hold down the control-shift-power button combination to get it to turn on again. This is kind of annoying. Does this mean the on-board PMU is damaged? Do I have to get a new logic board?

Try running the computer without the charger for a while and see if the issue is still there.
Does the power cord stay lit up while it's connected? It should be green if the battery is charged and amber if it's charging the battery. The next time it shuts down on you, make sure that the charger is still connected and glowing. Is the connection secure or a bit loose?

  • IBook blueberry Battery Problem since Upgrading from 10.3 to 10.3.9

Hi, although I read through the tons of posts regarding this subject, the offerred solutions did not help.
I reseted the PMU, I tried running Battery Reset under 9.2, I recalibrated the BatteryManager so far I could, I drowned the Battery - still: The Battery has 0% and is "charging". but the iBook does not work running only on battery.
Is this software related, so that I have to go back to something earlier than 10.3.9?
The battery is fine and working when used under 9.2 and 10.3. Is it impossible to use 10.3.9?
    Thanks for your help!!!

Hi Sue, Are you using the iMac install disc on your iBook? The firmware on the iBook is different and will not be reconized. Did you migrate your iBook to your iMac? I can run a clone of my iMac on my iBook with no problems via firewire. So I think it is possible to do a restore from your iMac to your iBook and upgrade that way...But make a back up just in case!!!!

  • PMU Problem or Battery????

I have posted my issue elsewhere in here so won't go into too much detail, but my battery life took a drastic drop yesterday after charging it (it lasted 3 hours, then after charge only lasted 20 minutes). It now states 69 cycles and only 544 mAh capacity and the computer is only 14 months old. Would this indicate a battery problem or a PMU problem?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Mike

now I am finding that every time I unplug it the battery says something new. I unplugged it and it went pack up to 4200. I shut it off and when I turned it back on it said 784, then when that ran down I plugged it in and it went to 817, then when I unplugged that it went to 860. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is happening? Is this truely a battery issue or is it something more?

  • IBook G4 Power Problem

I've been combing the discussion boards and the problem I'm having doesn't quite fit with the posts I've found so far.
I packed up my laptop this morning and brought to work (I teach at a college) and when I pulled it out of the sleeve this evening to get ready set up for a class where I use Keynote slides, I discovered that when I plugged the power cord in, the light was green when it should have been orange (the computer had been sleeping when I packed it up).
The next think I knew, the screen had gone black. I rebooted, the blue screen appeared blue and everything was normal until the menu bar in the Finder slid into place and then the screen got really, really dark. I could see iCal opening up, but I couldn't see where the cursor/arrow was.
After trying a number of things related to resetting the battery, I don't know what else to try. Here's how my iBook is functioning at the moment.
When the computer's sleeping the white light is pulsating and the power cord turns orange. When I hit "return" and wake it up the power cord light goes green and things crank up, the screen is readable for a second and then I can barely see anything. After not more than 10 seconds, the computer powers down and sleeps again. My iBook doesn't seem to be taking inputs from the alpha/numeric keys either, but I plugged in the keyboard from my desktop and that worked. Likewise a USB mouse moves the cursor when the track pad doesn't want to respond. I can quite applications that opened at Login, and I can get iTunes to play. It's not overheating....
I'm almost at my wits end because I just don't know what could have gone wrong between packing it up this morning and unpacking it several hours later. I've never had trouble like this before!

if your computer is going to sleep before you login, then it will not be an energy saving preference associated with the user. then it might be a firmware or pmu issue.
you should reset the pmu :
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
you should also reset your firmware:
    - boot to open firmware by restarting and at startup chime, hold down appleoption+OF
    - release keys when you see the white screen with text
    - then type " reset-nvram " , then press " enter"
    - then type " reset-all " , then press "enter"
    - your computer will then restart
    this may resolve the issue.
if all this fails, then i would archive and install the OS just to try it out before sending it in for repairs

  • PMU problems...

I've been having iBook difficulties for awhile now, but basically ignored it hoping to finish the semester and then address the problem. However, I no longer have a backlight: put it to sleep this afternoon and it won't come back. After reading about the PMU, I'm wondering if some of my problems may be related. Can anyone tell me if they think I've concluded correctly?
Symptoms: intermittent track pad sluggishness, hard drive spinning (particularly when computer is hot and has been running all day or when more than one application is running), some system preferences changed upon a restart and new ones cannot be saved. I've also had msn messenger and firefox applications disappear, being replaced with a question mark on the menu bar.
I reset the PMU and backlight did not come back - though everything sounds like it's loading appropriately. I did however, notice some unusual noise toward the L side (general vicinity of USB ports) when I move the computer around.
    Thanks for any suggestions!
Snow White   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

It sounds like you could be having hard drive problems (the noise on the left side is likely coming from the hard drive).
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to help things out.

  • Ibook resets pmu automatically after charging

    here's a good one:
i recently replaced my adapter with a macally one (45w). i also replaced my battery. recently, i was having issues with my ibook booting up, but after initally resetting the pmu, everything was fine. now, it runs fine on battery or a/c, but when i charge my ibook, it will not boot on when it finishes charging, AND if it happens to be asleep when this happens, it shuts itself off. in every case, if i remove the battery, wait a few seconds, and boot up with just a/c, everything is fine, though the ibook automatically resets the pmu.
any ideas of what is going on? i have a g4, early 2004.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Does the shutdown happen at the same time each day? If so, go to System Preferences > Energy Saver and click on the "Schedule" button at the bottom right of the pane and make sure a shutdown isn't scheduled.
When you got the new battery, did you calibrate it?
Resetting the PMU may help alleviate the problem with it resetting the time. Just because it resets the time does not mean that the PMU has reset itself.
Every time there is a forced shutdown instead of a normal one, as it seems is occurring with your iBook (unless it has been scheduled for a normal shutdown), there is a chance of hard drive damage and you should repair the hard drive, either by booting into Safe Mode OR by starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key at the end of the startup chime. Then choose Installer > Open Disk Utility (in Panther) or (in Tiger) click 'Next' at the language screen and choose Utilities > Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with either Safe Mode or the Install disc's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on the hard drive.
Is the replacement adapter charging your iBook all right? Does it run it okay when the battery is not installed? I would suspect that maybe it is a problem with the adapter not working right. Can you maybe swap with someone who has an adapter that is known to be working right and see if it works okay with your iBook?
Let us know how things go.

  • Ibook G4 having  problem with airport connection when using secure network

    Hi,
I am currently using a brand new Macbook. I am connected wirelessly to a Comcast network through my Netgear Wireless-N 150 router model WNR 1000. The problem I am having is with the 4 year old ibook when I go to use the airport and connect to my existing network it says the password is incorrect. I spent time troubleshooting this with Netgear and basically we found out that the ibook does connect with the network when there is no security at all.
I erased the hard drive on this ibook to prepare it for sale and it is back to the factory settings. Is there some kind of firmware or drivers I am missing to use the airport as described?? I want to be able to show the buyer that the internet works etc. I also may want to install a few things on the ibook before the sale.
    Thanks a mil

Did you reset the wireless router to see if by default, it has a different
wireless security then, than however it presently is set up?
The question you pose appears to be marked "answered or solved."
When you reinstall an OS X, the setup asks if you have an existing
wireless connection, or if you will be getting a new one; by default,
the setup will make the existing one the automatic one for OS X.
You should not have to add passwords or other, unless there has
been one set in KeyChain or for the specific wireless base in question.
Tiger 10.4.x does not require you to have a set password for wi-fi,
but you will find several levels of secure options available in OS X.
Not sure why your setup and configuration is problematic. Usually,
a totally new OS X installation is without issue. Sometimes, you
may have to administer a base station via Ethernet cable before
some configurations can use it, but an existing network should be
easy, unless it already has a password security in place.
    The Mac will work without a password-protected wi-fi internet source;
often it will 'just work' even when moved to a new environment and
a neighbor's network, if not password protected, will appear among
other options in your vicinity and it will be automatically available.
Not sure if any newer OS X update parts, from the Combo update
files to take Tiger 10.4 to 10.4.11, plus others, would help the Mac
connect better to whatever wireless source of internet available.
I've not had that issue, as you state, except for when someone has
a protected network or passwords in place. Mine has passwords to
keep unauthorized neighbors from easy access; just in case.
In remote locations where few neighbors exist who could access wi-fi
from a lone source, no wireless security settings at all, work just fine.
I've done that; and found a little greater range was gained in signals.
And in the city (largest town in state) a computer I'd set up for use in
a password protected wi-fi network - later worked fine and found the
new owner's own wi-fi network without issues; and I had let the OSX
setup assistant do its job. If a local network is protected by WEP or
WPA2, etc with a password, one would be needed to access it. If not,
then the connection should be automatic.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Ibook - External Display problem

    Hi,
I have ibook G3 running on Mac OS 10.1.3
Its screen starts flickering and hence I connected new external monitor using VGA adopter.
It worked fine for a month. Now I am facing a strange problem... red colour is missing from external monitor.
ibook display though it is flickering, shows red colour
Monitor is new and I don’t think it is monitor problem.
    Any idea what's happening!!
    Regards,
    -Manoj

Have you tried disconnecting and reconnecting the external display?
    Yes. However, no change...
Have you tried restarting the computer?
    Yes. However, no change...
Have you tried calibrating the monitor?
    Yes. However, no change...
It could be that you need a new display adapter
    Let me try this...
    Thanks and Regards,

  • Ibooks author publishing problems....

i can't upload my new ebook created by ibooks author. I tried three times for hours and hours (10 hours...) but it still appears "authentcating with itunes store"... the books is about 85 Mb so i can't really understand. it should be easier.
    can you help me?

There are various other posts on this issue..  a recent one  was found to be the result a slow connection speed in  an African country "dial up"  rather than a broadband connection. After a  faster connection was found... the  book uploaded without issue.
Other have had problems with video formatting - even though the  auto optomisng  was carried out in iBA.
Are you sure your book  complies with the Asset guide and  everything is OK?

  • IBook G4 Display Problem

I am having a display problem that looks exactly like the video link below:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFzfdq3xMrI
What could be the cause of the problem?
    Some possibilities:
If the display cable, how can this be replaced without taking the whole thing apart - is there a simpler way?
If a video card heatsink problem, is this an easy fix?
    Many Thanks.

This appears to be a continuation of an issue you noted in September, as the
display had some problems then and after trying a few things, it seemed to be
    stable at the time.
Perhaps the components involved with the iBook then are behind this problem.
Does not seem any easy path could be available to fix the problem, since the
parts most likely to be affecting or contributing to the symptom are deep enough
into the computer to require tedious disassembly effort. And odd screw locations.
Looking into the iFixit guide for iBook G4 12" 800MHz to 1.2GHz series build:
    https://www.ifixit.com/Device/iBook_G4_12%22_800_MHz-1.2_GHz these
items may be weak or failing: the inverter, inverter/airport cables, and there
may be an indirect issue with the data display cable as they get bent & can
fail. The rolling & flickering image may be the inverter, but there are a few
components that essentially are not replaceable on the logic board that can
be the cause of display failure when these other items have not failed.
And a failing graphic processor or overheating may be contributory causes to
the symptoms. A complete diagnostic test, probably beyond most AASPs interest
may be required to troubleshoot the device accurately. So many don't want to fix
the older hardware, perhaps they're fearful of someone not willing to pay a lot to
have an older machine repaired. Hard to say...
You may need to enlist the aid of a specialist who restores and refurbishes
Apple portable computers and who has sufficient facilities to repair almost
everything in most any of these computer models... wegenermedia.com.
Since they have devised methods to fix these correctly & more efficiently
that may be a way to go. To call them &/or email after looking at their web
site can be helpful to discuss the matter and their processes of repair, etc.
Sorry to not be of much help, but in the process of locating correct service
and repair, you may also consider obtaining a second iBook or something
that can run the software of that vintage, to extend the usefulness of it.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Annoying iBook G4 Audio Problem

My iBook is about a year and a half old and currently running OS 10.4.10.
I have, intermittently had sound problems where the right speaker would cut out partially or entirely. This is not the speaker balance issue that some have found and the various types of hardware resets have not had any impact.
Recently, the sound seems to be primarily coming from the left speaker only. I say "primarily" because the right speaker is producing sound, albeit at a very low volume. The headphones work fine.
Ideas? Suggestions? Software? Hardware? This machine is just a year and a half old and I'm pretty disappointed to be encountering difficulties at this stage of the game. Unfortunately, I'm away from San Francisco for another couple of months and will be unable to visit my local Apple Store for assistance until then.
Of course, this is the first Mac for which I have not purchased AppleCare. I shudder to think what this annoying problem is going to cost me to fix.

    Hi !
Sorry for my poor & bad english …
Well, my iBook G4 12" 1,2 ghz, running OS 10.5 has almost the same problem for some weeks.
    Facts =
Left speaker OK / Right speaker not functional
With headset : Left & Right OK but left iBook speaker still running !
Checking sound pref panel & utility sound & midi configuration, finding nothing except : playing test of speakers in "utility sound & midi configuration" very strange because if channel 2 is selected on right speaker no sound is produced, if channel 1 is selected on right speaker so LEFT speacker play !!!
Reseting Pram & Vram did nothing.
    Hardware or Software malfunction ?

  • IBook G4 (big) problem

I have just installed a new hard-drive into a 12" iBook G4. When I re-started the machine, and attempted to boot the install disk for OS10.3, the disk drive whirred for a few seconds, then...nothing - I got the blinking ?/finder face in the center of the screen. Furthermore, I get the same thing when I try to boot up the hardware diagnostics disk...yikes. Everything was working fine beforehand, and I should mention that I have installed a hard drive in another ibook before, with no problems at all.
Any thoughts? Its a friends laptop, I need to solve this, or be hated!

Only the first generation iBooks (800MHz 12") came with 10.3.0. If that has a faster processor it came with a newer release of 10.3 and the disc you have won't work. See the following article for more info.

  • IBooks on IPad Problem

Hi.....my iBooks application has started having a issue.....when I launch the app, the book case view opens but there is no books in it but then the app closes completely after about 10secs.....there are Books on it...but it seems to struggle populating them...
This only started happening in the last few days and there have been no new books added.
    Any guidance would be appreciated
    John

I'd recommend trying some of the things recommended in the Guide besides Resets, by which I'm assuming you mean the 'hard' or system reset. Boilerplate below summarizes the options:
From the Tips & Troubleshooting section of the User Guide:
    *Restarting and Resetting iPad*
If something isn’t working right, try restarting iPad, force quitting an app, or resetting iPad.
*Restart iPad*    Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPad. To turn iPad back on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
*Force quit an app*  Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPad for a few seconds until a red slider appears, then press and hold the Home button until the app quits.
+If you can’t turn off iPad or if the problem continues, you may need to reset iPad. This should be done only if turning iPad off and on doesn’t resolve the problem.+
*Reset iPad* Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
*iPad Still Doesn’t Respond After Reset*
+Reset iPad settings.+ From the Home screen choose Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. All your settings are reset, but your data and media aren’t deleted.
If that doesn’t work, +erase all content on iPad+. See Resetting iPad.
If that doesn’t work, +restore the iPad software.+ See Removing a Backup.
