IBook G4 - power on, chime, then nothing

I've had this machine handed down to me. It's out of warranty, and from what I can tell did actually work at one point. I've tried replacing the RAM, but nothing changes - when I power it on, I get the startup chime, then the drive spins up (as well as the fan at full blast) and then it doesn't go any further in the boot process. The screen never goes on, the drive doesn't seem to be accessed, nothing. I tried with a video adapter to see if maybe it was the display that was the problem, but that dog didn't hunt either, as they say.
Anyone have any suggestions?

jus..,
I too am having this same problem.
Not exactly.
I have taken it to an Apple Store but they said that it was a hard drive failure. My hard drive is fine,
Exactly
I'm using my iBook now with an external display.
My backlight works fine. Everytime I start the computer it chimes and then goes to the gray screen. After 15 seconds or so the external monitor kicks on and I can see the computer booting up. Are there any known solutions for this problem?
So,
Good backlight,
Computer works with external monitor - Good GPU
No internal video - Bad LVDS cable: either unplugged or broken.
Here's the take apart for the display:
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/iBook-G4-14-Inch/Display/84/19/
Down about 5 pages where the LVDS ..Actually it's page 15 and they call it the
"the display data cable"
If you're comfortable mucking about inside the iBook you could take it apart to the point where the top shield comes off and you can see the LVDS cable. It runs up the left side of the display. Usually where it breaks is near the hinge point if not at the hinge point. Moving the cable, esp pushing it back together might get the display working.
If that works it's a verification of a bad LVDS cable.
A complete repair would involve opening it up, finding the break, soldering and closing with heat shrink tubing.
or:
Replace the cable.

  • IBook makes startup chime, then nothing

iBook charges battery. 700mhz/256mb/20 combo with additional RAM
I have reset PRAM, NVRAM and PMU
I press the power button, I hear hard drive start, start chime, then nothing. Something is still spinning in there...so I hold the power button down, it powers down and then the same thing happens when I try to power it up again.
I have re-seated RAM and tried booting w/o the additional RAM.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

Safe Mode? If not, I suggest that you give it a try. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). Repair permissions on it.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to help things out.
Can I boot from a CD or something...?
Which version of the OS is installed? Do you have an install disc for that version of the OS? You could try booting from that if you have the proper install disc.

  • MDD light+chime, then nothing

I'm having a worrisome problem with my MDD dual 1ghz g4. It will sometimes turn off when in sleep mode. When I try to boot it back up, it comes on and chimes and I can hear the HDD spin up, but then it will just turn off. Usually after about 3 or 4 attempts it will boot up just fine.
I thought it might be the battery on the logic board, since the clock would re-set every time the machine was powered down, so I replaced it. That fixed the clock issue, but the machine is still turning off and taking several attempts to start back up.
I have no idea what is causing this. One thing I do know is that this house is pretty old and the wiring seems iffy. I have a battery backup on another machine and sometimes it will start beeping like it's lost power, but it's still plugged in and the light indicating that it's receiving power is on, so I think sometimes the power from the wall fluctuates. This might explain the MDD spontaneously shutting off, but does it explain the difficulty restarting?
    UPDATE:
I just turned on my external FireWire drive to back-up my system and it wouldn't mount. I thought that was strange, so I had a look in System Profiler and under FireWire it says "no information."
I tried to run a hardware test using Tech Tool Pro, and the FireWire test was grayed-out (unavailable). It looks like my FireWire has just stopped working!
Also, now every time I try to re-start, the machine goes through the regular routine, chimes and shuts off. This is scary--can anyone help?

Try a PMU reset. Sometimes this needs to be done after a battery is installed.
Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work! First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that didn't work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
If that still didn't get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is
Apple KB HT1317 on getting FireWire to work.

  • No startup multiple chimes then nothing

Yesterday my Mac Pro froze. The screen then got a strange checkerboard pattern of grey and red. I held down the power button to turn it off. I then tried to restart it. Power goes on and it makes 5 startup chimes. No video comes on. Computer seems to pause and stop sending power over to the monitor. Then it tries again with five more startup chimes. Still nothing. It just does this over and over until I shut it off by holding down the power key. What's happened?

I took it to Apple. The sad news is that it has a dead processor and a dead RAM riser card. It's going to cost $900 to repair. They're "hoping" that that is all that is wrong. I'm afraid this is all my fault. In the three years I've owned it, I never cleaned the inside of it. When the Apple guy opened the case it was caked with mountains of dust. Very embarrassing and I think quite possibly deadly.

  • When I power up my 2008 Mac Pro I get the "welcome", chime, fan goes on, a light goes on on my Apple monitor and then nothing - black screen.  Whats going on?

When I power up my 2008 Mac Pro I get the "welcome chime", fan comes on, a light comes on on my Apple moniter and then nothing - black screen. What,s going on?

what you describe as the "welcome chime" is the indicator that your Mac has passed the Power-On Self test, and if a suitable source of software can be found, booting is likely.
If the screen stays dark, the most likely explanation is a graphics card failure. But it could also be caused by a backlight failure in the LCD, so be sure you try shining a bright light at the screen to be check whether the picture is there, but just not illuminated.
Graphics card failure will end the boot-up process in some cases, and not have an impact in others. Two external indications you can use when your display is not working are: The Caps Lock key, which is under the control of Mac OS X, and the Control-Eject dialog box shown below. Note that the default is Shutdown, so a Mac that shuts down in response to Control-Eject followed by Return is working fine.

  • My iBook will not display after Power up Chime

    Please I need Help.
My iBook (16VRAM) Does not display after the power up chime. so i have tried to reset the PRAM by holding down CMD, OPTION, P & R after the chime, But Nothing Happens, I dont hear a second chime (I dnt Knw how long am suppose to hold down the keys, But i held it for 2 mins and still nothing)
    Please help.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Aaron
Force quit in the middle of an installation spells "trouble". Try starting the computer in Safe Mode. If successful, restart the computer and see if it fully boots. If not, you more than likely have directory damage that needs to be repaired. Disk Utility may be up to the task.

  • Powerbook chimes when turned on, makes some noise, then nothing

So I went to turn on my powerbook and it made the chime noise, I could hear it start to boot up, and then nothing. The screen is blank, and it does not make any noise. However, it is still on, because I have to hold the power button down to shut it off. I really need my computer for school, so any input is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Melissa

    I have the same problem.
I clicked on Firefox to get it started, moved the attached mouse across the screen to click on an icon, and the screen froze. Tried rebooting using standard options but what would happen was:
    the Mac would chime.
I could hear the drive start.
Lights to hubs turn on but not enough juice to turn the light on for the optical mouse.
The keyboard will shut the Mac down.
I have been a Mac user since May, 1984 (still have my 128k)and very seldom have had assistance with problems because I try every option approved.
If I slightly depress the PMU reset button, everything starts up just fine. Can restart. Can switch drives (two external FireWire drives) and full boot will occur.
If I shut down, then restart... back to the chime and nothing else works. t did go into target mode a couple of times - the only "live" action on the keyboard other than the shutdown by the power button.
Someone suggested the PRAM battery (as he called it, the "buffer" battery). After boot, if I don't depress the button all the way, the correct time shows. If I depress it past the "click" point, it will reset to December 1969.
Any help would be appreciated and might solve both issues in this thread.
    thanks,
    lloyd

Upgraded new iPad to iOS 5 after successfully using the machine for two weeks. The apps I downloaded are still here, checked for updates, all okay. However, when I try to use iBooks app or even USA Today, icon shakes, settles down then nothing else happens. Several tries, settings appear correct. Suggestions? Safari operates correctly, music icon matches (not from iTunes, simply music on my MacPro and iPod). Is Cloud the issue, perhaps? But everything worked before the upgrade. Using my home network. Hope this info suffices. Appreciate any guidance.

Problem solved. Saw the solution in a more recent post. Downloaded a free app, then all my other apps started to work again.

  • IMac DV green light on start button lights for a second then nothing!

    Hi All,
My iMac DVSE 400 will not start up. When I unplug and replug power wire on back of iMac while in it is plugged into the wall socket..nothing happens, When I simply unplug from the wall sockect, the light in the on-off button turns green for a second or two...then nothing. Can you help me to diagnose and repair. Thanks.

I would suggest a PRAM reset. Immediately after pressing the power button, hold down the following keys; commandoption+PR. Let it chime three time, then release the keys.
    Hope it helps,

  • Hello. When I connect my imac Start, as usual, comes the start signal and then the white screen with the load signal then nothing happens. What could be the problem?

Hello. When I connect my imac Start, as usual, comes the start signal and then the white screen with the load signal then nothing happens. What could be the problem?

Presuming you get the chime, most of your Mac hardware is working and has passed the first part of the power-on self-test.
If the screen comes on, basic graphics is working.
The dark gray Apple is not present inside the Mac -- it must be loaded from a boot device. If the dark gray Apple appears, at least one of your boot devices has some capabilities. The flower petal/gear moves while Darwin is initializing and loading. If it stops immediately, something is terribly wrong.
When the screen turns blue, Mac OS X has loaded and your graphics card transitions to Interrupt-driven operation. LoginWindow task draws the login screen, and Mac OS X is ready for login.
What could be the problem depends on where in the process it stops, and whether the power light is blinking.

  • HELP! Macbook won't start, just gives start chime then repeats 3 bleeps??

Hi, I have a white Mac Book 13" bought December 2008 (sorry, don't know much more of the spec). It has always worked fine but yesterday when I started it (fully charged), the start up chime came on and then nothing on screen and the laptop immediately starts bleeping 3 beeps in a row, pause, then 3 bleeps etc etc. I have tried Apple, control power button (as recommended on forum) and the PRAM reset (also as recommended). I have checked battery, nothing else is plugged in. Yesterday after trying all of this I tried putting in the start up disc to see if I could reinstall but nothing changed it and the disc is now stuck in there. Somebody please help, what's wrong with it? Thanks!

Three beeps may suggest a problem with the RAM. You can remove one RAM stick and then the other and toggle which slot they go into. If your Mac still won't start in the different RAM configurations, you may need to see a specialist for additional diagnosis.
