IBook G4 problems archive and install or erase and install?

I have been having problems with my iBook G4 (it will be five years old this thanksgiving and it got a new hard drive just before the 3 year applecare ran out). I tried updating safari in may and I think that somehow screwed up my system. I can no longer use safari or open any adobe pdf files. also, when I try to run software update, it will bounce a couple of times in my dock and then disappear.
I can still use word and firefox (although firefox has been quitting with more and more frequency recently, about 4 or 5 times a night). I ran the disc utility and the hardware test and neither of those identified any problems.
I didn't do anything major earlier like an archive and install or reinstall because I couldn't find my copy of word in order to reinstall that, but I found it over the weekend and I am ready to try to fix my computer.
So here is my question--should I do an archive and install or erase and reinstall? also, I have three apple install discs and five of the software restore, is that right? I don't want to get halfway through the process and realize I am missing something.
the iBook is almost five years old, if I start all over, am I going to run into the same problem--that some of the updates won't work on my system and might cause problems?
Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum.
Before that you might want to try running a repair disk routine on the HD, and clear the cache files too. Download ONYX, a free cache cleaner from here: http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/download.html and clean the system and user files. Once this is done go to the next step.
Booting up while holding down CMD-S. Once the screen of code has loaded and the cursor stopped moving, type in *fsck -fy* (note the space after the 'k') and hit return. Repeat until it says the HD is OK. Type reboot, hit return.
Post back.

are you trying to format/erase it while it's in your Macbook?
    I have 2 Crucial M4 SSD.
Connect via external USB.  Boot your computer with your old hard drive and proceed with the erase feature if you're planning on cloning your drive.

  • Missing groups and memberships on Archive and Install vs Erase and Install

The shortname user group problem seems to be quite well documented now but I spotted another two differences. An Erase and Install Leopard machine has the following two groups:
    Screen Sharing 102
    Public 101
on an Archive and Install machine
Screen Sharing 101 and there is no Public group at all!
I don't believe this causes any problems per-se but is odd..anyone got any input?
It's also worth noting that my admin account on the Archive and Install Machine was not a member of the following two groups either:
    App Server Admins 81
    Application Server 79
whereas it is on the Erase and Install machine.....

Appears that you don't have a bootable backup/clone of your previous Tiger installation. Your current installation is screwed up, so I don't think it can get any worse. You could always try making a bootable backup/clone of the current installation and then go about trying to solve the KP problem, as detailed in http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

  • Archive and install or Erase and install

Gee!!! it is nice to be off of the Quicktime topics and moving towards a solution !,
After a disastrous attempt to down grade from Quicktime 7.4, it has become necessary for me to reinstall my system from my original D.V.D, which I have done before but it has been over 2 years. I am wondering how best to reinstall the numerous updates already on the system, which is Tiger 10.4.11 on a G4 power book.
I have and will reinstall the system using the Original D.V.D, thenI will install Tiger , and then iLife six ( without iMovie six), so far so good ? Then do I use Software updates to do the rest stopping at Quicktime 7.2 ?
The condition of the current system is as follows,
I can use safari, and Mac Mail, and a few of the apps that I had in the dock when every thing went crazy. Omni Disk Sweep is one of them, which I can use to see all of my system files and what is in the trash, I can also see all the system files and home folder browsing for attachments in mac mail.
What I cant access is Finder, it is gone, as well as my Desktop, the menu bar at the top where airport is shown only opens if an app is open and I cant open the trash to retrieve the files I ditched from the System files.
In preparation for a system reinstall I used target disk mode to move all of what I want from the G4 powerbook to my iMac using copy and paste (something always goes wrong with back up ), my iTunes Library ,Photos, Users library, Documents ,Desktop folder, Movies , about 54 Gigs.
With all of this done Couldn't I just do an erase and install and have a fresh new system? and are there any other files it behooves me to add to the ones I already have saved ? I still have previous system folders from past archive and installs, should I save those to?
I care a lot about my third party apps for iMovie editing and also saved my Users /Library/Preferences/iMovie folder where all the plugs are.

Doesn't really sound like archive and install would be of much benefit to you, with as fubarred as everything sounds. However, you would at least have what you had before, just in case there's some unixy or other obscure thing that you did in the past that you need to reinstall because of the reversion to an OEM state. After 10.4.0 is reinstalled from DVD, then apply the OS 10.4.11 combo ppc update to get you up to the latest and greatest in one fell swoop. I believe that QT7.4 came out later than 10.4.11 release so that should be okay. Don't know about QT7.3, though.

  • Help: Tried using disk install to erase and reinstall mac osx

Could someone please help me. I just bought a second hand macbook pro off someone and upon recieving it realised they hadn't erased everything and their user account was still set up and active as administrator. This means i'll have issues down the track doing updates etc.
I googled how to hard reset the computer to start from scratch and followed steps. Basically they were
    1. Restart computer whilst holding down the command and r buttons (which I did)
    2. When the wifi connection box comes up connect to reliable wifi (done)
    3. Then it said go into the disk utility and erase the mac os extended disk (the problem here is 1. the steps didnt specify that it should be the macintosh HD disk erased and 2. It should be the mac os extended (journaled) version, i've just fogured this out after a lot more searching as to why the reinstall of mac OSX wouldn't then work)
now i'm freaking out that i've done irreperable damage given that the mac OSX base system (mac OS extended (non-journaled)) has been erased. Can anyone please tell me if this can be reinstalled? Or what I should do next?

whereas in the macintosh HD partition nothing has been greyed out (so the option to erase is there, which im assuming means it hasn't been erased)

Does this help explain the situation?
That does help. The reason why the Macintosh HD partition is the only one where nothing is greyed out is that that's where your new OS X installation should be targeted (note that it's the only partition with room for a full OS X installation as well as your own files and applications). The option to erase is available in case you want to, for some reason, erase it again. Remember, you're booting from the Recovery HD and that's a partition on your HD too. You aren't allowed to erase the partition you booted from (hence, it's greyed out), and, since it's normally hidden, as are others, such as the EFI, it shouldn't be messed with anyway.

  • Livetype will not install after erasing and re-installing Tiger

    Hello,
I recently had to install a new hard drive, of which I partitioned, erased and installed OS X Tiger onto my PowerBook G4 15" (1.67/1.5 GHZ).
After all that, I tried re-installing FCP (5). The FCP part worked, but Livetype refused to be installed. So I searched for updates, and found an OSX Dual update, FCP update, and Livetype update, all of which were updated successfully. But Livetype will still not install for some reason.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Shawn

Sorry, should have been more articulate in my description.
During the installation of Livetype, after choosing the destination for livetype to be _Application support_ and starting the installation, the program goes up to 20% during the writing files procedure... and stops.
    Says Please try install again.

  • Reinstalling docs and pics after "erase and install"

What is the easiest way to load my documents and pictures back to my imac from an external drive after an erase and install procedure?

    Thanks.

In the sidebar of a Finder window, select the icon representing your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) At the top level of the volume are folders with these names, among others:
    Applications
    Library
    System
Enter Time Machine and select the most recent snapshot, which is behind the frontmost window. Are those folders present in the snapshot?

  • I shop for for apps on my ipod touch and when i plug my ipod into itunes and it says erase and sync what does that mean?

i normally shop on my ipod touch (because frankly i cant be bothered to plug it into itunes then shop! ) to shop for apps and song and etc. and because i have a wall charger in my room theres pratically no need to go the computer! so sometimes when im on the computer i want to use my ipod touch as well so i charge it on the pc.
well to cut the story short everytime i want to shop on itunes it comes up with this note that says "your ipod is synced with a different pc etc" then it comes up with erase and sync? so my question is what does syn mean? because im worried if i choose ok it would get rid of all my apps

  • Cannot manually manage music and videos without erasing and syncing first

I have an iPhone 3G bought new from the Apple store using 2.1. Using iTunes 8.0 and checking the "Manually manage music and video" checkbox, iTunes prompts me to "Erase and Sync", no other option is available to me. It was the same when using version 7.7 as well.
I'm not syncing to another computer, it's the same MacBook I've had for almost a year. How do I get the Library Persistent ID in iTunes to match the iPhone. I have the ID from the iTunes Music Library.xml file. I just need to know where the matching file for the iPhone is so I can make them match.
The ID doesn't match because I had to rebuild my drive a month ago and my question to Apple (actually Steve) is why can't I sync the other way from the phone to the computer.
Why does my library on the phone have to be wiped out. Who had the warped thought to come up with this genius idea.

I cannot express how disappointing this was for me to find out.
I want my music to be mobile, I don't want to have to copy it to every computer I want to listen to it on. I want to listen to it from the device, and be able to buy a new album at work or at home. This is a major disappointment for me, as every other device I have owned including my iPod Touch had this capability. I could authorize 5 machines and manually sync, and the music on that device could be played and managed on those authorized machines. For example, my wife has her own music collection, and I have mine, but we have a media center connected to our flat-screen in the living room, that we use for playing music when we are entertaining guests, and with our old iPods and iPod Touch devices, we could unplug one of our devices and plug the other persons in and listen to music from both our libraries without copying the music to that computer, as long as we authorized that machine for the both of us. Now with our iPhones there is no way to keep our seperate librarys and be able to play music on multiple computers in our house and at work, which we have always been able to do until our iPhones. The whole point of the iPhone for me was to be able to combine two devices and now because of the lack of this feature I still have to keep all our iPods around too... Dumb. I almost took our phones back because of this, and if apple doesn't fix it, I probably won't buy another. They should have at least mentioned this little fact before selling the devices to us. I know it's a different device, but it's similar enough that you expect it to work the same as the iPod and iPod Touch. It's not like I am wanting to be able to copy music from the device to multiple machines, it's exactly the opposite... I just want to be able to copy music to the device and listen to it at home and at work... why all apples other devices do this, and the iPhone doesn't is completely perplexing to me, and a serious oversight on there part. This pill would not be so hard to swallow if I had been warned about this prior to dropping almost a grand for iPhones for myself and my wife, expecting what I saw as a more advanced device to work at least as good as the other similar devices I own did.

  • Can you sell your old macbook and how to erase and reset info?

I recently upgraded to the new macbook pro and I was wondering how I can clean out my original macbook and get everything on it that was original so I can possibly sell it to recover some of the costs of my new macbook. Is this possible and/or very difficult? Does Apple frown on this? Thanks!!

    Hi,
I'm in the same boat. I have an older 13" black MacBook and bought a new 13" MacBook Pro. Your outline isnt' what I experience, yet it's similar to the Apple Article at
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1820
    They have the following steps:
These steps assume you have a Mac OS X 10.2.3 or later CD:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X CD.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the startup sound, press and hold the "C" key to start up from CD.
    4. When the Installer screen appears, do not click Continue. Instead, choose Installer > Open Disk Utilities.
    5. Select the hard drive to erase.
    6. Click the Erase tab.
    7. Select the volume format from the Volume Format pop-up menu.
    8. Click Options.
    9. Select the checkbox for "Zero all data".
    10. Click OK.
    11. Click Erase
I'm not sure if I'm obtaining what I want; Zero erase then reinstall. I'm using my OS X Leopard Install Disk. I did steps 1 - 3. As I held the "C" key, I got a gray screen with the Apple logo and a spinning icon below. It did this for about 3 minutes (my "c" holding finger was getting sore )
I never got a step 4. It went straight to "Choose a Language" I did: English
    I never got choices 5 to 11.
I got the screen showing the drive and asking if I want to install. I continued.
I then opened the "Options" tab. There I could erase existing OS install and then reinstall. There was never a choice for "Zero All Data."
I'm currently letting it do it's thing and it's in stalling, about 26 mins to go, already been about 20 mins.
Did I miss something, or is the "zero" option not the same for Leopard?
    Much thanks,

  • Trouble doing an erase and install

ocquired the panther retail disks I need to do the erase and install. I have an ibook dual with os 2.8 in it. I do not know who the administrator is nor the password. I learned here that I could do an erase and install with the correct disks. I want to clean this baby out and call it my own, so to speak.
So...have the correct cd's however when I try to install disk 1 (restarting by holding "c" down) i I get asked for administrator name and password ( of which I don't have ) What am I doing wrong. Prior to getting the cd's which arrived today, I received lots of help from you all concerning how to clean this g3 out. Ibook has plenty of hard drive avail. ( 9 GB) and I maxed the ram to 640. HELP!
    Thanks, Fran

    Hi,
I've actually had this problem recently many times. If someone has set a login and password you can't boot from an installer disk.
Here's how I've gotten around it:
1)Hook the iBook to your iMac with a Firewire cable and boot the iBook into target mode. It will show up as an external drive and can be erased and reformated from the iMac. Once that is done you'll be able to boot the iBook from the CD assuming the drive is OK/bootable.
    2) Pull the connector on the drive and boot into the CD reattaching the connector once you see the Apple. Hard to do since you have to have the iBook mostly apart.

  • Trying to Erase and Reinstall Yosemite from install drive

I am trying to prepare my 2009 Mac Pro for selling. I erased the startup disk from disk utility, and now I'm trying to reinstall Yosemite using an install file on an external hard drive. Every time I boot to the external hard drive, choose "Install OS X" from the utilities menu, and then wait for the "Preparing to install" screen. After preparing to install, however, I get the error message:
"An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again."
I had a working Yosemite install on this machine before erasing the disk, so I know it can handle it. The external hard drive is a LaCie Rugged connected via Firewire 800 (I also tried via USB). My Mac Pro also has two additional 1TB drives in bays 2 and 3 (both erased and empty).
