IBook G4 repeated power shutdowns

Hello!
I have an iBook G4 that I purchased in the spring of 2005. I have had increasing power/battery issues for one year now. Once last summer, my laptop went dead but the genius's at my local apple store taught me how to turn it back on and suggested I purchase a new power cord. I got a replacement power cord (not from apple directly) and my computer has had no problems for almost a year until last week.
My iBook has now started to go black and not want to turn on without my rebooting it after taking the battery out and replacing it almost daily and/or multiple times per day over the past week. I have to manually reset the time and date with each power failure. My battery power % appears to be fine always at 99-100% when plugged in. These power failures happen both if my power cord becomes even a milimeter loose from the laptop and while it is secured completely into the laptop.
My question is do I need another new power cord, another battery, or is my computer on its way out completely. Ideally, I'd love it to last 1 more year for school.
Also, I know I should get an external hard drive asap. Does anyone know if I get one now and back up my files from the iBook G4 and then later replace my laptop with a newer macbook will the external hard drive still work for my new model?
Thank you so much for your help and thoughts!

The iBook is quite old and this is the second battery since I've owned it. The battery was a used battery purchased on eBay. For the first several weeks I used this battery the battery icon in the menu bar would never show (Charged) and would not last long. Eventually though it gradually increased in duration and now does show (Charges) when it is fully charged like it is now. But then, it started randomly shutting down as described above. When it shuts down it is like the battery is completely dead (even if it still has 90% charge). The LED indicators on the battery do not light. However, if I plug in the AC adapter the LED's work again and the machine will power up and run fine (except for the loss of date and time and other settings typical of removing the battery).

  • Firewire 800 Port back to life after power shutdown?

I experienced a strange event and would like to share it with you for feedback and comments.
During several days the external hard disk connected to the Firewire 800 port of my IMAC caused me increasingly problems, and eventually the disk would not mount at all on the desktop. I connected the disk to the FW800 port of my portable and the disk worked quite fine. I concluded that the FW800 port of the IMAC was damaged. I was preparing myself to contact Apple to get the IMAC repaired.
Then recently we had a general shutdown of power in our town, for several hours.
When the power came back, I had the idea to reconnect the external disk to the FW800 port, and miracle, the disk mounted immediately and has been working fine since.
Is is possible that the ports of the computer come back to life after a power shutdown? How is this possible?
Can I conclude that it is recommended to disconnect a computer from time to time, just to reset some parameters?

Yep, both USB and Firewire ports can get in into a "bad state" and only complete removal of power will reset those chip sets.
Unfortunately, when you power down the computer there is always a bit of power still applied to the motherboard to keep things alive and this usually includes powering the ports to do stuff like detect when a device is plugged in or wants to wake up the computer. The downside of this is when a bus/port chipset goes into a weird state, locks up, etc., simply power cycling (shutdown & restart) the computer won't work.
So first thing to try is resetting the chipset and to do this you have to power down the computer and completely unplug the computer from the wall power (unplug the power cord to your Mac). Also unplug everything from the Mac's ports (USB, FW, Ethernet, etc.) to make sure no parasitic power is still there to keep the chipset alive. Now let it sit for a minute (give those big power caps in there time to discharge). Now plug stuff back in & start up the Mac. Now see if your USB or Firewire ports work any better.
Even Apple acknowledges this occasional issue...

  • Is ibook g4s power adaptor and ibook g3 snows power adaptor same

hi.im buy a ibook g3 snow but it doesn't have a power adaptor.so i wanna buy a ibook g4's power adaptor.is is ibook g4s power adaptor and ibook g3s power adaptor same?

it will work but it is not advisable, ibook g3 requires a rating less amperage than the G4 and therefore comes with a 45w power supply (1.85 x 24.5 V) not 65W (2.65 x 24.5). Using the 65W the battery will wear out first and the logic board will be subjected to greater sress reducing life itself

  • Time Capsule power shutdown

There was a power shutdown, and the time capsule is not working when power came back. The light is orange. What do I need to do?

Tell us the model number of the TC.. eg
A1254 Gen 1 A1302 Gen 2 A1355 Gen 3 are moulded into the rubber base mat first line. Gen4 is A1409 and written on the paper label where it always should have been.
Is the LED flashing at all.. if it is solid orange (amber) then the TC has failed to boot.. this is due to faulty hard disk or faulty power supply.
Try power down the TC and leave it off for several hours.. then power up again. Place your hand on it to feel or listen to the fan spin up immediately on power on.. and hard disk spin up after about 20sec.
Tell us the exact sequence the LED and ethernet port leds go through.
    This is the normal sequence.
It should flash green.. then go solid amber.. the ethernet port leds will flash very quickly.
After about 1min (bit less or more depending on the model) the LED should go to flashing amber.. then if everything is good, green.

  • IBook G4 no power

I have an iBook G4 (1.2 ghz) that will not power on. The battery shows all lights so it is charged and even when I take the battery out and plug in the adapter there is still no power. However, when the adapter is plugged in it does have the green ring lit up around it. I have taken it apart to check the power cable connection to the logic board and it was fine. I am leaning toward a logic board failure but the fact the adapter plug still lights up when plugged in is giving me hope. Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

If nothing happens when you power on (no start-up chime, Caps Lock key doesn't light when pressed, no light from Display) you should try resetting the PMU.

This happened to my iBook G3, and a PMU reset fixed it. It is still working!

  • IBook Won't Power On

    Hi Everyone,
I have a 12" 1.33 GHz iBook G4 (February 2006) that has been faithful to me for the past three years. The battery needs to be replaced (it holds a charge for about 10 minutes or less), but I've been avoiding the expense and have just been using it with the AC adapter.
I was using it last week when the adapter came disconnected from the wall. Usually, this would cause it to switch over to battery power and I have a few minutes to plug it back in before it goes to sleep. Last week, however, the entire computer powered down immediately (I wasn't met with the friendly sleep indicator).
I tested the battery on the iBook and it showed a full charge, but I can't get the thing to start up - not on the battery, and not on the AC adapter with or without the battery removed. Any tips on what I might try short of bringing it in to the Apple store? When I ran into problems with my old iBook G3 they used to try giving it a zap with a higher wattage PowerBook G4 adapter ... maybe that's what it needs :P
    Thanks!
    Matt

Usually, when a computer goes through a power outage
(and has no battery backup) the unit can be restored if
there was no surge or spike damages by resetting the
    Power Management Unit.
When you have a good power adapter and battery, with
all other things being OK, this reset should fix the matter.
Other parts which could go bad include the DC-in board.

Did you check to see if the original battery, or subsequent

  • IBook doesn't power on

Hello I have an iBook G3 500 mhx ppc g3 256 mb or ram 15 Gb Hard drive Dual booting Mac OS X 10.1 and 10.3. I was going to upgrade the os but when I turned it on I heared the Hard drive turn on and then It turned off and nothing on the screen. I tried turning it on several times and used different power sources since the battery is shot. The problem is it won't turn on. No apple logo, or bong. No video. Please help!

Although it may not help, it's the first thing an AppleCare representative would have you try.

  • Repeated unexpected shutdowns

    Folks,
this is a repost from a previous thread (I thought I’d solve the issue, but… no).
My Late-2008 Unibody MacBook 13" shuts down unexpectedly: after being up for a variable period (which seems to be vaguely correlated to the lapse of time the computer was off before), the shutdown alert appears ("Do you really want to shut down your computer" with four responses) and within a few seconds, the machine turns off (whatever I do, dismiss the alert or no).
The fact that the dialog appears leads me to suspect some kind of power button malfunction, or a malfunction of the controler chip that handles the button.
The only workaround I found is to disconnect the trackpad from the logic board. On this MacBook model, I suspect because real estate was so scarse, the USB controler responsible for both keyboard and trackpad managment has been installed directly on the ribbon that connects the trackpad to the logic board (physically under the trackpad). When I unplug the flexible ribbon from its connector, I lose trackpad and keyboard, but the machine runs fine (hopefully I own both a bluetooth keyboard and mouse).
I thought before that this problem was tied to using the computer without its battery (which is fairly easy on this model where the battery is freely accessible), but no, same symptom with or without battery. I cleaned the connector using a cleansing solution – no luck.
Of course, I reset whatever was resettable: SMC, PRAM, etc. to no avail.
The variable delay seems to indicate that a timing circuit somewhere leaks (it charges or discharges at a low rate whereas it should remain steady). It might be the RC integrator of the debouncing monostable, for example, but without schematics I cannot carry any measurement.
As a last resort, I could use my ’scope to identify which pin on the trackpad connector is wired to the power button system and cover it with some insulating coating. But this is at best going to be an extremly delicate operation, given the size of the connector.
If anybody has already stumbled on the same problem or has a bit of information that could be useful, I would be really grateful.
    Thanks in advance,
    Vincent

After a full day of reinstalling Mountain Lion in recovery mode with the problem immediatly recurring, I noticed that my iMac was extraodinarily hot when I touched the area where you can feel the slight vibrations from the disk drive running -[ I was checking it to  see whether the display was merely blacking out and wouldn't wake, or if the hard drive was actually lshutting down....]
Because of the extraordinary heat, I powered down the iMac for a few hours,  until it was totally cool to the touch.  When I turned it back on,  the problem had disappeared.....  I've been running the computer for a few hours now with no recurrance.
I believe the shut-downs/unwarranted "sleeps" were in response to overheating  (Apple tech support told me that if it was overheating that I should get some beeps when it shut down spontaneously,  but I did not get any indication of this fromthe computer -- perhaps because I have an older model iMac?
In any case, problem has now been resolved....

  • System power shutdowns in Premiere

My system is suffering complete shutdowns as if the power cable was pulled out. It sometimes happens when trying to boot up but always happens in a matter of minutes when I'm editing in Premiere, even with just 2 tracks and minmal effects.  A timeline will play fine for an hour but once I start trimming or moving clips it's lights out. I've now had this happen in three different projects so know it isn't related to a particular file or media asset.  A complex 20 sec.,30 layer After Effects comp has no problems, in fact no other program causes this to happen,
    Notes:
-- No hardware or software changes were made right before the problem developed.
-- The entire CS6 suite was reinstalled after the problem first showed up.
-- If due to hardware like a bad power supply (and I found some instances of that on the HP forum) why only in Premiere and only when making edits?
Thanks for any clues or thoughts,
    David

    Hi,
I'm making a ebook but there is a problem in iBook. In some chapters the first page will repeat untill the next chapter. Somehow changing the font in the app makes the problem disapear... temporarily. It happands on different apple devices.
    Is there a fix/workaround?
    Thanks.

I deleted my book and re-downloaded it, and the problem cleared.
    Go to your iBooks library.
    Push "Edit"

  • Ibook G3 Strange Power Problem

    Hi People
My Ibook has a strange power issue, it boots up when the battery is in. But as soon as you plug the power supply in it just switches off.
So basically it only works on the battery. The battery does charge though.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Luke

Hi Luke and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
This is the procedure from the service manual for the Dual USB:
"The computer runs with battery, but not with the power adapter plugged into
    wall outlet
    1. Try known-good power outlet.
    2. Try known-good power adapter and power cord.
    3. Reset the power manager by pressing the key combination Control-Option-Shiftpower.
Warning: Make sure you do not hold down the "fn" key when resetting the
    power manager.
Warning: Resetting the power manager will permanently remove a RAM disk, if
present, and all of its contents. You will also need to reset the date and time
(using the Date & Time control panel).
    4. Replace the DC board.
    5. Replace the logic board."

  • Ibook abruptly lost power and will not power on

I have a G4 Ibook. I have had it since Jan 06. I just got it back from having the optical drive replaced since it quit last April. All was working fine for just less than a day when it abruptly lost power and will not power on at all. The company did the repairs has trouble shot try to power it up and is arranging for us to ship it back. Any ideas of what it could be, and the likely hood it is related to the upgrade vs. a fluke occurrence that I will have to pay additional money to fix?
    CG

It's hard to say for sure, but if the iBook powered up perfectly before the repair and didn't power up after the repair, you could argue that the upgrade caused the problem and it shouldn't be extra for them to fix it. I'm guessing, but the power input and the battery are in the vicinity of the drive, and it seems likely that something wasn't properly assembled or got damaged and that is what led to the failure. I wouldn't expect an independently occurring fluke.
    Good luck!

  • My ibook loses battery power when turned off and unplugged

I have been puzzled by this since November 2006. I calibrated my battery twice as prescribed and still, as soon as i shut down my ibook and unplug it, it's battery charge goes down. Why is this? I'd greatly appreciate help. I'm a former pc user and none of my pc laptops have this problem. I just want to know why my battery loss power when unplugged and turned off. thanks in advance

Well you might want to try what they call "battery reconditioning" which is 7 simple steps listed below:
    1: Charge your iPod fully.
2: Use it till you cant trun it on anymore!
3: Then carge your iPod fully again.
4: Then Use it till you cant trun it on anymore!
5: One more time charge your iPod fully.
6: And then again Use it till you cant trun it on anymore!
7: Then one last time charge it fully again.
Reminder: it is best to let the battery die all of the way each time inbetween chages. for example if it has 60% battery life dont charge it use it till it is dead and then charge it up all the way!
*This should inturn maximise your battey life also!*

  • Ibook left without power... loses its mind?

A friend of mine had a lengthy hospitalization and left her 14 inch Ibook unplugged the whole time. Once back (maybe 4 months) she powered in the Ibook with AC adapter and it shows up like a brand new unit. She appears to have "lost" everything on it. How can she regain her old profile and therefore her data?

The only thing you might have lost is the date/time and maybe some settings like mouse/trackpad since the iBook has no additional PRAM battery (as oppposed to PowerBooks) to sustain its memory during a long power break or an empty battery.
