IBook G4 screen has lines on start up

iBook G4 12". On start the screen had vertical lines of gray, white & black. Then goes to blue screen, then lines again, but a different pattern. The curser is in the background as an arrow in the top left corner of a square that moves with the curser. Tried starting from disc with no change.
Any ideas?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
It sounds like it could be a logic board problem. Although never recognized by Apple as a production fault in the iBook G4 models, there was a known logic board problem with the iBook G3 (Dual USB) models,
http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/
and many people with iBook G4 models believe that a similar problem occurred in them, too.

Screen has lines funning through it, is it worth replacing screen on 2009 iMac?

What do you mean by lines running through it?  There have been users with vertical lines, sometimes blue, or yellow, or pink, or combinations.  Those have all turned out to be a bad graphics unit chip that the Apple store techs were able to remove and replace without replacing the entire logic board.
Take it to an Apple store genius bar and have the techs test and advise on how to resolve this.

  • IMac 17' screen - has lines and is freezing help!

I have a IMac 17' - My screen has lines across it and sometimes a triangle- If for some reason I'm able to get it to work past the users choice screen, it freezes within mins. Does anyone know how to fix or what the issue might be?

It's probably a bad video card or bad caps (the little soda cans) which are either swollen or leaking.  If your machine isn't an iSight, take the back off and inspect the caps.

I came home and attempted to power on my iPad2. I can see the backlight but nothing on the screen. When I try to reset by pushing the off button and the power button at the same time I can sometimes see the characters briefly but the screen has lines. Can someone tell me if there is anything else I can do before a trip to the repair shop?

If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • My screen has lines and yellow tint and at start up left third is white, right 2/3 is black

My screen has developed lines and at start up, the left third is White, the right 2/3 is black. Then it works again. Then it starts a loud noise like it's burning a DVD. Then it works again.

There is a known problem with a yellow tint on i7s.  I suggest you call Apple Care and tell them about it, it should still be under warranty.

  • Tungsten E2 screen has lines

    Hi,
My husband's E2 has recently had screen issues.  Currently when it's turned on it *might* display a legible image for about 2 seconds, and then the screen turns to a crosshatch of both horizontal and vertical lines, multicolored.  I can press keys and the image changes and I can touch the stylus to the screen and it seems to respond but of course nothing is legible.  I've removed the screen protector and tried all 3 kinds of resets with the only change being that with the reset I can read the screen at first, whereas usually it goes right to the multicolored disco screen.  I think it's toast but want confirmation, and perhaps a location where we can send it to be fixed.  Thanks.

Hello danlam, Welcome to the Palm Support Community.
It does sound like your screen has "gone South".      (My apologies to anyone living in this region of the US!)
Two repair sites we've been happy with - usedpdaparts.com and directfix.com.   Both charge about 1/2 - 3/4 of what Palm would ask you to pay!

  • Screen has lines through it after start up then grey sign states start up

I press the power button, the screen comes on with the apple logo and the scroll starts the screen the has many lines the grey sign comes on and says to start computer again and then the same thing happens

    Hi mate,
that whole story sounds really weirdo since after reading all this and knowing that youve tried almost everything doesnt makes it better.. :/
Usually I would say: update your BIOS, but you already updated everything. This problem could be BIOS related since the initialization of the hardware after a standby is controlled by the chipset trough the BIOS.
I guess it could also be something with the background light of the LCD screen (failed initialization after waking up), you can check this by reproducing the situation with the black screen and holding some light near the screen. If you can see some schemes on the screen (something like desktop, etc..) then it could be the background lighting. In such case try to reinstall the operating system and update all installed drivers to the newest version (yes I know, sounds like more pain).
Otherwise, click [HERE|http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/generic_content.jsp?service=EU&ID=ASP_SUPPORT], find the nearest authorized service partner in your country, contact them and ask them for a hardwarecheckup. Maybe its really a hardware related issue..
    Greets and good luck

  • Screen has lines all over it

I recently started up my MBP and this is what is on the screen.  Sometimes the lines won't be there and I can start it up, but then after a couple minutes the lines appear. Whenever the lines appear, it freezes the computer.  I think my computer is dead, but any ideas?

  • 5th Gen 30 GB iPod - screen has lines - menu not visible

Sometimes the menu is visible - sometimes not.  I have never dropped it, the glass is intact.  Just by clicking buttons I can play some music - just don't know what is going to play.  I have had it for many years, and though I have an iPhone and iPad - I still love my iPod for walking, etc.  Any suggestions that might help? (besides a new one).  Can the inner screen be replaced?  I have just reset & restored it to see if that might help - through iTunes.

You can work through the remaining five 5 R's of troubleshooting.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
It might also be a good idea to let the iPod's battery fully drain. Then charge it back up and restore it once more in iTunes.
Otherwise, it's likely a hardware issue with the iPod's LCD display, meaning you'll need to take or send your iPod in for service either via Apple or a third party repair service. Here is Apple's repair pricing.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
Note that they don't actually repair the device, but exchange it for one of the same generation, model, and capacity.  A third party service will actually replace the damaged/faulty part for a little less.  Google "iPod screen repair" and you should get a number of results to work with.

  • IBook G3 screen going dim?

    Hi,
My 12" iBook's screen has been misbehaving! This morning it flickered several times and went very dim to the point where i could only just see what was on the screen. I restarted, reset nvram etc but it was still the same. Later in the day it came back on but it only seems to be around half brightness although it occasionally goes as bright as it should it soon reverts back to dim. A quick google seems to point to the inverter board so i've picked one up off eBay, but i also notice there is a inverter lead, do i need to replace this as well?

    Hey Mark,
Not sure which iBook you have but look here for the takeapart.
    They're all pretty similar.
    http://www.baconeggs.co.uk/manuals/index.htm
it flickered several times and went very dim to the point where i could only just see what was on the screen.
So if it just gets dim and you can see the video still most likely it's the inverter cable if not the inverter. If you move the display up and down and it flashes on and off then it's definitely the cable.
Check it particularly near the hinge point. You'll have to unwrap the metallic cloth like tape there. Check it carefully. Usually it shorts out or opens up. If it shorts badly it will take out a tiny SMT fuse on the logic board.

    Hey wealthylives,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
As the computer screen is remaining black/blank after the hard reset, I would suggest the following document 'Troubleshooting Black Screen Displays with No Error Messages During Startup or Boot'. Please follow through the steps outlined in order.

  • IBook Screen Has fuzzy white image with colored lines on it?

Hi, I have an iBook G4 1.33 Ghz. I was using it the other day, then all of a sudden the image faded away and the screen turned white with little random blotches of colored lines all over it. It does this every time I start it up now. I dont think it is the graphics chip issue, because when I hook it to an external monitor or TV, the computer runs fine and does not crash. I get a perfect image on the external monitor, just no correct image on the iBooks display itself. I've tryed resetting PRAM and PMU to no luck.
    Any Ideas?
    thanks.

    HI Allen,
*"little random blotches of colored lines all over it. It does this every time I start it up now."*
According to this thread, it could be the logic board. http://macosx.com/tech-support/mac/ibook-g4-screen-turns-from-black-to-white-slo wly-on-starup/18233.html But it can't hurt to try maintenance anyway because clearly something is wrong.
Check the boot disk for errors. Restart your Mac while holding down the C key, pressing the power button and inserting your install disk all at the same time. An Installer window will open, but do not proceed with any installations. Instead, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities > Disk Utility. In the Disk Utility window click First Aid, and then click Verify. If Disk Utility reports errors, click Repair. When Disk Utility is finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. Select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
To check your hard disk’s S.M.A.R.T. status: Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.Select the disk in the list at the left, and look at the bottom of the window for a field named “S.M.A.R.T. Status.”
Check available disk space. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
Another suggestion is to boot in Safe Mode. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455

  • My macbookpro 15" screen has vertical blue lines

    Hello,
    I have a Macbook Pro 15" (mid 2010) 2.53GHz Interl Core i5 running OSX Lion 10.7.4.
Generally the computer and screen are in good condition and have had no damage.
The screen has Vertical blue lines and there is a tint of blue generally. The startup apple grey screen however is perfect, it is only when it enters the login screen that the lines appear. All the colours are off. Other than these lines the computer works perfectly
The computer was used yesterday (09 June 2012) without a problem for approx 1hour. It was then left for the day indoors on a desk out of direct sunlight. The computer was switched on later that evening and the problem started to appear
I have already tried to reset the PRAM and SMC with no affect.
I also read that it may be a cable problem, however as the startup screen works perfectly i question this.
    Please can you help!
    Thanks in advance,
    Alex.

I suggest you take it to an Apple store genius bar or a repair facility for evaluation.  This is most likely a hardware problem.
    Ciao.
