Ibook G4 screen remains dimmed

My iBook G4 screen remains dimmed as if it is about to go to sleep all the time, but in fact I am in the process of using it. Everything looks slightly darker than it is.

Hi again, try using the F2 button, it should make your screen brighter and the apple light on the back of your screen should light up too, then when your comp is inactive it will dim as usual, then when you use it it should go back to noraml brightness - or at least its worked for me! hope this is helpful

  • IBook G3 screen going dim?

    Hi,
My 12" iBook's screen has been misbehaving! This morning it flickered several times and went very dim to the point where i could only just see what was on the screen. I restarted, reset nvram etc but it was still the same. Later in the day it came back on but it only seems to be around half brightness although it occasionally goes as bright as it should it soon reverts back to dim. A quick google seems to point to the inverter board so i've picked one up off eBay, but i also notice there is a inverter lead, do i need to replace this as well?

    Hey Mark,
Not sure which iBook you have but look here for the takeapart.
    They're all pretty similar.

So if it just gets dim and you can see the video still most likely it's the inverter cable if not the inverter. If you move the display up and down and it flashes on and off then it's definitely the cable.
Check it particularly near the hinge point. You'll have to unwrap the metallic cloth like tape there. Check it carefully. Usually it shorts out or opens up. If it shorts badly it will take out a tiny SMT fuse on the logic board.

  • Screen remains dim after waking up on virtual terminals

I am having a strange issue when the display gets dim and won't get bright again, but only when I am no a vt.
I have an older (~4 yrs) Dell Studio 1737 with a Mobility Radeon inside with the xf86-video-ati driver:
    $ lspci | grep -i vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV635/M86 [Mobility Radeon HD 3650]
    $ pacman -Qq | grep xf86-video
    xf86-video-ati
    $ lsmod | grep radeon
    radeon 754282 2
    ttm 65132 1 radeon
    drm_kms_helper 35086 1 radeon
    drm 229990 4 ttm,drm_kms_helper,radeon
    i2c_algo_bit 5391 1 radeon
    i2c_core 22479 6 drm,i2c_i801,drm_kms_helper,i2c_algo_bit,radeon,videodev
When I leave my computer on one of the virtual consoles (vt2 - vt6) and it is idle for (I think) 10 minutes, it gets dim (via DPMS, I guess?) . However, I can't make it go bright again - after I move the mouse (which I am not sure makes any sense since I have no mouse in the vts) / press any key, nothing happens.
Now, the strange thing is, when the light is right, I can just see the text, but it is very, very dark and unreadable. Under normal circumstances I can see nothing and the screen can't be told apart form a blank black display. Actually, I had thought it was blank for a while until only recently, when I had the Sun shining against the display.
I wrote a simple script whose name is 'b':
    echo 10 | tee /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
and I left the console as root (!) for 10 minutes (!) and when the screen went dim I called 'b' and nothing happened. I have no other ideas about how deal with this one - I tried reading and looking around, and have pretty much nothing. Does this problem ring any bells? Does anybody know how this can be fixed (apart from "just don't leave it on the vt for longer than 10 mins" or similar ;d - these have occurred to me already). Of course, if you need any more information about my hardware, I will provide it.
I am running a constantly updated arch.

    From the news page here...

See if it's related to this...
It also seems to be related to later OSX versions, like 10.8.x & 10.9.x
The 2012 macs (and later apparently) (also later OSX versions on earlier Macs can do it also), not waking normally from sleep after hours being in sleep. (noted here ...

  • Unable to dismiss dialog when screen is dim

Using an iphone 4 with ios 7 installed, the power saving dim mode that is enabled after a period of no user input stops user interacting with dialog modals.
When I am using Clock -> Timer, and I set the timer for a duration long enough to cause the screen to dim, but not long enough to cause the iphone to go black, the dialog which pops up notifying me of my timer being finished can not be dismissed. When the dialog becomes active the screen remains dim and does not respond to any input, I have to return to my home screen and login to continue using my iphone.
Does anyone else have this problem/know of a solution?
Where am I able to submit this as a bug to apple?
    Cheers

Is this in Safari or Preview?
You really need to use the "AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin" for Safari which comes with the Adobe Reader installation. Then you'll be able to see PDF files in Safari just find. I would also select Adobe Reader as your default application for opening and viewing PDF files. Preview just does a bad job with some PDF files.
    Good luck,

  • Ibook starts up but screen is dim

I opened up my ibook yesterday and the screen was dim to the point where I could hardly see anything on my desktop. I thought I might've just hit some contrast or brightness buttons, but that wasn't it. Anybody know anything about this????

Does adjusting the angle of the display (a little forward or a little back) make a difference?
If so, the backlight cable may be pinched in the hinge. If that doesn't help, it could be that the inverter (backlight) cable is broken or the inverter board is bad.
You can read more about the problem in this Apple Discussions thread:

  • Does AppleCare cover my dimming iBook LCD screen?

    Hi - Simple question.
Does AppleCare cover my dimming iBook LCD screen? I've had the iBook less than two years, and the screen seems about 50% (maybe a little more) as bright as it was when I bought it.
Note, I also had to have the logic board replaced immediately after purchase, since it blew due to a heat issue. I understand the video module is on the logic board, too. I don't use it more than 1-5 hours, maybe two or three days a week, at a time (I have two other desktop Macs). The real, real problem is, it's my music workstation! Hard to edit notes in Logic Express when-I-can't-see-what-I'm-doing!
Any thoughts or answers? It's getting to be a real bummer not being able to use the iBook as a portable laptop in any brightly lit area.
Really, now. Sorry, I can't make the 10AM meeting, it's too bright in the meeting room with those overhead skylights... unless it's cloudy or raining...
    ~Robb

It certainly should! My iBook screen is as bright as ever--I got it in March of 2004 and none of the updates had any effect on the brightness. So your iBook screen should not be getting dim from normal wear and tear--there is something definitely wrong. If it's not due to a preference setting or something like that, be sure and take it in for diagnosis and repair before your warranty runs out.
    Good luck!

IPhone black screen does not show anything, but I can hear that the device works. I hear the lock open the screen and hear the iPod but the screen remains black!!

It's happened to me before as well. Try holding both lock(top right) and home buttons simultaneously until u see a slight flash of wight then just reboot it normally. If that doesn't work try restoring your device from itunes

  • Whenever i start my macbook pro the screen remains gray with the apple symbol and the circle timer below. The screen stays this way even if i leave it for hours.

When i turn on my macbook a box appears telling me i need to restart my computer (in different languages) and in order to do so i have to press on the off button for a lil while. Even after doing this the same box appears and it never restarts correctly. This box appears every single time. I rarely turn my computer off. I just place it on sleep mode and restarts it only when i get prompted to. I brought it to genius and they couldnt figure out what the problem is so i was told it needed to be shipped to get fixed. I didnt have anything backed up. All i want saved are the pictures because i went to 2 events where i was the assigned photographer and i didnt get to save it to an external memory. Genius said that when shipped i cant give instructions like make sure to save the pictures and if they are unable to, call me if they should go on with the process. I was wishful thinking that to fix the problem they might not even have to touch the pictures memory part. I brought my MBP back home hoping it will miraculously starts and id be able to back it up but now all it does when i turn it on is the screen remains gray with the apple symbol and the circle timer below. The screen stays this way even if i leave it on for hours. Please help me fix this!!! cant i really specify to the technicians at apple  to please make sure not to erase the pictures? Is there no other way to turn on my mac? I only need it to work ones.

  • Why does the HP screen remain on so long when I boot up my computer? (It started this recently.)

When I first bought my HP Pavillion P6000 Series computer (Model No. 6680t), running Windows 7 64-bit, it booted up quickly. Recently, after downloading HP updates, the HP screen remains on for several minutes before Windows boots up. My questions: What is the computer doing while the HP screen is on, and How can I get around this delayed boot-up?

    Hello,
I would like to strongly recommend that you update your version of Flash Player to our currently released version (17.0.0.169) and enable auto updates.  The version you are using is insecure and opening your computer (and all of your data) to being easily exploited by bad guys.
As for the error you are receiving, this is most likely a restriction from the website.  Each developer is able to specify what the required minimum version of Flash and require their users to have at least that version installed.  The detection that is occuring and the message that you are seeing on the website isn't part of Flash Player, but instead part of the website's code.
If you go to this page and click the "Check Now" button, what is displayed (OS, browser and version number)?  Do you see the "tree" animation playing below?

  • My macbook pro screen remains grey after latest firmware update

i just had the update notification for the latest firmware, proceeded to do so, and the screen remains grey, its been more than one hour and still grey, since its a firmware update i don't want to disturb it, but could it be that is taking so long?

Reboot it by pressing the power button down hard to force a shutdown.
If your still having problems, take it to Apple. I hope you have AppleCare becuase if they can't fix it, it's a new logicboard.

  • IPod Touch 2nd Gen (iOS 4.2.1) stops playing certain songs but screen remains.

    iPod Touch 2nd Gen 32GB
    iOS 4.2.1
    roughly 4.89 GB free
During playback, the Touch stops playing on certain specific songs, but the screen remains as is (that is, doesn't go back to menu or black).  I suspect "bad blocks/sectors" on the memory chip, but have no way of checking.  Pressing pause and then play again doesn't help.  Skipping back to previous song and then forward doesn't help.  Skipping forward does not work (next song doesn't play).  This affects only certain very specific and recently added songs.
I've tried Reseting (erasing all content) and Restoring from backup.  Problem still occurs.
Next step is to Reset (erase all content) and setup as a new ipod.  Then reload music content.  All content is AAC at 192kbps or lower.
    Anyone have any thoughts?

If the songs play OK in iTunes on the comnputer:
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Ipod touch screen is dimmed and won't brighten

i turned my ipod touch on one day and it was fine then the next thing i knew was the screen dimmed like it does before it goes into it's lock mode, but when i push the menu or power button the screen stays dimmed and i have tried several things to brighten the screen but nothing works. can anyone help me with this problem because i can't use my ipod touch anymore now?

    - Double tap the screen with three fingers and go to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn off Zoom and Voice over too if you want.
    - Alternately, you can connect to your syncing computer and go to the Summary pane.  Click on Configure Universal Acess and turn off Zoom and Voice Over (if you wish).

  • My MacBook Pro will not start up.  I only get a grey screen with the spinning wheel.  No blue page appears and the grey screen remains.  Tried starting with the Shift key but ineffective as well.

Can't get my MacBook Pro to start up.  Have shut it down several times and tried restarting but all I get is a grey screen with the spinning icon.  Apple Support online suggested starting with power button followed immediately with the shift key.  Same results.  Also tried power button with shift key, command, and V.  Black screen appeared instead with lots of data language but still no starting.  This final page was suppose to result in an internal system check and restart but nothing happened and the black screen remains.Where do I go from here?  Scheduled for the Genius Bar tomorrow but would like to resolve this beforehand.

You may be having a hardware problem that you cannot resolve on your own. Nevertheless...
...hold down the command and R keys whilst booting to try to get to your Recovery partition. If you can, use Disk Utility to try to Verify your boot drive (usually named "Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). If the verification fails, try to repair your hard drive. If everything appears to be OK, restart.
If you can't get into your Recovery partition, your problem is likely hardware related. If so, keep your appointment and see what the Apple techs have to say.

  • Windows 8.1 Update Causes Lost Brightness Settings / Screen is Dim

I updated from Windows 8 to 8.1 and the next day my screen went dim and I could not adjust it neither with the keyboard +/-, nor with the onscreen graphics dashboard, nor within the power settings.
    How do you fix it?

Sometimes Windows updates will break your graphics driver. That is because Intel and NVidia do not update their graphics drivers on the same schedule that Microsoft
updates Windows, and sometimes the updates are incompatible and cause the graphics driver to do wonky things. In my case that came in the form of lost brightness settings.
I searched these forums for a fix and I could not find one, so now that I know the answer, I am sharing it here.
How do you fix it? You have to reinstall the graphics driver. This is how I did it.
I found the graphics driver install file that was already on my computer and I ran it. It reinstalled the driver in about 5 seconds and my screen brightness functionality was restored.
Where is my graphics driver install file? On my computer it is here:
    D:driversVGAIntelx649.17.10.2932\Setup.exe
Yours is probably in a different but similar location depending on how it was installed and what brand it is, etc. I have a Lenovo
P400 touchscreen laptop with an Intel HD 4000 Graphics.

  • Dark screen remains after waking from sleep mode

Whilst using Safari Version 3.1.2, Mac OS 10.4.11 on my Powerbook G4 (aluminum, 1.5 ghz), my screen remains dark upon waking from sleep mode. Trying to increase screen brightness is ineffectual for some reason likely related to this problem. My only workaround is to force shutdown and restart. Any ideas about a solution would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Gary,
This behavior is not a Safari issue but system related.
Close all applications an run in utilities> disc repair permissions.
After you done reboot an see what happens when your Mac gets to sleep mode again. This time don't open any applications to test it. Just leave it showing your desktop.
Post back with the results ...
