IBook G4 Shuts Down Before Battery Is Gone

Recently, I have had this problem with my iBook. I charge it to 100%, disconnect the power adapter and take the laptop somewhere else, and use the computer. However, the computer automatically shuts off anywhere between 20% and 50% power left, according to the icon in the top right corner. I know that the battery won't last as long as my computer ages (I've had it for 2 years, I think), but I at least expect it to reach below 10% or give me the warning before shutting off. Also, unlike some other users with a similar problem, my laptop's clock is fine once I start it again (after connecting it to the charging cable) and can sometimes recover documents, etc.

Arggh! I too have this same problem.
Once it hits around 60%, the iBook goes directly to sleep and can't "resume" until i plug the power cable in. What's frustrating is that it gives no warning on what it's going to do! I even downloaded Coconut Battery and actually watched it die!
So I put the battery to the test and I set my battery preferences to NEVER turn off hard disk, NEVER go to sleep, and NEVER use the screen saver. I also adjusted my screen brightness to the highest level to see how long this battery would last. I waited for a full charge and then unplugged it.
Here's how it turned out:
At exactly 70%, I went back on to test it out by opening a program, then BAM! It goes into the dreaded sleep mode! Before it went to sleep, I checked the MAH levels from CoconutBattery and it said I still had about 2245mAh out of 3404mAh. Another thing shocking is that the Battery-Loadcycles is pretty low at 138 compared to some of the people above. BUT - when I plug in the power adapter to get it out of sleep mode, CoconutBattery AND the battery level in the top main bar all of a sudden show 0 battery left and 0mAh.
WTH can the problem be? I am about to buy a new battery just to test it out (eBay - those 4400 mAh batteries).
Here's my log:

  • Ibook g4 shutting down and battery problems

A couple months ago, just a couple weeks after my warranty coverage ended..., my ibook started having problems. It would go to sleep randomly and shut down randomly. I tried resetting the PMU, that did nothing to fix the problem. I would have to unplug the charger and take out the battery for a few minutes in order to get my computer to start back up. This problem got worse over the next couple weeks and would shut down several times a day.
I started to realize that when i had my computer in my lap or not on a hard stable surface or i moved it, it shut down more often. So i treated my laptop as a desktop and left it on my desk and never moved it. This decreased the random shutting down to twice a week instead of several times daily.
Now a new problem has arised and i'm not sure if its related to this. In the last 24 hours my computer has not been able to charge correctly or hold a charge. Its hooked up to the power cord right now and its not turning on or charging. I was able to get it to charge a little like 3% about 3 hours ago, but now nothing.
At this point i'm over ibooks and apple but i still want to know what the problem is and if its fixable. is this something i can fix myself? any suggestions? i'm not willing to pay more than $200 to fix this stupid thing... Thanks!

Yeah I have the exact same thing happening to me right now. Last model ibook G4, it sits on my desk all day and is ok w/o movement, but at home will randomly tell me I must shut it down, more often if I move it. Its still under warranty, so i'm gonna take it in and see what they do to it....

  • My iPhone 4S keeps shutting down before battery is low

Why does my iPhone 4S keep shutting down when it shows I still have 30% battery or more still available?   For example...my last phone started shutting down at 30% and by the time I took it to the store a couple weeks later, it was shutting down at 88% (they saw it for themselves, ran diagnostics, and came up with no issues).  Getting a new phone every 3 weeks is not ideal.  I'm on my 2nd replacement phone in 2 months and it started back up yet again-shut down at 31% a couple days ago.  I charge the phone to 100% and it never fails, it shuts down at a higher percentage each day (it shut down at 35% today).  I have done everything Apple Support has suggested with no luck (including full restore).  Is anyone else having this problem?  Any suggestions?

    Hi,
I simply use the phone until I have only a little charge left. Once that's reached I'll simply let phone idle completely or drain the rest with lightweight use. We have big difference here as I can actually reach 1% rather than phone dying at 20++ percentages. Previous said, e.g yesterday phone just died after some use with 12% battery left and started again when bringing indoors. I was then able to drain the battery from 12% -> 1% before it eventually died completely. After this I couldn't start the phone anymore instead getting the charge icon constantly, so I just plugged it in at that point. After charging over night I would then consider the battery charge meter calibrated.
In your case you could test if you can still start the phone at 47%. Even if it's displaying only charge icon you could try to hold the sleep/power button longer and/or do reset with holding home+sleep/power button a few seconds. If it indeed doesn't start it would indicate battery truly is empty. It it does.. then you could try to continue using the phone hopefully hitting lower battery levels and eventually try to fully recharge it in case you'll see the battery charge percentage working any different.
Below picture shows I can still reach the  "0%" battery level and also pretty good usage times.. so the problem with me really is just that the stupid phone doesn't like cool temperatures (possibly after iOS6 upgrade)

  • Ibook G4 shuts down unexpectedly and resets time and date

More and more frequently my iBook will shut down completely unexpectedly when not plugged in. This happens regardless of how much battery life it has or it claims to have (80%, 40%, 20%, 12%). It will not start up again from battery only. When I plug the computer and restart it, it has reset time and date to Wed March 31 1969, 19.31 pm. It alerts me that the time is set to before 2001 and this may lead applications to behave erratically.
Is this normal? Why is this happening?
I have a few months left of my APP, but that doesn't cover battery related problems, right?

Hi astaver and welcome to Apple Discussions.
If you are still using the original battery from a nearly 3 yrs old iBook then it is almost certain that the battery has reached the end of its useful life. The symptoms you describe more or less confirm this.
To check on battery health go to the Apple Menu>About this Mac>More Info>Power>Battery and copy/paste the info into a reply.
You can also download and install Coconut Battery which gives a GUI to the same info.
You are right in assuming that Applecare doesn't cover you for a dead battery of this age but you might like to see if you qualify under the iBook & PowerBook G4 - Battery Exchange Program.
    Good luck,
    Adrian

  • Adjusting automatic shut-down on battery?

Before installing Mountain Lion this summer, I used to have a slider or some way of controlling when my Macbook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) shut down on battery power. I was able to set it for 10% battery life or whatever, and go through a full discharge cycle. There were also warning pop-up alerts, letting me know when I was in critical time zone with battery life, and I think there was even a message like "you have 15 minutes of battery power left."
Now with ML and the last two updates, my battery reaches about 30% battery life and poof! everything goes black. No warning. No pop-up alert. Just a black screen.
I've searched Apple, the support forums and the web for a fix and the closest thing I find is info about UPS and uninterrupted power. I'm sure there is an easy way to adjust this in system preferences but I can't seem to find it. This is what my energy saving options are:
It's bad enough ML has reduced my battery power in half (I'm down to about 2.5 - 3 hours when I used to often get more than 4.5 - 5 hours), but this automatic everything-goes-black shutdown when I have 30% battery life is making me want to throw my laptop out the window. (And don't even get me started on the Spotlight indexing problems I'm having again with the 10.8.2 update... I've tried multiple things with that and am delaying the pain of having to reinstall ML for the third time since it came out this summer). FWIW, I have 290 battery cycles, but until ML I didn't have any sort of battery life issues.
Can you point me some direction? Thank you!

    I'm having the opposite problem...
I leave it playing music in my speaker dock, and it shuts off on its own after about 1/2 hour even though I'm still listening.
I have not been able to find any controls for controlling or disabling the auto-sleep.
Please let me know if you find anything related to this

  • My macbook pro (late 2008) shuts down but battery is at 25-30%

My macbook pro (late 2008) shuts down but battery is at 25-30% and I don't get a low power warning box before this happens.  This only happens when the power chord is not connected, and it restarts with no problems once I put the power chord in. Does this mean I need a new battery, or is it an indication of something else? Using osx 10.5.8

Mine is Unibody 15" MBP late 2008, with the exact problem as yours. It can be a sudden shut down at 25-32%, or, after upgrading to OS 10.7.2, can be hang all of sudden on battery power.
Condition on, "Replace Soon". From 4.5 - 6 hours when new, goes down to 1 - 2 hours on discrete graphics.
But after 'abusing' it for the first year in the heat of Jakarta's climate in a non AC room when doing a video editing, before moving back to a comfort AC room at home sweet home, the battery performance is still top notch comparing to other kind than Apple. Also, it caused me to replace the right fan, after a lot of hard work on that first year. Oh, and by the way, I regularly done the battery calibration, at least once or twice between 3-6 months.

  • Ibook G4 shuts down for no reason

hi can anyone help me with a problem thats just started to happen with my ibook or maybe its happened to someone else and they have a solution. the problem i'm having is that my ibook just shuts down for no reason esp. when i'm online and won't start up again unless i remove the battery leave it out for a few seconds then put it back in and it press the on button. i have kept my software up to date and as soon as a new update is available its downloaded and installed on the computer and i also have intego security software on my mac, so this is why i'm a little confused if my software is up to date and i have my security software protecting my mac why is it shutting down i have ran virus scan after virus scan but it comes up clean every time, is my mac on the way out (its only 2 years old) or is there something i'm missing or not doing. i would be very thankful if anyone can help me with this because although there is plenty of shiny new macbooks out there i kinda like my ibook and i don't want to let it go with a fight. thanks again

    hi john
quick question is it possible for my ibook to reset its pmu itself, i looked up the effects of resetting the pmu on the apple site and one of the things it says will happen when the pmu is reset is that, "After the reset, on some iBooks and PowerBooks, the system clock is set to 00:00 (GMT), 01 Jan 1970 for computers with Mac OS X" , its just that when my ibook shuts down an i manage to start it back up the clock is set to 00:00 (gmt) 01 jan 1970 so does that mean its resetting itself or is the date going back to then because i take the battery out. thanks for your help so far

    thank you, movie lady

The iBook does not have a backup (PRAM) battery. It only has the main battery and a small capacitor which maintains the settings long enough to do a battery swap. If the battery is dead, what you are seeing can happen.
If the battery is not a problem (or even if it is), you could try resetting the PMU and see if that helps.

  • Why does my iphone 3gs shut down when battery gets to 80%?  have installed new battery and nothing changes?

Why does my iphone 3gs shut down when battery shows 80%.  a couple of months ago is shut down at 60% but has continually gotten worse.  this was before 5.0.  i took it to a repair man and he tried a used battery, a new battery, and the original battery.  nothing helped.  5.01 didnt help either.  What is my problem?

Fully discharge the battery (till it shuts down and won't turn on) and then fully recharge it (100%).  This will recalibrate the battery meter.  You may need to do this a few times.

  • IBook G4 shutting down

My iBook is shutting down all the time and now it won't even start up. I replaced the battery a month ago and it worked fine for awhile. To send it in is going to cost me $325. Is it worth it? What happens when you run it without the battery installed? I have read the posts and am totally confused...just tell me what to do, please. thanks

Hi HIwan... You may want to re-post in the iBook G4 forum. Although there are lots of long time Mac users here... many of whom probably had an iBook G4, this is a MacBook forum. The hardware between the two is completely different (they don't have so much as a single component in common). The folks over in the iBook G4 forum would probably be able to assist you more quickly:

So, you can't Install OSX to the external?
Or you can't boot from it when you do?
You're not the only one wondering... I'm reminded of the Goose that laid the Golden Egg story.

  • Application shuts down before it has started

I have a problem with logic on my macbook. When I start it I get a warning sign that says that the application shut down unexpected ( I don't know exactly what the warning sign says in English since it's on Swedish on my compute ).
The things I've done so far is:
    * Repaired the disk and the disk authorities (once again, don't know if that's what it's called in English)
    * I used AppDelete to throw away Logic and then I installed it again, and I still get the same message, that it shuts down before it even opened.
Does anyone know what to do? Please help me!

There are special Apple Discussion forums for Logic Studio and Logic Pro 8. Are you referring to one of these?
Has it worked before or is this the first time you have tried using it?

If Jim's suggestion doesn't work, and Logic still crashes, copy and paste the crash log into a new message here.
If you don't know how, open "Console" in your utilities folder. Click the 'Logs' icon. You'll see an item under ~/Library/Logs named 'CrashReporter' and you'll find the "Logic Pro crash.log'
Find the beginning of the latest log (they're dated) and copy and paste the complete log for that date into your message. Sometimes (but not always) there's a clue in there about a bad plug-in, or a failed attempt to load a particular resource, which might help us suggest a solution.

  • My PSE elements 7.0 on Vista shuts down before loading thumbnails.

I get the Windows error sign that then shuts the organizer down. The thumbnail spinner having stopped working.
I have repaired the catalog, optimized it and reindexed and repaired again.
I have deleted PSA and status.dat
    I have deleted thumbnail cache
I have uninstalled and reinstalled PSE.
    I have created anew catalogue
I have imported pictures to the new catalogue successfully.
The thumbnails were created. I worked on this catalogue for about one hour. Exited. When I reloaded PSE the same fault occurred immediately.
Windows picture viewer and Photo Gallery work fine with all my catalogue.
The fault module name is EZdH264DecTFilter.dll
    What should I try next??

Thanks for the advice. I do suspect the problem is something to do with
video files. But turning of the Active File Monitor sadly has not  fixed the
