IBook G4 shutting down

My iBook is shutting down all the time and now it won't even start up. I replaced the battery a month ago and it worked fine for awhile. To send it in is going to cost me $325. Is it worth it? What happens when you run it without the battery installed? I have read the posts and am totally confused...just tell me what to do, please. thanks

Hi HIwan... You may want to re-post in the iBook G4 forum. Although there are lots of long time Mac users here... many of whom probably had an iBook G4, this is a MacBook forum. The hardware between the two is completely different (they don't have so much as a single component in common). The folks over in the iBook G4 forum would probably be able to assist you more quickly:

  • Ibook G4 shuts down unexpectedly and resets time and date

More and more frequently my iBook will shut down completely unexpectedly when not plugged in. This happens regardless of how much battery life it has or it claims to have (80%, 40%, 20%, 12%). It will not start up again from battery only. When I plug the computer and restart it, it has reset time and date to Wed March 31 1969, 19.31 pm. It alerts me that the time is set to before 2001 and this may lead applications to behave erratically.
Is this normal? Why is this happening?
I have a few months left of my APP, but that doesn't cover battery related problems, right?

Hi astaver and welcome to Apple Discussions.
If you are still using the original battery from a nearly 3 yrs old iBook then it is almost certain that the battery has reached the end of its useful life. The symptoms you describe more or less confirm this.
To check on battery health go to the Apple Menu>About this Mac>More Info>Power>Battery and copy/paste the info into a reply.
You can also download and install Coconut Battery which gives a GUI to the same info.
You are right in assuming that Applecare doesn't cover you for a dead battery of this age but you might like to see if you qualify under the iBook & PowerBook G4 - Battery Exchange Program.
    Good luck,
    Adrian

  • Ibook G4 shuts down for no reason

hi can anyone help me with a problem thats just started to happen with my ibook or maybe its happened to someone else and they have a solution. the problem i'm having is that my ibook just shuts down for no reason esp. when i'm online and won't start up again unless i remove the battery leave it out for a few seconds then put it back in and it press the on button. i have kept my software up to date and as soon as a new update is available its downloaded and installed on the computer and i also have intego security software on my mac, so this is why i'm a little confused if my software is up to date and i have my security software protecting my mac why is it shutting down i have ran virus scan after virus scan but it comes up clean every time, is my mac on the way out (its only 2 years old) or is there something i'm missing or not doing. i would be very thankful if anyone can help me with this because although there is plenty of shiny new macbooks out there i kinda like my ibook and i don't want to let it go with a fight. thanks again

    hi john
quick question is it possible for my ibook to reset its pmu itself, i looked up the effects of resetting the pmu on the apple site and one of the things it says will happen when the pmu is reset is that, "After the reset, on some iBooks and PowerBooks, the system clock is set to 00:00 (GMT), 01 Jan 1970 for computers with Mac OS X" , its just that when my ibook shuts down an i manage to start it back up the clock is set to 00:00 (gmt) 01 jan 1970 so does that mean its resetting itself or is the date going back to then because i take the battery out. thanks for your help so far

The iBook does not have a backup (PRAM) battery. It only has the main battery and a small capacitor which maintains the settings long enough to do a battery swap. If the battery is dead, what you are seeing can happen.
If the battery is not a problem (or even if it is), you could try resetting the PMU and see if that helps.

  • IBook App shuts down when trying to change the font size

    Hope sb can help
when I open a book/pdf, the font size is very large. When I try to make them smaller  (menu), the iBook App just shuts down.
I tried a hard reset of the iPad ... still the same problem. Did sb experience the same problem? Tx!

This happens only because ios 6.It has bugs. You try to restore and if it did not work just try to downgrade it to ios 5.1.1

  • Ibook G3 shuts down when power cord is inserted.

I have a 800mhz G3 12" and when I plug in the power adapter when it is running it immediately shuts down and will not bootup until I unplug the power adapter. I have tried two diffent adapters with the same results.

You may have to consider having the computer checked to see if
the DC-in circuit is working properly; could be that is where things
are going wrong. If you had a spare battery and an external
charger (such as some companies offer for their iBook replace-
ment batteries) you could run it for some time before needing to
    do some repair, maybe.
For out of warranty repairs, you can check with Tech Restore, PB Restore
and other named companies who offer authorized/certified repairs online. I
had good service and was able to contact wegenermedia about my iBook
repairs before and after the service, which was very satisfactory.
PS: And one assumes there was a reliable power supply on the
AC adapter's power-in; and the adapter has a proper voltage out.

  • New upgrade messed up iBooks - keeps shutting down & how do I get to the store now

Since new IOS, my iBooks shuts down while I am reading and when I get it back up, it is on page where I started and not page I was on when it shut down.  Also, the store link in upper left hand corner never shows up now.  Anyone know what problem is??

You reinstalled an old version of iPhoto after you updated your library to the newer version.
Update ALL your software and try again.
Click the Apple Menu at the upper left-hand corner of your screen and select "Software Update..."
Repeat until it tells you there are no more updates.
AND, launch the App Store application located in your Applications folder to see if there are any updates there as well.

  • Ibook randomly shutting down...

    Hello all,
I have been experiencing a problem of my computer just shutting down at random times. This problem is not in conjunction with any other problems like freeziing or anything like that. I do not think it is a loose battery because it just shut down on me a few minutes ago sitting quite still on my desk. Any thoughts or ways to fix the random shut downs?

Could the iBook be overheating? There is a freeware item (think it's available
as a widget for 10.4.x and also as an app for 10.3.9) you can get to see the
processor (bottomside sensor) and battery temperature; but not cpu temps.
I have something like that in my iBookG4, and a different something in my
    iMacG4 in 10.3.9 = "Temperature Monitor Lite."
Some checking around and I see some users had a few different issues
and of them some had logicboard problems. Have you tried the Apple
Hardware Test? It boots the computer and runs apart from the OSX.
And there also is a similar link (by name, sort of) in this forum which also
has some information that may apply to your situation. Best of luck!
PS: If you have installed additional RAM in the user accessed
slot, check to see if it is loose. Also, reset/zap the PRAM. [If the
machine is running hot, the fan should be on; if not, maybe it's
something else... But it is something, for sure.]

  • New iBook G4 - shuts down w/o power adapter

I helped set up a brand new G4 iBook for a friend (10.4) purchased today. When the power adapter is unplugged the computer immediately shuts down. The battery indicator shows 100% charge. What are the proper steps to diagnos/fix the problem? Or should they return it?

I would take it back. It could be that something as simple as resetting the PMU will take care of it. If that doesn't do it, this symptom could be a logic board problem (it was with mine).
Let Apple figure it out and/or have them replace it.
By the way, the iBook G4 Discussions can be found here. (This is the iBook G3 dual USB discussion area.)

  • IBook G3 shuts down when plugged in?

    Hi,
My G3 600mhz iBook G3 has startede shutting down as soon as i plug the power supply/charger in forcing a restart.
The only other thing (if it's related) is that the front case latch no longer works.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi,
Yes i tried that to, also no joy.
I'm stummped with this one, looks like some kind of power management issue cos the sleep light no longer glows either.

  • Ibook g4 shutting down and battery problems

A couple months ago, just a couple weeks after my warranty coverage ended..., my ibook started having problems. It would go to sleep randomly and shut down randomly. I tried resetting the PMU, that did nothing to fix the problem. I would have to unplug the charger and take out the battery for a few minutes in order to get my computer to start back up. This problem got worse over the next couple weeks and would shut down several times a day.
I started to realize that when i had my computer in my lap or not on a hard stable surface or i moved it, it shut down more often. So i treated my laptop as a desktop and left it on my desk and never moved it. This decreased the random shutting down to twice a week instead of several times daily.
Now a new problem has arised and i'm not sure if its related to this. In the last 24 hours my computer has not been able to charge correctly or hold a charge. Its hooked up to the power cord right now and its not turning on or charging. I was able to get it to charge a little like 3% about 3 hours ago, but now nothing.
At this point i'm over ibooks and apple but i still want to know what the problem is and if its fixable. is this something i can fix myself? any suggestions? i'm not willing to pay more than $200 to fix this stupid thing... Thanks!

Yeah I have the exact same thing happening to me right now. Last model ibook G4, it sits on my desk all day and is ok w/o movement, but at home will randomly tell me I must shut it down, more often if I move it. Its still under warranty, so i'm gonna take it in and see what they do to it....

  • IBooks keeps shutting down, and............

Since downloading iOS8 on my iPad 2 my iBooks App is a mess.  Shuts down every few minutes and when I reopen it it goes to a page I read long ago or to the end of the previous book I read.  Facebook freezes frequently, and iCloud is totally messed up.  Is there a fix for iPad 2 users in the works???  I truly hope so.  My iPad is almost too frustrating to use.

    Hello there, Katsusbo.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great steps to try when applications are not working as expected:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3281
If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected,  restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on),  reset your device.
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more about restoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • Ibook randomly shuts down

Over the last few weeks I have noticed my ibook G4 randomly shutting down - even if fully or partially charged. And sometimes it takes a few goes to restart.
Also the charge indicator on the power cable doesn't keep its colour and has trouble charging sometimes.
I have already had the login board replaced, and I am unsure what has changed that is causing this.
Does anyone have any ideas? Does anyone know of a system monitoring applications I can download or something to help establish the cause?
    Thanks

    Jess,
I'd recommend that you give Apple a call or take it back to the store where you bought it to get that problem worked out. It could be a variety of things, but it's most likely a hardware problem. You could have a defective iBook.

  • IBook G4 Shutting Down Unexpectedly

I have never had a problem like this before, but my iBook has gotten to the point where it will shut down with no warning when it isn't hooked up to the battery.
I used to get a "Low Battery" warning and then my computer would go to sleep. I could then hook it up to the battery and it would come right back on. Now, the battery isn't even low... I get no warning, and my computer shuts down completely. After I plug it into the battery I have to then restart the computer.
What can I do to fix this?

    Hi,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Resetting the PMU may help. Do that by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Wait 5 seconds and start the iBook. If the battery is more than 2 years old though it probably needs to be replaced and resetting the PMU will have no effect.

  • Ibook suddenly shuts down

    hi,
i really hope this question hasn't been asked a thousand times before: when i lift up my ibook grabbing it at the front right corner (where the battery is), it shuts down quite often. i don't have any clue, why it does so... does anyone of you?
    thanks.
    mia

I seem to have this exact problem. My iBook is only a couple months old but is nearly unusable away from its power adapter.
    - The crashes happen only when on battery power and the computer is moved
    - The right front seems to be the area causing most of the trouble
    - It has never crashed while on battery power and on a desk
    - The crash is instant and exactly if the battery was suddenly removed
    - There is no freeze or warning
    - There has never been a message relating to this on restart
    - Crashes can occur at any time - from the boot screen on
    - The crashes happen at any charge level
After many trips to the local Apple store (The Woodlands, TX) I have given up on them. Most of the time they claim it is a software issue. Even though: it has crashed at least 100 times on me without the power adapter and never with the adapter etc. Of course even though I can get it to crash on cue at home, it never seems to want to crash while at the store.
On my last trip they installed some old spacers (left over from some very old Powerbooks apparently) to get the battery to seat better. These have failed to fix the problem. Even worse than that, after they jammed the battery and spacers back in, my mouse button is all wonky. Almost the entire right side is "unclickable" while the left side is too soft. and if you click hard enough on the right side of the button, there is a good chance it will crash. Some basic prodding around under the button with the battery removed has failed to return the button to its previous state.
I am nearly at the end of my rope here. Not only is my nearly new iBook useless away from my desk and my mouse button dreadfully wonky but my "friendly" geniuses give me the runaround. I am sick of dealing with the same uninterested people that refuse to believe maybe the battery just won't seat right and turn me away with very faulty diagnoses.
