Ibook G4 superdrive making "eject" sound

This is strange. The superdrive on my ibook G4 is making a sound like it's ejecting a disc randomly. There will be no disc in the drive and it will make this sound (it feels like it's actually trying to push a disc out too).
I have my apple care protection plan, should I send it in, and what do I tell them.
Thanks,
Shannon

Sounds like a faulty drive.
Possbiilities:
You clear the PRAM/NVRAM (holding down the P R option and apple keys during the start-up, allowing for 4 chimes before releasing the keys.
You can also try to reset the PMU - Power Management.
While neither of the above pertains specifically to the drive, there may be other anomalies going on somehow affecting the drive. It's at least worth a try.
Otherwise, a certified tech examining the machine sounds like your next step.

  • Macbook display black & making ejection sound

Hi! After my macbook was asleep all day I just opened it up to work and the screen is black and seems as if it won't wake up. The led light is on and steady not blinking. When I force quit the book the light goes out and when I turn it on the light goes back on. So maybe the display isn't working. It sounds like something is working when the light is on. Also I noticed over the past few days that it would make a sound like it was trying to eject a disk indiscriminately while I was using it. It made that same sound tonight when I tried to reboot it. Has anyone else had these problems? HELP!
I plan to try to take it into a mac store this week. Thanks for any insight!

the ejecting sound is when you bring it back from sleep. but its not stopping sleeping in this case.

  • Optical drive constantly making ejecting sounds when drive is empty

the disc drive on my iMac randomly tries to eject a disc for a minute or more at a time when the drive is empty....any ideas why this is??

Hmmm, I think I'd try this...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. (Thinking maybe iTunes helper here).
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • IBook G4 Superdrive won't read any discs

Few days ago my iBook's Superdrive worked perfectly and I never had any issues. I would barely use my drive and I never used any dirty or scratched discs in order to avoid issues, anyway, today I found some burned music discs in my room and I was curious to know what songs they had, but then when I inserted the disc it just kept loading and loading until it ejected by itself, I then checked again if it was scratched and it wasn't, I tried another disc and no luck, I restarted the computer and the usual noise that the drive makes when the computer starts changed and sounds kind of rough like its forced, it did't sound like that before I inserted the CD. What could the problem be? Why would the superdrive die if I rarely used it? Also, the system profile detects the drive but the disk utility won't show the drive. Any ideas? I really don't want to change the drive.

If your SuperDrive will not mount the install disk or commercially recorded CDs it would seem the drive is not functioning well and may be on the way out. With the older tray-loading drives it was easy to access the inside of the drive and clean the laser with a alcohol towelette. With the internal drives that is more of a challenge and you not only have to remove the drive but to open it up, and even after that the issue may not necessarily be the laser.
Possible options are: a replacement SuperDrive, an external firewire drive or using Firewire Target Disk Mode with the assistance of a second firewire capable Mac.

  • Disk eject sound every 30 seconds

For the past 3 weeks, my iMac is making the 'disk eject' sound every 30 seconds. It's maddening. It persists whenever the machine is not asleep and in both user modes. Any thoughts?

If it's a click click, it may well be the sound of a dying hard drive. Back up all your data to a firewire external as soon as you can, I use SuperDuper! to make a bootable clone.

  • MacBook making crazy sounds

My MacBook is making a sound that is freaking me out. This always happens when its closed. It sounds like one of the following:
    1. Like its trying to eject a CD (when there isn't one in there)
    or
    2. The same sound it makes when you open it, but when it's closed.
    Help!

What is SMC and/or PRAM? I'm really a dummy when it comes to tech stuff that's not everyday stuff.
The SMC (System Management Controller) controls some power functions and some sleep functions. It is explained better in the link for SMC reset. PRAM (Parameter Random Access Memory) is better explained by the following link. Mac OS X: What's stored in PRAM? Then you can reset it following the link I provided for PRAM reset.

  • MacBook drive keeps making eject noises

    Hi
A key fell off my macbook earlier this week so I took it in to get it fixed. I got it back and the superdrive doesn't work.. it just makes eject sounds and buzzes like trying to read a disk...
If I try to put in a disk it feels like there is one inside, but if i put it in while it makes the eject noise, it goes in and is readable but makes noise like something is touching the disk..
Anything I can do to fix it? Thanks.. this is beginning to look like the rev a MBP I had

Lets just say I opened it and there was an extra clip (the ones on the right side beside the superdrive that hold the case on i think) ontop of the drive putting pressure on it and taking that out lets the disks get in fine
    No I never damaged it

  • Optical Drive making horrible sounds upon boot!

I have a black Macbook, and my Optical Drive is making horrible sounds when I boot. Now, I'm not sure if it's the Optical Drive or the HDD, but it's coming from the upper right-hand corner.
If this helps, I dropped it earlier today and I could have damaged it. I know the difference between the way it normally sounds when it boots and this. This kind of sounds like when you're inserting a CD into the Optical Drive, but far worse? The sound also happens when you press the Eject button.
Please help me, I need to know if I should bring it into an Apple Store immediately.

I have a mcabook 13 inch (white, not black LOL) that does the same thing. It was used by a guy at my work (it is a work laptop) and when he returned it to me (I am the IT guy) it wouldnt boot up. Warranty fixed this, but the grind is still there. This is the same guy who destroyed the screen on his PC laptop by dropping it down some stairs. So no doubt he has dropped this mac, which I have decided will stay in my personal care
Have you had any info on the issue?

  • My iphone 4 started making a sound like "boing" with a vibration/ wobbly sound.  It does it at least once a day.  I've reset my phone, used icloud to restore, and it made the sound again upon startup.  Help!  This is so annoying.

My iphone 4 started making a sound like a "boing" with a vibration/ wobbly sound.  It does this at least once a day.  It started about a month ago.  Anyone got any ideas?

Mine does this also, seemingly randomly several times throughout the day.  I do not have this sound as any of my alerts and it does not seem to denote anything like a message, reminder, etc.  I do have "Trapster" on my phone and I went in and tweaked the settings there.  Will repost if that has any efect.

  • IMac hard drive making clicking sound (audio sample)

A couple of nights ago I realized my five year old iMac was making a sound I have never heard it make before. It is a scratching noise that I assume is coming from my internal hard drive (hard drive is stock, has never been replaced). It isn't a super loud noise, but it sounds like the noise some hard drives make when they are "searching" or "thinking". I'm wondering if my hard drive is beginning to fail, or if the problem could be something as simple as dust or dirt caught in the drive. An audio sample is in the link below, please help me diagnose my problem. Thanks!

When you ran SMART Utility, were any of the sensors out of range or close to it, although not enough to trip the health measure? Just wondering. I once replaced an older hard drive that was showing error rates above normal, even when the drive was still 'verified'.
Other than that, you've run several tests that would say the hardware is OK.  As GeekStacy said, new hard drive noises are typically not good. So I'd be sure you have a good backup regimen, and if the noises get yet louder or more noticeable, you can either run these various tests again or replace the hard drive.

  • Odd behavior: empty optical drive makes eject sound with lid closed

Anyone heard of this? I've got a black MacBook (2.0Ghz) w/ Leopard. Laptop is plugged into outlet with lid closed & no disk in the optical drive. Every 2 minutes or so I can hear the eject sound like when you push the eject button.
    Any clues or suggestions?

I have had this problem for a couple of months. I took it into to be looked at by someone at the Apple store and they couldn't replicate the problem. It happens continuously now and drives me crazy. I took a video of it and posted it on youtube. Take a look and tell me if this is what you are experiencing, or if you have any ideas on what is happening or how to stop it. I plan on taking it to the Apple store this weekend if it is still doing this (which I am sure it is)

  • IPad is not making any sound

iPad is not making any sound when typing, watching video from YouTube and video from cameroll. I don't even hear when I receive notification. My mom and dad has the same problem on their iPhone 4s. My mom when to apple store to replace for a new phone but do I have to go to the apple store to replace it too? I also tried a restore but it did not work. Please answer!
    Thank you

    DISCONNECT BLUETOOTH.
After doing all the ridiculous resetting and changing/checking the settings by the advice given on these forums and on YouTube, I finally discovered that if you have your apple device connected to any other device by bluetooth you will not get any audio but by the device it's connected to. How un-awesome is that? Ive always been used to how my android devices work with Bluetooth which is when the system you're connected to is off or in a different mode, you still have audio. That makes perfect sense and is convenient, right? But I thought my brand new ipad was busted when I connected to my entertainment system by Bluetooth and haven't been getting any audio the last few weeks. So basically I need to go into settings every stinking time if I want to hear my game or show my wife a YouTube video. Regretting ever got this overpriced tablet...

  • IPad is not making any sounds except for itunes, Pandora and Netflix. Need help.

From one day to another the iPad is not making any sounds (lock, keyboard, games) except for music on iTunes, Pandora and video on Netflix. All sounds are activated on the iPad's general settings. I have synced it and updated the OS to no avail. Any help or suggestions is gratly appreciated.

If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.
