Ibook g4....Sure does growl at me and refuses to boot up

I have has this Ibook for a few years now, and I would really hate to have to junk it. For some reason it has decided that it no longer wants to start up.
I do get the initial chime when turning the system on, but after that I hear a very noisy growl and get to stare at a perfectly blank screen... help

Hey Applegirl and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
I do get the initial chime when turning the system on, but after that I hear a very noisy growl and get to stare at a perfectly blank screen... help
That could be the hard drive is going bad and needs to be replaced. Is the noise coming from the lower left? That's where the hard drive is.
I would really hate to have to junk it.
Well whatever happens don't do that. I repair these and donate them to teachers in the inner city. I'm in Chicago.

  • Laptop (ideapad z500 touch) crashes and refuses to boot, needing to be booted from USB

    Hi,
Basically, my girlfriend's laptop has been acting up for a couple of months now. Every other week, it will just crap out and refuse to start up past the POST screen. When this first happened, I googled to see how I could get her back in and created a recovery disk using the tools provided in Windows 8. Using this, she managed to recover some key files before having to reset the PC (deleting everything but the Windows files).
Since then, this problem has persisted despite several attempts to prevent it (using less of the hard disk, turning it off regularly and so on), and we were told at a laptop repair shop that it was most likely the hard disk. Upon hearing this, I ordered her a new Samsung hard drive (2.5 inch, 1tb, 5400rpm) to replace her existing one which seems to be dying/dead.
I have two main questions, which are:
Was the laptop repair guy correct in his assumption that it was the hard disk which was the issue?
If we replace the old hard drive with the new one, can we retain the copy of windows and the various lenovo drivers and utilities it includes?
    Thanks for your help,
    A8

Hi and thanks for the quick response.
Is there any way to know better what the issue is? What else could it be that would make a laptop black-screen and refuse to boot unless Windows was reset?
That's good news about the drivers and utilities. I'll check on those soon. As for the Windows, I understand that it would be difficult but surely there is some way it can be done? I googled and think OneKey Recovery might be something to look into. Any advice?
One possibity is that the hdd needs to be repaired since you can still reset.
The Windows provided by the manuafacturer can only be access/initialized through OKR. If OKR is not working properly you can't restore the drive to factory default.

  • Computer randomly shuts down and refuses to boot

    Hello all.
A while back I installed Win 7 Pro on this (I think I had to install it on an SSD via another machine then used that SSD in the T610 and used win repair to fix the installation).
It's been going smoothly generally and it is on mor or less 24/7 for light use. I use it for watching films and browsing the net. nothing uch more intensive. Ever since the start, I would come in the morning and find it had shu itself down. sometimes when I push the power button it would boot back up as if everything had sut down properl. Other times when I push the power button its backlight stays on but I get no activity. Even the HDD light does not flicker. I also cannot repeat the trial unless I disconnect the power cable because holding the power button for any length of time does not switch off the system*
Sometimes I have some success if I open the case, reconnect the SSD and push the power button again but that is rare.
I don't think it's overheating because sometimes I leave the machine off for 12 hours and it still refuses to boot for another few hours.
It's really frustrating and I'm not sure what to do as even if I disconnect the SSD and push the power button in it's "sulking" state I get no feedback; bios nor sounds.
Could my BIOS be faulty? How do I check/update it's version from within windows? Often I don't see the bios screen. I remember I used to see it a long time ago but now it does not appear.
*The only time I have seen the PC turn off after holding the power button is if I am in Windows repair mode for some reason.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

cpu3 (which is on board B) is doing most of the barking at you.
You likely have a bad DIMM.
Use your service contract and open a support case with Sun.
They'll be able to analyze the details of the panic events and will arrange to have the system serviced.

  • My Mac Pro is being stubborn, and refuses to boot.

    Howdy y'all.
My Mac Pro is being particularly pesky and won't boot up past a blank white/grey screen. It turns on, the RAM clicks, the fans spin up, all appropriate internal lights do light up correctly, but it gets stuck at that blank screen and refuses to do anything more. Once it gets to that point, the caps lock key on the keyboard stays lit.
I have seemingly isolated the issue to the graphics card—swapped RAM, swapped RAM trays, swapped graphics cards. Replacing the graphics card did allow it to boot. But what's interesting is that I swapped the graphics card from an identical machine (Mac Pro 1,1 that a friend of mine owns) and his card worked in mine, but my card also works in his machine. We both have the same card, a 7300 GT.
Any idea why this is? I'm stumped.

There is a set of operations that use simple graphics mode:
    • Boot up UNTIL it reaches the login screen
    • Recovery_HD
    • Boot from DVD
    • Safe Mode
    • Alt/Option Boot screens
Most of the others (except regular boot) put less demand on the Startup Disk, but Alt/Option boot is unique in that it puts NO demands on the Startup Disk, and its code is all in ROM.
For further reference, the dark gary Apple that appears with the spinner is LOADED off a Drive, it is not in ROM, so seeing the dark gray Apple says you were able to read some stuff off a drive.

  • How can I make my ipod stop freezing and refusing to boot up?

My ipod will randomly, about 25-50 times a day, refuse to start up and I have to reset it (Hold sleep/power till...etc)
Is there any way to make this stop?
I have kinda gotten used to it, but it is still really annoying. It will also not exit apps and not recognize any buttons. After a while of this, it freezes, and may or may not unfreeze.

    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • My brand new iPhone 5 keeps saying "Connection Unsuccessful: Make sure "___" is turned on and in range" when I try to connect to my BlueTooth Stereo.

I just bought a brand new iPhone 5 (White and Gold) and have been having trouble keeping it connected to my BlueTooth Stereo.  The stereo was purchased brand new back in September and is current on all software.  Before I had my iPhone 5, I had the iPhone 4 and had no troubles with it connecting or remembering to connect to the stereo when it was in range.  Now, in order to connect to it, I have to first "forget the device" then search for it again, find it, and connect.  As soon as I turn either the stereo off, turn the iPhone off, or switch modes on the stereo (to CD mode, radio, etc) it loses the connection and does not pick it up again.  It still shows up in my list of available bluetooth devices, but when I try to connect it says "Connection Unsuccessful: Make sure '____' is turned on and in range" which of course, it is.
I bought this stereo because I am a music teacher and use my phone frequently when teaching my classes.  You can probably imagine how cumbersome it becomes when after each class if I have alternated between using my iPhone to play music or switching to CD mode, I then need to "forget the device" and follow the steps I outlined above to get it working again.
Has anyone else had this problem with the new iPhone and does anyone have a solution (I HOPE!!!!!)
    Thanks!

Make sure that there are no other Macs backing up at the present time.
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back in
This will "fix" things about 98% of the time. Post back if you are in the unlucky 2% category.

  • XML Payload does not have namespace and prefix.

    Hello
I have created a consumer business service which will be called from JDEdwards EOne, pulls data from database and send it to Fusion Middleware.
SO, I have created proxy using JAX-WS option. And suggested in oracle doc, I created proxy outside OMW and then copied it to my project. XML payload is getting generated without namespace and prefix. After some research, I modified package-info.java. Now, I am able to send the payload and if test it locally from Jdeveloper and take xml output using marshaller I can see it has namespace and prefix as well. BUt, when I run this from server it does not have namespace and prefix.
    Please help.
    Thanks
    TK

    Hi Naresh,
The "rejectedMessage" property is for 10G, I am not 100% sure about its implementation in 11G.
In 10G the faulted XML file moves to this location "Oracle_Home\bpel\domains\domain_name\jca\project_directory\rejectedMessages".
This property is used to move the files which are not valid XML or which are not schema compliant. For DB polling I don't think this property is used.

I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 10. It came installed on my HP Desktop. I am can not get the warp text tool to work. It has worked in the past. Once I click warp text, the little window does not pop up, and if I try to do anything else after I click warp text, it wont let me. Just sounds the ding, alert, can still slightly navigate the program but can not use any other tools after clicking warp text. I just have to open task manager and close the program. not sure if I'm doing something wrong or maybe I just need to uninstall and re install. Having trouble finding out how to uninstall and reinstall because the program came pre installed on my desktop.

It actually sounds like the warp text window is opening off screen.
Resetting the photoshop elements 10 preferences should fix it.
*Press and hold the Shift+Ctrl+Alt keys just after you start the launch of the photoshop elements 10 editor
*Keep holding the keys down until you get a dialog asking if you want to delete the adobe photoshop elements setting file
    *Press Yes

  • The back button does not work consistently, and rarely works if I open an attachment...any ideas on fixing this?

The back button does not work consistently, and rarely if ever when I open an attachment. Does anyone have a fix for this?
    == This happened ==
    Not sure how often
    == I installed firefox

Same problem here: I never had a problem with the previous versions and now I don't even get my homepage when I click Firefox. Instead, I am getting a blank screen that says "New Tab", only after I click the "Home" symbol I get my Homepage (Yahoo). The browser - back and browser forward button don't work anymore, very annoying. Normally a newer version should be an improvement but it looks like Mozilla really messed up with this "improvement". probably I am going to use Google chrome from now on.

  • What does a question mark and i file mean on my macbook pro

what does a question mark and i file mean on my macbook pro when i turn it on?

To be more specific, the computer is not finding a valid system when it starts up. This may result from the hard drive's physical mechanism failing, or the system on the drive being corrupted in some way.
Repairing permissions is not likely to fix this issue. Instead I would suggest booting from the system install DVD, running Disk Utility, selecting your hard drive's partition and select *Repair Disk*.
Note: if the hard drive does not show up in Disk Utility at all, it is dead and will need to be replaced. Contact Apple (800-275-2273 in the USA) and have them set up warranty service, or carry the MacBook in to an Apple retail store to have it fixed. Be sure to [make an appointment|http://www.apple.com/retail] first you you may wait a long time to speak to a Mac Genius.
If Repair Disk finds any problems and is able to correct them, you may be able to restart and everything be okay. If it is unable to correct the problems, you will need to erase and restore your hard drive.
If Repair Disk does not find any problems, I would suggest an Archive and Install as described in [this article|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710].
    Best of luck.
