IBook G4 to G4 quicksilver with ethernet - stopped working

I have an iBook G4 running 10.4.11 with built in wireless internet & it connects just fine.
I also have a G4 quicksilver desktop without wireless (too old) also running 10.4.11.
Untill about 2 days ago, I had them connected with an ethernet cable & had no problems getting an internet connection on both.
Now ... I have been trying to 2 days now but can't seem to get them going again. I simply can't figure this out.
HELP!

Wow, Alex, this is like Christmas all over again! Thank you for being so patient with me and taking the time.
My TV is a SONY BRAVIA 40" KDL-40S2010 model. From what I understand, I have:
- HDMI
- VGA
- component
- S-video
- 2 peritels (I think they're called SCARTs in English)
- and audio L/R of course in 4 different areas according to the above
With my current ibook G4, you tell me I only have a mini-VGA out which is analog, so I'm happy to stick with the current S-video connection, because:
- the alternative VGA connection would also be analog - no point in changing?
- I don't see DVI-D on the TV and don't see the point of analog to digital anyway
My only current problem is that I find the S-video connection surprisingly poor.
I know not to expect the same resolution as a computer screen, but it is only just readable, and certainly excludes using the TV as an alternative or extended monitor for any purpose.
For video it is lousy but watchable.
I tried all three resolution options on the mac and played with all image formats on the TV.
MY QUESTION: is this normal???? Something tells me that it can't be - not this bad!
And since you're so kind, I'll test a hypothetical question: given my TV which I just bought and won't change for some time soon, if I upgrade my computer to a current MacBook Intel model (not a MacBook Pro), what would be the best audio & video connection to the TV?
If you answer this you definitely deserve a bottle of (French!) wine if you come through Paris!

  • Ethernet stopped working at last update

Hard-wired ethernet stopped working after the last update.
    Wireless works.
I have a trendnet wireless router. When the imac is connected via physical ethernet cable, it can actually ping and http to the trendnet and other machine on the same subnet just fine. However, it can't get beyond that. Looked at routing table and it looks fine.
When i take the same imac, connect via wireless to the same trendnet router, everything works.
    Routing table looks identical.
PC's in same line can be hard-wired to the trendnet router and work fine as well.
Checked for more updates and none available.

This is and old problem that as far as I know has not been resolved. You might try a search here to see all the other posts concerning this.
I had a similar problem with my brand-new Mac about a month ago. It worked on my wireless system when I first booted it up and then after I updated it about 20 minutes later, it began to repeatedly drop the Internet connection. After a week of fighting it, I had to switch to Ethernet thus having only my Mac wired while my PCs cruise right along on wireless.
When I first tried the Ethernet hookup, it still dropped a couple of times. It has not done so in the last 2 weeks, knock on wood. However, I am afraid to try wireless again as I may never get Ethernet back. Perhaps, just perhaps, Apple will resolve this in the next update if they even are aware of it.
Sorry for no answer to your problem. I hope someone sooner or later is able to resolve this.

We have JDK 1.6 installed.  The License Merge Module is not related to
    this issue.
    The files under \Program Files\Common Files\Business
    Objects\3.0\crystalreportviewers11\prompting  are not being installed.
If we copy files, into this folder structure the reports work.
One of the Business Object's Merge Modules should install the files
there rather than just an empty folder structure.
I got was able to figure out how to enter a customer support message.
They said that they could not support us because we were not on CRXIR2
    (Crystal Reports 11 Release 2).
I found a download for CRXIR2SP4 (same thing service pack 4).
I installed it the Merge Module names changed to include a "_5"
    Was:
    CrystalReports11_RDC_Reportengine.msm
    CrystalReports11_RDC_Runtime.msm
CrystalReports11_HotFix_Merge.msm (This is contrived by us from one of
    your hot fixes)
    Now:
    CrystalReports11_5_RDC_Reportengine.msm
    CrystalReports11_5_RDC_Runtime.msm
    CrystalReports11_5_RDC_License.msm (should have been included)
    *CrystalReports11_HotFix_Merge.msm (not needed anymore)
I will try to put a installer together with these.  If this work there
will be some complexity around uninstalling the old one and installing
    the new one.

  • Ethernet stopped working suddenly

I've been reading various topics on this board and it seems like many people have this problem but there are not many solutions.
My problem is that my ethernet stopped working suddenly. I've taken the following steps:
    - reset the cable modem
    - reset the router
    - turned off my ethernet card and rebooted the computer then turned it on again; renew DHCP ip
    - create a new location
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm not an expert, but here are a few suggestions & questions:
    • Did you reset things in the order you wrote them in your post i.e. modem before router? (That can be important. Also I find it takes my modem a couple of minutes to establish a connection, so I wait for a while before I turn on the router.)
    • Do you have any other computers wired up? Do they work?
    • Have you tried setting the computer location to Automatic?
    • Does your Modem have LED readouts which indicate when it is connected to the Internet and to a router?

Hi, my read aloud feature with PDF stopped working. It reports: no US English voice available on this system. How can I restore it to read aloud again? Thx, Rick

I am having the exact same problem... My Text-to-speech just errors out when I select a new voice and then that voice disappears from the choices of voices. I can not get it to speak anything since the Leopard upgrade. Some suggestions would be great as to what might cause this to fail. Thanks

  • Both thunderbolt display and ethernet stopped working at the same time

I use recent Macbook pro 13inch retina.  I use both of thunderbolt ports on ethernet and display.
I was messing around with application, and I found chess game. I played it for while than my display and ethernet suddenly stopped working.
I do know ethernet and display is working fine because My roommate still have access to the ethernet, and My xbox still works on my display monitor.
So, I suspected its thunderbolt problem, and I reinstalled Mavericks twice and reseted SMC and NVRAM, which didn't solve anything.
Do you have any suggestion before I take this computer to Apple store?

So the ports still work, and the display still lights up when you use it with your xbox? Are you sure about the xbox part, I didn't think the thunderbolt display worked with an xbox.

Do you have the LED Cinema display? Look at the back, do you have 3 USB ports or 3 USB ports, firewire and ethernet?

  • USB Ethernet stop working after hotplug

I have found that my Apple USB Ethernet dongle stop working if I plug in another USB device. This happens both using a USB hub, and when plugging directly into the MacBook Air. I also see this problem when using a similar dongle from another supplier (called AX88x72A). The USB Ethernet dongle works fine after booting, with status "Connected", but if I plug in another device like my phone or a  USB drive, the status changes to "Cable Unplugged" after a few seconds, ifconfig no longer show the en1 interface, and syslog gives a few error lines such as:
    Fri Jan 13 13:17:19 Airbook-II kernel[0] <Debug>: en1
    Fri Jan 13 13:17:19 Airbook-II kernel[0] <Debug>: Ethernet \[AppleUSBEthernet\]: Link down on en1
    Fri Jan 13 13:17:19 Airbook-II kernel[0] <Debug>: AppleUSBEthernet::prepareForFlash - Link down, Device 87bf600
    Fri Jan 13 13:17:19 Airbook-II kernel[0] <Debug>: AppleUSBEthernet::prepareForFlash - Link down, Device 87bf600
After this, I must reboot the MacBook Air to get the dongle working again. Do anybody know how to force the AppleUSBEthernet driver to rescan the device tree (or something similar)?
    With regards,
    Birger Retterstøl Olaisen

I have exactly the same problem here (MacBook Air 2,1 - OSX 10.6.8). After several tries (and reboots!), I've found that an unload/reload of the USB Ethernet driver works.
Note that operation is not automatic: I have to execute commands in a terminal in order to retrieve my Ethernet connection... but it is far better than a reboot!
So, if  you want to test my method, once you have plugged a USB key (or after an hotplug of your USB-ethernet dongle), you can execute these commands on your terminal (note there are 2 lines and no space in the kext name, a space may be inserted by this forum):
    sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBEth ernet.kext
    sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBEth ernet.kext
Of course, i've made a small script with these commands, and copied it on my PATH so it is even easier to execute it. It works perfectly for me, and I hope it could help.
    David.

  • Wired ethernet stops working on c2d MBP

I am a new 15 inch C2D MBP owner and I'm just starting to learn all the Mac stuff... I need your help because I have a serious problem with wired ethernet stability under macOS. I need to know if it's something specific to my machine or if anyone else has similar problem.
I am connected to a LAN with a 10/100 Mbit switch. I'm using a good cable (checked!). And my connection seems to hang from time to time. Usually this happens under heavier load (torrent plus multi-tab browsing), but it dies sometimes during casual browsing or checking for system updates. And it's anywhere from 3 minutes to 12 hours between hangs...
The symptoms are strange. The connection seems to be on, but there's a sudden surge in bad packet received number and the network connection stops working remaining on-line. Putting the machine to sleep or manually shutting down the line helps immediately. I'm using:
    sudo ifconfig en0 down
    sudo ifconfig en0 up
At first I suspected hardware problem but the same line works perfectly under Windows (with even higher load, and tcpip.sys patched to 1000 connections).
It acted like this from the very first moment I got it and I have no clue if I should contact service or wait for a patch or maybe just stick to Windows (just kidding)...
I've browsed the forum and it seems I'm not the only one with the problem:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=649927
but this topic is unsolved... There's nothing really strange in system.log:
Dec 15 17:22:45 honsiu kernel[0]: AppleYukon: bad packet received. length: 20, packet status bits: Packet fragment

Any hints appreciated. It's a beautiful machine and I'm so sorry it doesn't work as it should...

    evans_re,
does the trackpad not work? If it works, you could try selecting “Shut Down…” from the Apple menu.
As a last resort, you can hold down the power button for approximately ten seconds, which should force a (non-clean) shutdown.
If your keyboard is completely non-functional (excepting the power button), then you should take it to an Apple store or other qualified service facility.

  • Ethernet stopped working

My ethernet has stopped working, can I get it working again or does it need repair?
I've rebooted the iMac and during boot I can see the router port light shows some activity but then switches off before boot is complete. The ethernet shows as not connected in System Preferences/Network. I have tried changing the ethernet cable. I have tried moving the ethernet cable to another port on the router. I have tried rebooting the router.
    Can anyone offer further ideas?

    Hi,
I have had this problem with my old iMac 24" and now my newer (20 month old) iMac 27".
Have had both these machines to Apple and have been told that the ethernet port is faulty. The only solution is an expensive board replacement.
This appears to be a serious weakness with the iMac, as I know of others with the same problem.
My 4 year old PC (Windows OS) on the same network, does not have a ethernet problem, neither does my Macbook Pro.

  • I can't subscribe to Match on Win 7 with iTunes 10.6.3.25. When Apple ID auth window comes up iTunes crashes with "iTunes stopped working" and iTunes closes.

On Windows 7 with iTunes 10.6.3.25 I cannot subscribe to iTunes Match. In iTunes I click on iTunes Match in the left pane then click the "Subscribe for $25 a year" button. A window that looks like I am going to be asked to login using my Apple ID and password starts to come up but then an error occurs and I get a window that says "iTunes stopped working" then iTunes closes. What can I do ?

I've also read somewhere about using Win Rar to extract files to do with apple mobile device support from the itunes installer file, would you recommend that to? I don't really fancy the idea of doing anything that involves my registry because knowing me I'll end up screwing my laptop up for good lol
It's a little more involved than just doing a standalone AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi install, I'm afraid. The relevant drivers in AMDS are not digitally signed for 64-bit XP, so you have to force XP to accept a driver install that it would try its damnedest to not do. There's no driver issues for other 64-bit componentry in the installer package (I think the GEAR drivers install on XP 64-bit systems), but I believe there's still a bit of fancy footwork involved in getting them installed too ... although it's been a long time since I've looked at an instruction set, and I might not be recalling those things correctly. (So if you're not comfortable with system modifications, it might be best to steer clear of the Orca-based techniques ...)

  • When i click on itunes store a message comes up with itunes stopped working

when i click on itunes store a message comes up with itunes stopped working

    Hey there Kezzleberry82,
It sounds like you can open the iTunes application but when you click iTunes Store the application becomes unresponsive. I would use the troubleshooting from the following article to help troubleshoot the issue named:
iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1717
Start with opening iTunes in Safe Mode, and continuing from there per the instructions here:
    Start iTunes in Safe Mode
Open iTunes in Safe Mode to isolate any interference from plug-ins or scripts not manufactured by Apple.
Hold down Shift–Control while opening iTunes. You should see a dialog that says "iTunes is running in safe mode" before iTunes finishes starting up.
    Click Continue.
See if the issue you're experiencing persists in Safe Mode.
If you have the same issue while iTunes is in Safe Mode, proceed to the "Create a new user account" section. If you don't experience the same issue, follow these steps to remove third-party plug-ins.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • [SOLVED] Ethernet stops working after a while

When I work on this computer, the ethernet stops after a while, sometimes this is after 2 minutes, sometimes after half an hour. When I do
    sudo /etc/rc.d/network restart
everything works again for a while. The internet doesn't work in chromium nor pacman so it isn't just one application.
Anyone knows how I can find the cause of this?
    Thanks already!

Also, tell us about your network.  Are you plugged into a corporate or school network? your own private router? into a DSL or Cable modem?
When it stops, what is the output of ip link  ??
    of ip addr  ??
    of ip route  ??
What is the make, model and chipset of your NIC?

  • Problem with ethernet jack, works fine wirelessley

I just moved into a new place that has ethernet jacks in each room. I happened to have one right behind the tv stand where the Apple TV is. If I plug the Apple TV into the ethernet jack it disappears out of iTunes.
If I unplug it and it uses the wireless AEBS Extreme network all works well as far as connecting, but since my place has metal studs the wireless connection has a little too much noise for the best connection, that's why I thought the ethernet jack would be better.
I know the ethernet jack works fine, I tested it with my MacBook Pro and it works perfectly fine with the ethernet jack.
Any suggestions on how to use the ethernet jack and keep Apple TV displayed as a device in iTunes?

Sounds like you have determined the ethernet jack is physically good.
Are you using fixed IP addresses or DHCP? If you don't use DHCP you may have to enter your IP address, subnet mask, router, and DNS addresses via the settings of AppleTV..
