IBook G4 to HDTV

Hello,
I have searched this and other fora and am still unclear about everything I need in order to hook up my TV to my laptop. I have an iBook G4 for a computer and a Samsung LED TV 6000 (which is HDTV) for the TV.
I believe that the video output for the iBook is VGA. The TV has only HDMI input capability, and one slot for HDMI IN 1(DVI) which I am almost sure supports an HDMI-DVI cable, with the HDMI end for the TV and the DVI end into the other device.
What I think I can do is hook up an HDMI-DVI cable to the TV, then connect the DVI end of that cable to a DVI-VGA cable, and then the VGA end of that cable to a VGA adapter for my iBook. Is this correct? Will the HDMI-DVI connect into the DVI-VGA??
Please tell me if this is right! What types of these cables and adapters do I need specifically? THANKS!!!

The best option is a converter box like this:
http://sewelldirect.com/Component-VGA-to-HDMI-Scaler-720p.asp
The connection would be like this: iBook mini-VGA to VGA adapter>VGA cable>converter box>HDMI cable>TV.
A VGA signal is analog, and DVI & HDMI signals are digital. A string of cables will not do the conversion you need in order to get picture to the TV. It won't hurt to try using just cables to see if you get a picture, but the converter box will work.

  • IBook G4 and HDTV

    Hello,
I have an iBook G4 (1.33 GHz, 1.5 GB) running OS 10.4.11. Can the iBook use a 1080p LCD HDTV as a monitor for showing iPhoto slideshows, etc? If so, what adaptors, cables, etc. do I need?
    Thanks.
    Mike

The iBook G4 has a mini-VGA connector which has the following output options:
    VGA using the Apple VGA Display Adapter (M8639G/A). This supports 640 x 480 pixels at 60 Hz, 800 x 600 pixels at 75 Hz, and 1024 x 768 pixels at 75 Hz.
    S-Video or composite video using the Apple Video Adapter (M9109G/A). This supports 640 x 480 at 60 Hz, 800 x 600 at 60 Hz, and 1024 x 768 at 60 Hz.

  • IBook to HDMI (analog)

    Hello.
Anyone has had success in connecting an iBook to an HDTV using HDMI ?
I have the iBook mini-DVI to VGA adapter, and am planning to buy a VGA to HDMI adapter (or rather VGA to DVI then DVI to HDMI).
This seems weird, but I am not sure Apple's mini-DVI to DVI adapter would produce anything out of an iBook. (beacause it might not be transferring DVI signal).
For information, DVI and HDMI can be used for digital, but also (although not always) for analog signal.
As an example, my new Panasonic LCD HDTV has 2 HDMI plugs, but, according ot the manual, only on that accepts analog signal.
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Jérôme.

I have the iBook mini-DVI to VGA adapter...
The iBook G4 requires the mini-VGA to VGA adapter (Apple VGA Display Adapter).
Apple's Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter will not work.

  • VGA Display Adapter to HDTV

I purchased a VGA display adapter from Apple. I want to connect my iBook to a HDTV with HDMI interface. What cable do I need to connect the end of the adapter which appears to be a serial connector to the HDTV? Thanks for any assistance.

I would use the Apple mini-DVI to DVI adapter and then get a DVIU to HDMI cable from a local retailer. They are also available online from a ton of places - and probably at a lot lower price.
There really is no need to involve VGA when you would need another adapter to go from VGA to DVI, then the cable to go from DVI to HDMI. I would take that adapter to your local Apple Store and see if they would do an exchange for you.

  • How to Connect iBook with HDTV for iMovie?

How can I connect my iBook G4, which has iMovie 7, to an HDTV (or its VCR) in order to download the HDTV's digital file, for iMovie? I do this now for an analog signal TV using analog to digital converter between my iBook and an analog TV VCR. Will appreciate comments. Chuck Y. Chicago. 28 November 2008.

12/9/2008. My own answer follows. I phoned Apple Tech Support and they did not know. I phoned Computer Discount Warehouse Tech Support where I bought my iBook and they did not know. I phoned the Apple Store and they did not know, but said it would take a cord with the three--red, white, yellow--plugs for the TV set into a firewire plug for the iBook. I phoned Radio Shack and they did not know nor have such a cord. I phoned MacMall and they did not know. Finally I phoned Canopus who makes the converter to use between an analogue TV and my iBook, and they said that the converter would also accept the digital to digital signal from the TV VCR (after mid February 2009 TV change to digital) to my iBook. Best wishes. C. Yopst, Chicago

  • IBook G4 and Sony HDTV

I'm trying to connect a Sony HDTV KDL-32XBR6 to my iBook G4 1,33 GHz via the mini VGA adapter and a VGA Male to Male cable. I'm also running Screen Spanning Doctor 0.3.3 to expand the iBook G4's display capabilities. But the Sony TV doesn't show anything at the PC input (VGA port). It says unsupported signal. I've tried other resolutions (all the recomended in the TV manual), even mirroring and nothing works. So I decided to try with my B&W G3 wich has a ATI RADEON 7000 and got the same results. The only way I could see something was using the S-Video output from the RADEON and plugging to the Sony's S-Video input with limited resolutions and at 4:3 aspect ratio. Is it the TV or the male cable?
    Thanks for any ideas

It was a bad VGA cable. I replaced it with one that comes with filters and it works perfectly.

  • IBook G4 with Philips HDTV

    Hi All,
At the moment I attempting to connect my G4 to My new Philps Pixel Plus HDTV. The Cables which Im using are HDMI to DVI-D with DV-I (female) - 15 (Male) adapter to another adapter to fit my G4. I know its messy is there another way??
However the main problem is it doesnt seem to work. I was hoping to play DVDs etc onto my TV though it isnt working. What am I doin' wrong? Or is it possible?
    Thanks,
    Magnetic

Will_3rd is right, your iBook doesn't have DVI output. To output DVDs to you TV you'll need the Apple Video Adapter, a video cable (either s-video or composite depending on the inputs on your TV, s-video would be better) and an audio "Y" cable to get the audio into your TV. I've written a FAQ about connecting your iBook to the TV here:

  • Using Samsung LCD HDTV as a monitor

My TV tells me 'format not supported' when I plug in my 14 ibook g4 using the VGA connection. The TV is an '06 Samsung 32" LCD HDTV flat screen. Anyone have any advice?

Is there a difference in video cards for pc's and mac's?
Just about every PC or Mac has different video capabilities so the answer would be yes in almost every situation.

  • Mini-VGA to VGA cable for HDTV

1.)I am need of some real knowledge. I just purchased an LG 720p LCD HDTV. I want to connect my iBook to the display (which is one of the main reasons i bought the tv). I use the mini-vga to vga cable that came with my iBook, i then connect it to a VGA to VGA cable (the included cable is way to short to reach,so i attach the cable that came with my tv). Boot up...the iBook detects the display under the Display tab in system prefs, but the pc-input on the TV is still blank flashing "no signal" indicating there is no input. I've also tried LG's suggestion (which is the same every time i call) to lower the resolution and reboot to no avail. (they are some real smarties over there..Lifes Good must mean for their customer service rep's!
2.)I know there is a mini-vga to composite/s-video cable available, but i heard the resolution suffers greatly. I'm make films and would want the best (VGA) resolution possible from my iBook. Any help is greatly appreciated.
3.) I've also heard of programs like screenspanningdoctor and DisplayConfigX will these help with my HDTV problem??
    Thanks

No cable can extract an audio signal from your MBP's mini-Displayport. It just isn't there.
If your monitor offers the option of selecting separate inputs for video and audio when HDMI is used for the video, just add a separate audio cable from your Mac's headphone port to the monitor's RCA audio inputs (red and white). If the monitor assumes that audio and video will be delivered together whenever its HDMI port is used, then you'll have to send the video signal via DVI or VGA, neither of which carries audio. Then your monitor should play both signals, because it won't expect both to be coming through the same cable and will find the separate audio signal.
Alternatively, there is also this option:
    http://www.kanexlive.com/iadapt20
It combines a USB audio signal with a mini-Displayport video signal and sends them both to the monitor or TV through a single HDMI cable. But it's pricey, and it takes up a USB port that you may not be able to spare.

  • Best Way To Display Photos On HDTV?

I would like to display photos on a HDTV (16:9 aspect ratio, 1280x720 pixel max) at the highest possible resolution.
The best photo quality, I assume, is obtained by connecting a computer’s DVI output (or a networked media server) directly to the HDTV’s DVI/HDMI/component video input, but my iBook doesn't have DVI out nor do I have a media server.
So the next option seems to be to burn the photos to a disc and play them through a DVD player, but from what I've read iDVD only supports resolutions of 720x540 (4:3) or 854x480 (16:9). And in fact the photos I've burned to disc using iDVD look fuzzy and are not HD quality. Is there any better way to burn them to disc and display something closer to the HDTV’s maximum resolution of 1280x720?
Does some form of photo CD or Roxio Toast’s Motion Pictures allow the display of higher resolution photos?

    Hi Ted
i have checked Roxio's support and it states that you require an image from a 3 megapixel or higher camera to get the desired resolution for HD. toast 7, if you have it supports HD resolution of 720p(progressive) and 1080i(interlaced). so its recommended that when you create your masterpiece choose 720p which supports a resolution of 1280x720 and this setting is only available if you choose 16:9 instead of 4:3.

  • Connect iMac to an HDTV??

    Hi,
Does anyone know if an HDTV will work when hooked up to the new iMac? I can't seem to find anything on the topic. I have a Toshiba 30HF85 TV with HDMI and I have a DVI-to-HDMI cable.
I'll obviously need to get the mini-dvi adapter. I'm going to order the iMac soon and am just curious if I'll be able to mirror and use Front row on the TV...
Anyway, if anyone has attempted a similar hookup please let me know... Thanks!

Just last weekend I connected my Intel iMac to my Sony HDTV with the mini-DVI to DVI connector. My TV has a DVI input. It automatically showed up on the iMac as a Sony TV (in the display preferences). I wanted to try playing a HD movie trailer on it. In some ways it worked better than I was expecting (when opening an app such as iPhoto or Safari, it automatically enlarges and takes up about the same real estate as it does on your monitor. Very easy to read). But there is a problem with overscan. When I set it to mirrored mode, the image is cut-off on all four sides. There is an option to turn off overscan, but this then makes about an inch of black around the (full) image displayed. I only played with this for about five minutes and then put my iMac back in my office. When the MacBook Pro arrives (next week), then I will play around with this a little more. On a seperate occasion, I attached another LCD monitor to use in extended desktop. This setup is extremely useful for dragging and dropping from one app to another (such as iPhoto to iDVD or iMovie).

  • IMac VGA to HDTV via component video?

I would like to connect an iMac Snow to a HDTV to display photos. Will it work to simply connect the two with a VGA-to-component video cable (price: about $20), or does the process require a VGA-to-component converter box (price: about $180-380)?
And if a converter is required, a brief explanation of why (in laymen's terms) would be appreciated.
iMac Snow   Mac OS X (10.3.6)
    iBook

I have a sharp LCD TV (LC-45GD5U) and I am trying to hook the TV up to my apple cube with a nVidea GeForce FX 5200. The TV has a DVI in, S-Video in, HD component in, and a normal component in. I have tried all of the connections with the TV alone and I can get nothing to work. However, I was able to get the TV to display if I had the TV on the DVI connection and the monitor on the VGA connection and only at a select few square resolutions. The whole point of having the TV connected is to have a bigger monitor so I consider it a waste that I have to have my smaller monitor connected as well and I am about out of ideas. If anybody has any ideas please let me know.
