Hi Charles,
Welcome to Apple Discussions
What is the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard drive? You can find out how to get the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard drive from this past thread. You might want to look at this thread because you should verify and repair permissions.
I hope that helps,
Jon

  • IBook has troubles starting up: (?)

The iBook of a friend has troubles starting up. She needs an apple for her studies and has had nothing but trouble with this iBook. She has already have to replace the motherboard and faulty RAM at the store where she bought it.
The most recent trouble is this: sometimes the iBook won't start or it takes a long time before it does. On the screen appears (?). Also when she's working with the laptop, the respons time is sometimes very long.
Her teachers said her that this problem is caused by the hard disk. But I've found a topic of a forum, where somebody had the exact same problem and where replacing the HD didn't help.
Does somebody have an idea what could be an answer?
Also, the store only gives a one-year warranty, but since there have been so many parts replaced, isn't there a two year warranty?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Here is the link to Apple's Knowledge Base article on recovering from the flashing question mark folder:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58042
How long has it been since hard drive maintenance was performed? If it's been awhile, try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see the normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar ("Macintosh HD" unless it's been renamed). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps out performance.

  • Airport Extreme Base Station and iBook G4 trouble

Hi, I am having a problem with my iBook connecting to the internet when I turn it on. I have to turn off the AEBS and my DSL modem (AT&T) and keep going through the Network Diagnostics. It eventually connects but shouldn't always just connect? Before I had the AEBS I could get a wireless internet signal (Netgear) without a problem. Help!!! I really do not know what I am doing!! My AEBS in the one that looks like a flying saucer. Thanks in advance fro any help, I hope I have provided enough info.

Ok, please try the following, in order. After each step, try powering-down and restarting the Mac to verify if the steps solved the problem. If it hasn't continue on to the next step in the sequence:
    1. Run the Disk Utility to repair Disk Permissions.
    2. Turn off the Mac OS X Firewall
    o System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall
    o Click the "Stop" button.
    3. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
    o Go to /Library/Preferences
o Move the SystemConfiguration folder and com.apple.networkConfig.plist file to the desktop.
o Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder & .plist file back to it's original location.)
    4. Create a New User Account
o Create a new user account.
o System Preferences > Accounts > Click "+" to add a new account
o Log off, then log back on with the new user account.
o Try connecting with the AirPort.

  • Ibook has trouble starting up, and when it does, it freezes immediately

    Hey folks,
Last time I had problems with my ibook G4, everyone on here was extremely helpful, so I'm hoping you can help me out once more
Today I was using my computer as I usually do, and it froze, something I've never experienced. After shutting down my computer and restarting it, it wouldn't boot. The gray screen with the "thinking" wheel went fine, but when it got to the blue screen that usually has the "starting mac os x" window and progress bar, nothing happened. The window didn't pop up, and the computer was stuck on that blue screen. When I restarted, the same thing happened. I couldn't get my desktop to load.
After removing the battery for about 20 minutes and trying again, the computer got past that blue screen and loaded my desktop. However, after about 2 minutes, everything completely froze again, leaving me where I started.
Now I can get past the blue screen MAYBE 1/5 of the time after multiple restarts using control, command, power, but when it does, everything freezes. Luckily I was able to get it to work long enough to send myself important files (not a great time for this to happen considering I have a 12 page paper due tomorrow, haha) and check the S.M.A.R.T. status, which was fine and normal.
Anyone know what's going on?? Thanks!!!!!

    hi there.
i can't say what the problem is but i can perhaps show you some ways to find it out.
firs thing i would do is to reset the P-Ram. shut your computer down and press "command" + "option (alt)" + "p" + "r" right after you pressed the start button and hold this combination until you hear the startup gong for tree times.
this can allready help - if not, try to boot from a system-cd. you can check the drive from system disc - do this and also check premissions.
if you have a "hardware-check" cd, you can use it to check your hardware.
post again if this doesn't help.

  • My iBook needs help.

I have a 2 years old 933 MHz iBook G4, and i will soon be upgrading to a MacBook Pro (yay). This iBook has troubled me a great deal. I will sell it a while after i get my MacBook. I have enjoyed it a great deal, even to the point that i play starwars battlefront on it (with 3 12 volt fans to keep the temp. down), my iBook is to underpowered for that...
Here is some of what my iBook has experienced:
    *The Hard Drive is wacky
Many months ago I had to boot up from my external FireWire backup HD because the main drive did not boot, I think I took care of that when I used Techtool, Disk Warrior, and any thing else that is not norton (witch is unsupported on Tiger for the version I had[I HATE NORTON!!]) It is now working with out having to reformat it.
*I would use a edrive (Techtool) if it took up less space, I only have 4 GB of free space (10%) at this time.
*I had my first kernel panic is several months a few days ago, all I did was a fresh boot and open Safari and let it sit.
*I use Yasu when my mac acts up
    *I have applejack installed
*My internet is slow (well it is my isp fault, they have given me my 4th modem [it does not supply a steady bandwidth but on most of the pings I do to google there is a 98% or higher success rate, or my isp DNS server[...]) ok.... ok... so that is not directly my iBook. But I am in the country and that is like the only broad band available. My dad pays $70 for 720 Kbps average and spikes of data up to 183.5KB/s today. I have inquired, no Comcast cable or Verizen DSL out here. (Do you think that is overpriced?)
    What I am asking:
I would like to know if any of you have any suggestions on what I should do before I sell it, and on what I can do to stabilize my IBook. (I don't want to have to buy it back from the person I sell it to.) I think I will do a clean install and wipe the drive 12 times for the person I sell it to.

But the cron scripts WILL RUN on their own when your computer is on if you're using Mac OS X 10.4.x - even if your computer is off when they're scheduled. Mac OS X 10.4.x will run them when it can, you don't need a third party utility to force it. Apple has changed the Mac OS so it does this on its own.
You've already got one extra, unneeded process running every sixty minutes because of the Anacron, how many other extra, unneeded processes are running on your computer? THAT is one likely reason why it's slowing down.
I realize that with the Levels/Reputations turned off and only the online posts showing, it's hard to tell who's offering you some advice. But I have over 25,000 posts here and I am one of only four Level 5 users. You can choose to ignore my advice, but if I were you, I'd do an archive & install of Mac OS X to clean up your system and not run those kinds of utilities unless you know what they do and how to use them. I've never used any kind of utility like that and I have three perfectly running Macs at home and 250 at work.

  • Internet expoler and safari on 10.3.9

    hi,
i just have a qestion about browsers on my emac.
so when i was running os x 10.3.5 youtube worked great on safari. now that i have 10.3.9, as soon as i type in youtube.com safari closes! why does it do this? also how can i install flash on IE for mac? i get to the adobe site and click FLASH FOR OS X 10.3. than nothin hapens!!
    THANKS IN ADVANCE

I find IE has a hard time displaying almost any modern web page. It's been untouched for something like 4 years.
I find the Camino browser does very well. The last version that ran under OS 10.3.9 is Camino 1.6.10. It's here:
    http://caminobrowser.org/download/releases/1.6.10/
Are you asking about the iBook G3 in your profile or an eMac that this forum covers? Any eMac will run nicely with Tiger 10.4.11. Our oldest eMac is a "first-issue" 700mHz and does quite well with Camino, FireFox, and Safari after I upgraded it to 10.4 and bumped the RAM to 768MB.
If it's the iBook having trouble, you may wish to peruse the iBook G3 forums for suggestions from people with the same model as yours. That forum is here:

Anyone has any idea that i can DIY to solve this problem.
My Ibook is back because I requested for..
    Help?

Hi, Huplim. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. You wrote: "However, since 2 weeks ago, it keep asking me to restart with a grey screen display with few different languages."If you are seeing this message, that indicates a kernel panic.
If so, see my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.
    2. You wrote: "Even worst, this morning the whole system is not able to startup, aske me to mac-boot or shut-down."See "To continue booting, type 'mac-boot' and press return" Message.
    3. You wrote: "So I sent to Apple centre near by. Problem never resolved."If the advice above does not sort it out, you need to have the Mac serviced. You may want to speak to the manager of the "Apple centre" to which you took your iBook.
    Good luck!

  • I have iphone 4s and just bought an ebook for ibook, trouble is the font is so tiny I can't read it and the font sizer is not working? Please help!

Hi, I have the  iphone 4s and just bought an ebook for ibook, trouble is the font is so tiny I can't read it and the font sizer is not working? Please help!

    Hello Glittergirl68,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like the function to reseize the Font in an iBook is not functioning properly.
I recommend a few things here. First close all the apps that are running in the background:
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
From: iOS: Force an app to close
              http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
When you have done that, restart the phone, and try again.
If the issue persists, I would follow these steps from the article:
iOS: Troubleshooting apps purchased from the App Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1702
    2. Check for app updates
You can setup apps to update automatically in Settings > iTunes & App Store, but make sure that your apps are up to date:
Open the App Store and tap Updates. If updates are available, tap Update All.
If  prompted, enter your iTunes Store account information. App Store will then download and install the app updates.
Note: Some apps may require a Wi-Fi connection to update.
    3. Install another app from the App Store
If none of your user-installed apps will launch, there could be an issue with Apple ID authorization. Download and install an app that isn't already installed on your device to reset this information. You can also remove an app from your iOS device and download it again from the App Store or sync the app from your computer.Note: If you have installed apps using multiple Apple ID accounts, you may need to perform this step for each account.
    4. Restart the app
If the issue affects only a single app, try closing just that app.
    5. Restart your device
Turn the device off and on.
    6. Reinstall the affected app
Remove the app from your device and reinstall it:
Tap and hold any app icon on the Home Screen until the icons start to wiggle and show a small "x" in the top-right corner of the app.
Tap the "x" in the corner of the app you want to delete.
Tap Delete to remove the app and all of its data from your device.
    Press the Home button.
    Go to the App Store.
Search for the app and then download it again.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Having trouble adding new collection in ibooks?

    Hi
I am having trouble a adding a new collection in ibooks.  When I click on "+New Collection" it disappears and the keyboard does not pop up and then seems to freeze.  It was working fine yesterday and only encountered this problem this morning.
Has anyone else had this problem or know how I go about fixing it?
    Thank you!

The problem is not thru TWC... I can access my account in Outlook and also by Webmail.
The problem is on the Iphone 4 (I had no problem on my 3G). Like I said, the settings I have entered are the same as the settings for the other 4 accounts. The only portion of the setup that I cannot access during the "failed" setup is the "Advanced" where I can turn SSL off and confirm password authentication.

  • IBook G4 OpenFirmware trouble

I am having lots of USB trouble on my iBook. I cannot boot into a USB drive with any commands in OF. I have tried several bootable USB thumb drives with the same result. When I start up into OpenFirmware, the light on the thumb drive goes on (it always stays on when the laptop is powered on) and then goes off like it's not plugged in. I have made a backup of my HD onto an external HD with CarbonCopyCloner, and when I boot into OF, the HD will not spin up. When I plug it into another USB port, it turns on, but after about 7 secs, it crashes with the read/write head jumping to the side like when you force shut-down a computer. If I needed to restore my drive, would I have to have a Firewire to USB cable to boot the drive and clone it back onto the laptop?

Most times the USB thumb drive does not make a suitable boot volume for G4 Macintosh in OS X. If an OS X is installed or clones to a USB flash drive, the formatting has to be correct and sufficient free space must exist. Plus a few other rules that are widely published need be applied. With some drives, they need to be self-powered and not use a port on the subject computer; the power is not there all the time during the boot cycle, so the external drive using only port power may not be seen at all. This may vary, but especially when troubleshooting or booting from a system clone, etc.
•Mac startup from open firmware to OS X - search result link:
    https://www.google.com/#q=Mac+startup+from+open+firmware+to+OS+X
In the later G5 iMac, there was a change in firmware to allow USB flash drives to be used as boot volumes. Some unix variants do OK from a flash usb drive, and the OS can be tweeked in Terminal. Then there are Developer pages...
There are advanced user databases at Apple Support involving the use of such behind-the-scenes technologies and developer discussions, perhaps you should register to use them? It does not cost.
There are times when it may be possible, but when they will work, they should not require you to run the computer in Open Firmware. And some of the steps with associated questions lend questions of purpose that also may breech the terms of use and other intellectual property rights when copies are made, etc.
So, that may be why some questions across the discussions threads could go unanswered. Some are due to lack of an appropriate reply, or unwillingness to commit to some kind of reply that may also be marginal. And as these machines, OS X versions & user base fades, fewer would be able to formulate a reasonable reply.
Hopefully you realize there were a few who did read the question.
Some may have not understood it as a day-to-day user inquiry,
and others probably did not want to research an answer online.
Sorry to have said nothing until now, & even now.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • HT5065 Trouble adding video .M4V to iBooks

Is anyone having trouble with adding video to iBooks? I exported the files as the instructions said but it is still not working.

    What does that mean?
Does iBA say the file format isn't allowed?
Can you add it ok but it won't play at all?

  • HT5085 I am having trouble with an iBooks but it is not working. Any hints?

I am having trouble with downloading iBooks. The book has many repeated pages and missing pages. I have tried going to "purchased" and downloading it again but the download doesn't work. Thanks.!

On an iPad there should be a Store button at the top left of the iBooks app (top right if you are on an iPhone or iPod Touch) - tap that to go into the store, and there should be a Purchased tab at the bottom right of the store page from where you can re-download past ibook purchases (assuming that they remain available in the store).
Whether you can buy books from within the ibookstore will depend upon what country that you are in, some countries currently just have free books.

  • I am trying to boot Ubuntu 12.4 on my iBook G4, but am having trouble getting my iBook to recognize the boot disk in the CD Drive.  Why?

I am trying to boot Ubuntu 12.4 on my iBook G4, but am having trouble getting my iBook to recognize the boot disk in the CD Drive.
I have pressed "C" during boot to force it to boot from the Optical Drive.  It boots normally.
I have pressed "option" to get the boot menu.  The only option available is my hard disk drive.
I have pressed "option""command""shift""delete" at the same time during boot to force it to skip booting the hard disk.  I get a blinking smily face/question mark for a while, then it shows the boot menu, at which point the only available option is my hard disk drive.
In system preferences in OS X I have looked to change the boot drive, but the only option, again, is the hard disk.
Can I not boot from the Optical Drive?
    Why?

    Hello,
From the link I provided it says:
Nearly all open-source software is available to download from the Ubuntu repositories, but the amount of proprietary software available for PowerPC linux is limited. You will have the same version of Firefox, LibreOffice, etc as other architectures.
Notable absentees are: Chrome/Chromium, Adobe Flash (although open-source alternatives are available, see below), Wine (however Qemu can be used, see below), ndiswrapper, proprietary video drivers and Dropbox (but, you can use Ubuntu One).
I do recall it being very limited when it came do downloading Linux software that supported PPC.
You wouldn't be any better off than using firefox or safari on Mac OS X 10.4.11.
If your looking for a faster and more compatible web browser then I would suggest the following, which I've recently found very useful on Mac OS X 10.4

    Hope this helps.

  • Iʻm having trouble leaving a review in the iBooks store.

Iʻm having trouble leaving a review in the iBooks store. I have an Apple ID and password and I sign in ok. I clicked Ratings and Reviews and I see other reviews there so I know it can be done. The website accepted my 4 star rating, but it is "grayed out" in the area for me to write a review. I tried cutting and pasting, and it seemed to accept my submittal but my review never showed up and it is a good review.
When I click on "Write a Review" it shows "you have already reviewed this item" because it accepted the 4 star rating but not my written review. Anybody know what the problem could be?  Thanks a lot!!
I have a laptop with Windows 8 if that makes a difference.

  • TS1702 WHY EVERYTIME APPLE PUTS OUT A NEW VERSION OF IBOOKS DOES IT CRASH HAPPENED LAST TIME AND NOW WITH V6 i HAVE DONE EVERYTHING IN THE TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE LIKE SIX TIMES AND IT STILL WONT LOAD MY BLOODY BOOKS

Why does ibooks crash everytime there is an update? I am so sick to death of having to stuff around and do all the trouble shooting rubbish to try and get ibooks working again, everytime there is an up date. I have wiped restored re synced changed usb leads turned my computer off unplugged and replugged every bloody thing  about a dozen times and still after a week, instead of reading my books I have a very expensive paperweight. What is the problem and why does this keep happening with every new update. I am so frustrated and annoyed that I can't just read my book, it is why I bought the **** thing.  Anybody got any other ideas before I go insane?

Dude thank-you for your wonder detailed knowldge, I have descovered that lets say xp 1700 in a ultra 2 can only handle at the most 143fsb mult at 12.
Given the settings" irq's are a major",part of directing traffic and power? example:
Sound blaster Live , uses two irq's most common at"Auto" is, irq 10, or 5, and Sound blaster 16 emulation usually takes irq 5,. I have found that the sound card in slot3 works great , but to do this I had to change the Bio's and assign slot 3 irq 7 . and make sure printer port has share irq enabled
Problems that accure with bad traffic are like this. Start a dedicated server. minimize than start your game?":censored:  no sound what could be wrong"? Shoot another problem Connection problem?. The computer nerd is getting trouble over the ordeal. ANSWER! IRQ can fix the problem, Study the irq and make changes as you go. "what would it be like with no stop signs,,,that is the same as a irq. with the same knowldge this topic brings IRQ need to be clearly understood.
I can honestly say my system is error free and running like a dream.
    xp 2500 barton 333
    creative sound 5.1gamers.
512 mb kingston ram 400 mhz
    boadband either onboard.
    MSI 5700 128 mb ddr
    Setting are:
    163 fsb
    mult of 11
    ddr 333
video memory clock down to 450mhz
    3d clock to 390mhz
The delta is a smooth running board also I want to mention to the person with crackling sounds, change the irq like I did, that fix the problem and the power is totaly too good to be true.
