IBook G4 vs. lowest end MacBook!

Hi All. I just ordered the $1,099 MacBook from Amazon.com. I currently have a iBook G4 that is in perfect condition and works great. What are some of the differences I will notice. Just want to know if this is worth it, so I can cancel the order if need be. Any help would be much appreciated!

Unless I missed a post, and I undertand you already cancelled your order so I'm not sure if your still reading this thread, I'll still throw my $.02 in.
first WWDC is around the corner but I doubt if you'll see anyhting regarding the MB because it is so new. I also doubt if they'll mention a new coating technique with the black MBs. companies don't admit to mistakes, besides I haven't really heard of any problems with the black MBs (other then fingerprints but they're easily cleaned off).
Second and more importantly why did you want the Macbook. Was it because it was new and you wanted a faster computer (nothing wrong with that reason). If your satisfied with your iBook and you can wait, I suggest you do so.
I went from a 15" alu PowerBook to the Macbook and here's my reasoning. First form facter, I wanted a smaller laptop. Second was case durability, the plastic case is more durable then the MB. Third was speed, though not all of my apps are UB, so I'm seeing that some apps are faster and some are slower.
For your situation, the form factor is nearly the same, the case makeup is identical and that leaves the speed.
If you don't have a compelling reason then hold off, your bank account will thank you

  • Bootcamp Vista on low/mid-end MacBook ?

    Hi,
I plan to buy a MacBook this week-end and I would need just little bit of information about it. My mom (yeah) would like to run Vista on my macbook, so she can start working on it (she teaches windows/office) this summer before she buys a new computer and me, I wanted to buy the cheapest one (2.0ghz) and I waited for the GMA chip to be upgraded before I bought.
So my question is, can a low-end MacBook smoothly run Windows Vista and the newest Office via Bootcamp or should I pay a bit more for the 2.2ghz or buy 2gb of ram instead of 1 or both (2.2ghz + 2gb of ram) ? In addition, if I buy it with 1gb of ram, can I upgrade it later by buying 1gb of ram directly from apple or another retail store ? Can I install it myself or do I have to ship it to apple ? Sorry, I have limited experiences with macs and laptops
    Thanks in advance
    JT

I wouldn't buy memory from Apple, but that's because I can install it myself, and can troubleshoot computer problems (if the memory or machine were defective). That doesn't mean, however, that I should go around telling everyone that they should do it themselves.
Apple tells people this not me. That is why they give very good instruction for DIY and it doesn't void the warranty.
You can buy Ram guaranteed to work on a macbook cheaper than 700 dollars. The DIY instructions are pretty easy. Even if a person wasn't comfortable with DIY they could buy the RAM and have it installed by a technician for a lot less that 700 dollars. 4 GB RAM for 159 dollars, guaranteed to work in a Mac and then say a 100 dollars for a tech is 259 dollars. 400 dollar savings and done by a professional.
Telling people it is to hard for them to do is a pretty good scare tactic itself. A lot of people on this forum with no experience have used the *instructions provided by Apple* to install their RAM. I will continue to advise people to buy RAM elsewhere and use the instructions Apple supplies to install it themselves.
A lot of people come on here and see a statement like yours, saying unless you know a lot about computers and troubleshooting you better not try it, immediately panic think I have to be computer geek to replace my RAM so I better shell out the 700 dollars to get real Apple RAM.
Most people know their limitations and don't have to be told what they can or can't do.
The RAM I bought was "Certified to work on my Mac" and it didn't come from apple. It is the same kind they use just sold as a consumer product instead of OEM labeled.

  • Only small portion of messages import from 10.3.9 iBook to 10.4.6 macbook

I am attempting to migrate my mail files from the mail program on my old iBook G4 to my new macbook and only 410 of my 5193 inbox messages come over. I have tried saving the inbox to another mailbox and the same ones come over. Is there a limit?? Can I get around this?? Thanks-Mott
    macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
In particular, you may want to take a look at the following article (also referenced in that thread) to learn what you might have done before migrating to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON'T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
I don't know how Migration Assistant handles the conversion, but chances are that the following procedure will allow you to fix the problem (assuming this is a POP account). If you cannot follow it for some reason, or it doesn't work for you, post back with your observations:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn't need to have an .mbox extension.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    5. Move the mbox file out of INBOX.mbox and into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. This file contains all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger (maybe even some messages that had been deleted).
    6. Move any strangely-named Messages-XXXXXX folder to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or a re-indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn't work as expected. If you've been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
    7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox file only. Now, proceed as follows:
    8. Open Mail.
    9. The account's Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that's not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that's on the Desktop. Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move to the account's Inbox the messages that Mail failed to convert properly, and delete those that did get through and, hence, are duplicates now.
The following collection of AppleScripts has a Remove Duplicates script that can be useful for removing duplicate messages:
    http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Mail_Scripts.html
If all is well and you're not missing anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

  • Cannot read ibooks imported from iPad on macbook air

I can't read my ibooks imported from iPad on MacBook Air. Library is installed. how can I open the books for reading?

OOPS! I got it sorted out by installing from Brother CD (as distinct from download as tried previously). I hope I have not wasted anybody's time.

  • IBook G4 video out to MacBook video out

Anyone know of a port adaptor so I don't have to toss all my iBook vidya cables and buy all new stuff? The G4 video out port is smaller than the port on my current MacBook and there's nothing in the Apple Store. Customer service said I'd need a small adaptor from someone like Belkin but looking around has been really frustrating. Especially since the dude at Apple said he couldn't tell me how many pins the difference is.
EDIT: The iBook is a mini VGA 13 pin port and the MacBook is a mini DVI 32 pin port.

I tried the store and they told me to try Belkin. The short version is that I want to watch web content on my TV. With my G4, the output was thru a mini-VGA port. The port on my MacBook is a larger mini-DVI port so none of my G4 adaptors and cables work any more.
I don't want to spend a bunch of money on a MacBook to TV adaptor (they usually ship with a new machine but mine is second-hand) and replacing the other Monster cables I bought so I was looking for a cheap way to link my old mini-VGA stuff to the mini-DVI port on my MacBook. It would be a male/female type adaptor.

  • Can you sync ibooks from an iMac to MacBook Air with the same apple id?

Can you sync ibooks from an iMac to a macbook air with the same apple id?  Settings set to allow this.

If the ibooks were purchased from Apple, and download new purchases is selected in iBooks preferences, then yes.

  • Possible to swap ibook G4 dvd drive into macbook pro?

My unibody macbook pro's dvd drive has stopped working. Whenever i put in a dvd in, it just gurgles and tries to churn the disk to no avail. I was wondering if it were possible to harvest the dvd drive out of my old ibook g4 and put it into the macbook pro.

AFAIK, the drives are of a different height...thus that iBook drive won't fit.

  • IBook G4 migration to new MacBook Pro

We are replacing my wife's old iBook G4 (OS X 10.5.8 with Power PC processor) with a new MacBook Pro.  Some questions:
    1. Is migration of the her files (especially her MS Office files, Thunderbird email files, and Firefox bookmarks), compatible software, preferences and info from the old iBook to the new MacBook Pro a problem?
    2. Are there any software issues other than probable incompatibility from Power PC versions to Intel versions?
    3. Is migration something I can do at home (as I have from an older MacBook Pro to my new one: connect the two with an ethernet cable and choose "migrate") or should we spend the $99.00 and 2-3 days without a computer and let the Apple Store do it (because of concerns about the Power PC processor to the Intel processor)?
    4.  She's been using an old version of Extensis Suitcase (X1) as her font management program.  Is this a potential problem?  (FYI, I use Suitcase Fusion 2)
    5. The new computer will have Mountain Lion and I use Lion.  Are there significant differences between the two that we should be aware of in advance?
I realize that most of her old software won't be compatible, and, for example, I already have a multiple license version of MS Office 2011 to replace her old version of Office which I know is incompatible.  My greater concern again is the potential for any data loss (especially her MS Office files, Thunderbird email files, and Firefox bookmarks) if I do the migration instead of having Apple Store do it...and yes, I'll back up everything on her old computer in either case!
Thanks in advance for any replies, and I sincerely apologize for the long post!

  • IBook connects to 'net, but MacBook won't

I have an iBook G4 (wife's Mac) and a newer Macbook. Both connect to the 'net via a wireless router (D-link DIR-615). This morning, for no apparent reason, I suddenly was unable to connect to the web on my Macbook. The iBook connects with no problem. I tried restarting the Mac, the cable modem and the router, but that didn't work.
When I run diagnostics, it gives me a 'green light' for Airport, Aiport Settings, and Network Settings, but says the ISP failed. When I plug into the ethernet port from the router, it still doesn't work! The only way I can connect is if I unplug the router altogether and plug in the ethernet directly from the modem to the Macbook. Any tips??

No responses yet, so I'm just adding this info in case it helps someone figure out what my issue might be.
I brought my Mac to work and was able to connect to the wireless network w/ no problem. I'll take it home tonight to see if that someone resolved this mysterious issue, but I'm not counting on it...

  • How do I extract AppleWorks from my 'dead' iBook G4 to my Intel MacBook?...

I quite liked AppleWorks, it was good enough for me, little did I realise Macbooks don't come with a proper non-trial word processing facility - so I suppose Apple expect me to buy it, or the predecessor again.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Well yes, I have the Panther Install and Restore discs that came with my defunct iBook G4, and also Tiger discs I bought to upgrade the OS after fitting a new hard drive, the Intel Macbook will not accept the Panther discs, and I couldn't find Appleworks on them anyway - maybe the machine came with it and Sound Studio (the two things I use most!) 'bundled', it's an expensive luxury keeping a mac I tell you.

  • IBook coming to the end of its life

Kia Ora Guys and Gals of Apple discussions...
Well I think my ibook has now come to the end of its life, I would be running an application (maybe 2) and then the whole system freezes over, yup I can't even move the mouse...
So I have to go ctrl+command+power to reset the ibook and have to reset the smc every time this happens (take out battery sources and other stuff hold power for 15 secs, re attach blah blah blah) then zap the pram (wow so much stuff)
Now the system is SNAIL Slow, turned it on... I herd the infamous tone (doooong) went to a greyish sorta screen (looks like system software background) then the apple logo! But no spinner....
Anyone reckon its hard drive failure for sure?
Oh wait just my luck, kernal panic when I moved it slightly...
    So what do you think?

i just completed my end of life ibook g4 restore to life. i installed a 40g harddrive (that was dying issue) from http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Toshiba/MHW2040AT/.
and buy the tool set at $5-
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/TOOLKITMHD/. there are a lot of screws to remove and remember where they went!
there is a how to on the web-at
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iBook+G4+12-Inch+800+MHz-1.2+GHz+Hard+Drive+Replacem ent/166/1
i idif not do steps 24, 25 or 26, just pry the top case over that part. at step 30 be really careful when lifting top case off. make sure that the trackpad connector comes out of the socket without unglueing itself from the topcase. it is very very tricky to plug it back in. next, be careful with step 32 and 33. i left them attached and moved the top case up and taped it the screen, when you get to step 34 top shield, no need to take it off. just remove the screws from the lower left side and bend the shield up and out of the way to get to the hard drive below.  be sure to check that out before screwing everything back.  if you have an airport card, do not attach it until after loading all your software. mine gave me a kernel panic with airport card in.
this is typed from the newly resurrected ibook g4 with airport card!!

  • IBook/Powerbook superdrive used for macbook pro replacement part?

Can I use a superdrive from an ibook or powerbook as a replacement part for my macbook pro?

I doubt the iBook drives would fit as Apple tended to use slightly larger drives but out of an Aluminium PowerBook you might have some luck.

  • Synchronizing my old iBook G4 iCal to a Macbook

Yikes! I attempted to synch my old iBook with my new MacBook. The Assistant asked for a firewire connection - I complied- and then it said that I was not connecting to a computer running Max OS. What?
So I used an 8 gig flash drive to laboriously move some data. Now I need to sync my iCal. I have tried saving data to the flash but it will not work. I tried using my iPod to sync but no joy.
What do you wiser minds recommend?!

Received no help. Will look elsewhere.

  • High end macbook vs. black version. and a RAM question.

Is the $200.00 difference between the higher end white macbook vs. the black macbook due entirely to the larger hard drive on the black macbook? aside from the hard drive, tech spec wise they are identical. Or is there more to this?
Also, is the RAM on either the black or white macbook upgradeable manually? if so, is it easy to add?
    Thanks!

The RAM is very easy to upgrade. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303721

  • Connect iBook w/o display to MacBook?

My iBook is broken. And it's making me really sad
I posted a few weeks ago to see if anyone had any suggestions, but so far no responses and nothing I've tried has worked. I'm pretty sure it's something with the display because the fan noise happens but no image comes up. I've followed the instructions and reset the parameter RAM and PMU. It'll turn on for a minute, then turn off again. I have a feeling something might be loose on the inside but I'm not comfortable opening it up myself and tinkering around.
In any case, I just got back to the US after being overseas for 4 months only to discover there's no Apple Store in SC. So the visit to get it fixed is going to have to wait a little longer.
In the meantime, I have a MacBook. Is there anyway to connect the two and use the MacBook as a screen to access what's in the iBook? I might be naive and that may be the stupidest question in the world, but at this point, I figured it was worth a shot.
    Any help/advice/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Do both computers have to be off? Nothing happens when I have my MacBook turned on and try holding T and turning on the iBook. The fan noise is the only thing that's happening.
