IBook G4 wireless

Ok so the wireless is set up at one house and working fine yet at the other house it gets onto the connection but not the internet.
The network system settings is telling me that the airport has a self-assigned IP adress and may not be able to connect to the internet. Any help?

Yes I can see the wireless in the dropdown menu I
even have the name of it and the signal (full)
displaed on the top toolbar.
So basicall my computer finds and reads the wireless
but there is something stopping the two sending
information and thus the ip adress instead of the
self-assigned one which is stopping me from going on
the internet. Am I right?, and is there any wy to fix
this?
Of course there is a way to make a wireless network
to work.
Is the IP address of your Mac obtained via DHCP?
Can you access your AEBS with "AirPort Admin Utility"?
If yes, could you tell us how it is actually configured?
If not, could you unplug your AEBS from the power supply,
wait 30" and plug it on again. Does this let your Mac get a
correct IP address?
I also advise you to read this well written document:

  • Ibook and wireless internet

I have an ibook G4, 466, that I use when the wife and I are out doing our RV thing. I would like to get away from the dial up modem and go to wireless.
However, I have been told that I can not use wireless internet with the iBook because the wireless internet requires some hardware to be installed.
Is anyone using the off the shelf ibook and wireless internet?
Or does anyone know what I need to do to start using wireless?
    Thanks

These links had them available as of yesterday. They do list them as out of stock sometimes, but have been able to restock them. They are getting rarer and more expensive all the time, so the sooner you buy, the better.
I had one AirPort card conk out on me, so I recommend paying the $20 or $30 more for a new one. I would not buy a used one if I could avoid it.
    Good luck. Wireless is wonderful.

  • Transferring file pc laptop - ibook via wireless

    Hi,
I need to transfer files from my ibook to a win laptop.
1)I used a flash drive but got damaged files.
    2)Os 9 can't see my ipod nano!
I've got an airport 802.11b on my ibook and an intel 802.11b/g on the asus win laptop. Can I transfer files through wireless? How?I'm a newbie of os 9
    tnks a lot

A1: Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the card in question (someone else may be able to provide you with exact information). Generally speaking however, special Mac driver software is needed for Ethernet cards.
A2: There are some limitations regarding Mac OS 10.4 and certain older systems. Without going into details, you may not be able to use all machines as servers, but it is usually possible to create a connection that will allow files to be transferred.
A3: Yes, a direct connection, typically (depending upon the machines involved), requires a crossover cable. A connection via a hub or a switch (router) will use normal cables.
For additional information, have a look here and here.
There are a couple of alternative solutions. Pro primo, you could try a wireless connection to your existing network. This web page could perhaps be of interest. Secondly, a CompactFlash card (or another flash card) used with an inexpensive PC Card adapter (see, for example, here) would let you carry out the transfers.

  • IBook losing wireless connection intermittently

System is an iBook Dual USB that was purchased new a few years ago along with the original Airport card.
Just yesterday, the machine started intermittently losing connection to my access point (a belkin model) which had caused no problems for over a year.
Symptom is that all the "bars" go grey within a couple of minutes of boot, then sometimes come back to all black. But then again, sometimes it never comes back. In the Networks panel in System prefs, it shows airport as on, but not connected to a network.
The only other notable event, was that I loaded the two security updates for 2007 yesterday before the trouble started.
Removed and reseated the airport card a couple of times. Apple Hardware diagnostics show no problems even when run looping for over an hour. Ran disk utility to fix all permissions.
Per some webpostings, it was suggested that some system updates can mess up some .plist files related to networking -- Have deleted those, and still suffering from the same problem.
Other computers in the household have no problems connecting to the wireless access point, so the problem is localized to the iBook.
How do I know if I have a hardware problem (bad card), or some software corruption that is mimicing a hardware problem ?
    Thanks,
    Roger

  • Trying to get my Ibook G4 wireless

Hi I have an ibook g4 and im trying to make it wireless. Ive been readying and it says something about and airport extreme card. Is this right? I don't want to buy it and find out that its wrong. Furthermore is it easy to install? Any information would be a big helps. Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can buy an AirPort Extreme card directly from Apple for about $49 US. I did this for my iBook G4, and the card is very easy to install. The main thing is to be sure you plug it all the way in and also plug the antenna all the way in. DIY instructions will come with it. If you buy directly from Apple, you can make sure that it will be the correct one for your iBook.
    Good luck!

  • Airport Extreme works fine with ibook and wireless PC on WPA, but not Wii

    Hi;
I just got an Airport Extreme last week. Took me a while to get everything figured out, but I got my ibook as well as my wife's ibook and her PC to connect wirelessly, using WPA encryption. We have a TiVo (using the "official" TiVo USB transceiver)and a Nintendo Wii that I can't get to connect though. Both see the network and try to connect, but after a connection attempt they come back with an error message that the network can't be found.
When I change to WEP encryption, the connections work just fine. I really want to stick with WPA, though, as there are a bunch of wireless networks around me and I obviously don't want anyone else to connect to my network. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks in advance.

At first we could plug the Dell in directly but that was before setting up the AX. Now that the AX works the Dell cannnot connect even wired. (It says that it's connected but it cannot find server when you try to open a webpage). Could this be a problem that the moden cannot go between Mac & windows?
Most modems tend to "remember" the last device connected to it, so it's important to do a complete power-down/power-up when switching devices. It's possible that your modem did this when you attempted to connect the PC directly. My purpose of having you connect the PC directly was to verify that it can access the Internet with a wired connection and that it's wireless setting needs to be troubleshot further.
The power recycle process should be something like the following:
    - Power-off the modem & AX; If possible, leave the modem off overnight.
    - Power-on the modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.

If the iBook doesn't already have one, you need an original AirPort Card.

  • IBook connects wirelessly only

I have an older iBook and also and older airport base station model M8440. My iBook connects to the internet through airport but I have a second computer which is a pc. It the airport base station and connects but its not a strong enough connection to power the internet. I took the pc down to the library since I know there wifi works and the pc get the internet there no problem so I know its not the computer. When I get home same old thing happens where it connects but doesn't get a signal. I have spent hours looking for different updates to get but there isn't any available for an old g4 with a 10.4.11 osx. Please help with any suggestions that might help solve my problem.

Or you can assign a static IP address on the computer it self.
If it is a MAC computer then click on APPLE icon. Go to system preferences. Click on Network and select Ethernet. Go to Advanced settings and go to TCP/IP settings. Change the configuration to Manual and assign a static IP address to the computer.
If it is windows computer then open Network connections. Right click on Local area connection/ wireless network connection and go to properties. Click on Internet protocol TCP/IP properties. Assign a static IP address.

  • Making my iBook G3 wireless

    Here's what I have:
iBook G3 (dual USB plus Firewire)
    800MHz
    128MB RAM built in
30GB hard drive, partitioned (roughly 10GB on startup drive)
    no Airport card
It's running OS X 10.3.9 but I will install Tiger as soon as I increase the memory with a 512MB stick. FYI, Tiger was previously on a desktop iMac that has been completely wiped and donated, and I have the full retail set of discs.
Forgive the "I should know this" question --
How do I find out what RAM stick to order? When I go online, shops that sell RAM show the iBook G3 with 600MHz -- will one of those work, or do I need one that says 800MHz? How many pins should the stick have?
Also, I've seen online sources for "original" Airport cards for the iBook G3. Can I trust that they are, in fact, compatible? Or should I go with a USB wireless dongle thingy? I'm looking for a not-too-expensive option, since making the iBook wireless is not a necessity -- I just want another Internet-capable Mac for use when the iMac is tied up.
    Thanks for your suggestions!

    It takes a 144-pin 3.3 V, PC100 or PC133 compliant, 1.25 inch SDRAM SO-DIMM.

  • IBook G4- Wireless Connection Faulty

It connects, then it disconnects, then reconnects, etc. etc.
I wanted to buy the F5D7050 Belkin USB Wireless but it says it is only Windows compatable. I really want to end this whole faulty wireless thing. It's driving me insane. I almost threw my laptop in class I was getting so frustrated with losing connection. I would take it into Mac but they want me to pay almost 200 dollars to get it fixed. I'd rather get a new laptop then spend 200 to fix the wireless on a laptop I'll replace in a year or two.

I use that exact Belkin wireless device on my iMac, my Dell and my Linux and it works fine on all of them. It is not supported for Mac, but they released a mac driver for it you can download online. That's enough support for me
However, what is the problem with your airport wireless? Intermittent would likely mean interruption in the signal.
Is the internet service wireless from your ISP?
If not, then where is the location of the wireless router you are using to have a wireless connection, in relation to where you are using the laptop? Are there devices such as a microwave, cordless phones, wireless mouse or keyboard base stations, large pieces of metal exposed or hidden in the walls, etc. How far away is the router from your laptop?
    What brand is it?
How many devices are sharing the wireless at the same time?
Did it ever used to work to your standards?
    Are your software updates current?
    Have you repaired permissions lately?
Have you added RAM or replaced your keyboard lately?

  • IBook G3 Wireless

    Hi.
I had recently purchased an iBook G3, for use as a student. I knew that it didn't come with an Airport card, but I didn't know it would be difficult to find the right card.
What is a good deal for a wifi card, for an iBook G3.
Also-- i know that Mac advertises you do not need antivirus software, but is this reallly true? This is my first mac. I just don't think its a good idea to browse the internet without security software, but then again, myabe things are different on a mac.
    Lemme know what you think.

  • HELP ibook g3 OSX 10.2.8 no longer detects airport express wireless network

my ibook G3 OSX 10.2.8, airport admin utility software 3.1.1 no longer can detect the airport express wireless network (powerbook G4, OSX 10.4.11, airport admin utility 4.2; airport express, WEP protected, to DSL modem). i just installed an ipod driver update on the ibook, and wireless networking went down on restart. any help greatly appreciated!

    you name it : com.apple.airport.adminutility.plist
delete it and do as advised.
This isn't harmful, because it is only a preference list, so it will be created brandnew as soon as you re-setup the Airport stuff.
Mac OS X ( especially Jaguar ) has a tendency to corrupt some plists out of the blue, it is more or less harmless and can be fixed with recreating them plus permissions-repair.
Hint : repair permissions more than one time, it ALWAYS finds something to fix in Jaguar.
You cannot destroy something with these actions, because it is Unix maintance so usual routines.
A tool like cocktail or Onyx ( google them, onyx is freeware ) can help you run such ( and more ) routines on a scheduled base.
Always remember that OS X is no longer "the Mac OS", it is Unix with a nice Desktop, the critical things run hidden in the background, so it has to be treated like any Unix/Linux sort of OS, even if from the outside everything looks nice and kosher..
    Best wishes from Germany

  • Bridging from wireless iBook connection to xbox 360

I was wondering if anyone might have any advice for me.
I am currently trying to allow my xbox 360 to share my iBook's wireless by bridging it through the iBook's ethernet jack.
When running the xbox live set up I have been able to get the IP address confirmed, the DNS as well, however the MTU just fails.
My iBook is set at 1500, the minimum the xbox wants is 1364, my wireless router is set at 1500. Any ideas? Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Connect broken ibook to new macbook pro for data recovery

Greetings all. I'm a long time mac user but this is my first post on the forums. Hope you folks can help me out.
I want to transfer information from my old ibook g4 (running OS 10.5.?) to my new MacBook Pro (OS 10.6.3). The catch is the ibook's monitor is not working, but the hard drive is. Also I don't have a firewire cable to connect the 2 computes or (option 2) a cable that would allow me to connect the ibook to an external monitor. In order to get either of those cables I will have to find them online as the closest store is 2.5 hours away.
As far as I can tell the ibook's wireless is still working but I don't think sharing is turned on...
Can any of you think of a way I could make a wireless network btw the computers? I know the ibooks passwords etc...is there any way I can get in to the ibook and turn sharing on without having use of its monitor?
Any ideas would be really helpful. Mac support said there is no way...but common I've done amazing things with my Mac there must be a way!
Here's how this all came about:
Last Monday my husband was using my sacred ibook G4, which has given me 6 years of flawless service and was continuing to work perfect until this day. He picked it up to move it to the living room and accidentally dropped it. It landed, open and running, on one of it's hinges, instantly smashing it.
After taking the ibook apart and assessing the damage we decided the best option was replacement hence my brand new Macbook pro.
There is no visible damage to the ibooks lcd screen, but somewhere in the components is/are lose connections preventing the monitor from working. The frame on the side where the power cable plugs in, at the monitors hinge, broke and damaged a green wire connected to the screen.
Thanks for your consideration folks. I'd sure like to get the info off the ibook. PS my husband feels terrible about what happened but on the plus side hello new laptop!

    bug,
Apparently the transfer stopped part way through.
Hmm that doesn't make a lot of sense unless....
on the now exposed area, touches the frame the external monitor will stop working.
So you must absolutely prevent that from happening..
the external monitor will stop working.
You're probably dragging the graphics chip down when that happens or causing a logic board power spike (probably negative) that crashes that chip or worse the CPU. What can happen if that keeps on is that a tiny fuse that's about a 1/32" wide and 1/8" long can blow on the logic board. It's in the inverter driver circuit. That will require someone to perform a microsolder repair. The other thing that could happen is that the inverter driver could blow up and that would be fatal afa the internal display is concerned.
OK so I'm a little confused here:
able to confirm that when plugged into a monitor the computer still works.
.. the ibook monitor still powers up do you think it may be possible to repair the current monitor?..Computer starts up fine, monitor powers up as well but does not display any images other than blue blank screen
So the computer was working and now it's not?
I think you should stop trying to run the computer with that inverter cable damaged. If you can't affect a repair you should probably unplug the inverter cable. The bottom would have to come off as well as the lower shield.
I happen to have a 14" 1.42 GHz iBook taken apart and can send you pictures of the position of that cable's socket if you email me. (I'm attempting a PMU swap with this 1.42).
I'd like to get my info back
So with that cable disconnected you'd need to see if the iBook will go into target mode.
If not then I'd disconnect the LVDS cable and try it w/ the external monitor. Now that's going to require that the upper case come off as well as the upper shield. There are many gottchas to doing this, the worst of which is damaging the power button socket on the logic board.
Ultimately you might have to pull the hard drive and use an external case/USB adapter to recover that info.
they ran into problems during the transfer but they couldn't explain what happened
    "they" seem a bit inept!

  • Share two powerbooks wirelessly?

this may sound complicated, but really it is simple. i have one powerbook at one end of the house. airport extreme card.
another powerbook at the other end of the house. airport extreme card. this powerbook is hardwired to an ethernet connection. In addition, this powerbook can pick up my neighbor's wireless network. The other powerbook is within wireless range of this powerbook, but not my neighbor's wireless network.
I want to be able to hard-wire this computer to my ethernet and somehow set up a wireless network between my powerbooks so that the other powerbook is online wirelessly. do i have to buy more equipment, or can I use this powerbook to share my ethernet wirelessly to the other powerbook.

Yes you can do this - I have done wireless into PowerBook 17 then share wire to iBook without Wireless - should work equally well in the other direction. it might take you a few tries to get it right - but basically you turn on sharing on the computer that has the connection to the outside world - then access that connection from the computer that does not have the outside connection. one thing to keep in mind is that the computer providing the sharing becomes a DHCP server and there is no simple way to change the addressing used by that computer so the second computer must be set to be a DHCP client.
Still with the prices of wireless routers these days or the added benefits of Airport Express you might consider spending a few $.
