Ibook G4 won't display my hard drive

My Ibook G4 sometimes crashes and won't then show my Hard drive. I replaced the drive about three weeks ago and this fixed the problem for about three days. I replaced the cable between the hard drive and the logic board last week and this seemed to fix the problem properly. Unfortunately a few days ago, my system crashed again and my hard drive disappeared. After a few hours of restarting, I could see the hard drive and began a zero data to try and fix it. I'm guessing it might be corrupted?
After clearing the drive, I tried to reinstall my software but again, I couldn't see it. Eventually it appeared after a few re boots but it wouldn't then let me install.
Any ideas what I should do next? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm tearing my hair out. To para phrase:
I have swapped my hard drive for a new one
I have reinstalled Leopard
I have swapped the cable between the hard drive and the logic board
I did a hardware test which was all clear
I tried to do my tax return
My system crashed
I zeroed my hard drive
I tried to reinstall Leopard
Many thanks

That's what I feared. I have tried the solutions on this site http://www.coreyarnold.org/ibook/ and have found my hard drive again. I'm now trying to re-install my software starting with my initial install disks on 10.3.7.
Fingers crossed this works or does something

  • Ibook g4 won't boot, but hard drive seems fine

    I have a ibook g4,800mhz. osx 10.4.8
On start up i get the folder & question mark. I have tried the following.
    1) i booted with an os install disk. disk utilities reported the drive was ok it but couldn't see a disk partition so disk first aid had nothing to do.
    2) next i ran disk warrior which had the same probably, it could see the hard drive, reported that the drive was functioning, but saw no partition.
    3) finally i gave up and reformatted the disk, and re installed an os. this worked for 48 hours at which time the problem came back.
    4) i can put the laptop in firewire mode connect it to a desktop and access the hard drive. I can format the disk using apple disk tools, i can install an new os, but after all this it still won't boot from the internal hd.
    5) I reset the pram. also tried starting up with the option key down .. no hard drive is visible when i do this.
So the hard drive seems to work ok. Two different disk utilities see the hard drive and think its functioning ok. OSx installer runs without complaint, but the &$%! won't boot from the hd.
    Anybody got any suggestions?

...this worked for 48 hours at which time the problem came back...
This is the time period that I was commenting on. If something was used during that time that corrupted the OS, it would cause the situation you are in.
If everything is perfect with the OS then something is wrong with the hard drive or the motherboard's interface to the hard drive.

This is a directory issue that Disk Utility cannot fix. Although it manifests itself as a software issue sometimes it may be hardware based. See DiskUtility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing avolume http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1901?viewlocale=en_US". You can try using a utility like TechTool Pro, Drive Genius or Disk Warrior to repair and replace the directory. Another option would be to use the Archive and Install feature to reinstall. If the problem returns after correction you may have a failing or failed HDD.

Hi, since i put some mp4 video or DVD files on my external hard drives final cut prox won't recognize my hard drives, i move all the video files and the problem still exist. somebody have the solution

Did the back and forth between PC and Mac file systems screw up my files somehow?
Yes. Unfortunately the move has almost certainly caused the loss of the resource data that would have been (invisibly) attached to those files.
By adding a specific .mov extension after the fact you will have helped the Mac correctly identify the file type / asscoiations but also significantly you will have physically changed the filename eg from "clip" to "clip.mov". This means that when you come to reconnect the media in FCP , then FCP will be looking for files that no longer exist at the given path eg when specifically looking for our example clip called "clip" of course it won't find it.
Try this as a test... first remove the ".mov" extension from one or more of the clips, select those clips and press Cmd-Opt-I to open an Info window for the selection. You'll see an "Open with:" popup and in that popup you should choose QuickTime Player (if its a Unix Executable then it will initially list Terminal as the appropriate app, you have to choose Other... then in the open dialog choose Enable > All Applications and then navigate to and select the Quicktime Player app as the appropriate app). After you've done that restart FCP and see if you can now reconnect to those clips.

  • Ibook won't recognize external hard drive

I have a ibook G3 with OS 10.2.8 and a 20G hard drive. I have used up all of my hard drive, and I need to expand my memory, so I bought a Western Digital 120GB USB drive. When I connected it the disk would spin but would not mount on my desktop or in my finder. I returned it, thinking it was the drive, and got a SimpleTech 60G drive. I connected it, but although the disk is spinning it will not mount either. The disk is not showing up in disk utility or on my desktop. It is showing up in my system profiler.
I can get an external power source for the one I have (it is USB bus powered), but I don't think that is the problem, becasue the WD drive had a external power source and it did the same thing.
    What should I do?

Hi, Erin. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Start up from your OS X Install CD and see if the drive is seen in Disk Utility from there. If so, try formatting the drive to Mac OS HFS+ with the Disk Utility on the Install CD.

  • Time Machine Won't Recognize External Hard Drive

    Hi there,
My father has a 2009 iMac running Mac OS X 10.8.3. Recently, Time Machine stopped recognizing his external Maxtor OneTouch backup hard drive.
I've tried the whole litany of ideas and tips listed in this forum and other websites:
Rebooting both the desktop and the external hard drive
    Changing USB ports
Checking Disk Utility (won't even display)
Can you offer any solutions? He hasn't had an issue before, so it seems to be an isolated incident. This desktop is for his business, so it's very important for the files to be backed up.
    Thanks.
Update: After submitting this, I received a dialogue box that said the computer cannot read the external hard drive.

If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Boot into Recovery and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the System Management Controller
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • Migrating old ibook's files on an external hard drive on to new iBook

I have an old white iBook G3 500 with a power adapter connector problem. Since I can no longer plug in the power adapter I transferred all of the old iBook's files to a bootable external firewire hard drive using the program Super Duper, which copies all files including system and hidden files. I then connected the hard drive to a G4 tower and booted it from the external drive. All of my files and applications worked fine.
Today I received a brand new iBook 14 Inch G4 1.42 GHz. When I start it up I would like to transfer all of the files and applications from the external drive. Can I just connect the external drive and tell the new iBook to transfer all of the files?
I have used the set up assistant once or twice before using firewire target mode, but because I use it so seldomly I want to make sure this was a proper way to migrate the data and applications from my old machine.
    iBook 14 Inch G4 1.42 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Can I just connect the external drive and tell the new iBook to transfer all of the files?
Yes, assuming the external drive is a bootable clone. If it won't boot the old iBook, then the clone needs to be redone in such a way to make it bootable. It probably won't boot the new iBook unless it has 10.4.4 on it.

  • No display after hard drive replacement

I'm working on an Intel Core 2 Duo iMac (late 2006) that sustained a bit of a fall (enough to crack the corner of the front bezel and kill the hard drive).
While diagnosing the problem, I could successfully boot the computer from an OS X disc, or even from my homebrew Triage drive (just Snow Leopard loaded with utilities) with no problems. I ran a full diagnostic test with Tech Tool Pro to ensure the SDRAM and Video RAM weren't causing any issues. Apple and 3rd party disc utilities all reported hardware errors from the hard drive if I attempted any kind of recovery though. So I replaced the internal drive per instructions in an online tutorial, being very careful not to cause any ESD damage during the process.
I ensured that every cable was securely connected and everything was back in its right place, and tried to power on... There was no chime, and no display (even if connected to a known good external), but the hard drive, fans, and optical drive all spin up and the power light still comes on.
I have tried resetting the System Management Controller, along with the PRAM/NVRAM. I've read and seen some articles about resetting the Power Management Unit on some other models, but I'm not sure that my model makes that an option or not. Oh, and I even removed the drive, installed OS 10.6, and reconnected it just in case it was an issue with recognizing that the drive was useable.
Any ideas on how I could get this running again without a trip to the genius bar and a shot to the wallet?

Wow... I guess there must have been some connection loose somewhere. I had checked to make sure every cable was secured several times already, but after your last question I decided to do it again, as well as disconnect/reconnect the two cables that run to the lcd, and the SATA power connector (the end that seems like it shouldn't even be removed from the motherboard, which I think was actually a bad idea) just in case I had managed to loosen it.
I also pulled a piece of black tape off of the 3 diagnostic LEDs that I had heard of, but couldn't seem to find, to see what they might be able to tell me... but it looks like I won't need them now!
Problem solved. Thanks Ralph! Lesson learned: don't put too much trust in my own ability to reconnect everything properly, no matter how careful I was or how many times I've done it before.

  • Computer won't start from hard drive or CD, and won't perform system recovery.

I have an HP Pavilion g7-1314nr. Yesterday it froze and I held down the power button to turn it off. After turning it back on, it started a disk check. I turned it off during the disk check, and upon trying to boot it back up, it told me booting failed and to press CTRL-ALT-DELETE to try again. After multiple attempts, it stopped displaying this message.  Under system diagnostics, I ran a boot test, and it failed. Attempting a system recovery brings up the start-up windows logo, and then a black screen with an enlarged cursor. This morning, I inserted a recovery disk and told it to boot from internal CD/DVD drive. Like system recovery, it brings the Windows logo, and then a black screen with an enlarged cursor. My computer is incapable of booting from either the hard drive or a CD. What do I do?

    Hi @TeridaxXD001 ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion g7-1314nr Notebook and issues with Windows 7 and starting up.  I recommend to restore the BIOS defaults. You could restore the BIOS with this document selecting the reloading the BIOS default settings which should resolve the fan issue.
Here is a link to computer won't start for Windows 7. There is a section on getting past the HP Logo screen.
If that does not help at the end of the document it shows you to do a hardware test.
Please note remove any and all USB devices before troubleshooting. Disconnect all non-essential devices
    Hope this helps you out.
    Thanks.

  • S10-2 Won't boot from hard drive

I have an S10-2 2957 that won't boot from the internal hard drive. The one key function doesn’t work either. After the splash comes up and the BIOS runs all that is displayed is a flashing cursor. If I boot from an external source (USB CD) I can see the hard drive and all files are intact. I have tried removing the battery and power supply, holding the power key for 30 seconds before powering the unit back up to no avail. I’m thinking that either the boot sector is corrupt or the first partition is not active. Any ideas?

  • Desktop or Disk Utility won't show External Hard Drives

The Desktop or Disk Utility won't show  2 of my old external hard drives and so they are currently unsusable. My computer however recognise other external drives.
320GB Western Digital MyBook Premium model number: WD3200D032-000
500 GB Western Digital MyBook Premium model number: WD5000E032
I have same issues both of these external drives.
The blue circle lights come on so power is getting to it.
Tried 2 USB cables, one I know for sure is working - Nothing.
    I am using Lion 10.7.4 on a mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro
All efforts to help much appreciated

No they haven't worked on this computer before. I using them on my old MacBook Pro (a computer which is no longer working)  which ran Snow Leopard.
The 500GB drive  "stopped working" with that old MBP too
But the 320GB drive was always working with old MBP if I remember correctly.
    Cheers

  • Why won't my new hard drive mount on my new MacBook Pro but will mount on my old MacBook Pro

I bought a new MacBook Pro to replace an older MacBook Pro.   I also bought a new Toshiba 1T portable hardrive to backup my new computer.   The Toshiba hard drive will not mount on the new computer, but it will mount on my old computer.
However, I have two other portable hard drives (320 MB and 500 MB) that do mount on the new computer.   I am puzzled as to why the new MBP will not display my Toshiba 1T portable HD.
    Any ideas?

The only way I could get my Toshiba 1 TB USB 3.0 drive to work was to buy this cable from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005M0ICG2/ref=oh_o05_s00_i00_details
I tried a Kindle cable, I also ordered a thick data / power cable and it would not work. So I tried this dual USB cable and my drive is working great now.
You may be able to find it else were but the bottom line is you have to use both USB ports on your MacBook in order for this drive to work. I'm using a late 2011 MacBook Pro.

  • Time capsule won't recognise external hard drive, even when formatted correctly and connected to a powered USB hub

    Hey
i have an apple time capsule (not the very latest one, but the one before that) and i am trying to connect my 1.5TB toshiba hard drive to it. i understand that it needs to be powered, so i purchased a usb hub ("usb hub man" by Gadget Geek) and bought an adapter to power it.
The hard drive won't show up in finder or disk utility, however i can see it in airport utility.
it is formatted correctly - Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) and works perfectly fine from my macbook pro usb port.
Also, when i connect a smaller hard drive to the hub (16GB) that shows up in finder as normal.
so it seems that everything is perfectly fine, however this 1.5TB hard drive just wont show up in finder.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this is the case? my guesses are that i need to get a better quality usb hub, or that i might have to get a powered hard drive altogether rather than trying to power it with the hub.
    Thanks

The hard drive won't show up in finder or disk utility, however i can see it in airport utility.
You would not expect it to show up in disk utility .. it does not work on network drives.
Finder may or may not be able to see it.
If the airport utility is showing the drive you have some possibility.
Did you GUID partition the drive .. or is it still MBR.. ie if it was originally formatted for PC it will be MBR and won't work.. so put it on the Mac again and change the GUID partition.. I would also set a smaller partition size.. the internal drive of the TC is partitioned though you cannot see them.. put a first partition less than 1TB and see how it goes.
In finder.. don't forget ML has issues with network drive.. make sure you tick all the extras in finder preferences.. and if the drive won't mount try to do it manually.. go .. connect to server.
AFP://TCname or TCIPaddress.. where you use the actual name or IP.
Also is the power supply for the hub at least 2A preferably more.. so the hub is powered but the disk is not powered??

  • Time Capsule won't recognize External Hard Drive?

Ok so I have a 1 TB Time Capsule that I previously had a 1 TB G-Drive attached to store excess data, movies, ect. I needed more space so I purchesed a 6TB G-Drive, connected it to my Mac Book Pro and coppied all the information to it from my other two 1TB external hard drives. Then I connected it to my Time Capsule. However here is the the problem I can't locate the hard drive throught the Time Capsule. If I connect it directly to my Mac Book Pro I it works just fine but no such luck finding it when it is connected to my Time Capsule? While connected to my Mac Book Pro I checked Disk Utility and it is formated with OS Extended but not (Journaled). Does that matter and if so how can I format it without dumping the info on it as it took 10 hours to load it the first time. Please help.

Apple recommends that the drive should be formatted in Mac OS Exended (Journaled) when it is connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule, or AirPort Extreme, so that might be an issue here.
Another issue might be that the USB port on the Time Capsule is borderline as far as its ability to supply adequate power for a hard drive....even if the hard drive has its own separate power supply.
See if you can locate the drive as follows:
Click anywhere on the open Desktop to display the Finder menus at the top of the screen
Click the Go menu, then click Network
If the Time Capsule icon appears, double click on it and a folder representing your hard drive will appear if the format is being read
(You may need to click Connect As the first time that you do this and enter the Time Capsule device password)
Double click the folder representing the hard drive and it will mount on the desktop
If the folder for the hard drive does not appear, then the formatting issue or power issue may be at work here. Try a powered USB hub to see if that will allow the drive to be displayed in the Finder.
If still no luck, the only other thing that I can think of is that you will need to re-format the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  That means moving all the data on the drive to another storage area, formatting the drive using Disk Utility and then transferring the data back on to the drive.
Unfortunately, there are no guarantees that this will work either, but I know of nothing else to try.
Maybe another user has another idea.
