Ibook G4 won't recognise Combo drive

Hi there
I have an iBook G4 12" 800Mhz , when I bought it off ebay it arrived with an issue - the computer doesnt see the combo drive, dvds don't mount, Apple dvd player app gives an error message saying it kind find the drive to play dvds.
I have since taken the ibook apart and tried another combo drive and super drive but with the same results, I thought it could be the flex cable so tried that but again same result. I'm really confused now, am I missing something? do I need to reset Vram etc ? could there be a problem with the logic board?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm stumped
Troy

Hey,
I have had the same problem with three iBook G4's. It is not hardware, it is your software. Some how when you download a font or such off of the internet it interferes with a setting on your computer that has to be reset. But I do not know how to change the setting back to recognize DVD's except to backup up you hard drive and reinstall your panther or tiger software. This is what I have done and it fixes the drive, and you are able to play DVD's again.

  • Ibook won't boot, won't recognise hard drive, PRAM reset etc. Help?

Hi, I'm trying to repair my brother's iBook with limited knowledge. I'm not sure whether it's a G3 or G4 but it was made in 2001, has 2 usb's and a firewire, is white (slightly translucent) and has a 12" screen.
It started having problems starting up so he copied all his important files, just in time as now it won't work at all.
It starts up but just comes up with the ?/folder icon flashing. The hard drive starts "ticking" like an old clock as soon as the power button is pressed, as if it's stuck.
I've tried starting from the 10.3 install CD, this works at first but can't see a hard drive for installation, the same goes for disk utility from the install disk, there's no disk shown to repair.
I've reset the PRAM, PMU and pressed command, ctrl, alt(or shift?) and the power button.
I've started in "safe" mode but it won't get past the grey screen with apple icon.
I've started with alt pressed, this showed an OSX hard drive startup disk ok but would not boot it, it showed the grey screen again with the Apple logo, on one occasion this changed to a "No Entry" sign, a circle with a line through, weird. It has OS9 on here too but that didn't show at all.
After I drove it from his house (100 miles of vibrations) it started up straight away but froze (again with the ticking sound) after about 10 mins when accessing a file. When it started I had to reset the year and time which had changed to 1976, this is why I reset the PRAM. Is there a PRAM battery on these machines that can be changed? Could that be the problem?
On one occasion I held the eject key down at startup after having problems getting it out, the screen showed lots of numbers and something saying "panic: we are hanging here" very weird!
I've pressed down on the case on the left below the keyboard.
The battery seems to hold plenty of charge.
Sorry this is so long but I wanted to give as much detail as possible. I've tried everything I can think of & have read about without spending cash or taking it apart. I think the HD may have had it. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    James

    James,
No need to apologize for the length. That helps a lot. You can tell the model, speed and size by lifting the keyboard (two tabs outboard of the F1 and F11 keys, make sure it's unlocked - that tiny sloted head between F5 and F6)
There'll be a bar coded sticker there.
    However I think it's a 500-900 G3.
It starts up but just comes up with the ?/folder icon flashing. The hard drive starts "ticking" like an old clock ..
That's classic for a bad hard drive.
When it started I had to reset the year and time which had changed to 1976, this is why I reset the PRAM.
That happens when the battery is out with no power plug for longer than a few minutes.
Is there a PRAM battery on these machines that can be changed? Could that be the problem?
No there is no PRAM battery in an iBook. There is a super cap that allows a short time so you can change the battery.
the screen showed lots of numbers and something saying "panic: we are hanging here" very weird!
    Yes that's a kernel panic.
So it boots from the CD but needs a new hard drive.

  • IBook G3 won't boot hard drive

    Hello guys.
Recently I got a whole slew of iBook G3s, broken and new, which I will eventually fix and sell (probably keep one) but I am still in the process of fixing them and have a few questions.
I have this hard drive that I'm almost certain works (I can install tiger on it without it crashing) but it refuses to boot to tiger. I know it's not the iBook itself because I have a different hard drive that boots great, even in other iBooks too. I'm figuring the mbr config is jacked up, and ive already tried option apple pr and reset nv ram, reset defaults, and so forth in the firmware. How do I make this darn thing boot? And yes, I have tried to boot directly from the cd, but when it restarts it just sits there with the two faced mac face and the blinking question mark. I bet I'm going to have to do some magic in the OF, but I don't know what to type, so yeah...
    Thanks.

    But you said:
+I'm trying to boot from the OS X Tiger CD, and I know there's nothing wrong with it because I've done a full install on another hard drive and it was fine.+
Are you saying it did boot off the CD and install, but now it won't boot off the CD?
By the way, Tiger normally comes on a DVD. There are a few copies on CD out there, but they are relatively rare. Is your copy of Tiger on CD or DVD? Have you used a retail copy of Tiger for the installation? If you used an Tiger install disc from another Mac, that may not work on the iBook.

  • IBook will NOT boot from Combo Drive

    Hi all,
I'm trying to boot from my Tiger install DVD using the usual method - holding down "C" while pressing the power key. The DVD drive never even spins up. All I get is a gray screen with the apple - no spinning bars.
This occurred after the latest security update trashed all logins on the machine (G4 iBook, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB HD, 10.4.9) Immediately after entering a user password, loginwindow would crash, followed by mdimport, followed by crashserver I could briefly boot using command-S, but that stopped working (blue screen).
I then booted of the Tiger DVD, ran Disk Utility, Hardware Profiler, and used terminal to do "nvram boot-args="-v". Disk utility showed no permission or disk problems, and the profiler showed everything was there that was supposed to be there.
Next, I did an archive-and-install. The Tiger DVD passed its verification, the installation appeared to proceed normally, the system rebooted at the end, and up came the gray screen.
All subsequent boots only came up as far as the gray screen. I reset the parameter ram (alt-command-p-r-power), waiting for three beeps. I then tried to boot off the DVD, and now the machine doesn't even spin the drive up.
I have also reset the PMU following the directions on the apple knowledge base.
Is there something I've missed? I do not have another mac to try Target mode. Any suggestions would be welcome!
    TIA,
    dan

Another opton is to pop in the disk, restart, holding down the OPTION key, select the disk, and click the lower-right arrow. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178 has the details.

  • Old iBook Combo drive into BlackBook 2.0

I've got a dead 12" iBook 1.2GHz (with a combo drive) and a BlackBook Core Duo 2.0GHz (with a drive that doesn't want to accept disks...)
I'm sure the BlackBook drive is bad (ie.- dirty/non repairable) and am wondering if it would be easier to just swap out the two.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
Will the iBook drive work in my BlackBook?
    Thanks in advance,
    Double_A

No, the iBook drive is 12.7mm high and the MacBook takes a 9.5mm high drive. Check out the specs at OWC. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/superdrives/

  • Upgrading iBook  combo drive to Superdrive?

Suppose I have a DVD pulled from a dead Titanium Powerbook 15" G4/867 (it had a really bad accident) and I want to replace a 12" iBook G4/800 CD-RW combo drive with the DVD SuperDrive.
    (a) Will the salvaged SuperDrive fit inside the iBook?
    (b) Are the power and data cables and connectors and connector locations identical?
    (c) Will I have to reinstall the operating system?
    (d) If the answer to (c) is "yes" do I just rerun the 10.4.4 update or do I have to do an "archive and install" or .... ???
    Thanx!

I dont think you should mess with that. But if you want open your ibook and look if the cables and size are the same. If they are.... get a second opinion and try it. Also if you put a new cd drive your OS will not get lost

  • Ibook g4 won't boot from install disks

Got an ibook g4 1.33 ghz combo drive from original owner w/install disks. I want to reinstall original system but it won't boot from install disk 1. Tried starting holding down c but ignores disk. Holding down option just gives me the HD. Install disk shows up on desktop and opens. Tried disk utility from install disk but it doesn't allow me to erase the hd. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks.

OK, so let us suppose that you have the correct disk, the possibilities are:
    • the optical drive is not functioning properly. However, since the disk shows up on the desktop the drive is apparently reading it.
    • the disk itself is the issue. It could the wrong disk, but let us assume it is not. It could be damaged so that it is no longer bootable, or it could dirty. I would begin by giving the disk a good buffing and see if that will encourage it to boot the computer.
    Good luck.

  • Spontaneously opening Combo Drive

I have a 14" iBook, 800Mhz G3, with a Combo Drive (DVD-ROM, CD-RW). In the past three months, under both OS X (10.3.9) and OS 9.2.2, my CD-tray has popped open spontaneously a least a few times a week. It only does this when empty, and the behavior is exactly the same as if I've pressed the F12 eject key. It's kind of comical. I'll be typing along, and all over a sudden I'll here the little buzzing sound, and then click the drive will open. I just reach up and push it back in and it closes normally. I'm 100%, absolutely certain that I am not accidentally pressing F12 (I know you were thinking it...). Anyone else experienced this problem on any tray loaders?
I do have one theory, but I know don't know enough about hardware to validate it. For humor's sake, I'll tell you the story. 11 months into my iBook's life (it's now approaching the ripe old age of 4 years) it developed the now infamous iBook video problem. Apple kept it for three weeks, replacing the logic board (I could have done it in 3 hours, but let's not go there). Since it came back to me, it's obvious there is a screw rolling around inside the iBook. You can hear it when the computer is tipped one way or another. I know I should have sent it right back to Apple demanding that it be fixed at once, but the computer was finally functioning properly, and it didn't seem worth another 3 weeks without it. My theory is that somewhere, there must be an electronic switch that initiates the "open CD tray" process, and that the screw is shorting that and tripping the process from time to time.

Man, you're right. You should have sent it back immediately. What if the screw shorted out the logic board instead of just tripping the optical drive eject mechanism?
Water under the bridge. I'd call them and explain. They may have a hard time not laughing at you for asking for the repair at this late stage of the game, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. It won't hurt to ask.

OK after many nights of googling I finally came upon a suggestion that fixed this issue.
Itunes won't recognise a drive letter earlier than c. The Windows 7 defaulted my drive to B. On the surface it seems like a stupid bit of programming logic to me.
To Fix - Control Panel -> System & Security -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management. In the Computer Management select disk management in the left hand pane and this should display all of your drives in the center pane. Highlight you cd/dvd/blu-ray drive and then right click and select change Drive Letter and Paths. Select an unused letter higher than B. Restart itunes and voila the drive appears under devices.

  • Combo Drive and Super Drive

My iBook is equipped with a combo drive. Can I replace it with a super drive? If I can, how? Should I take my iBook to an Apple repair center?

    Hi iBook fan
Yes you can replace your combo with a Superdrive. You can get it replaced at an Apple service centre, and yes, it is also possible to do it yourself, so it is all go!
To replace it you will need to dismantle your iBook, and that depends on how you feel about doing such a technical exercise, but it is possible.
Superdrives are available here for your iBook:
    Superdrives for iBook
and an installation guide is available here:
Installing Optical Drive on an iBook G4
So you have a complete choice available to you.

  • My iBook won't recognize my combo drive

My computer is acting like no combo drive exists. There are no drivers installed and my 'about this mac' tells me nothing is recognized. I put a disk in and it tells me "The disk cannot be used because the disk drive is not supported. (error code0x80020025)" What do I do?! Thank folks, you're great!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

That's what the tech guy over the phone said to do. Well when I took out my extra ram the problem was solved! I then decided to put the ram back in and test it and it was still solved! So I think unpluging the power and taking the battery out resets something. Try your old stick of ram - it might still work...

  • Since updating to Lion the iMac won't recognise the external hard drive (maxtor) when waking from sleep mode,

Hi All, Since updating to Lion, my imac won't recognise the ext HDD (Maxtor) when waking from sleep mode, I have tried another port, diisc utility (Ext HDD not listed in here) but nothing works. I now find that I have to restart the imac to get the drive recognised..which is fine until the imac goes into sleep mode then I lose the drive and have to restart etc etc.....anyone suffering same issue.  The Ext Drive worked perfectly until the upgrade..

Thanks for this, and apologies for delay in replying...in between seeing your post I backed up the ext hdd to another mac and used the disc utility to erase and repair and then re mounted the ext hdd. OK.  I have then tested the ext hdd being recognised when waking from sleep mode a few times and everything appears to be fine. If this doesn't work (long term) I will follow the instructions as you have suggested....
I now have a new problem with my HP printer (Photosmart Plus) which is not being recognised by a new wireless router..Ok whilst the router is switch on and I have reconfigured the printer..but when the router is switched off overnight and then switched back on...I get a 'printer is not connected' message and have to go through the re configure routine all over. I am minded to think this is a router problem as the same issue is happening to my wifes Mac Book Pro (which is only a few weeks old)...any suggestions..

  • Old Itunes library (from PC) on external hard drive - Mac won't recognise

I feel like I've tried absolutely everything, so hopefully someone here can help.
I had my Itunes library stored on an external disc. This was when I was using Itunes on a PC. It all ran fine....
Now we've upgraded to a Mac and for the life of me I cannot get Itunes to recognise the library.
First I just tried changing the folder location with no luck. Now I've tried holding down alt when starting Itunes, I've located the folder, and at first it seemed all was well as the albums (sans artwork) all appeared in Itunes. But when I try to play them or send songs to my Iphone, it says it can't locate the file. I've tried to then manually point it to the external drive and the old library and it still won't recognise it.
    Can anyone suggest anything??
