IBook G4 won't start up, blue screen death!  HELP!

I have an iBook G4 (1.2ghz). It has a new hard drive (5 months old), 2 gigs of ram (5 months old), and a new battery (2 months old). I was checking some baseball scores today, and everything froze, as if the hard drive had died. I tried to reboot, and it got stuck at a blue screen. I tried to reboot 4-5 times, and once it worked! I tried running my backup software, and it froze, without backing up my files. Since then, I have:
zapped the pram,
tried to start from a CD
tried to start up in safe mode
nothing gets me past the blue screen of death. I can't even fathom why it won't start from a CD. Is my computer dead? is the hard drive dead? what is let to do?

for those who come across this - and have similar issues - i have an ibook g4 - 14". I used the shim method described by http://www.coreyarnold.org/ibook/ . While he used this method on a 12", I used it on a 14", and it seems to have worked. The computer has been up and running for nearly 4 hours and everything has been backed up. I used 2 3/4" rubber gripping pads purchased at true value for less than $2. The tools cost me $25 from ifixit.com. Beats a reball, and certainly beats a $300 logic board replacement (not including labor!).

  • IMac G3 600 OS 10.4.10 won't start-only BLUE SCREEN?

I have an iMac G3 slot-loader 600 Graphite with 10.4.10 768 MB RAM 40Gig HD. It failes to start up. I get the white screen with the Apple logo and the small spinning sprocket. After 5 minutes, it goes to a BLUE SCREEN with the spinning sproket, then after 5 more minutes the mouse cursor appears only. You can move the cursor around the BLUE SCREEN. Tested RAM from another machine, and battery reads 3.7 volts.
    Thanks!

Well, I'd try powering on with the shift key held down. This boots in safe mode which will run repair disk and skip loading of some software.

  • 14" iBook won't boot past Blue Screen?

    Hi,
I have in my possession my Sisters 14" iBook G4. It boots with the grey Apple logo but then freezes at the blue screen. I'm guessing it's either the hard drive or logic board, does anyone have a procedure to follow to diagnose the fault? I don't have the original discs but do have a 10.5 retail box.
    Thanks in advance.

Spudnuty - I think you might want to hear this...
I just bought an ibook G4 1.2Ghz "Late 2004" model off of ebay, had the blue screen problem. I bought it because I thought it might have been the OS (freeze at login) and the previous owner didn't know, but it was an actual freeze... actually froze a few times while at the spinning wheel at startup, and would randomly display a dark blue screen sometimes at startup.
I am an ACMT, I decided to disassemble the machine as per the service manual and get it down to basically the logic board, even pulled off the top display entirely. Ran an external monitor via mini-VGA, external HD via Firewire... still froze at blue screen. So I decided something similar to your suggestion - I pulled off the heat sink, only to discover that the conventional way of cooling a cpu/gpu (heating compound directly under heat sink) had been abandoned on this model for some crappy adhesive pads. The pads had a bit of thickness to them, so I decided to cut of a small section of the top shield, fold it into a nice square and flatten it. I then put some heat sink compound on both the cpu and gpu, put the metal "shim" on the gpu and tightened down the heat sink. Guess what? Started up in a jiffy. I put a fresh install of Tiger on it, have been playing multiple Quicktime vids looped for a while now... machine is going strong.
All that to say, shimming works on these later ibook G4 models that get the blue screen, I've confirmed it. Just remove the adhesive pads, shim with something heat conductive (maybe even aluminum foil!), add heat compound and run it for a while.

  • My ibook G4 won't start it shows black screen and loud fan sound only

my ibook G4 won't start, after you press the on key it makes a loud air sound, almost like a kernel panic sound, no screen light just the sound, it will turn off by pressing the on key again. Is there anything I can do to get it on?

    Your very welcome.
You would need to apply pressure to the left side of the track pad about 2cm out. I found applying pressure to both sides of the track pad more successful. All you have to do is push down on the case, while making sure your iBook is on a flat surface. If you have someone willing to help you, you can get them to apply the pressure while you back up your files. Other methods would involve tempory repair or removal of the hard drive. If you remove the hard drive to be read by another computer, you would need a cady to put the drive into. These caddies are cheap enough. Would suggest you use a USB cady and plug your drive into that, which would act as USB external drive. I'd suggest you get a USB cady to remove your files, be careful to what operating system you have on the computer you are using to get the files off. Windows OS won't read a MAC OS X drive (extended journal format) It would need to be another  Mac or a Linux PC.
If removing the hard drive is something your not to confident in doing, you could alway pay a computer repair shop to remove it for you. (Maybe they would have a USB cady for a 2.5 IDE hard )

Let's hope just applying enough pressure is enough to get your files back up.
    Best of luck!

  • My G5 won't start beyond grey screen

    Hi Folks,
My G5 won't start beyond grey screen with the logo on it. The fans simply get louder and louder.
It acts as our server and the raid drive on it had been having privileges problems. One person on another forum suggested I run Disc Utility to repair permissions. I did so, there were a couple of minor permissions fixed. After that, the Mac would not re-boot.
I got the DVD door open and ran Disk Warrior on the drive, the files and the hardware. It claimed to repair a few minor issues and there were no problems with the hardware. It still wouldn't boot, so I reset the SMU. ?Still no start, so I reset the PRAM. Still the same.
    Any ideas?
G5, OSX 10.5.6, 6 GB ram, approximately 100 GB free on system drive, over 800 GB free on RAID.

I'm having the same problem though I'm running 10.4.11. After getting to about the point you are at did an "Archive and Install" but after about a day of working fine, it had a kernal panic and I couldn't boot past the gray screen again. I took it to my local Apple Store and they ran 2 hours of diagnostics w/o finding anything wrong. They told me to do an "Erase and Install." That is where I am at now because I can't get the machine to boot from my 10.3.5 Install CD--it hangs at the black screen when I try to boot from the CD by holding down "C" at boot. This is the original system software that came with the machine at purchase.
There are many posts out there about bad RAM causing these kinds of problems. You might want to search around for those posts.
Good luck and I'm going to watch this thread hoping that someone will have a suggestion that will help me too.

Hi chesterday, and a warm welcome to the forums!
You must repair the HD, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft...
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
    You'll need the CD though.
Unfortunately, Disk Utility can't fix all that much, and the only other Apple Options are erasing the HD, or installing OSX to a second drive, then using Migration Assistant to move stuff over to the new HD.

my ibook g4 won't start anymor from the harddisk. so I tried to reinstall the system from the orginial system cd. Doesn't work. It says the system cd is damaged. What should I do?

I would question that error message if the Mac OS X 10.5 DVD doesn't work, either.
What error message(s) did you get with the Mac OS X 10.5 DVD? Is the Mac OS X 10.5 DVD the full retail install DVD, an upgrade DVD, or a DVD that came with another Mac?

  • Ibook G4 won't start - beeps 4 times-flashes 5 times

My ibook G4 won't start - beeps 4 times-flashes 5 times. It has been working great - I installed 1 gig ram and new hard drive last week and pro tools. It has run for a week great then this. Very Frustrated.

to whom ever may read this.
I took the keyboard off and made sure the ram was secure ( took it out and stuck it right back in) and everything SEEMS to be working. (maybe it got knocked loose from when they inatlled the Hard drive - which was done after the ram installation - or just got bumped) - If any one has had these problems I would still like to know how you solved them - this was very scary!!!

  • IBook won't start up - black screen

Hi, wonder if anyone can help with this...
I have an iBook which is about 5 years old. It's always been fine up until this weekend when i turned it on as normal and it just won't start up. All i see is a black screen but it does for a while sound like it's trying to start up.
I left it for a day turned off then tried turning it on again - this time it looked as if it was starting with the grey screen & apple icon then half may through it froze and there are lines all over the screen in various different colours - this doesn't look like a good sign!
I've tried starting in safe mode and also by inserting the install CD and starting up holding C but neither register.
    Any ideas???
    Thanks in advance!

    Hey AbiTWR,
.. starting with the grey screen & apple icon then half may through it froze and there are lines all over the screen in various different colours- this doesn't look like a good sign!
Unfortunately you're right about that. That's the classic symptom for a graphics processor chip that's coming loose. You could try the shim repair mentioned all over this board. Depending on the speed and size you basically put a shim under the board under the GPU.
