IBook G4 won't wake up or restart

System: iBook G4, purchased June 2005, running 10.4.x (whatever the latest update is)
A little backstory:
For the past few days I've had trouble waking up my iBook. When it didn't wake up, I just restarted. I also noticed that the charging light wasn't always accurate (it would go back and forth and sometimes be green when it should be orange and vice versa).
Today it wouldn't wake up and hasn't worked since. I've tried my previous method of just restarting to no avail. Other things I've tried:
- forced shutdown and restart.
- taking out the battery and tried running off the power cord.
- taking out the battery, waiting, putting it back in, and restarting.
- resetting the RAM.
- removing the RAM and Airport card and restarting.
- replacing the RAM and Airport card and restarting.
When I try to restart now there is a slight whirring and sometimes a flicker on the screen, but then it goes silent and dark.
The battery is not in the recall batch, and I haven't had any problems with it since buying it last summer.
The Apple Help page suggests going to an Apple Store, but there are none near me (I'm in Switzerland). The Help page suggests a few repair places nearby that are not Apple Stores, but I don't know if my AppleCare (672 days remaining) works overseas in non-Apple shops.
If anyone has any information relating to my boot problem or my servicing problem, I'd be most grateful.

IBook G4 won't wake up from sleep

After I've left my iBook sitting for a while (30 minutes or so) and it goes to sleep, I've found I have to reset my iBook (push the button on the bottom and the power button at the same time -- sometimes several times) to get it to wake it up. No amount of key pressing (pounding, almost) and clicking wakes it up. There's plenty of power left on the battery. What am I doing wrong?
By the way, what is the difference between the computer going to sleep and the hard drive going to sleep? There are different settings in the system preferences for these two, and I don't understand what are the different effects.

Hard drive sleep just spins down the HD, Computer sleep shuts everything down BPU, HD, Monitor, Graphic Card, Airport, etc., and saves the most battery.
Here are the first two things to do in any troubleshooting situation...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then boot off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.

My laptop sleeps and won't wake up unless restarted.

Ever since I upgraded to Windows 10, my laptop has been behaving strangely. Whenever I "lock" my computer for a bit, it doesn't lock at all as when I come back on, the laptop unlocks and I am straight back to where I was. This is worrying as anyone could just get onto my stuff. Then i leave my laptop plugged in and "locked" overnight. When I come to it in the morning, The on/off button is lit but my screen stays blank and when I press any button nothing happens. I try pressing the on/off button but northing happens. The only way to get my computer to start is by pressing and holding the on/off button to completely switch my laptop off and then restart it. That's when i can sign in mto begin with and then the whole cycle starts again. I would be grateful for some help!

Command (Apple) + Control + Power button should get you a restart.
Instead, it would be my recommendation that you shut it down by holding the Power button down for 5 to 10 seconds.
Next, try resetting the PMU. The PMU (Power Management Unit) has control over the sleep function, so resetting it may help.
Then, every time you have to do a forced shutdown or restart instead of a normal one, there is a chance of hard drive damage and you should repair the hard drive, either by booting into Safe Mode OR by starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key at the end of the startup chime. Then choose Installer > Open Disk Utility (in Panther) or Utilities > Disk Utility (in Tiger) and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with either Safe Mode or the Install disc's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on your hard drive.
If you take these steps, maybe you can bid the sleep problems goodbye.

Ibook won't wake up or crashes after waking from sleep mode

I have now had this problem for the last year with my new ibook g4 and I can confirm that the problem is present at OS X version 10.3.0 - 10.3.9 and 10.4.0-10.4.5 . I'd manage to solve it but once in a while it shows up again and i have to solve it all over again. Apple doesn't seem to care although it makes your iBook totally unusable if you can't put it to sleep mode, because of the fact that you can't leave your iBook ON while the lid is closed. Ok as I said I have this problem once in a while but I allways manages to solve it, here are my observations:
Leting the computer go into sleep mode by itself (not by closing the lid) will not result in a crash.
Before a crash the following allways occour:
1) The system gets highly unstable. Programs (mostly safari, mail and itunes) will crash without warning. The mouse reacts very slowly and lags behind. The mouse lag is a shure indication that the system will crash during the next seconds or minuts.
2) While set to automaticly connect to favorite network, the airport won't connect imidiatly, but it will take a few seconds more than usual before it connects.
3) The system sometimes crashes before it can activate the backlight resulting in the situation where people think that the system can't wake up from sleep mode and won't react.
Only forcing the computer to sleep mode can cause this failure (by pressing "sleep mode" or by closing the lid).
What i did to rule out some sources resulting in this error:
1) Something like this problem can happen when having a bad memory socket or bad memory, so I'd ran Apples Hardware test and memtest OSX, but no failure was indicated.
2) Ran the usual repair of disk permissions (like 10^6 times ), without any changes.
3) Tried to reset the PMU (Power managing unit), without any changes.
4) Also tried to make a clean installation with panther 10.3 and tiger 10.4, without changes. Before installing anything (no prgrams or updates) the system still crashes. Even after updating to. 10.3.9 and 10.4.5 the problem is still present
The solution:
Well I found out that the problem has to do with to power options. That would normally mean that reseting the PMU would help, but as I already said this didn't change anything. Apparently the system is not able to wake up the Harddisk from sleep mode, and that's basicly the problem. I don't understand why it doesn't crash when going to sleep mode all by itself, but aparently there's something diffrent by forcing the system to sleep mode. Fourthermore it's not so "happy" to change those settings for the harddisk (I will explain later).
Solution:
1) Basicly just UNCHECK the option "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment. And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never" , do this for Battery and AC Power settings.
2) And put CPU usage to "Automatic", do this for Battery and AC Power settings
3) Restart the ibook. When it plays it's startup sound reset PVRAM by holding the following keys down before the backlight turns ON: OptionCommand+PR , when you hear the startup sound again release the buttons and start OSX normally.
Now as I said this problems comes once in a while and that has to do with the fact that repairing my disk permissions can change/reset the above changes. Even if it isn't beeing displayed graphicly repairing the disk permission have reseted those changes, resulting in the fact that the system is crashing again.
So to solve this do the following for Battery and AC power settings:
1) CHECK/MARK the "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment and put CPU usage option the low or high. And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never"
2) Restart the ibook.
3) UNCHECK the option "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment". Put CPU usage option back to "Automatic". And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never"
4) Restart the ibook again. When it plays it's startup sound reset PVRAM by holding the following keys down before the backlight turns ON: OptionCommand+PR , when you hear the startup sound again release the buttons and start OSX normally.
So now it doesn't crash again.
I've read all the threads of people having this problem and apparently it has been present since OSX 10.0.0 and when calling apple support they tell you to reset PMU and repair the usual disk permissions, which of cause doesn' work. And there are aparently a lot of really angree costumers, because this problem makes the computer COMPLETLY unusable, but apple has done nothing to help those people because of the the fact there there has been released ZERO patches or changes in OSX to resolve this issue. I can't say that there is something wrong with the iBooks as the several hardware test's indicate no malfunctioning but there is some bug in Mac OSX wich specificly makes the system incable to tell some ibook's how to wake the harddisk from sleep mode.
To the fine folks working on this forum: No I will not send this to apple, they already know about this, and have done nothing (just think of the millions of crash reports they recieve from those hundreds of crashes everybody is geting from this problem). That is why I put this on the forum so that people can actually solve this problem by themselves. If you think it's worth sending to apple, so that this problem can finally be fixed after 4-5 years you are more than welcome to send it directly to somebody who will actually do something about this. And i really hope that giving people the opportunity to make ther computer work, doesn't violated the usual rule "that we are not allowed to write anything that is agains apples interests", wich often results in a removal of threads and ANY chance in SOLVING critical errors.

I just was working on an iBook that my father is giving to my sister. I must have started the problem by changing the sleep setting for battery to let HD sleep. After that the fun began! Instability, restart after restart, running Disk Warrior, fixing permissions over and over, etc. I finally zeroed out the HD and installed 10.4. Nothing worked until I read your post.

My ibook won't wake up

I have only had my ibook G4 for a few months and occasionally when I shut it down, it takes a few tries brfore I can get it to turn on. The last time I put it to sleep, it won't wake up. It was over 50% charged before I put it to sleep, but now when I check the battery on the back, only one button flashes?! It seems that when it is sleeping, it is draining the battery or something. I usually get 3.5 hrs or so of use on a charged battery, so I don't think it is a faulty battery. I don't have applecare and my 90 days are up! Does anyone have any suggestions on what this could be?

First of all: Get AppleCare (or a warranty extension from a local Apple dealer)! You can buy it within the first year, it isn't limited to first 90 days. Seriously, if you're not habitually buying a new computer every year or so it's worth it. Notebooks (usually) do get carried around a lot more than desktop pc and bad things happen (e.g. the hard disk in my PowerBook died after a little more than a year—mechanical failure, probably more Seagate's or whomever's fault than Apple's).
How long did leave in sleep mode when it drained the battery? (Yes, it also needs energy in sleep mode so after several hours it will run flat …!
Try resetting the PMU (see here)! (You know it worked when the date is set to 1970 after booting.)
Also, maybe the battery already is damaged after all (something that happens, too—I had one that went from 50% to zero without waring).
With the right energy saving settings, a thoughtful use of screen brightness and all unused network devices (ethernet, wifi eventually and also bluetooth) in my experience an iBook battery should last up to 5 hours (depending on your usage, of course!).
My advice: Try not to let the battery run flat after the initial calibration (see Apples support docs, I'm too lazy to google them up)! You can (re)charge it any time, but letting it run flat will diminish its capacity!! (Works like that with most modern devices with rechargeable batteries (cellphones, iPods etc.). Unfortunately many people still think it's better let them run flat every time like in the old days.)
Mind you, a notebook battery will suffer wear and tear and will need to be replaces at some point …

My fairly new os 10.7.2 iMac won't wake up after I've been using iTunes over airport express. I have to manually shut down and restart

When I use my airport express to listen to iTunes in the garage, the computer won't wake up by pressing a key, I have to reach behind the computer and hold down the power button and restart to get a screen. This only happens in the garage which has a newer express than the rest of the rooms. Version 7 vs 6 as I recall. I've check ed updates, but it shows updates are all complete.
Any suggestions would be great.

Hi I've been following this thread (along with a different one on the same topic). I've been having the same problem with my ibook. I can add that I have no problem with startup. It's just that the screen "goes to sleep" unexpectedly and may operate normally for a few minutes or a few hours at most. Opening and closing the lid or restarting seems to cause it to awaken but then usually for just a few seconds or minutes. If it is connected to another video display that display continues functioning fine even though the computer screen is blank. In addition the desktop is there and visible faintly or if totally blank can be backlit through the apple logo and can be read. I've had my logic board replaced twice under the extended warranty and assumed it was that but now I'm thinking of the reed switch. Apple refuses to consider any further work under warranty as the last repair was in Jan, 06 and they claim only a 90 parts warranty and the machine is from 03. Any thoughts before I cut the wires? I have reset the pmu, run cocktail and disk utility. Other than the sleep issue the machine works fine. thanks Ronda or anyone else who has any ideas... Dave

G4 won't wake after sleeping

My ibook G4 has recently been unable to wake after sleeping. The only recent software change was a Security update and itunes update. the problem seemed to start just after that.

The screen is not set to dark. When it fails to wake up from sleeping, there is no noise from the disk drive. There is no reaction to any input except holding the on off button until it restarts.
This seems to be an intermittent problem; sometimes it won't wake at all, sometimes it wakes, but makes a steady buzzing noise until I restart it.
I've set it to never sleep, but since I travel with my computer most every day, I do have to close it, and then often have the problem when I re-open it.

I'm using a late 2006 2.33GHz imac.I clean installed 10.6 from disc then updated to 10.7 from download.Now every time my computer goes into sleep it won't wake up.Anyone know how to cure this problem please??

The only way it will restart is to pull the mains lead out of the imac, put it back and try until it will start.
This only happened after reinstalling. Only Apple OS was on the imac and so it must be an issue with the software I believe.....
Anyone know how to cure this problem please?

This isn't a fix, more a workaround I used when I had wake from sleep problems that lasted from some point in 10.6.x, through 10.7 and into 10.8 (got fixed for me in 10.8.2). It seems to be connected with Bluetooth failing to wake up properly:
System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'.

My iBook G4 will not shut down or restart without force

I have huge issues with my 20 month old iBook. For the last two months it has been acting completely out of character.
The issue that's frying my head completely is the fact it won't shut down or restart by itself. I always have to hold the power button until it dies. When I start it up again, the screen is at minimum brightness every time, and I don't know why that would happen.
Not only that, but every program freezes at the one time at least 4 times a week (I use this thing every day). And, when one program stops responding, even force quitting doesn't close it, I have to force the whole system to shut down and restart to be able to use the program again.
I have never had any problems with this machine until two months ago. In fact, I had been boasting to my friends for the prior year and a half about how it had never crashed on me. Why is it starting now, and going all the way?
Would it have anything to do with a wireless router? Or an external hard drive? Right before all this crap started happening, I bought myself an external 80Gb hard drive because I was struggling to find space on this 27Gb internal hard drive. I was always running on 1-2Gb, and now I'm running on 8-9Gb of space. Around the same time, a housemate of mine talked me into sharing my internet connection with him via a wireless router. The router was connected to my iBook, and caused some speed problems, not with the internet but with my system. That project was abandoned after about a week because the housemate was never able to keep an online connection. And since then, my laptop's been screwed up.
I'd like to know reasons for why it's going screwey, and if I have to fork out stupid money to fix something that's supposed to be still working.

Mac Mini/Mountain Lion sleeps but won't wake up (or crashes) every night.

I have a mid-2010 mac mini server on which I recently installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2 (without server stuff).
Every night, it stops responding. The led is on but the display is off and it does not respond to mouse/keyboard. I even tried remote desktop.
The only solution is the power button...
What I already did :
- Reset Pram/Nvram
- Reset SMC
I also took a look at the console and I found a message that is fired just before the machine stops responding.

Hi, I'm quite interested by your issue, because i get the exact same one.
On my mini (late 2012), system doesn t wake up from sleep if it has slept for more than 1 hour.
In fact I get the exact same message as you get in your console.
When I try and wake up system before the programmed maintenance wakeup, it wakes up fine.
But as soon as this programmed time has passed, it just won t wake up, I have to force switch it off via the power button and restart it.
I have nothing plugged on my mini except : AC - Thunderbolt display, and LAN connected to my freebox.
Do you still have the issue or is it ok now for you ?
I'll try in the upcoming days to plug the freebox in the thunderbolt display's adapter instead of the macmini's rj45.

I held off from posting this until I'd scoured the boards looking for ideas, but I'm totally out.
Every since I updated to 10.4.8, my MacBook Pro won't wake from sleep. I've tried resetting the SMU and PRAM, enabled and disabled bluetooth device wake from sleep, and installed the latest EFI Firmware update that was just released. I've now narrowed it down to the 10.4.8 and a change in how it handles Expresscards. If I have my NitroAV FW 800 card plugged in during a session, it seems to prevent the MacBook from going to sleep properly. According to various Console messages, the PCI device prevents the computer from going to sleep, and /or places the computer into System Doze instead, from which it won't wake. The sleep light stays fixed and steady, only disappearing if I press the power button (it only reacts to the power button). From there the screen remains dark and all plugged in device fail to respond. I can hear the drive spin back up.
It reacts the same whether or not I eject the card before putting the computer to sleep. This behavior was not present before installing 10.4.8 and having fallen back on a back up of my 10.4.7 install, can say it's not present in the older OS version. I was hoping last night's EFI firmware update would deal with this, but after having installed it and 10.4.8 anew, I'm having the same old results.
If anyone has any new ideas or can direct me toward how I can make sure the folks at Apple see this, I'd greatly appreciate it.

After that, nothing until I force a restart.

Display blank, key board light not working, won't wake up if sleeps.

Hi. I just bought a Toshiba Satellite P850 and after two weeks I had the first big problem.
It starts normally first time but after a shut-down and a few hours later start,the display is blank, any light on.The back light keyboard the same - only the power button and battery/wireless-connection have the light on.
If I shut it down again and then restart (by pressing the power button) nothing happened same screen and no light.
Tried to do this.. remove battery,press pow. button for 30-60 sec,plug charger,and the restart. it works. but after a shut-down and a few hours later restart,I have the same problem. If sleep mode it won't wake up.
Don't know what to do.. it's a brand new Toshiba Satellite. used a few hours a day for two weeks.

It sounds like the computer is going into Sleep mode or Hibernation and not coming out of it. Go to the Control Panel and select Power Options. Whatever your current power setting, select the Advanced settings under it. Check out your Sleep and Hibernation settings. In this case, I would disable them. You might want to enable the Screen Saver and let that kick in if you're away from the computer for any length of time.
In cases of mysterious computer issues, the best policy is to simplify. Reduce the number of attached devices. Keep the number of open applications down to a minimum. See if you can figure which hardware or software is causing this problem. And you should be able to fix it.

Macbook Pro with Leopard Won't Wake from Sleep

I'm intermittently, but with increased frequency finding my MBP won't wake from sleep. A copy of my log is below. I've snipped out where the log repeats. A common message is the "unknown SIGSEGV code 0". Any ideas what the issue is? How can I go about diagnosing?

Hi David,
- Have you tried any troubleshooting steps?
You may try the following steps:
1. Reset SMC as per the following article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US. If this does not resolve the issue then go to step 2.
2. Navigate to Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/System Configuration and remove a file called powermanagement.plist (drag it to trash, might prompt for a password). Restart the mac thereafter. If this does not resolve the issue, boot to safe mode as per http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455 and check the issue there. If it works there, you will have to remove the following files to check Macintosh HD/Library/StartupItems, HD/Library/Caches and then restart the mac.
Let me know if this works.

Rev B Won't Wake Up

I have a Rev B 17" iMac that I have never had any issues with until today. It would not wake up from sleep and when I pressed a key the screen was black and the fans went full blast. I then powered it down and restarted and everything was fine. Ran hardware test which it passed. Any thoughts as to the reason?

If it happens again, try the following;
If your Mac happily goes to sleep but won't wake up--Hold down the power switch to force-reboot your machine and get it running again.
Don't worry-your Mac isn't narcoleptic. Its Open Firmware system or NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) is likely corrupt, and your Mac can't remember how to wake up.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command-Option-O-F key combo until you see a somewhat intimidating command-line display that ends with the Open Fimware prompt. Type the following lines:
reset-nvram
press Return on keyboard
set-defaults
press Return
reset-all
press Return
Your Mac will reboot. Once it's running, put it back to sleep to test. If the problem recurs your Energy Saver preferences may be the culprit. Delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file (go to Finder/Hard drive/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)--don't worry, your Mac will regenerate a new one--and then restart to see if that rights the wrong.
Still did'nt work? Might be time to call AppleCare or see an Apple Genius or a technician.
