Ibook G4 Wont start

I walked up to my computer and i shocked it accidently and it all the sudden shut down. The battery is fully charged and everything and it wont turn on.

Try resetting the PMU.
1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
3. Wait 5 seconds.
4. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.

My ibook g4 wont start up. I get a long high pitched beep the light n front flashes, then normal start up beep. Sounds like its struggling to start up, still black screen. I've tried rebooting every way, and from start up disk. Please help!
I don't care if I can't fix it to use it again. I just want to at least be able to get some stuff off of it...
    Thanks!!

    Hello,
That would seem to me like a problem with the memory module installed under the keyboard.
Try removing it and restarting the iBook. If it boot up fine, then try reseating the memory back in.
It could be a faulty memory and may require replacement.
You may also want to try resetting the PMU, it might help.

  • IBook G3 wont start...nothing happens...Please help!

    Hiya Everyone,
My iBook G3 wont start-up. It was fine yesterday but today when i turned tried to turn it on it was completely unresponsive.
When presing the power button nothing happens, no hard drive spin up, no noises...nothing.
This ever happened to anyone before?
    All help greatly appreciated.
    Daniel.

I'm sorry, Dean, but the Geniuses were correct. The iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program is not a recall in the truest sense of the word, and only covers the specific logic board problem dealing with video. It has never covered any and all logic board problems.
    Enjoy that new MacBook!
If you want to sell the non-working iBook, PowerBook Tech buys them and parts them out. You may want to check them out.

My iBook G3 12.1screen, 2002 model dual usb wont start up, it worked the other day but now wont, the battery is full, i have also tried another one, there is no reset button on it, i have zapped the pram any ideas

iBooks with the logic board problem have been known to work intemittently. After leaving it sit overnight, does squeezing the case to the left of the trackpad allow you to start up and work for a bit as long as you keep the pressure on it there? If so, you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer in the Apple Discussions iBook G3 (Dual USB) Displays Forum:
[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.

Instructions for removing the lower case:
    iFixit.com
If the shim fix doesn't work (or you're leery of trying it), DT & T Computer Services in Fremont, California offers the cheapest repair I've found. They have a six-month warranty on the repair.
Once you get it fixed, try never to pick it up by the left front corner alone. The theory is that picking it up by the left front corner alone can contribute to logic board failure when the case flexes, causing the graphics chip to come loose from the logic board. If you're picking it up in your left hand (as I often do mine), pick it up in the center under the trackpad.
    Good luck.

It sounds like you may be having logic board problems. Enough dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from this problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Check out the FAQ page and if the symptoms look familiar (in other words, any of these things happened before it quit working entirely), give Apple a call. If your iBook qualifies, it's a free fix.
If you are past the three-year time limit, try calling and asking for Customer Relations (NOT Customer Service--they can't help you) and ask them to please make an exception to the three-year limit in your case.
If the answer from Apple is absolutely, positively, "NO!" DT & T Computer Services will do the repair for $195 plus shipping to and from Fremont, California. They offer a six-month warranty on the repair. They also do free diagnostics, in case the logic board is not the problem.
Or maybe now is a good time to be thinking about a new MacBook? They do look nice.

  • My ibook wont start..HELP

my ibook wont start up properly it either tells me to restart or the screen freezes so i have to restart it never makes it to the login screen...what should i do??

    Hello Isabel,
If you have any additional RAM installed remove it and see if it will start. Defective RAM can cause kernel panics and so can a loose AirPort card. Here are the instructions for removing/adding RAM.

  • 12" iBk wont start- makes noises tho

iBook 1.2 Ghz 10.4.11 started just shutting off for no reason (No battery- just AC), now it wont start up at all. Ive tried the PMU reset several times, no good.
Now I hear power entering the ibook on start but I just get a (slightly) lumminated black screen . No chime. Just freezes there until I unplug it.
If I can get it to boot (looks less likely now) what Hardware test CD does it use?
Any ideas? The DC in board? Does this have a clock battery?
    Thanks so much

    Hey Steve,
OK we shimmed the 14" iBook too and replaced the HD. (The shim is nice and thick!) Now the ibook (14") starts with a loud fan noise, then beeps 4X, with 3 flashes.
OK, see here I'm getting confused and too many things are going on and being changed.
I did look up the error code about the Boot ROM, but how is this fixed?
Well if it is the Boot ROM it isn't repairable except by new logic board or swapping the ROM from an identical board.
However here's what the Service Manual for the 1.2 12" says:
"Computer beeps four times at startup
    1. Four beeps indicates a bad checksum for the remainder of the boot ROM. The ROM
(which is located on the logic board) is bad.
    2. If a RAM card is installed in the expansion slot, remove it and put in known-good and compatible RAM and restart.
    • If symptom does NOT repeat, replace RAM card.
    • If symptom repeats, replace logic board.
    3. If no RAM card is installed, replace logic board."
So I didn't realize the RAM could cause this symptom.
If it is the ROM it could have been killed by static if you touched the logic board.

  • HT4061 ipad wont start

    Hi,
i pulled my new iPad (gen 3) out of my bag and tried to start it but it wouldn't start.  I have charged it overnight via the supplied wall charger but it still wont start.  I have plugged it into a computer (not one loaded with itunes) and have been charging it via the computer for an hour but it still wont start.
Can you please advise next steps?

    iPad: Basic troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3274
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Post ios5 update -- videos for ipad2 wont start after adding album art using get info

this never happened w ios4. before, i could manually add posters on my movies using get info. but now, everytime i add posters the movie wont start. i wanna enjoy my movie playlist complete with movie posters/ cover art. do you experience the same prob?

Just added new art to two albums in iTunes v7. One the old way (Google Images then a drag and drop) and the other asking iTunes to get it for me. Only the art that was added manually has moved over to the iPod, which is 5th Generation 30GB.
It's not the worst thing in the world seems as I never had that art before anyways. I'm sure an update will be out soon it is a .0 release and I imagine they is lots of things under the hoot getting us ready for OS X 10.5.

  • I updated and now safari just wont start!

    so heres the deal:
    ibook 1ghz 14", 512 ram, 30gb, X 10.3.9.
So I updated to the latest security update, and now safari wont start - the icon just bounces once in the dok and dissapears.
I tried resetting the application bit using the chmod command, but to no avail.
So i redownloaded the 1.2 update, with no sucess.
I deleted safari (doh!) and tried to install from safari 1.0, but apparently that is not possible to install under my version of os x.
Im really reaching the end of my tether now - all my bookmarks etc are in safari - and whilst I can use the other multitude of browsers on my system Id rather be on safari (excuse the pun).
    Please please please help me!!!
Edit: Just tried to use software update, and that wont launch either :S
Edit: just found a related article after looking around the boards - please forgive me for not looking hard enough initially.
And for anyone having the same problem, check out: Saxman, "Post Security Update: NO Safari, Mail, Sftw Update, ...", 02:24am Aug 17, 2005 CDT
Edit: Well I tried the steps outlined in the above link - with no luck.
So I guess im still stuck & on checking them Im afraid to say that many of my apps wont launch, mail, safari, limewire, Software update to name but a few...
    any thoughts?
Edit: Well I guess I just didnt pay enough attention to the advice in the post linked above.
Where the instruction tells you to remove the webkit from within the system folder's library I was actually removing it from the global library on the root of the hard drive! :P
Ah well, all is fixed now - and infact my ibook seems to be running faster, and safari is definately running faster now
    Tally Ho!

It's not only Safari, it's every programm! The function is called "Resume" and will launch back the applications in the same way as you leaved them.
You can change it back in
System Preferences > General > Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps

  • Ibook will not start

Hi I have a problem with my ibook. It wont start up no matter what I do. I reset the pmu and that did nothing. The battery isnt charging and when i take it out and plug it in it still wont turn on. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!

    Hi Simps1ma,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You may have a problem with your DC-in Board which effects the charger (Knowledge Base Document #302461 on Troubleshooting iBook, PowerBook G4 and MacBook Pro power adapters). You may want to try reseting the PMU (Knowledge Base Document #14449, which covers Resetting Powerbook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU)).

  • My ibook won't start up!

A couple of days ago I put the lid down on my 900 MHz G3 ibook to send it to sleep and it turned itself off completely as it often does.
Now it wont start up. The OS X start up screen appears with the blue bar gradually filling up and the words "Mac OS X starting up" written below but instead of loading and moving onto Finder it just sits there with a full bar. I have left it doing this for several hours, several times but without any joy. The cursor is visable and moves around fine, no beachball.
I have been through the troubleshooting document and tried reseting the PMU etc but I either did that wrong or it didn't work as nothing seemed to happen.
If this has happened to anyone or if anyone can shed some light on it it would be hugely appreciated.

    Hi, Matty.
Are you able to start up in Safe Mode? This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk, so please be patient.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to help things out.
If you are unable to start up in Safe Mode, then try starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key as the startup chime is ending. Then click 'Next' at the language screen and choose Utilities > Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with either Safe Mode or the Install disc's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on the hard drive.
    Good luck.

  • Satellite A660 wont start again until i turn to safe mode

Just purchase toshiba Satellite A660: i tell the story to compensate closely to my answer, hopefully ..
I just purchase it new, run the insallation program for first use. When its up and running just within that day i noticed that it start to hang up when i hooked external drive for some program installation (adobe lightroom).
Its still fine but when i turn it off, it wont start again until i did turn to safe mode so that i could back up some of the files and run the recovery again.
This time on 64bit. When its finish its process, it works well for just a couple of hours.
It fell faster now thou, maybe because its on 64bit? ( any recommendation whether its 32 or 64bit) specs: i5 , 4ram, 1g ddcatd graphics , win7 home premium, ..
Now, when i turn it off it never start back again windows say.. start up repair. ..
I did let it run since this morning until now still they cant find whats the problem (i'm refering the loptop) .
So any idea on whats goin ?

    > It fell faster now thou, maybe because its on 64bit? ( any recommendation whether its 32 or 64bit) specs: i5 , 4ram, 1g ddcatd graphics , win7 home premium, ..
64bit Operating system is better if your notebook supports 4GB or more RAM.
Why? Because Win 32bit recognizes max 3.2GB even if more RAM is available.
This is 32bit limitation; no matter what OS it is; Linux, Win XP, Vista, Win7 etc
This is the reason why 64bit OS are so popular in the last time
    Regarding the OS issue;
    I recommend running a HDD recovery again... this means you should reinstall the OS usign the Toshiba recovery option;
Press F8 while powering up the notebook, Choose Repair my Computer, -> HDD recovery

  • After Effects just bounces in the dock but wont start

    Hi all,
Just installed CS4 production studio under Snow Leopard.  All works well and updated using the Adobe Updater.  All apps are fine except AE which just bounces in the dock a few times and then stops.  I read that this could be because Rosetta was not installed.  I installed Rosetta from the Snow Leopard DVD and still nothing.  Have restarted 3 times just in case (I also read that several restarts may be required to get it to work), but still nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Dave

OK... Now I feel like Scott of the Antartic writing in his journal before the inevitable... I am writing this purely to help anyone else with the same issue to resolve it without the pain that I am still experiencing.  Hopefully the last entry will read "all solved" and not "I am about to pop outside... I may be some time..."
After using CS2 for the bulk of my work I thought I'd try and get this solved once and for all, especially as we have a DVCPROHD project coming up and need CS4 to do it.
OK... The so now I have the suite running, except Premiere is running under at trial without the presets and the updates fail when installing.  Contacted support this week, they wont re-open the original case because it has been over a month.  Fair enough, new case.
The adobe guy takes control of my machine, deactivates it, then from Finder deletes lots of folders.  He then asks me to re-install the products.  I do this (2 hours later) and run Premiere and it appears to work with presets.  I look a bit closer and notice that under the help menu of Premiere Register, Deactivate and Updates are all greyed out.  This is not the case in the other products of the suite.  OK, so not a major deal but does imply something is not installed right.  I run the Adobe Updater, Premiere updates, but AE, PS and several updates fail.
Call back to support.  This time the Adobe guy takes control of my machine suggests I deactivate the suite, run the un-install and then download and run the CS3 Clean script and re-install.  I do all this.  Another 2 hours later feeding discs into the machine... and... Premiere looks fine, presets all there... but wait for it... AFTER EFFECTS JUST BOUNCES IN THE DOCK BUT WONT START.
3rd call back to support and ask for the issue to be escalated.  This is difficult and I have to cause a fuss to realise that this problem is the same one that has been hanging around for months and that I am not prepared to spend more hours removing every trace of Adobe from my machine and re-installing - this doesn't work.  The support technician asks me to delete a hidden folder that has all the Adobe patches in it, manually download the AE 9.0.2 update and install it.   It installs but AE wont start.  I explain that I've had enough and want the problem escalated.
I finally get a call back from a 2nd level engineer this morning.  After explaining the that AE wont start and then answering the question "why is this a problem for you!" we do some quick troubleshooting.  This time I have to pull out the network cable, turn off Airport, create a new user account, log on to it and then see if AE runs.  Which it does.  Within seconds we get launched into the pre-determined script, "if it runs under another user account then there is nothing wrong with the applications and I should call Apple".  After being patronised for a further 5 mins I had to PROVE to the guy that it was also possible that the fault was Adobes.  I also know the moment I phone Apple, the response will be "Call Adobe".
The only example I could give him at the time was to image a piece of software I had written that allocated memory based on the screen resolution (this is a user preference) and if my code was badly written and crashed when encountering a screen resolution bigger than my code was expecting.  OK, is that Apple's fault, no it is my code.  Will it run under one user and not another, yes it will.  There are a million other posibilities.  Some I agree could be Apple's, but equally some could be Adobes and the big fat fob off as soon as you can is terrible.
I have also since realised since leaving this call with the technician, that:
    1) This is a brand new iMac and the Adobe Suite was the 1st piece of 3rd party software installed on it.
    2) The iMac is for video editing and nothing else.
    3) This was working without presets before the Adobe guys deleted all these files and asked me to re-install.  It is more likely that they have deleted something they should not have rather than the a bug in the OS.  A bug in the OS is still possible but I suspect the problem is with a rogue bit of installation code from Adobe.
Finally incase anyone from Adobe is reading this:
I have paid thousands of pounds for this software.
I have been unable to use it for months.
A problem like this should be gold dust for you.  Here is the chance to get to the bottom of an issue that several people are having, understand the mechanics of what is going wrong.  Write a KB article as well as a patch and this would save the time/money and effort of an awful lot of people (including your own).
As a short thought experiment I would like everyone at Adobe to image the following:
You pay £1,000 of your own money for a tool to do your work on the promise that you can make this money back in productivity gains, new business, etc.
The tool you use every day to make a living won't work.  For the benefit of the experiment, imagine this is your email client, web browser or case management tool.
You have no IT group to replace your machine or to come and solve it.
You can't tell your customers that your software is down and you have to keep doing your job.
You have to spend an additional 3 days in your own time, working late or weekends to try and fix the software yourself.
You to keep downloading a Gigabyte of data 3 or four times and you have to pay for downloads.  Currently you are running up a bill of over £100 in downloads and phone calls.
You don't get paid the overtime and your customers start complaining you are late with your work.
You lose customers... you eventually get fired because you have lost too many of them.
...This is what it feels like for a small creative business to not be able to install the software they bought.
