IBook - Gray Screen and that's all?

Hello folks. A friend dropped off his iBook and ask if I could take a look at it - I did, he should keep it cleaner:)
… now that's not nice.
I turn it on, and the gray screen comes up, with the apple in the middle, along with the spinning fingers / beach ball or what you want to call it, but it goes no where.
I've put in the install CD, but it doesn't go to it… is this likely to be part of the recall Apple has for some iBooks?
It's a white one, I am not sure where to look for the serial number.
Could the internal battery be bad?
Skip

Skip,
Do you know what version of the OS is installed on the iBook?
What is the MHz rating?
What kind of optical drive does it have?
How much RAM is installed?
Will it start up from the OS X Install disc of the version of the OS that is on it? (To do this, you need to hold down the c key as the startup chime is ending.)
If it is a G3 Dual USB iBook, checking the serial number with the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program FAQ page is rather meaningless because the program gradually was expanded to include all the serial numbers (and all the G3 Dual USB iBooks).
There is no internal battery in an iBook.

  • Powerbook Lombard starts to the gray Apple - and that is ALL

My Lombard had 10.3.9 loaded on it for over a year with no hardware or other modifications. Then yesterday, I stupidly allowed Software Update to install a bunch of updates, including several security updates, itunes, and a few more. Anyway, after a little while, the computer crashed and, when I tried to restart it, all I got was the grey screen with the apple -- no spinning ball, nothing.
I have tried a lot of different things to fix this including:
    - reset pram (ctrl-option-p-r)
    - reset power management (reset button on back)
    - boot into single user (Apple - S) did not work, would not boot into single user so no fsck
    - boot into verbose (Apple - V) did not work
    - load emergency OSX disc that I made -- wouldn't load
I was able to boot onto an OS 9 emergency disk, but that really only got me to the point of trying to boot into the OS 9 partition that I had on the hard drive. I selected it in Startup Disc, but no go.
So, after all this, I decided to take the HD out of the Lombard and plug it into my G4 Powerbook via USB drive. Using Disc Utility I repaired the disc (actually no repairs were needed) and the permissions, put it back into the Lombard. . . . and . . . . nothing. Same gray screen with the darker gray Apple.
So, I tried to wipe the OSX partition from the HD and reinstall OS X on it. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy my 10.4.3 partition from my G4 Powerbook. This worked fine, but when I plugged the HD back into the Lombard . . . . nothing.
I am pretty much out of ideas. Please help!!!
[Also, if you know, what is the name of the screw that holds in the HD to the cage on a Lombard. I need to get a screwdriver for that so I swap in another HD that I have to make sure that the HD I'm using isn't the problem (but Disc Utility says its fine and it reads fine via USB).]

    M B1,
The prohibitory sign when booting to an OSX CD suggests a hardware issue. Here is the article on the prohibitory sign when booting to the HD:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106805
Here is an article on a no-start to CD (your issue):
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88152
    A few suggestions:
-I don't think the HD is a problem since you have zeroed/tested/installed 9.x/booted it successfully; something else is causing the boot to CD to fail.
-When you are booted to 9.x (HD or CD), open the System Profiler under the Apple menu and report what memory you have installed. You need at least 128MB and it can be split between the two RAM slots or all in the top or bottom.
-Check to see if the backside L2 cache memory is reported in the Profiler; you should have either 512K or 1MB depending on whether you have the 333MHz or 400MHz CPU. Also, cold boot (not restart) to 9.x, either from the HD or CD; if the L2 cache is damaged, you may get a warning dialogue at startup.
-You may have a Lombard with a microprocessor card that has this known issue: 9.x will run fine with the max of 512MB (2x256) but 10.x will fail with memory in the top slot. Leaving the top slot empty and using a 256MB module in the bottom allows 10.x to run normally. Please download and run this 9.x utility:
    PPC Checker
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G3CARDS/PPCchecker/
    If this utility reports this...
    PowerPC 750L (LoneStar, Rev2.2) Copper G3 PVR = 0x00088202
...then you have the CPU that cannot run RAM in the top slot.
-If you do not have the bad CPU and since you removed the top RAM module, you may have a bad bottom module. OSX is more sensitive to marginal RAM; 9.x may run fine but 10.x will complain.
-The bottom memory slot requires a low-profile module (1.5" or less, measured from the pins to the opposite edge). The top slot can take a standard-height module (2.0") or low-profile. Lift out the microprocessor card (very easy to do), turn it over and remove the bottom module. Replace the microprocessor card with the bottom slot empty and reinstall the RAM module that originally populated the top slot if it is at least 128MB in size. This will remove the question of a bad lower RAM card.
-MacOS 9.x's Drive Setup can fully prep the HD for both 9.x and 10.x; either is acceptable. I don't believe you need to zero again since it passed Test Disk in Drive Setup. (Don't use Disk First Aid.) When you initialize (erase the HD), you are given the option of HFS Standard or Extended; you want HFS+ (aka MacOS Extended). This is all you have to do when using 9.x's Drive Setup, located in the Utilities folder on the CD.

  • Mini Mac Boots to Gray Screen and thats it

So heres the deal. I got my girlfriend a mac mini core solo for Christmas. She bought herself a LCD and a wireless keyboard and mouse. She got the Microsoft Wireless Optical 3000. She plugged in the wireless receiver and then started her mac for the first time. The keyboard was apparently working, but none of the keys mapped correctly. So, my girlfriend meticulously figured out which key mapped to what and she went through the mac setup process. She got done and was put to the mac desktop. She inserted the wireless keyboard cd and installed the software that came with it. It prompted her to restart and she pressed restart and the mac restarted. Now, it goes to a gray screen, but with no log and nothing happens. The cd drive spins up and goes crazy. I cant get the cd to eject at all either.
I took the mac to my house and switched it out for my mac. I used all known working keyboard/mouse and monitor that I use for my mini mac and nothing happens still.
Please HELP! It was used for 15 minutes!
    Mini Mac Core Solo

    Shaxs, welcome!
Sorry to hear about your gift going wrong.
To get the disc out, you should be able to eject it by starting the Mini and holding down the mouse button until it pops out. Unless configuring the wireless keyboard messed up the Mini's idea of what a mouse button is.
Hopefully you can then boot from the install DVD by powering up while holding down the C key. Again, that might be problematic if C isn't where it used to be.
Since they haven't made the Core Solo model for a while, was this a refurb?

  • My Iphone will not open from on/off switch, we just have the iphone apple on screen and that is all, this does not turn off either?

Hi All, I was wondering if anyone can give me advice in my iphone5 which I have just got. It was working fine till I (Reset All) but since then all I have got is the Apple Logo on a black screen, I cannot get into any settings as like I say all I have is the Apple Logo and nothing else, I went back to the shop and they said it may take a day but this is 3days ago and the Logo is still there, I cannot turn on or off either. nightmare please can anyone help.
    Sofia

Have you tried resetting your device: Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Give it a minute and the "Slide to Unlock" screen should redisplay.
Just curious - what "shop" did you get your advice from?
    Cheers,

    It's starting in safe mode > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
First of all, do a PRAM reset. If it doesn't help, open Terminal and type:
    sudo nvram boot-args=""

  • My Photos app stopped working last week.  It opens to the welcome splash screen, but when i select get started, the wheel starts spinning and that's all that happens.  When I try to close it, it says it's creating a library, but never ends.

I have been using Photos since the update.  I had no problems until last week when it stopped working.  Despite the fact that I've been using it, it opens to the welcome splash screen with the "Get Started" button.  When I click it, the wheel starts spinning and that's all that happens until eventually force quit it using the apple menu.  Can anyone help?

OK, so apparently you have the MBW connected via the software equivelent of a crossover cable- ethernet frames but no routing.  Not sure what negative impact that has or doesn;t have. Certainly its not how the drive was intended to work - it would be far easier to just have a USB connection for that.
WD software in general has a very bad history. Note that some drives have been lost entirely due to incompatability with Mavericks - read the tips section here for mroe details, btu i would NOT use it.
I cant help you with WD software. But the first task is to access the drive and make sure you can communicate with it. I would go to the main drive to do that. From there you should be abke to remove the partition for the backup, and begin over with something less troublesome - such as Carbon Copy Cloner, Time MAchine ( i dont use it and did nt much like it) or , my preferred method, good old unix rsync.
In any event, your prpoblem is one of authorization. So first see if the drive is responding in general ( try to access it the normal way), then move to that particular volume.

did an update for my 4s now it tells me i need to connect to itunes but phone wont connect to itunes also i have got ios6 on my screen and thats all the phone will do

They will be gone from the iphone, but you should be syning all contacts to your computer regularly and should be importing all pics to your computer regularly, particularly before any update.
Have you failed to do this?

    Help appreciated.

Well, this is back with vengeance.
I've tried removing the Telestream software and the BlackBerry software and I still get a blank screen randomly. The last one happened last night when I tried to download AppCleaner to make sure all files from the above programs had been removed. As soon as I clicked 'download' it went blank and froze.
This is persistent, and the annoying thing is that I can't get it to restart when I want. I tried pulling out the power cord for a while, several PRAM resets, Safe Mode, try to get into recovery disk to check the drive, etc, etc.
Sometimes a few PRAM resets seem to work, other times it will go into the recovery disk, but most of the time it just seems to randomly boot up again after not working for ages. I can't find a pattern and I've tried this many times.
At the moment I can't get it working. I've just removed some Crucial RAM that was installed to see if that helped, but to no avail.
Bugging the life out of me.

Is there another way to close apps other than deleting them from the multitask bar.....I have a small crack in the bottom of my screen and that part of the screen does not recognize the touch.

There's generally no reason to be closing them that way at all. The apps you see in the recents bar are just that, apps that you used recently. Most of them are doing absolutely nothing. The only apps that are really doing anything in the background are ones that play music and ones that are using location services. Just leave them be.
    Best of luck.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
