You probably need an explanation. The MacBook Pro would use an SATA interface. The iBook line used the IDE (now known as parallel ATA) interface. They are not interchangeable.

    Which iBook do you have?

Which version of the OS is installed, and which version are you trying to install?
You could try starting up with Startup Manager and see if it will allow you to select the OS X install disc as the startup disk. If so, maybe you can proceed from there. I would recommend repairing the hard drive first since you are evidently having a bit of a problem with it.

  • Cloning iBook Hard Drive onto iMac - How?

    Hello Again Mac Experts:
You guys have never failed me yet so here's another:
Situation: I want to upgrade my internal hard drive on my iBook and so want to clone the original Hard Drive, OS and files onto my iMac before doing so. I was told "Carbon Copy Cloner" was an easy, solid program to do this operation with and so I downloaded it onto my iMac.
Issue: I have my iBook connected to my iMac via Ethernet cable and can bring up it's hard drive easily via Shareware. No problem there. The problem occurs when I start the Carbon Copy Cloner software. It immediately pops up with a window that reads - "CCC cannot find any local disks located on your system besides the start up disk. Please mount another local disk and try running CCC again" - and I can get no further. I've tried fooling around with different "mounting," rebooting, and such but nothing changes.
Problem: What am I failing to understand or negotiate properly here? Do I need to do this operation via a Fire Wire cable? Am I not mounting something correctly? What gives?!
Lost at sea again. S.O.S. Thanks!
    chaemo
P.S. Truthfully, I would prefer to install the OS for my iMac onto the iBook new hard drive (when I get it installed) and so did a pre-run trial but it said it couldn't install because of "bundling" incapatibility or something. Any thoughts on getting around that one!??

Shoot, on the previous, I forgot to click the "Yes, my questions has been answered" button.
Anyway, Dale thanks for your comments and suggestions on this matter for me. Your advice worked! FYI - here's what I previously posted:

Great, I think I'm good now!
Thanks for your help with this, sorry it took so long to respond, I had to purchase a Fire Wire and try a few things before I could figure it out.
As you suspected, I did indeed need to get a Fire Wire to do the cloning (Ethernet is not the proper cable to do it with it turns out). So while I'm at my local Mac store I asked the tech guy about it and he told me the cloning was easy to do simply by using the Mac Disk Utility app and that I didn't need to bother with any outside software to do it. So I tried that but couldn't ever get it to work because it kept indicating that the disk was "too large," and again, I could get no further. So I went back to CCC, got further along this time, but again, ran into the size problem (I'm thinking here, that if my technical computing skills were a bit further refined, either one of these apps should probably work) . Finally, I tried the Superduper software, as you and Dale suggested, and that did the trick!
I now have a cloned copy of my iBook Hard Drive on my iMac. Next step is to get a new hard drive installed on my iBook and then put the clone back into it. Any suggestions on how that is accomplished? Is it just a matter of copying it onto the new hard drive or is there certian procedures with certian protocols involved?? Still riding the clueless train as you can tell!
Thanks again very much for your help with all this, once again you all come through for me! Sincerely,

  • K8T Master 2 FAR; Hard Drive Questions About

    Greetings!
I just got off the Google bus and stubbed my toe on your doorstep.  What luck!
I have many questions, and it's getting harder to find answers for a mainboard that's not being sold "new" anymore.  I did see some other topics that go along lines similar to my own, but I figured it would be a good idea to open a new thread with my specific questions.
I have decided to split my questions into three parts.  This is part one, "hard drive" questions.
    HARD DRIVE RELATED:
Western Digital recently announced a new high-capacity SATA Raptor drive, with 150 GB of storage:
    1)  Can I mount two of them into my K8T Master 2 FAR system and "hardware stripe" them for Windows/XP?
....1A)  If yes, is there a minimum recommended BIOS that I should be running?
....1B)  If no, then would it be feasibile to "software stripe" them in Windows/XP Pro?
If I decide to proceed, I will be well-prepared to accept the risk of data loss that would occur if one drive were to crash.
I currently run my system with a removable SATA drive caddy for my system drive.  This makes it easy to swap OS's by swapping hard drives without opening my CPU case.  If I go with a dual-striped SATA drive arrangement and two Raptors, then I'll replace that removable caddy with a unit that can accomodate two SATA drives.
....1C)  Once in a blue moon, I get a BSOD after having swapped SATA drives.  It happens when I first boot Windows/XP after having run Linux.  Hot-swappable claims notwithstanding, I always swap drives while the system is powered down, although I don't typically shut off the hardware switch at the power power supply.  Are there any known issues or reports of other people having similar occurrences?
I also run some IDE devices for data and archival purposes.  My system is typically set up as follows:
    CH 0/0 - Data drive
    CH 0/1 - DVD burner
    CH 1/0 - Data drive
    CH 1/1 - Data drive
Recently, my system stopped "seeing" any hard drives on CH 1 drive 1.  Known good drives won't show up in the BIOS, and auto-detect doesn't "see" a drive in that position.  I have tried more than one drive, and the problem stays on that channel and position.  I swapped cables with a known good cable, and the problem stays on that channel and position.  For the time being, I have disconnected one of the data drives...but I'd really like to resolve this issue if possible.
....1D)  Are there any known problems or issues with "disappearing IDE devices" in the K8T Master 2 FAR?
    Thanks in advance!

Can't say, this is the first time I hear about SATA caddies....
Maybe a bad contact or so?
Sata is pretty sensitive to connection problems, or even folded cables for that matter...

  • Stupid iBook G4 Hard Drive question

    Hi,
I feel extremely stupid for this post; however, I need to replace my hard drive. The system info states the drive as ATA. Does this imply SATA, PATA, will EIDE work ? Can anyone suggest a drive as well as as decent external drive enclosure to swap the data.
I'm not certain whether to purchase which of the three formats above, plus I haven't cracked the case since doing the memory update two years ago.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Kevin:
Your iBook will support a 2.5" (P)ATA/IDE HDD, like most PowerPC Macs. These drives come in 7200 rpm and 5400 rpm up to 100 GB in capacity, and 5400 rpm up to 250 GB in capacity. Here is a list of drives. You can use the sidebar to screen for capacity, rotational speed and manufacturer. Most drives come with a manufacturer's warranty of 3 years, with the exception of Seagate, which is 5 years.
Can anyone suggest a drive as well as as decent external drive enclosure to swap the data.
I have a couple of these neat enclosures The neatest thing about them is that they have the more reliable Oxford 911+ chipset.
I haven't cracked the case since doing the memory update two years ago.
The iBook G4 is the most difficult Mac laptop on which to install a HDD, as to have to almost completely disassemble the computer to get to the HDD. However, it is doable, with screwdrive skills, lots of concentration and some gentle force. You will find directions at ifixit. You did not post the specs of your computer so you will need to navigate to the right one to find directions for your computer.
Here are few tips you may find helpful:
    • Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
    • Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the Torx 8 screw driver is critical.
    • I use small medicine cups one for the screws in each step. I nest them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc. (Some users report cutting up the screw guide and placing the applicable section in each container.)
    • Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Indeed, some users have pulled the socket off the logic board! Use needle nose pliers or tweezers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
    • Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so as not to leave marks.
    • Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • IBook SE Graphite Hard Drive Question (2 parts)

Hello, all. I have been an on-again/off-again Mac user since 2006...but have used Macs now almost 100% exclusively since the end of August. And it's been great. I have enjoyed it so much that I bought an almost perfect iBook SE that was used in the Rochester School System. Clearly, this iBook sat in a storeroom for many years, because it is cosmetically and functionally perfect. (Not bad for $32)
Anyway...the hard drive is rather loud. It spins freely, and isn't making the crunching "death-soon-to-come" sounds. It's just LOUD. It sounds like a server. Question 1) Is this typical for other iBook users?
Question 2) Since the HDD replacement on iFixit looks EXTREMELY difficult, can this model iBook boot from a USB "flash drive" if need be?
Anyway...lovin' the Mac experience. (And as a professional PBX Technician, having a quality product is important to me)
    John

If you own a second edition iBook with firewire i would recommend an external firewire HD. Booting from Usb 1 is extremely slow and very complicated from a stick because you need to go into open firware, i havn't done this yet, but some linux guys say it's possible.
If you want to swap the HD (the old drives were extremely loud) you can use a 50% shortcut which sounds very rude, but it is efficient.
After popping open the iBook, remove the RAM shield and the screws that are located in the lower left corner, the HD lies underneath. There is a speaker cable coming out from there which you can leave plugged it and disconnect only the other end near the speaker.
The plan is to bend the metal shield in that section upwardly (after carefully removing necessary screws, let the speaker cable slide throgh the hole) in order to get hold of the three screws holding the HD. Leave the HD cable connected to the logicboard, only disconnect the HD.

  • Internal to external hard drive questions (G4 iBook 10.3.9)

    Hello All,
I have a G4 iBook that the internal hard drive has crashed. At the Apple store, they cannot get the drive to mount.... I have a friend that thinks he can get it to spin, and therefore thinks he can get any info that is not corrupted off the drive. That would be way cool!! He only wants me to bring him the drive, and is going to use a device that plugs into the drive just like it would in any computer, and at the other and it is USB on the end he will plug into his PC to make the transfer. Here comes where I need help. He is a PC guy, and knows nothing of Mac. If I buy an external hard drive will it need to be formatted HFS+ first in order to transfer any data that might still be good? I herd that most external drives come formatted in Fat32. Another thing is I would like to use this external hard drive for both my Mac at home, and a PC at work. i have herd that fat32 will work for both, but have herd some people having trouble with backing up a mac on a fat 32 partition.
If anyone has any other ideas of how to get what ever is left on my drive so that I can recover it, and also how I can use an external HD for mac and pc (although not simaltaniously)that would be cool.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Thanks,
    Sean

I have encountered no problems with fat32 formatted drives. I format my flash drives the same way too. For backing up files or using the drives for file transfer between a Mac and a PC it's very convenient. You can't use a fat32 formatted drive for cloning PPC Mac hard drives. Your friend may also find he can't access the hard drive through a Windoze computer.

  • A Cautionary Tale + Question about ibook hard drive

I made the switch to Mac almost two years ago; I love my ibook G4, but I wish I had purchased AppleCare. Now I've got an odd HD problem and I'm wondering if anyone else has had something similar happen.
Right now the HD is OK; obviously, I'm using it to post this message. But fairly often I will get the whirly, the computer will absolutely freeze (no F9, no option-command-escape, nothing). Guess what makes it better? Tilting the entire computer up at about a 30 degree angle! Everything goes back to normal--the HD kicks back into place, the whirly goes away, and my computer is fine--until I place the computer on a level surface again.
I have a theory as to why this is happening, and I'm wondering whether it's correct. Stupidly, I have in the past carried my ibook around while it's open. Recently I heard an odd groaning sound coming from the HD while doing so. I bet that I scratched the HD somehow or loosened it in some way that it only works when it's tilted in a certain direction. Do I need to replace the HD? I'm on level ground right now, and, knock on wood, everything's OK.
Any similar experiences out there, or responses to my theory? Thank you.
    iBook G4 800   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Andrew, if you're booted from a Mac OS X 10.3.x (Panther) install disk, you should be able to open the Disk Utility from the Installer menu without actually installing Mac OS X. What does the Disk Utility tell you about your iBook's hard drive? Is the S.M.A.R.T. status failing? Are you able to "repair disk" and/or "repair disk permissions" on the hard drive? Have you run the Apple Hardware Test CD? Although it does seem to sound like a hard drive hardware issue, before you go about replacing the hard drive, it might be a good idea to go through these troubleshooting steps to eliminate things like a bad logic board first. What if you go about the cost and time to replace the hard drive but it's actually the ATA controller on the logic board that's the problem?

See the thread "2.5 inch HD?".
    Also, does the RPM matter?
Yes, a 5400 RPM drive will get to the data faster than a 4200 RPM drive.
I heard that 5400RPM caused the iBook to overheat is this true?
No, a 5400 RPM will work just fine.
    Will this hard drive work?
    Yes that drive is compatible.

  • IBook hard drive disappears!

I installed Leopard on my ibook last week and it has been running pretty much problem free for the past week. This morning I woke the computer from sleep and it was running very slow, and then it froze. I went to restart, but I was greeted with the flashing question mark. I then grabbed my 10.5 install disk to see if I was going to need to reinstall the OS. Long story short, the hard drive is gone! The installer does not even recognize that I have one!
I would assume that the hard drive has failed and it is just time for a new one, but I am looking for some confirmation (I would think that the OS would still "see" the hard drive even if it had failed). I had the hard drive replaced last May by a Mac repair company (found them on the web) and the hard drive has a 3 year warranty.....But I also had the logic board replaced about a month later by Apple (at this point I am wishing I just got a new Macbook). I am not sure if there is way to narrow down what the is the issue (logic board or hard drive).
I basically need to try and figure out who to send this to for warranty work (Apple or MacService), or if the problem might just be with OS 10.5.
I have an appointment with a Genius bar, but I need to drive about 2 hours to get to one since the closest one had no appointments available.
    Any help is appreciated!

Here is an article that may help:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58042
There are several steps to follow. Hopefully you will be able to reconnect with your start up disk. At this point, I would guess that it has to do with Leopard, and does not represent a hardware problem.
If there is absolutely no sign of the hard drive, and even Disk Utility can't find it, there is a chance that the hard drive has become unplugged from the logic board. The cable plugs in and is covered with yellow tape. The edges of this tape can stick to the aluminum shield and it's conceivable that the connector might work loose from the socket. Especially if it wasn't fully seated when the logic board was replaced.
Try the steps in the article, and if nothing works, please post back.
    Good luck!

  • Ibook hard drive dead

My friend has an ibook that she spilled some sqrite on several months ago (yes i know this is very bad) but it has worked fine since then and we have kept our fingers crossed. This week though the computer will not start and the genius at the apple store said the drive is dead, which is understandable. The warrenty runs out in january (she doesn't have apple care as of now) but that doesn't really matter because apple would not cover this anyway. My question is how can she fix it? She doesn't have much money so an expensive repair may be out of the question. I have thought about trying to put in a new hard drive myself seeing as how her warrenty is almost up anyway but i don't really know how hard that is, i've never reaplaced a laptop hard drive before. Ideas?

At the time of the spill all of the above cautions were taken. After a day or 2 it was turned back on and had been functioning like normal until this weekend. At this point it will start to turn on but when it hits the blue screen before the login screen it will sit there forever. I tried to run disk repair, but that gave an error. When i took it to the apple store today the guy plugged in a firewire drive and booted off of it then ran disk utility. When disk utility opened the ibook's hard drive showed up red, and the guy said that meant it was dead. He could tell something had been spilled on it and i told him it was a surgary liquid and he said that with sugar it doesn't necessarily destroy the circuit right away, but that over time the circuit could eat away at it and then could get messed up. So because the computer could boot off of the external drive at the store i infer that the motherboard etc is fine (at least for now anyway)

  • Dead iBook hard drive

My computer (iBook G4, OS X, 933 mhz processor, 256 RAM, 40 GB hard drive, a few months out of warranty) just died and I think the problem is the hard drive. The final demise was preceded by clicking associated with freezing and system crashes. Now the computer won't start (I get as far as the pale screen with the apple and wheel before it freezes). When I attempt to verify the hard drive using disk utility I receive an error message. I have two questions:
    1. Can you confirm that the problem is with the hard drive?
    2. There are no Mac stores of any description near where I now live, making it difficult to replace the hard drive. Is it possible to use an external hard drive instead?

    Hi James,
First thing is some clarification. When you say "pale screen" is it grey or blue? Can you still here the hard drive spinning/clicking? Do you get any other messages?
    1) If it is a Blue screen sometimes with a spinning disc cursor or any messages to restart etc, you will first want to make sure to disconnect all external devices (USB Mouse/Keyboard, iPod, or anything else connected). Restart
2)Next thing is to do if that doesn't work is to remove the top module of your RAM (if you have two RAM modules) and restart
    a. If it still happens then try replacing the bottom module with good
    memory and/or top. RAM info
    3) Try resetting your PRAM. Hold down -option-P-R during startup till you hear the startup chime twice. This will erase all RAM disks if you have any. More info on PRAM
Does any sounds or beeps happen when you start up your computer? Do any lights like the CapLock come on? Is it plugged in? This information will help with the diagnosis

  • Swapping an iPod hard drive for an iBook hard drive?

I have a broken iPod which should have a fully functional hard drive. And I have an iBook G4 with a fried hard drive. I took the ipod apart and pulled the hard drive. My question is, can I put the iPod hard drive in the iBook? They're both IDE drives right? So it should just be a matter of going through the 200 step iBook disassembly procedure right?
The iPod hard drive isnt large but I'd like to resurect the iBook if at all possible.

    Duane wrote:
nlmart, Welcome to the discussion area!
One thing to be aware of is that Apple has always recommended against using the iPod as a system hard drive. Presumably the operation as a system hard drive is more stressful than that of a music file server.
Performance would also suffer compared to even a 4200RPM 2.5" drive. Not to mention that most 2.5" 5400RPM (or even 7200RPM) drives will absolutely blow away a 1.8" iPod drive in terms of transfer rate.

  • Transferring Itunes data and Library to new hard-drive question

    Hello,
First I want to state that I made a mistake when I transferred my music to a new bigger harddrive. My bad.
I look here for some guidance, I read this article after the fact: http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive so it was too late for me and I got these "!" signs on all my song. I have over 5000 songs (not including podcasts, movie and TV shows.
I tried to move my library (succesfully) in my new hard drive so I could keep my laptop clean of all music.
I though I will be clever and replace the target links into the "Itunes Library.xml" and "Itunes music Library.xml" files. Well not so clever because I still have the issue.
My question: Does anybody knows what else should be done to fix this issue (if fixable)? I would try to avoid linking all my music one at the time by using the "locate" function that ITunes pop up when you try to start a song.
It is also too bad that you must do it one song at the time, I calculated that if I do 20 songs a day it's going to take me 250 days and more...
Thanks for any idea/solutions you may have
    Thierry

I though I will be clever and replace the target links into the "Itunes Library.xml" and "Itunes music Library.xml" files. Well not so clever because I still have the issue.
iTunes does not use these files.
They are created only for other apps to access the iTunes library.
Does anybody knows what else should be done to fix this issue (if fixable)?
See this -> iTunes Track CPR v1.3
"This script attempts to locate the files of so-called "dead tracks"--iTunes tracks designated with (!)--that you assume are not actually missing but are still located in the iTunes Music folder in their "iTunes File Order" (Music -> Artist -> Album -> file.xxx). Any correct files found will be added to iTunes and will replace the "dead track" in each playlist it appears in (except Smart Playlists). Most tag data will also be rescued."
