IBook has insomnia

My iBook G4, running Tiger, is having trouble falling asleep.
Used to be, I'd close it and it'd go to sleep immediately. You hear the drive spin down, the little flashing light comes on, and there, it's asleep.
Now, I've been noticing a problem.
It doesn't go to sleep right away. I haven't really documented its behavior much, but I've noticed that after closing the cover, several minutes later I'll hear it do it's sleep spin-down. Even closed it's easy to wake up as well.
I'm afraid I don't have much more than that at the moment.
Anyone got any ideas on what the story might be, or what I might do to correct it? Short of reinstalling the OS, with the lengthy series of upgrade installations that would entail?
Thanks.

I have about 0.5 GB at the moment - a few large files waiting to xfr to another drive.
I just noticed something tonight, however. I think it has to do with the trackpad button. I closed the cover, and as I pressed down, the Apple light came on and I heard the drive activate. Opened it up, and it went to sleep. Close it, it's fine - until I press down on the front edge enough to click the trackpad button. Light goes back on. Open it up, wait a few seconds, and it's back to sleep.
Also, if I close the lid but don't press down, no light until I open it again.
It seems my iBook is momentarily ignoring whatever instruction tells it to ignore the trackpad button when the lid closes.
I think this is due to a delay in switching over to full sleep mode. I've timed it. Close the lid, light goes out, open the lid, light comes back on, then in 30 seconds (from initially closing the lid) it switches over to sleep mode. Screen goes black, flashing light, etc.
Does this sound like a good estimate of what's causing it? And any thoughts on why this might happen?
Thanks

  • Old ibook has died; Can I get my thesis off hard-drive and on to macbook?

    Howdy,
My trusty old ibook has finally died (which is understandable; it is some six years old and has been around the world with me, and has served me well)... however, i didn't have the foresight to get some very important files (my thesis among them) backed up elsewhere...
When I attempt to turn on the ibook, the screen stays black, i hear one or two chirps, and then nothing... if i put my ear close, i can hear the extremely soft sound of something spinning (the harddrive, i assume).
I have attempted to access the ibook harddrive by connecting it to my new macbook via firewire and starting up the ibook while pressing "T", but to no avail; it does not appear on the macbook as a disk, or anything at all.
Is there anything else I can try to access the important data on my ibook, and transfer files onto my macbook? Thank you so much for any help and advice... it will be much appreciated!

    Dewfall:
Ronda's suggestion to try Disk Warrior is a good idea. Actually there are three excellent directory maintenance and repair utilities (including Disk Warrior): Tech Tool Pro, Disk Warrior and DriveGenius
These all do a great job of repairing directories and have revived many a seemingly dead HDD. TechTool Pro and DriveGenius do a number of other things, and even they you purchase one of these and it does not work, it is a good tool to have in your toolkit. I own both TechTool Pro and Disk Warrior and use one or the other at least monthly.
However, your main concern at the moment is to rescue your data, and if the drive is viable at all, placing it in an enclosure and connecting to another mac will help. The directions linked in my earlier post are very explicit and helpful. The enclosure linked there is the best price I have seen anywhere, and it does have the more reliable Oxford 911+ chipset. If you decide to remove the HDD here are few tips you may find helpful:
    • Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
    • Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the Torx 8 screw driver is critical.
    • I use small medicine cups one for the screws in each step. I nest them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc. (Some users report cutting up the screw guide and placing the applicable section in each container.)
    • Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Use needle nose pliers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
    • Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so as not to leave marks.
    • Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.
Please do post back should you have further questions or comments.

Being new to iBook publishing I need to know if stats are available to determine how many times my iBook has been downloaded. Can anyone help please? I need to persuade someone that this really is worthwhile. Mr Ignorant.

The only people who can possibly assist you with this is Apple Customer Relations, call your local Apple contact number and ask for Customer Relations then explain your situation clearly and politely (be firm but don't rant).
You might want to investiage what the local laws are regarding defective goods and 'fit for use' definitions on warranties etc. Consumer Protection can be a useful tool to use or bargain with if needed ...

  • Once an iBook has been exported to the iPad, how can that book be moved to a different iPad or back to iBooks Author?

Once an iBook has been exported to the iPad, how can that book be moved to a different iPad or back to iBooks Author?

You can't simply move it directly between iPads.
In your example, you'd find that .ibook file in your iTunes account on your computer and then email or sync it to the school's iPad. Similar to how you did with yours....maybe you got it off a server and can repeat that process.
Then delete it off your iPad and either delete or flag your copy in iTunes to not be put back when you sync in the future.

  • IBooks has not been able to load or update for weeks. IPad2 Running 5.1.1

iBooks has not been able to load or update for weeks...stuck.
    IPad2 Running 5.1.1

    - What is the exact wording of the error message?
    - What happens when yu try to update to iOS 5.1? Error messages?
    - Try a reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next would be to restore from backup. This will also update the iOS.
    - Then restore to factory defaults/new iPod which will also update the iOS.

    Hi Ken,
Thanks for the reply. The project I am working on is a test project for a customer. They could potentially want a number of their educational subjects presented as an interactive text book. The intent of this first project with them is to establish a logical workflow that will allow us to efficiently estimate costs and allow for review throughout the design process. Having worked with customers on creative projects in the past I can anticipate that they will want a number of changes made once they see a working version of the interactive text book.
It is a grim reality that no project can be fully edited and planned prior to working on it and I know revisions and changes are always made once the customer can see their product. It is ok with me if there is no easy way to pass the text back and forth from the customer and me without having to reformat everything but I just want to know that is the way it works in order to provide a realistic time estimate for the project.
My hope was I would be able to export the formatted text, allow them to make edits and then reimport that formatted text. The style sheets I am using are from one of the iBooks Author templates.
Do you know if there is a way to use (or export ) this style sheet so it can be used in a Pages Document?
Or, would the best option be to have the customer install iBooks Author? This would require the customer to have a mac and the software so it doesn't work for all cases.
Another idea I was considering would be to export the book as a PDF and have the customer add markup and notes to the PDF.
All of these options do not seem too great to me.
I am open to any ideas.
    Thanks,
    Rob

Well,  you can try this: right click the file, go down to encode file, and reencode it for the Mac.

  • An iBook has reversed the way it loads and scrolls.

An iBook has reversed the way it loads and scrolls i.e. instead of turning the page right to left to go to the next page I need to swipe left to right. But my other book are fine. Can anyone help?

I have, but if I don't have that particular external hard drive connected when my time machine backup hard drive is connected, then I don't think it is all backed up together.  It is getting too complicated to get out all this equipment every time I want to buy some music.

My iPad mini iBook has a white blank screen. How do I fix it?

Do a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears, ignore the red slider if that appears.  Also, make sure it is plugged into an electrical outlet so it is on the charger.

  • How can I tell if one of my iBooks has an update available?

I was listening to a podcast where the author of a particular iBook, which I have purchased, stated that there was an updated version available.
    My questions are:
Is there some way to know that there is an update to an iBook I have purchased and have installed on my iPad? Maybe someting like the 'Updates' section of the iTunes and App Store?
Is there some way to tell what version of an iBook I currently have installed?
    Regards,

Open Termninal.app (which is in /Applications/Utilities/), and type the following (and Return key) in the Terminal window:
    last
this will show recent logins in reverse time order (from new to old). If the output has too many lines, then
    last | less
you can use SPACE and 'b' keys to go down/up screen. Hit 'q' to quit less. Or
    last > logins.txt
then a file 'logins.txt' will be created in your Home folder, and you can open it with your favorite text editor (e.g., TextEdit.app).

  • The text in a lot of my books I have downloaded in IBooks has disappeared. It is mostly the older books on my IPad.  The books are there but the text is missing. How do I get the text back?

On my IPad, the books I have downloaded are there; however, the text has disappeared. It only happened with the books that were older. Any idea how I can get the text back on these books?

Try closing the iBooks app. Press the home button to get to the home screen if you're not already there. Then double click the home button. Locate the iBooks icon at the bottom. Hold your finger down on it until a red minus appears. Tap the red minus. Press the home button to return to normal. Then relaunch iBooks.
If that fails, delete the books, then you can redownload them under the Purchased tab in "Store."

  • Two month old iBook has problems waking up, I think

My coworker asked if I could post this message about her problem for her. She just bought her iBook over the summer:
"I fell asleep last night with puter on and internet on, etc., which i've done PLENTY of times in past with other computers... i woke up this morning and had REALLY hard time getting the screen to come up again... screen was left up all night, moving mouse didn't ignite anything, plenty of power, cause cord plugged in... this had also happened once before where I had a hard time getting it to wake up or whatever it was doing, held power button down long time, short time, moved mouse, nothing was working, i gave up, came back an hour later after my frustration over and it started, the fan started, etc. etc..."
She only had AOL and IE open at the time she forgot about the computer and went to bed, if that means anything.
    Any help?

First-advise her IE is horrible, she should be using firefox, camino, opera or safari-anything but IE.
Secondly-has she tried this:Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
Or, try restarting from the OS disc(insert disc, restart computer holding the "C" key), go under Disk utility and repair permissions.

  • Ibooks has frozen...message states cannot connect to itunes

I went into Ibooks and it has frozen.  the message states cannot connect to itunes store.  I have updated all itunes.  what is the problem?

You have to put iPhone into Recovery Mode and Restore. Open iTunes on your computer. Connect iPhone to computer with USB Cable. Hold both home and power buttons for about 20 seconds until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode. Click the Restore button of iTunes.

  • IBooks has stopped working on my iPad2

After the upgrade to iBooks, the app has stopped working on my iPad2.  I tap the icon and the app opens up but then shuts down again after a second or so. When I go to the app store I can't download it again from my purchases, since the only option is to OPEN - and the same thing happens when I try that.  Either the upgrade doesn't function correctly with the latest iOS upgrade, or there's something screwy with the app itself.  Anyone have a clue as to what is going on here?

    ergoboard wrote:
Tried re-set, re-start and removing and downloading - and nothing works, the app still pops up, stays for a second or so and then disappears, although it seemingly stays in memory. It just ain't working and I see from other discussions that other people are having different problems with iBooks since the upgrade.  Is Apple trying to drive us to Kindle, do you think - some response from someone at Apple would be useful, but I guess they're happy to let these forums run, floundering around to try to find an answer to a problem Apple probably knows about already!
These are strictly user-to-user forums hosted by Apple. Apple does not participate here. It's just users here. If you want to talk to Apple you can, of course, call Apple support, talk to a "Genius" at an Apple store, etc.
I'm using iBooks 3.0.1 with iOS 6.0.1 (and previously iOS 6) with no problems so there must be something unique about your iPad and installed software that is causing an iBooks crash.
Since you have tried restarting, resetting, and reinstallation of iBooks about the only thing left is to backup your iPod and restore the software on your system to see if that corrects the problem.

  • HT4059 My purchased ibook has been in a "downloading" state for two days, on both my library, and in the store. Any solutions?

My purchased iBook is stuck in a downloading state. Any solution?

Thank you. I know you're all users and not official Apple tech support, but I also know that the results of these discussions make their way up to search engines, and that Apple has to be aware that the issues discussed here happen.
As for the link to contact the iTunes support, I have already used that. I have a "ticket number" in their system, and have signed up for Apple to call me tonight after work. I was on hold with them yesterday for about 40 minutes, but had to hang up when my children's doctor called (they are both sick).
I was just venting, in the hopes that my venting would find others in the same troubled spot and we could share our frustratons together.
Thanks for trying to help and for listening.
