IBook has troubles starting up: (?)

The iBook of a friend has troubles starting up. She needs an apple for her studies and has had nothing but trouble with this iBook. She has already have to replace the motherboard and faulty RAM at the store where she bought it.
The most recent trouble is this: sometimes the iBook won't start or it takes a long time before it does. On the screen appears (?). Also when she's working with the laptop, the respons time is sometimes very long.
Her teachers said her that this problem is caused by the hard disk. But I've found a topic of a forum, where somebody had the exact same problem and where replacing the HD didn't help.
Does somebody have an idea what could be an answer?
Also, the store only gives a one-year warranty, but since there have been so many parts replaced, isn't there a two year warranty?
Thanks in advance.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.

How long has it been since hard drive maintenance was performed? If it's been awhile, try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see the normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar ("Macintosh HD" unless it's been renamed). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps out performance.

  • Ibook has trouble starting up, and when it does, it freezes immediately

    Hey folks,
Last time I had problems with my ibook G4, everyone on here was extremely helpful, so I'm hoping you can help me out once more
Today I was using my computer as I usually do, and it froze, something I've never experienced. After shutting down my computer and restarting it, it wouldn't boot. The gray screen with the "thinking" wheel went fine, but when it got to the blue screen that usually has the "starting mac os x" window and progress bar, nothing happened. The window didn't pop up, and the computer was stuck on that blue screen. When I restarted, the same thing happened. I couldn't get my desktop to load.
After removing the battery for about 20 minutes and trying again, the computer got past that blue screen and loaded my desktop. However, after about 2 minutes, everything completely froze again, leaving me where I started.
Now I can get past the blue screen MAYBE 1/5 of the time after multiple restarts using control, command, power, but when it does, everything freezes. Luckily I was able to get it to work long enough to send myself important files (not a great time for this to happen considering I have a 12 page paper due tomorrow, haha) and check the S.M.A.R.T. status, which was fine and normal.
Anyone know what's going on?? Thanks!!!!!

    hi there.
i can't say what the problem is but i can perhaps show you some ways to find it out.
firs thing i would do is to reset the P-Ram. shut your computer down and press "command" + "option (alt)" + "p" + "r" right after you pressed the start button and hold this combination until you hear the startup gong for tree times.
this can allready help - if not, try to boot from a system-cd. you can check the drive from system disc - do this and also check premissions.
if you have a "hardware-check" cd, you can use it to check your hardware.
post again if this doesn't help.

  • My new macbook air sometimes has trouble starting up. It gets stuck at various stages. I have reinstalled Lion twice. That solves the problem for a few days and then in reoccurs. Any ideas? Thanks, Marty

My new macbook air sometimes has difficulty booting up. I reinstalled Lion twice. That soves the problem temporarily and then after a few days it reoccurs. It also has trouble at times opening mail or Microsoft Word. Any ideas? Thanks, Marty

    Marty,
Can you elaborate on what you mean by "difficulty" during the boot sequence? When/where is the difficulty occurring? Are you getting to the Apple logo? Apple logo with spinning gear? Blue screen? Login window? There's many phases to the boot sequence and when it fails can go a long way in determing what's causing the problem.
Also, what sort of third party software is installed? It sounds like at a minimum you've installed Microsoft Office? Anything else?
Lastly, after you reinstall Lion do you perform a restore from backup or remigrate your data/content right back into the new OS? If so that could potentially be the problem right there. But truthfully there's more information that needs to be provided to begin recommending troubleshooting steps.

It just says not connected, and as soon as it bails to menu, it connects again and will play for another minute before doing the same thing all over again.

    Hello David,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your Apple TV is having trouble streaming videos from iTunes on your computer. This symptom could have a variety of causes, and I'd suggest the following initial troubleshooting steps.
In addition to restarting your devices (Apple TV, computer, router), try the tips in this article, starting with "Check your home network:"

  • Has anyone started having trouble with google calendar syncing / showing up on their iPhone 4s or iPad? As of today my google calendar not longer appears on either device.

Has anyone started having trouble with google calendar syncing / showing up on their iPhone 4s or iPad 2? As of today it no longer shows up. Thanks.

Let me re-qualify my issue. Under my Google Calendar account I have the main calendar I originally set up when setting up my account. I then set up several other calendars under this same account such as events, work, family and so on. All the calendars showed up on my iPhone and iPad with no problem and worked great for a year and a half now until yesterday. My main calendar does still show up but the others no longer appear on my devices. Going on line to look at my Google calendar/calendars everything is fine with all of them. Any thoughts as to why they no longer show up on my iPhone or iPad? Thanks again.

  • Old ibook has died; Can I get my thesis off hard-drive and on to macbook?

    Howdy,
My trusty old ibook has finally died (which is understandable; it is some six years old and has been around the world with me, and has served me well)... however, i didn't have the foresight to get some very important files (my thesis among them) backed up elsewhere...
When I attempt to turn on the ibook, the screen stays black, i hear one or two chirps, and then nothing... if i put my ear close, i can hear the extremely soft sound of something spinning (the harddrive, i assume).
I have attempted to access the ibook harddrive by connecting it to my new macbook via firewire and starting up the ibook while pressing "T", but to no avail; it does not appear on the macbook as a disk, or anything at all.
Is there anything else I can try to access the important data on my ibook, and transfer files onto my macbook? Thank you so much for any help and advice... it will be much appreciated!

    Dewfall:
Ronda's suggestion to try Disk Warrior is a good idea. Actually there are three excellent directory maintenance and repair utilities (including Disk Warrior): Tech Tool Pro, Disk Warrior and DriveGenius
These all do a great job of repairing directories and have revived many a seemingly dead HDD. TechTool Pro and DriveGenius do a number of other things, and even they you purchase one of these and it does not work, it is a good tool to have in your toolkit. I own both TechTool Pro and Disk Warrior and use one or the other at least monthly.
However, your main concern at the moment is to rescue your data, and if the drive is viable at all, placing it in an enclosure and connecting to another mac will help. The directions linked in my earlier post are very explicit and helpful. The enclosure linked there is the best price I have seen anywhere, and it does have the more reliable Oxford 911+ chipset. If you decide to remove the HDD here are few tips you may find helpful:
    • Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
    • Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the Torx 8 screw driver is critical.
    • I use small medicine cups one for the screws in each step. I nest them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc. (Some users report cutting up the screw guide and placing the applicable section in each container.)
    • Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Use needle nose pliers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
    • Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so as not to leave marks.
    • Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.
Please do post back should you have further questions or comments.
    Cheers

  • Trouble starting up when cold

I bought my power mac about 5 years ago. Last year I started having trouble starting up when the machine was cold. I put a heater on the unit for about 30 minutes in the morning and then it would start up ok. Through the summer and once the weather got warmer there was no problem.
Now with the start of fall and cold nights, I seem to be having the same problem.
I am concerned that the system drive has five years of usage and am thinking of swapping it out. Any other thoughts???

Clone it weekly or twice a month.
    Rotate and replace recycle drives
Backup your data even more - daily and weekly sets
In 5 yrs drives have more than doubled in performance, and other than in last month the price per GB (and MB/sec) has dropped.
SSDs are now pppular system boot drives, 10K drives have improved, 2TB $150-200 for media data and backup
Clone your system twice and if it has trouble swap it out and test/zero the drive.
Last year? you don't run on a bad tire or a system having trouble except to pull the drive/tire and put on spare.
There are procedures for repairing a sytem and drives, and then you get into "Why" and troubleshooting causes if necessary.

Looks like a bug somewhere in PS - would be interesting to find out if it's happening to more than just us.
Actually this looks a lot like a bug with a GPU driver.
Has the issue reoccurred since you turned off GPU usage?
My trouble is I just use PS and expect it to work.
Well, as Adobe did not make your computer, OS, GPU, … you have to do your own trouble-shooting to verify if the issue is actually with an Adobe application or with another component.

  • Portege A100 has suddenly started freezing

My Portege A100 has suddenly started freezing for no good reason.
It also has trouble powering on sometimes in that the blue light comes on the harddrive spins up but not a lot happens and the screen remains blank.
Other times it will get into windows and allow me to use it then all of a sudden stop responding completely.
It does this in safe mode as well ad from a cold boot.
The odd thing is that it seems to be triggered physically sometimes but I couldn't swear to this and it may just be a coincidence.
    any ideas?

    Hi
You description sounds very strange because the issue what you have described happens sometimes. Possibly its only a software malfunction???
How long does the OS runs on the notebook???
What do you think about the reinstallation by using the Recovery CD?
Such reinstallation and fresh OS could sometimes solve the frizzing issues.
But if the notebook will not power up so you should test other suggestion.
You should remove power pack and ac adaptor from the notebook. Then wait several time (10-15min). Put the power pack into the notebook and connect the AC adaptor.
    Then start the notebook.

  • IBook will not start up!

My iBook will not start up all the way. It gets to the gray apple screen and just spins.(3hrs) I tried everything. It will not start up with 10.3 CD or OS9. It will start up with nortons CD but you cant see the Hard Drive. Hardware test CD starts and every thing checks out fine. What to do. I hope its not its final day.

    Paul,
Do you have OS X 10.3 installed on it?
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, and repair permissions on it.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to helps things out.
If it won't start up in Safe Mode, you can try Single User Mode and fsck, but if Safe Mode won't do it for you, fsck may not, either.
Keep Norton far, far away from any hard drive with OS X installed on it. DiskDoctor is known as DiskDoctor Kevorkian around here. It finds non-existent "errors" and sets about "correcting," them, killing your hard drive in the process.
If none of Apple's own disk repair procedures work (Safe Mode, Disk Utility from the Install disc, or fsck), it may be wise to invest in DiskWarrior. It can often find your hard drive and repair it when Apple's own utilities cannot. DiskWarrior has saved my hard drive more than once.
    Good luck.
