Ibook hotter than usual

I have a 2 year old ibook g4 1.42ghz with 512 ram and lately the fan has been going off constantly. I don't know if it's the hard drive's fan or the computer's fan (Although by looking at the temps I think is the CPU). The computer always seats on my desk, so I don't think it has trouble to get air. The applications that I usually run are Mail, Safari, Adium, and iTunes. This is what I always have running on the computer but lately, as i said, the fan goes off very frequently. My temperatures are these:
CPU top 69 C
Battery 32 C
Memory/Power 53 C
HD 47 C
I was wondering what can I do to lower the temperature on the CPU. Or, perhaps, am i starting to see a problem with the logic board?
thank you in advance.

So I opened the computer, took a look at it and everything seemed fine.. So I turned it back on and figured that it wouldnt hurt to take a look at the processes and to my surprise I had a printer driver eating over 60% of my memory even though I wasnt connected to a printer. So I killed it, and within few minutes my computer went back to the normal temperature.
thanks a lot all of you guys,

  • 'Late 2009' iMac running hotter than usual (Power-related)

For the past month or so, my 27" iMac (2.66 GHz i5) has been running hotter than usual (heat management has been terrible on these things for years). Using iStat Menus, I've tracked the culprit down to the power system, with the board and primary/secondary heat sinks regularly approaching 90º C (the secondary heat sink has actually hit 90º). The fans are ramping up as I would expect, but I'm a bit concerned over the frequency with which this happens. It seems like programs that, in the past, would not have taxed the CPU as much are suddenly ramping up to 100% usage, which obviously heats up the power supply. The only thing I can think of that's different is Mavericks (10.9.4). I know it has a few new bells and whistles that are supposed to use the CPU more efficiently and pull less power in the long run, but it seems like the exact opposite is happening.
Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions (short of rolling back to Snow Leopard, which I might do)? Is this a sign that the Mac is on its way out?

If the machine suddenly shuts down on its own or kernel panics, I'd be concerned.  Do not attempt to modify anything internally except ensuring the RAM is to stated to be Late 2009 iMac compatible.  Not all 1066 MHz PC3-8500 DDR3 SO-DIMMs (204-pin) RAM are alike.  http://www.crucial.com/ http://www.macsales.com/ and http://www.datamem.com/ all sell RAM by age of computer and model name.  Do not get ValueRAM.  Only get lifetime warranty RAM.

  • MBP running hotter than usual and shutting off randomly

    Hey everyone,
I have a MBP 2.16Ghz, it's about 20 months old. About a year ago I had some problems with it and Apple replaced my battery and my motherboard. The machine was running fine without any problems. This week I realized that the MBP was becoming hotter than normal and that the fans were running a lot more frequently. Eventually the MBP shut down on me randomly while running it on an almost full battery. I then decided to reset the SMC and re-install the Intel 10.4.11 combo update. While using the MBP on a full battery, once again the fans kicked in while just surfing the web. The fans would never turn on before while surfing the web. All of a sudden the MBP just shut down on me. I really have no idea what the problem could be. Unfortunately I'm out of warranty. If anyone has any suggestions or similar issues please do post. Thanks.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I did run the Apple Hardware Test and after running both normal and extended tests no trouble was found. I managed to download the widget called iStat Pro, I realized that my CPU was idling at 50%, and the CPU temperature was 80 degrees Celsius. This caused my fans to run consistently at 6000RPM. I discovered that the random shut down while running on the battery was caused by too much current being drained by the system. So as you suggested, it was indeed happening for safety reasons.
By looking at the Activity Monitor and selecting all processes I saw that a process called printjobmgr was utilizing 100% of the CPU. I found this strange as I had performed several restarts and would have expected this process to terminate on its own. As soon as I used Force Quit, everything returned to normal. Strangely, every time I print something, the printjobmgr starts up and utilizes 100% of the CPU. This lasts until the printing is finished. I still was unable to find a permanent solution to this.

  • MacBook Pro late 2008 gets hotter than usual with 10.6.4?

    Hi all
So my computer usually gets hot even just idling, and the fans start revving up from just watching a few SD vids in quicktime, but now after this update my computer gets even hotter.
Playing standard definition videos would just get to a little over 70˚C ish but now it's about 81˚C. I have to use SMC fan control and set the RPM to max (6k RPM) in order to bring temps back down to 69-70˚C. It seems with every update the temps go up, but this one is the most dramatic. I'm using the integrated graphics chip instead of the dedicated chip. I could only imagine how hot this thing would get if I were using that beast >.<
If I can't stop the temps from going up, I'm gonna have to sell this comp, as much as I'd hate to do... Living in Phoenix AZ, a machine in your lap that gets over 178˚F isn't exactly ideal :P
Does the macbook air get as hot as the MBP? I don't have any use for the dedicated GPU anymore.
I have a late 2008 MBP if it helps any.
Hope someone comes up with a solution

You don't have to underclock your MBP to achieve acceptable temps. Just move away from Arizona's hot summer climate or get an air conditioner for your workspace. Pay attention to the maximum ambient air temperature spec for the MBP (95°F), and minimize the use of it at air temps close to that, because 95° air doesn't absorb heat as efficiently as your MBP expects it to. Get the MBP off your lap, where it shouldn't be, so air can circulate freely across the bottom of its case. Keep it out of the sun at all times. Turn off BlueTooth and Wifi when you aren't using them. Disconnect peripherals you're not using. Quit apps you're not using. Check Activity Monitor to see whether you have any hidden processes using lots of CPU cycles and raising the machine's temperature unnecessarily. Never rest the MBP on any soft surface, particularly when it's playing videos, gaming, or doing any other processor-intensive task.
I have a late-2008 MBP like yours, and its CPU temperature very rarely exceeds 145°F, because I pay attention to the common-sense practices listed above.

  • It's gonna be hotter than my metal PowerBook G4?

One thing I learned to deal with when I upgraded from my iBook G3 to my PowerBook G4 12" is that the aluminum casing did get hot..and I mean HOT! But I would say that most of the time it was just warm, even "cool" when just checking email for a short time...certainly not hot when it had just been sitting there in sleep mode connected to the AC adapter.
I was hoping returning to the plastic casing would mean not getting scorched and sweaty from a hot metal underside. If you are telling me this MacBook is WAYYYY hotter than my PowerBook, man, that sounds bad! Hopefully I will be lucky with my new MacBook.

    Note:
"hot" = temperature is high enough to cause pain or at least discomfort
"warm" = not cool and maybe sweat-inducing, but no real discomfort/pain
Hi there! I have seen one MacBook so far, the black 2.0 GHz model, and it is much cooler than the PowerBook. I had a 12" PowerBook before (1.33 GHz) which, under some circumstances, got hot. When I say hot I mean pain.
Since I have had experiences with four MacBook Pros so far, two 15" and two 17", I was very interested in the heat problems. All of the MBPs are hot. If you stress them for a while, they will burn you. They will probably not cause injuries, but it sure does not feel good. However, the MacBook, as previously mentioned a 2.0 GHz machine, did not get hot at all. It did get warm – after 15 minutes of 100% CPU load it actually got very warm – but not as hot as the MBPs and not even as hot as my old PowerBook.
In conclusion: at 100% CPU load (2x100%, actually) for quite some time, you will have a very warm computer in your lap and you might feel a bit sweaty. However, it will not get hot ("HOT!") like the PowerBooks did. The MacBook does not seem to have the "hot upper left corner" either and the area above the function keys is just rather warm, instead of painfully hot.
Hope this answers your question somewhat. Even though this is a rather subjective matter, I think that I, with confidence, can assure you that the MacBook is at least not hotter than the PowerBook. I just wish that they could do something about the MacBook Pros... I am writing this with the computer in my lap and I know that if I had some background process chewing CPU for a while, it would start to hurt.

  • CPU2 hotter than CPU1... When to worry?

    G'day,
My recently acquired June04 1.8GHz dual processor PowerMac G5 has 1 CPU constantly running at least 10°C hotter than the other CPU.
I've just opened the computer up and had a look... and there are no screws holding either of the CPUs/heatsinks in place.
(I know - not good to be running the computer like that!!!)
Would this alone be a likely cause of the overheating? (Well - and - what IS overheating - at what temperature do you start to worry)
    Thanks
    cosmic

    Hi-
75ºC is probably a good temp under load.
I don't think temps under 80ºC are much to worry about.
Variations between CPU temps are common, though usually a bit closer together.
One CPU will typically be hit with system load more than the other, so one being hotter would be normal.
Also, the upper CPU gets an extra dose from the normal physics of heat.....
However, there should be 4 screws holding the processor heat sink assembly to the board.
They are either Phillips or 2.5 mm Hex.
Check airflow, cleanliness, and check the function of fans/temp using an app like Temperature Monitor from Marcel Bresink.
iStat is another app to use.
Watch Console/Logs for any thermal runaway entries.
Might use Activity Monitor to see which CPU is getting worked.
That, or the Processor pref pane from CHUD.

  • My battery seems to be making the computer hotter than before and it actually is too hot to keep on my lap.  Does anyone know what this means?.

My computer seems to be much hotter lately when it is on my lap.  Does this ean I need a new battery or is there a problem with the computer?  Thanks.

If your machine is noticeably hotter than you're accustomed to even when running on a hard, flat surface, have a look at this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1473
You may have something running in the background that's using a lot of processor cycles and heating things up unnecessarily (and running your battery down faster and making your fan(s) louder than usual).

  • My fan on my macbook is on a lot more than usual

    Hello,
I have had my macbook for about a year now. I use it in the same place really all the time for the same purposes. However recently in the last few weeks the fan comes on a lot more and seems to get hotter quicker than usual. Is there a cause for concern or any remedies?

Hi Ed....I wonder if you have a stuck/runaway process ramping up the CPU usage and causing the fan to work overtime...
To check...open Activity Monitor...in your Utilities folder and select the CPU tab....in that window go to the top and choose 'All Processes' and look to see if something is using too much %CPU....high double or even triple digits...

  • IPhone 4 battery draining more than usual? Maybe because of 6.1.3?

Hey, I have noticed that ever since I have updated to my iPhone 4 to iOS 6.1.3 the battery has drained more than usual. My battery drains about 1% per minute. Sometimes it drains even when I'm not using the phone? Is there any solution to fix this problem? I would REALLY appreciate it!

The battery drains on every phone when not being actively used. There are processes going on in the background such as an email account or accounts being checked for new messages depending on your Fetch setting for email. Depending on the cellular reception at the time, more battery will be used when reception is lower regardless if any calls are being placed or received. If you have any push notifications enabled, those are being received. when not actively using the phone.
Have you changed anything such as screen brightness?
Are you accessing an Exchange account with your iPhone?
Any change after powering the iPhone off and on and/or after a reset which is similar to a computer restart?

Help!!!!! I need to get iphoto lib off of hd which is running really slowly, and clicks rather more loudly than usual, how do i do this, im even on my iphone asking this! Computer also runs inly marginally faster in safe boot mode! Could the apple store help?

It certainly sounds like your harddrive is dying.  I would Immediately backup your harddrive to an external USB or Firewire harddrive Before doing anything else.  It just may save your data in time before you lose it all.
    Hope this helps

When it was done, it showed the power cord w/an arrow to iTunes.  ***???  I restarted my computer and tried the whole process again and still...the power cord with an arrow to iTunes.  And I know this means I have to go to Apple and get another phone and will lose anything that wasn't backed up. Anyone else have this happen or have a solution so I don't have to do a restore???

    Reboot your computer.
    Disable your antivirus and firewall.
Connect the phone to a USB port directly on your computer, not to a hub. If your computer is not a laptop and has ports on both front and back use a port on the back.
If iTunes does not recognize the phone when you connect it see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
If it STILL doesn't work open a command window and type:
       netsh winsock reset
Then try again. (It seems that a recent Microsoft Windows update may have corrupted network settings; this restores them to the factory default).
BTW, was there an error number associated with the failed update?

  • Satellite L735 taking longer than usual to start-up

My toshiba Satellite L735 was taking longer than usual to startup (more than a minute, usually takes 40 secs) gave it to the service centre, they said they updates the BIOS, optimised processor calculation, formatted it.
It was fine again, but the problem was back in less than a month, took it again, the person at the counter just reduced the unnecessary programs from the boot list, came back home to notice it was taking even longer to startup (more than 2 mins).
When i switch it on, its all fine i get the windows logo in no time, but after that a black screen appears and stays for about a minute and a half, then the homescreen appears, the windows startup sound thats supposed to play as soon as the homescreen appears plays about 40 secs aftr the homescreen has appeared.
    Please help.
    Thank you.

    Hi
The notebook seems to load the windows slowly because too many processes would be loaded at the beginning.
First of all I recommend downloading and installing the CCLeaner. This freeware tool would help you to clean the registry and to remove the garbage from the system.
Furthermore you should check your processes which would be loaded at the beginning.
Start msconfig and go to StartUp tab. Here you can disable no necessary and not important processes.
I dont know how many computer experience you have so be careful with that.
If you dont know exactly what the single process does, google for more details.
Removing a mark near the process will disable this you can enable this later too
Furthermore I would recommend checking your antivirus software I switched from Norton Antivirus to Avira Antivir software because it much faster and does not need a lot of hardware resources the Avira antivir is freeware software so you can install and use it for free.
Last but not least defragment the HDD to ensure faster data access
    Good luck
