IBook Indigo Clamshell & OSx 10.4

Hi All
Just got this iBook G3/366 Indigo Clamshell - Firewire - It came with out an operating system. I was able to purchase from eBay a set of cd's for the iBook - Software Restore Disk, iBook Software Install v 9.1 and Mac OS X 10.0.3. The iBook run's OK now but what I want to do is to up grade to 10.4.xx.
As this iBook came with just the CD Rom I am trying to use my iMac as a 'Hard Drive' via the firewire cable - this I have done between an iMac & eMac - The version of Tiger I have is 'MACOSXv10.4.6RTL' It say's that I can run up to x10.4.11 - That came from http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/stats/ibook_366.html
Question - How can I install the 10.4.xx version of OS X on to this iBook.
The iBook only has 64mb RAM, this I will be upgrading.
Regards
Lee

I havn't tried the firewire installation from a G4 to a G3 Clamshell yet.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661?viewlocale=en_US
Start you Clamshell and press T, to start into firewire mode, hook it up to your emac and boot from the eMac DVD drive. The installation programm shows up your eMac HD and the Clamshell HD (orange icon) as the target - choose the iBook HD.
When you plan to upgrade your Clamshell, it might be a better option to place a DVD ROM drive instead of the CD-ROM. Even the 366MHZ firewire Clamshells are able to play DVD movies.
If the installation fails from the G4, try a external DVD firewire drive for the Tiger DVD.
Interesting: The iBook is able to boot from some USB DVD drives. Indeed, my 300MHZ Blueberry iBook booted via USB from a Philipps LightScribe DVD-burner which is in an external 5.25 " NoName enclosure with USB and FireWire ports which has a Polific PL-3507 chipset.

  • Clamshell iBook (indigo) can't find base station (Netgear router)

My first post on this forum. Now the proud owner of an indigo Clamshell iBook (OS 9.2.2)
I am using a Netgear router DG834G, a G3 snow iMac (OS10.3.9) as the base station, and a Dell PC is connected wirelessly to that. No problems at all.
I now want to connect an indigo Clamshell G3 iBook to the base station. (in fact, I have two of them)
The iBook is using Airport and running OS 9.2.2, and shows a strong router signal. The iBook TCP/IP has automatically updated all the values using DHCP, and the Router data page shows the iBook as "Connected", as well as its IP number (192.168.0.4) which was automatically assigned by the router. There is no encryption set up yet.
If you run OS 9 you will know this part...the iBook has a pull down window called "Base stations", to add new ones, but the Netgear router is NOT shown in it, and I can't add it. The box is empty, so I guess that's why I can't connect! All I get is an error message saying "check TCP/IP setttings or password". The default base station IP address (which I keep changing to the new one) is 10.0.1.1 (why?) My Netgear router is 192.168.0.1. The previous base station IP address still comes up, and I can't change it permanently. I don't have any password when prompted, (I tried the default one "public" ) so is that the main problem or is it something else? Is there a problem with Airport and non-Apple routers. I haven't seen this problem mentioned.
It seems as if I am 99% ready for internet conection
Thanks for your help. I've spent two days at it.

  • Where can I get a replacement battery for the iBook G3 Clamshell M6411, in the UK?

I recently managed to source an Indigo iBook G3 clamshell - the M6411 FireWire model - from eBay.
It's in superb condition, but the battery has had it, and only holds about 5-10 minutes' charge.
Can anyone suggest where I can get a replacement? I guess I just assumed it would be easy, but everywhere I look online they're either sold out or cost a fairly large amount of money - I paid £50 for the laptop, which was a pretty good deal, and had hoped to get a battery for under £30 (as I've bought similar replacement batteries before for other laptops).
Also, are all the G3 Clamshell batteries the same? Or do the different models have different batteries?

Some items come up in a search for Mac parts UK; whether or not they have
an exact part match for any vintage product has not been searched...
Most that I have looked into, show any battery "out of stock" &/or listed "used."
A good electronics shop with an understanding of how these batteries are wired
in their case (and any controller chip circuitry) should be able to install new cells
inside the case; however opening these may present a problem if done forcefully.

    http://www.applemacparts.co.uk/store/index.php
    http://www.theappleshack.co.uk/
In the US, wegenermedia.com, powerbookmedic.com, & others may know of stock.
So far, I'd struck out searching; could be one may need to contact long standing
Apple specialists & those who repair vintage models, to get refurbished batteries.
Perhaps there is a message board or User Group site where one could try & contact
Apple users; of those some may know of a source, or an individual capable of repair
since these battery units have been refurbished before with new rechargeable cells.
Sorry to not be of exact help in this matter.
    Good luck & happy computing!

I recently bought an ibook g4 with osx 10.5.8   I would like to downgrade to 10.3.9.  I spoke to 2 people at the genious bar. One said to buy osx 10.3 9 on amazon. another said that might not work as the upgrade to 10.5 could have made internal changes.
I have another ibook g4 with 10.3.9 on it. Is there any way to utilie this?
    Thanks
    Jim C

    Thanks Niel.
Bear with me, as I'm not particularly computer literate.
I found the computer listed (Powerbook 6,7, 12 inch screen) and the following note:
"Details: *This model is capable of using Mac OS 9 applications within the Mac OS X "Classic" environment provided with Mac OS X 10.4.11 "Tiger" and lower ("Classic" is not supported starting with Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard"). It cannot boot into Mac OS 9."
Does this mean if I purchase OSX 10.4.11,  I can install it and then use software that works in the "Classic" environment?
    Again thanks for your help.

  • IBook Indigo with Internet Troubles

Trying to rehab my old Indigo clamshell for my kids to use and would like to have internet access. I configured the internet for our current service provider. I was using WEP encryption for the wireless router, but it kept rejecting my attempts to connect saying the 'password was incorrect'. When I disable the security and allow free access then I can connect to the router. However, even with being connected to the router and having the internet configuration set up it's not letting me connect to the internet. Suggestions appreciated!
    Thanks!

Not sure I have a complete answer for you, but maybe some insights.
Recently I tried connecting to the internet with a Bondi Blue Rev. B iMac running OS 9.2.2. I could not, and posted a question on another forum and someone suggested that the IE5 browser was no longer supported and could no longer access the internet.
If you want to stick with OS 9, you should probably update the software to the latest version:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75186
You should be able to download the update on a working computer, copy it to a USB flash drive, then copy it to the desktop of the Indigo, and install it.
No idea what browser might work with OS 9--you would probably need to post a question on the appropriate software forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=161
If there is a browser that would work, this would be the place to find it.
What I ultimately did with the Bondi was to install Panther and update it to 10.3.9. Because of a non-working ethernet port, I purchased a Newertech USB airport card from OWC and used that to connect to the internet. That did work, although the internet access I gained was still limited because of the older technology. GMail and Yahoo mail do not work--only AOL. Some sites do not load. YouTune and Google Earth don't work at all.
Don't know how anything would work on the Indigo. I believe that the Indigo might be able to run OS X v. 10.4.11, and if so, that would be a better OS than Tiger. You may need to install a Firmware update before installing Tiger:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75128
You may even need to do this before updating OS 9, since it says you should do it from OS 9.1.
Anyway, maybe some food for thought.
    Good luck!

  • IBook G3 Clamshell Screen Replacement

    Hey all...
Let's dive into the depths of the past...all the way back to 1999 and the Tangerine iBook G3 Clamshell.
I recently acquired one of these babies, but, alas, the screen was cracked.  So, being the crack uncertified Apple technician I am, I ordered a replacement LCD off eBay, and attempted to install it today.  All went well removing the bezel and the old cracked screen, but when I installed the new LCD, it remained steadfastly black and lifeless.  I'm 99% sure that my new screen came from a Key Lime or Graphite iBook G3 (one generation newer than the Tangerine), but I was not aware of any compatibility issues between the two...
    Here's what I know:
New screen's backlight does turn on and display no image when JUST the power cable is plugged into the new LCD.  Attaching the LVDS cable (is that what it was called back then?) turns everything black.
New screen came from a LATER MODEL of iBook G3 Clamshell, but the LVDS and power connectors are the same.
LVDS cable plugs in upside-down on the new screen compared to the old (trying to force to go in the same direction as the old doesn't work either).
Did I get a bad LCD, or were the screens of the Key Lime/Graphite really incompatible with the Blueberry/Tangerine?  Anyone got a good guess?

    Eff...right here, clear as day:
    http://www.ibook-clamshell.com/en/hardware/69-das-ibook-display
I bought an IBM display when I needed a Samsung.  Return time!
    Thanks for the help, Ronda.

  • Ibook g3 clamshell w/ questions...

hey, i have a ibook g3 clamshell tangerine 300mhz. 3.2gb. hd and i have a 256 mb. ram im going to be installing. i currently have panther on the laptop and an airport on the way as well. i was wondering what the max. size of a hd was on this laptop and also the max. os i could put on the hd. i was also wondering if a proper battery does hold a charge without the charger plugged in because mine only operates with the charger plugged in.
    thanks for any help!

+> hey, i have a ibook g3 clamshell tangerine 300mhz. 3.2gb. hd and i have a 256 mb. ram im going to be installing. i currently have panther on the laptop and an airport on the way as well. i was wondering what the max. size of a hd was on this laptop and also the max. os i could put on the hd. i was also wondering if a proper battery does hold a charge without the charger plugged in because mine only operates with the charger plugged in.+
I also have an iBook G3 Clamshell Tangerine 300 MHz.
If you're looking for some upgrades, I suggest you try Other World Computing at Link: [http://eshop.macsales.com>
Click on the tab that says G3/G4 Upgrades.
Select iBook G3/G4, click show models.
Select the third model listed (Apple iBook, iBook (Firewire),iBook SE (FireWire) - 300 MHz, 366 MHz or 466 MHz).
Select either Data Storage Upgrades or Memory Upgrades (those are the only two that will comeback with an upgrade option).
    Then click 'Show Upgrades'.
Data Storage Upgrades will show you 5 or 6 HDs for sale from them.
Memory Upgrades will show 4 different RAM chips from them.
You might want to consider upgrading your RAM with a 512MB chip instead of that 256 MB chip, if you're going to order a new hard drive. (I just put a new 512 MB chip in my iBook today, and it only cost $27.99, the OWC brand).
Also do a search on that site for 'iBook Batteries' and if you scroll through the results you'll find they have two different batteries for the 'clamshell' iBooks. A Google search for 'iBook clamshell batteries' will provide you other possible suppliers.
OS 10.3.9 is considered the final OS you can install on this unit. Some people claim you can install Tiger, 10.4.x on it, if you can either do the install on the HD with the use of an external firewire enclosure and a firewire equipped different computer, then transfer that HD into the iBook, or get a CD version of Tiger, since it basically only came on DVD.
Link: [http://www.allmac.com> claims to have Tiger on CDs for $179.99. Do an eBay search for 'Mac OS Tiger' and you'll find Allmac has it in auction for a lower price. It says it is for the DVD, but they'll change it to CDs after you complete the purchase and notify them when you authorize the PayPal payment. +But beware, it will be very slow on a 300 MHz G3.+
I just bought 10.3.x from Allmac through an eBay buy it now auction for $39.99, and they changed it to CDs for me, no problem. They also included a CD with 12 or 15 updates for items like Security, JAVA and updates to 10.3.9. I was updating a old, fruity iMac for a family member.
I've been considering upgrading my iBook to 10.3.9, but my internal CD drive sometimes doesn't work, and the last thing I'd need would be for me to start upgrading and not being able to finish it - +then iBook would be TOAST!+
My original 6 GB HD is still working (knock on wood), but I'm on my second or third battery, and my third power supply.
The website Link:[http://www.ifixit.com/Guide> has excellent guides to replacing the RAM or the HD on your own. The RAM is very easy, the HD a little more complicated. Where it says choose your family, click on 'Mac', then on the next page find the link for 'iBook', next find the link for 'clamshell'. Finally, select which guide you need.
    Good luck!

  • Ibook indigo cd drive issue

Hello everyone. I recently acquired an iBook clamshell 366 indigo. Everything on the laptop works great besides the fact that the cd bezel is gone, aka the cover on the cd drive. It is still functional, however i would still like to get a replacement cover for the drive so everything will look flush and I won't have to worry about anything happening to it when i'm taking it somewhere. I've looked around and searched for the covers on various sites and on ebay, but I can't seem to find one for sale for less than 50 dollars. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I could find one of these for a reasonable price? Thanks.
    -Aaron

I've replaced the CD drive of my indigo iBook with a DVD burner NEC ND6500A.
The 366MHz firewire iBook is able to play DVD movies, so that was an attractive extra on the road.
The bezel is easy to replace, there are three plastic tabs (one with a hole for a screw) which hold the bezel in place. There is a bezel mod with good photos, you can see the bezel construction
    http://members.shaw.ca/troytunes/Ibook366_BezelMod/
Sometimes you get an iBook with parts of the bezel in place including the button, the rest missing. I always use hot glue to fix plastic parts, it is a little bit elastic and easy to remove.

  • Airport card 1.2.1 does not work with Ibook G3 with OSx.4.2

I just purchased a brand new airport express base station. It seems to be up and running on my G4Imac just fine as a server.
    For the client,
I have an ibook G3 and now have OSX.3.4 on it.
I installed my ancient Airport card- 1.2.1 into the Ibook.
I installed the new software from the new Airport base station.
I tried to install the old software from the Airport 1.2.1 card but dont have Classic- so would not install.
Now, the Ibook does not allow me to choose Airport in the Network Preferences section- does not seem to recognize there is a card installed. So, no way to connect to the base station.
    My questions:
1.can OS X..3.4 recognize the old Airport 1.2.1?
    2. Does the software from the new base station support the old card when used in the client?
    3. Do I need different software for the card in the iBook other then the base station software? ie, is there card software that needs to be installed, and if so what is it in system X?
Im trying to figure out if I have a hardward problem- ie the card or slot is not working- or s software problem.
    Can anyone help?

MacOS 10.3.x has all the software to use an Airport card already installed. All I would recommend you do is install the Airport 4.1 update provided at:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport41formacosx.html
The software that ships on the CD that came with the Airport Express is only used to configure an Airport Express. It doesn't provide any software updates for the MacOS itself, nor for the Airport card installed in that Mac.
First thing I suggest you do - run the System Profiler utility on your Mac. See if it identifies that an Airport card is installed. If it does not then recheck the installation of the card - ie pull out the card, then plug it in again and make sure it is fully seated into its socket. Remember to also attach the antenna cable to the card. If the System Profiler still fails to "see" the installed Airport card, then the card itself is likely defective.
[Side note: Airport 1.2.1 was the version of the Airport software required to provide software support for the card in ancient MacOS versions. Airport 1.2.1 is not actually installed on the Airport card itself, so if you install an original Airport card into another Mac it makes no difference what Airport version was installed on the Mac the card was pulled from.]

  • Moving backup files from iBook to Powerbook-OSX 10.4.11

In a previous discussion I asked about my crashed iBook and got good info: not good news, though, for the iBook since I had to replace it with a used 12' OSX 10.4.11 Powerbook--a very nice little machine that runs just like the iBook but faster.  A few years ago, I got a Seagate external drive and have regularly backed up the whole hard drive, though not in the past 6 months, so I do have useable files to do a backup.  (Since the iBook is now history, I don't know what I used to do the backup--maybe the Disk Utility, maybe CCC.)
I've opened the Seagate drive on the Powerbook, looked in all the folders and found my photos, iTunes, documents, desktop folders: looks like everything is there.  Now what can I do with it?  I was thinking of drag and drop for the desktop folders but not sure about the iLife app's.  My iBook had iLife 4 loaded but the Powerbook is running iLife 6, so the iPhoto and iTunes look a little different.  Actually, I think I have been updating the iTunes app as the updates came thru, maybe up to iTunes 9...
So I am not sure what to do now, in order to move all my data from the iBook backup to the 'new' Powerbook.  The OSX 10.4.11 matches on both laptops except for the updated iLife app's, and I do not want to lose these updated app's.  Is it possible to replace maybe some app's, like Safari, and just drag and drop some folders, like all the Desktop folders.  I don't want to just ram the data over, and then find I've lost the use of the Powerbook altogether.  Should I partition the Powerbook drive and move the old stuff over, then try to run it?  Or.....?  The user manuals are not too useful for these issues, but this community is the place to bring one's questions.

    hey dalstgott:
Well, an update: the desktop folders moved very easily while my photos took a bit more work.  I was able to move most of them by opening iPhoto and clicking File>Import to Library... and then selecting each album from the outboard drive.  I did have to move a few manually as the auto move failed.  Looking at the data behind each photo showed that time and dat stamp plus exposure info did move.  There were at least two folders associated with each album that I couldn't move, nor could I open them...guess I didn't need them.
Now I'll try with iTunes, although along with the iTunes Music files themselves (mp3's I think) but there are eleven other files like: Album Artwork,  iTunes Library, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, @2011-05-20t22;02;46.itdb, Mobile Applications; Previous iTunes Libraries.  I tried to copy the list but couldn't do a screenshot of the list.  I'm afraid that there is some data in the other files that may be needed to play the mp3's but I'll give the move a try and see what happens.    Will update soon.....

  • Best Browser and OS for G3 Indigo Clamshell w/128 Megs Ram

    Hey Everyone,
I am buying an Indigo G3 w/128 megs of ram that's running OS 9.2 and already has some version of MS Office on there. It's never been used on the net at all! All I want to do is e-mail, web surf, and maybe run iTunes. I am also scavenging an airport card from my dead G3 white laptop( Pismo?) and putting that in later, as my girlfriend has a wireless router. Basically, its just a cheap solution as I am working with her at her business and need something inexpensive to work on...that is MAC!
    So, my questions are:
    1) If I just plug it into an ethernet cable, will it update the firmware?
    2) Can I still efficiently use 9.2 with my above described needs( minus iTunes...I know that needs OSX)?
    3) What browser could I use and how do I get it if this thing has never been on the net before?
    Thanks everyone!

Probably the best browser for OS 9.x is Mozilla. Although Mozilla will have a problem on some web sites that are designed for newer browsers. Download Wamcom's Mozilla browser at: http://wamcom.org/latest-131/ With only 128MB RAM, you need to have a lot of Virtual Memory.
You only need to update the firmware if you are going to install/run OS X.
Although I have Panther installed on my G4, I run in OS 9.2.2 more than Panther.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Can I download an older version of iBooks Author for OSX 10.7 (Lion)?

I had to recently format my mac (2009 Mac Pro) but because of the hardware I can't upgrade to the latest OSX and am stuck with 10.7. Is there a way / link to download a version of iBooks Author that will be compatible with 10.7?

Well, when I pay several hundred dollars for something, I expect to be able to use it for more than a couple years.
Your iPod stopped working, did it?
and no, my 2nd gen iPod does NOT do anything even close to what it did when I bought it.
I don't believe that for an instant. List one thing that your iPod was advertised or otherwise promised by Apple to do when you bought it that it doesn't do now. And I don't mean apps that you failed to download when they were issued in a version that would run on iOS 4.2.1 and that now require a newer version of iOS.
In any case, if you're that unhappy, go buy an Android device, then. But I suggest you price them out first. You may find that they're really not cheaper, particularly if you want to keep up with anything like current Android releases. I doubt anyone here really cares if you find some other product you think suits you better.

  • Wipe my iBook clean without OSX Disks

I want to sell my iBook G4 but I cannot find the osx install DVDs that came with it. It is not a problem for the person that i am selling it to if i dont have the disks. Is there an easy way to wipe this computer clean?

You can use Dusc Utility to wipe the whole HD clean but you need an install disc to put a system back on the computer again.
You could just go through the user folder and user library folders and remove anything you don't want the computer to have like your email information, mails and applications etc.
To be able to clean the computer and pass it over to someone as a clean ready to start with from new OS then you will need install discs.
Hopefully this is helpful or solved your problem. Consider rewarding some points!
