IBook is dying? Or not. Help me!

For the past month or two my iBook G4 (about a year and a half old) has been randomly freezing on me. I was confused and panicked and called all my friends who knew about macs and did everything possible to fix it. I had been keeping it on most of every day in various stages of sleep for the past school year, and it hadn't gotten much use over the summer. When I got back in the fall it worked normally for a few weeks and then started just freezing. It would freeze whenever I tried to use it in class, or a second after I logged in, or after 30 mins to an hour of use. For a couple weeks I couldn't really use it for more than 15 minutes without it shutting down on me, probably twice in that period of time.
Here's what's confusing me: I ran a maintenance and a virus scan, I made sure that it was getting power because I always keep it plugged in as long as I'm not in class, and I made sure that it was off any time I wasn't using it. The problem seems to be getting better; It will still freeze maybe every other day but I can use it for at least a couple of hours before it does for the most part. Yet it still freezes when I take it to class or move it around.
The only thing I have not done (besides taking it to a tech) is erasing everything and starting from scratch.
My questions are the following:
Should I wipe it and start over, or is it likely to be a completely different problem? If I should, I know I need to back up the files, but my computer doesn't seem to want to install the Backup Program (keeps telling me it won't open in various files or that it can't be read or something), so can someone help me with that?
I know it was suggested that someone else whose computer was freezing check to see if they have Applecare- I have no clue whether not I have it and would love it someone could tell me how to find out.
And finally... should I need to take this to an Apple store or something, should I take it back to the COMPUSA we bought it at? or go to an actual Apple store (if this is the case, does anyone know a location relatively close to Athens, GA?)
Thank you so much for helping me!!!

hey there,
sorry to read that, one simple thing you could try that often bugs people on ibooks is taking any additional ram you have out, and put i back in place, that could explain why it freezes. If you don't feel confident enough to do it, take it to any apple store, they'll do it in a minute and shouldn't charge you. The best way to find out about your applecare is to call apple, they'll be able to tell you.
One last idea i have, your computer hates class, and would rather stay at home and sleep all day, just like any of us!
Hope you'll solve this problem, regards
C

Are the PDFs and ibooks on your computer's iTunes ? If so then you should be able to re-sync them, if not then you can re-download ibooks for free as long as they are still available in the store and you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to buy them : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519 . The backup doesn't contain the contents of the ibooks app, so for them to be restored to the device they needed to be in your iTunes library.

  • Ibook g4s / dying out?

is it just me or does there seem to be a noticeably greater number of 'ibook, blue or black screen, hard drive dying, cold restart, etc ...' posts lately? i wonder because my 5 year old machine just gave up the ghost on the weekend. (yes, it was due to that mentioned above.) (i type this from a nice and new and shiny macbook.) are we witnessing a 'critical mass' of faulty parts? i must note however, i replaced my machine gladly because, a. the repairs were too costly, (@$400) and b. i felt that since the g4 has given me nothing but stellar service over the past half decade, i couldn't complain. raymond.

    raymond:
Congratulations on your new MacBook! Five happy years with an iBook G4 is great!
iBooks, both G3 and G4 have been plagued with hardware issues, notably a variety of logic board issues. Yes, you see quite a few of them in these forums. Unfortunately the millions of iBook users who have not had issues and are happily computing on their iBooks don't post here, so we hear only of the problems experienced with iBooks, but not of those who are perfectly happy with them.
One of my sons-in-law has an iBook G4 14" 1.33 GHz, and he ran into serious issues with his iBook. After swapping out the HDD a couple of times he passed it to me to see if I could help. I soon found that the ATA Controller failed. The computer works perfectly fine for him booting from an external firewire HDD. On the other hand one of my other daughters also has iBook G4 of the same vintage. Apart from some occasional OS maintenance I do for her, she is perfectly happy with her iBook G4 1.33 GHz. I have a long thread about my son's-in-law iBook in this forum, but not a word about my daughter's. That by way of illustration.
Donating your iBook to be repaired and recycled will extend the happy years you had with it to someone else. What a deal!

  • How can i open my iBook on my Mac, not just on my iPhone

    Hi,
how can i open my iBook on my Mac, not just on my iPhone?  I ask this questions in hopes that I can eventually find a way to have the iPhone read a non "Enhanced" iBook to me.
I used the Accessibility reader for a brief time but it's very persinickety.  Move the phone a tiny bit and it threw me out from page 70 and back to page 48.  Changing pages when you are in Accessibility is excruciating. Now, I cannot get back there at all.
I downloaded 2 apps that claim they can read to me but the closest I can get in the instructions says I need to open the iBook from my Mac computer with my iPhone connected and then I will be able to open the iBook in the app called "Read text to me".  Only when I go to open the book on my Mac it says "This book can’t be viewed using this computer. You can view this book using iBooks on your iOS device."
Thank god, I only have a brain tumor and am not yet completely blind.
I've been to the Apple store twice, checked out a youtube page with all it's comments and I am still nowhere, over the course of a week.
    Can anybody help me?
    thank you,
    Ellen

    You cannot.
Ibooks are only for iphone/ipod touch/ipad
So, there are no third party readers/emulators in Mac OS X and Windows to read them from iTunes? I don't even own an iOS device. I just redeemed Action Comics' Superman #1 from Starbucks and iTunes.
    This one?
Where the REQUIREMENTS spell out that an iOS device is needed to read it?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Ibooks on mac does not sync with ibooks ios

i have about 50 books, not all bought, showing in my ibooks on mac. However on my iphone i have only about six. I have followed the instrucitons to check Show All Purchases but as the items were not all purchased via ibooks i am wondering if iOS ibooks only shows items purchased via the store..
    Thanks for any ideas

I found a solution that worked for me.
I had books that were not purchased from iTunes and some that were  in my iPhone iBooks and they were not in iBooks on my macbookair.
I went into itunes -  then File / Devices  - select Transfer purchases from iPhone.
voila after restarting iBooks  they appeared on my Macbookair.
    hope that helps others.

  • IBook G3 Dual USB Not Finding Server With Wireless Internet

I have an iBook G3 Dual USB that has been working fine, then all of a sudden we could no longer get web sites to come up. It keeps saying server not found. I am using a Linksy wireless router and have cable internet.
I also have a desktop Mac that can still get on the net ok. It is plugged into the router by hardline. I unplugged the ethernet cable from the desktop Mac and plugged it into the iBook and still can not get online.
Anyone have any suggestions why I can no longer get on the net? We have not changed any settings. One minute it was fine, the next nothing.
When I go into AirPort, it is showing a strong signal.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

When I replied to your latest post you had indicated that you were still having problems getting on the Internet through a hard line. I see that that has changed.
Given the new data I think you are on the right path. If you zapped your PRAM and everthing is fine then disregard the rest of this message.
If things still don't work right...
New suggestion. Check the router and be sure the antennaes are secured to the back of the router and visually check them for signs of damage. If all looks good then cycle the router (if you have not done so already) and see if that helps. Its a long shot, but its worth a try.
If you are still having problems then taking the iBook to work and seeing if you can gain access to the Internet through your wireless network is a good idea (as long as the network is open). If you can get on-line then the router at home is suspect. If not then the card is suspect.
One last suggestion for the Mac. If you can, use another Airport card in your iBook. If you can get on-line with a different card then you know there is a problem with the other card and not the router. If you are still have problems getting on-line with a differemt card then getting another router may solve the issue.

Let's see if a more rigorous uninstall/reinstall procedure gets us past that, nancy. See the following troubleshooting document:

  • What happens to the display if the iBook is closed when Not asleep??

I have read that closing the iBook when it will not sleep is BAD and can ruin the display. Does anyone know what exactly happens to the display in this case??

Yes it was under warranty. My husband took it into the Apple store and they told him that the type of damage that our screen had was obviously because of an accident and that voided any warranties on the computer all together so it would not be covered.
I know that there was no accident since the computer was sitting in a home office between the time I used it last until the time my husband went to use it 17 hours later. No one else was home. He noticed that the computer was not sleeping when it was closed also.
That is why I am interested in the type of damage that occurs to the screen. I have seen several times in these discussions warning not to close a screen if the computer will not sleep. These warnings usually link to a warning from Apple that doing so will cause damage to the screen.
I'm just sick at having to purchase a new iBook when the old one was only 4 mos old.

I can not open itunes on my computer. It started when an upgrade appeared. Now I get a message that states This application has failed to start because MSVCR80.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. I tried to reinsall the application but it did not help. I also get a message iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes   Error 7 (Windows error 126)   Please Help me!

Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

  • On my MacBook with Lion Safari does start, does not react immediately after trying to open it. Installing a new Safari does not help. Removing parts of Safari in the Library did not help. Where can I find and remove all components (LastSession ...)?

How can I reset Safari with all components? On my MacBook with Lion, Safari does not start, does not react immediately after trying to open it. Installing a new Safari does not help. Removing parts of Safari in the Library does not help. Where can I find and remove all components as LastSession and TopSites?

The only way to reinstall Safari on a Mac running v10.7 Lion is to restore OS X using OS X Recovery
Instead of restoring OS X in order to reinstall Safari, try troubleshooting extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
If it's not an extension or plug-in issue, delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
