Ibook is very dead

My ibook G4 doesn't do anything anymore. I've always been very kind to it, but it's suddenly dead. The battery still seems to be loaded (4 lights) and there is no visible problem with the power supply (green light), but when I press the on button nothing happens. Is there a way of formatting everything?

I have a brand new iBook (15” / 1.42 GHz version). The unit will only boot with the AC adapter plugged in. The battery appears to be charged with 4 green battery lights. I followed the PMU suggestions with no success. The screen is black, unit silent and totally unresponsive. With the power supply plugged in it works great but unplug it and the computer goes dead. I would like to be able to use the new unit without being tethered to AC power. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for a new unit to actually work but maybe I’m dreaming. Any suggestions?

  • =( My iBook is still dead!!! (with included symptoms of a dying iBook)

I bought my iBook last May2004. I loved my iBook and took really good care of it. After one year of usage, all of a sudden my iBook stopped working -- a month after my warranty had expired... It all started with the "sleeping problem" -- when it didn't want to go to sleep even after my lid was already down... there were even times when it got really hot in my bag because it didn't sleep... then sooner the problem got worst... it wouldn't boot normaly -- it would boot 1 out of 4 times of trying to boot-it-up... I also got the weird screen with different funky colors... then one day, all I hear is my iBooks fan when I press the power button... I brought it to the Mac Shop in the Philippines and they are charging me about P30,000 ($555-US) because they said it "might" be the logic board. I decided not to get it fixed here because I couldn't afford such amount... when I went to pick it up and got their invoice, their invoice mentioned "probable logic board failure"... the word "probable" kinda smells fishy... did they really check what was the problem?... ANYWAYS,... 5 after I took it back from the shop I decided to remove the battery and let it sit there for awhile...3 months after, I used my power cord to power up my laptop and used my boot cd to boot up my iBook...supprisingly, it worked... then I decided to shut my laptop off and get my battery charging... after my battery was fully charged, i turned my laptop on again and it was still working... , i unplugged my power cord and left my laptop running on battery and it still worked...BUT,... when I got tired of enjoying my again working iBook, I put my laptop in a sleep mode by closing its lid... then its LCD lights didn't automaticaly turn-off like usual even if the lid was already down... so I opened it again and pressed my space button to try to get it running but now it just went to a blank screen... again, all I hear is a fan when I turn it on and that was the last of it working... what's up with my beloved iBook?... I personaly know 7 other people (friends)experiencing the problem -- not including those I've meet in the internet -- you don't wanna know how many they are. PLEASE HELP! MY iBOOK is still DEAD!!!!!!
Note: Phrases that are underlined and are in bold letters are the usual symptoms of a dying iBook G4. Believe me. I've search all over this discussion board since 2005 and all I see are people expressing their deep sorrow and grief about their dead iBook G4. I miss me iBook so much and all that is in it. It is still sitting in my bag waiting to be resurrected. A few days ago I planned to get a MacBook because I really missed my iBook, but upon stumbling upon this Discussion Board again, I still feel much dissatisfaction from both old and new users of iBooks and MacBooks -- from the same logic board issues. I dare you find it out yourself by surfing around this Discussion Board.
To those who are in my shoes: "I feel your agony"
To those who's iBook still works: "You're one of the lucky few...but just wait...huh."
To those who are planning to buy one: "True. iBooks and MacBooks are really cool with very cool design and very good OS. But my friend, think it over plenty of times. Im not telling you to not buy one but its really painful to wake-up one day and your beloved iBook/MacBook is DEAD and its now just as useful as a paperweight or probably a doorjam or maybe even a cutting board. Believe me, I know."
Unless APPLE would decide to backup their systems with a 3year warranty(WHY NOT?), I wouldn't....
Mr. Steve Jobs, Sir, with full respect, that's my dare to you.

on some G4 iBooks similar problems could be caused by display cables - they wear out and can cause electric short

in any case it supposed to be diagnosed properly.

  • HT4059 Why does iBooks offer very few books in Nigeria?

    Hello all,
I recently got iPad (Third Generation) because I was excited about the possibilities of reading so many books through the iBooks app. However, I have recently discovered that there are very few books on offer in the Nigeria Store - and they are mostly books available in the public domain.
For a couple of days, I thought it was a general iBooks problem (i.e. iBooks did not have so many books as I had originally thought) - but then I visited the US Store through a friend's account (who also lives in Nigeria) - and realized that a greaaat deal of books are available in the US Store (and other stores).
Why does iBooks offer very few books in Nigeria? Is there any way to work around this restriction? How can this complaint be forwarded to those who make decisions at iTunes?
    Thanks,
    Koye.

    Congratulatons on the new iPad!
Music, movies, books, apps, etc. are availble on a country by country basis, as made available by the publisher. If you have books you would like to see added to the iTunes Store/iBookstore, you should submit feedback to Apple here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunes.html

  • Ibook 12' inch dead

In the end of August my ibook went dead. When i turned it off, the screen is black and i can hear only my hard drive and the dvd drive which has a cd-rom inside which i can not eject. I have tried to eject the cd whith every option Apple's website suggests and also i have tried whith and without the battery on to start the ibook. What can i do now? The ibook hasn't closed a year from the date i bought it. Should i take it back to fix it or buy a new one?

. Should i take it back to fix it or buy a new one?
Have it fixed if it is still under warranty, but then I would seriously consider selling it afterwards. If you scan this help forum you will find a very high number of people who have to return their ibook to Apple many times for reapir after the first time. It seems very strange that once you have had a logic board replaced that you would ever need to have it replaced again, but this is quite common. The same applies to hard drives, keyboards etc.

  • Ibook hard drive dead

My friend has an ibook that she spilled some sqrite on several months ago (yes i know this is very bad) but it has worked fine since then and we have kept our fingers crossed. This week though the computer will not start and the genius at the apple store said the drive is dead, which is understandable. The warrenty runs out in january (she doesn't have apple care as of now) but that doesn't really matter because apple would not cover this anyway. My question is how can she fix it? She doesn't have much money so an expensive repair may be out of the question. I have thought about trying to put in a new hard drive myself seeing as how her warrenty is almost up anyway but i don't really know how hard that is, i've never reaplaced a laptop hard drive before. Ideas?

At the time of the spill all of the above cautions were taken. After a day or 2 it was turned back on and had been functioning like normal until this weekend. At this point it will start to turn on but when it hits the blue screen before the login screen it will sit there forever. I tried to run disk repair, but that gave an error. When i took it to the apple store today the guy plugged in a firewire drive and booted off of it then ran disk utility. When disk utility opened the ibook's hard drive showed up red, and the guy said that meant it was dead. He could tell something had been spilled on it and i told him it was a surgary liquid and he said that with sugar it doesn't necessarily destroy the circuit right away, but that over time the circuit could eat away at it and then could get messed up. So because the computer could boot off of the external drive at the store i infer that the motherboard etc is fine (at least for now anyway)

  • IBooks Author VERY slow on new, late 2013 iMac

I have an iBook that is about 100mb that I am writing. The book is tediously slow to work on. Moving widgets around takes on inordinate amount of time and sometimes blows up the formatting of the book. On my old Mac Pro Late 2008, I never experienced this.
    I am running Mavericks 10.9.1 on a late 2013 iMac 3.5GHz Core i7, 16gb RAM, 500GB SSD.
Has anyone else have this problem or know a solution?
    Thanks

    I'm in the same problem.
    iBooks is became unusable.
I have published numerous ibooks, but an old update of iBooks (already with Mountain Lion, don'tv remember when), is became very very slow, with the same Mac.
Now I have update to Mavericks (now 10.9.1) hoping to solve the problem, in vain.
I have a MacBook pro 17" later 2011, 2,5 Ghz, Intel core i7, 16gb ram and i work only with iBooks Author and OpenOffice.
    Who can help me?

  • IBook Rises From Dead After 3 Months!  Baffled Family Member Needs Answers

    Hi
This is a rather long-winded post, so apologies/thanks to those of you patient enough to read to the end and to anyone who can shed some light on something that is baffling me regarding my iBook G3 700MHz (mid-2002 - I think).
This iBook has been an absolute trojan, working virtually 24/7 since I got it.
Anyway, one day about 3 months ago it just wouldn't power up. Nothing. No sound, no movement or any other sign of life.
I called my local Apple dealer and they told me about the PMU reset (mentioned elsewhere in these posts), which I did, and lo and behold the old beast fired up again. There was much rejoicing. All I had to do was reset the date and everything was sweet.
A day or so later I turned it off to take it to work with me, as usual. When I got to work and tried to start up nothing happened. Dead.
I tried the PMU reset again, to no avail. Nothing would get it going again.
I took it in to the dealer for them to have a look at. When I phoned back in the evening they said the logic board was dead and would need to be replaced at a cost of AU$1,000 (about US$800)! When I asked whether there wasn't an internal battery that could be replaced, I was told the iBooks don't have them - a fact which seems to have been confirmed in other posts in this forum.
I decided to buy a new iBook.
I've been waiting now for over 2 months for my new BTO iBook, but the dealer has lent me another iBook to tide me over until it arrives. The ridiculous wait for my new iBook is something I can cover in another rant, so I'll cut to the chase now...
Today, I was tidying up and decided that i should put my dead iBook away in its box and maybe one day I'd buy a second-hand logic board on eBay or something, fix it up and use it as an iTunes player or something...
Anyway, just before I put the dead iBook into its coffin, I thought I'd just give the power button one last push, for old times' sake.
    The beast started up!
Again, there was much rejoicing. Again, all I had to do was reset the date/time.
So, as I type this on my loan iBook, I'm listening to iTunes via my SoundSticks on the old machine.
    My question is this...
What has really happened to my iBook?
If the logic board is dead, why did the machine start up again after 3 months lying dormant?
If there is no internal battery, why have I had to reset the date/time both times it restarted? Wouldn't it be logical to think that some kind of battery was storing these settings?
Doesn't it seem reasonable to think that there is some sort of battery inside the machine which has slowly built up enough charge over the last 90 days to allow the computer to boot again?
Is it that there is in fact an internal battery built in to the logic board, and when the dealer told me it was "fried", all they really meant was that the battery was dead, but because it was on the logic board that the whole thing had to be replaced?
Obviously, I'm not going to turn the old iBook off again. I'll just put it to sleep when I'm not listening to music through it, but I'm just wondering whether any of you really smart people can tell me what's going on.
I really feel that this is miraculous and need some kind of clear answers to these questions.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
    Matt
    iBook G3 dual USB 700MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Hi, Matthew. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It is not uncommon for an iBook with a bad logic board to work intermittently.
There is no internal battery in an iBook. A capacitor holds the date/time information long enough for you to switch batteries, or for a short time without battery or AC power. The only battery is the main battery. If it has been left without use for some months, the capacitor has simply lost the date and time due to disuse and lack of power during that time.
When you do a PMU reset, this makes the time and date default, also.
Your iBook has been acting as one would expect, given the circumstances.
    Mystery solved.

  • 2 ibook g4s with dead backlights in 3 weeks

I have two non-warrantee covered ibook G4s which lost their backlights within just a few weeks. Video out to another monitor works fine on both. The apple certified repair shop found a burn mark on the motherboard, and the repair bill for each would be close to $400. I talked to a very nice supervisor at Apple, who denied that there was evidence of manufacturing defect and refused to offer extended coverage. Are others having similar problems? Any suggestions? Thank you.

    Hi Jeff,
I am sorry for your troubles with your iBooks. That seems to be very unlikely that you have had such bad problems with your computer. Some things to think about for the future:
#1 I don't know if you did this, but buy AppleCare. It is worth it in the long run even if you don't have a problem. It is better safe then sorry.
#2 Becareful about how you handle your iBook/computer. I am sure you didn't do any damage to your computer, but just think about what could potentially happen. I don't have food or drinks ever near my computer, just incase. Buy as surge protector. It is only a couple of bucks at any electronics store and it is worth it.
#3 Clean your computer. If you notice a build up of "guck" around your computer get one of the little computer vacumes or CO2 canistor and clear it out. You want to make sure that everything is running right.
#4 Make sure that the computer's fan is not blocked by anything. The G4 runs hot so you don't want to block the fan from cooling it off. I use the iCurve in my dorm room because it lets cool air around the computer.
#5 Use your sences. Listen for any unusal sounds, like the fan comming on frequently. Notice if anything unusal is going on with your computer. Sometimes when the computer is beging to malfunction you can start to see changes in the way it opperates. If your computer feels extremely hot and is making noises, shut it off let it sit.
#6 When in doubt bring it to the nearest Apple Store, call Apple Support, or ask questions in the support forums. You can research by looking through past threads to see if your problem/question has been answered before. Things like over heating shouldn't happen to the computer, it was designed not too. But it happens.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon
PS It never hurts to write a letter to Apple. I had a problem with Honda and they didn't do anything until I wrote them a letter to the headquarters. We came to an agreement, both of us gave a little.

  • Sound on iBook G4 is dead

A few months ago I was on my iBook G4 and suddenly my sound died, also my microphone stopped working as well. I think it happened right after I upgraded iTunes.
    system.log reports
    May 17 19:00:07 ibook kernel[0]: Sound assertion "0 != err" failed in "AppleLegacyAudio/AppleTexas2Audio/AppleTexas2Audio.cpp" at line 960 goto
    Exit
    Any ideas?
I searched all over the net and I found people with similar problems but no solution.
I tried resetting pram, nram, and a few other types of resets..

Ok I did what you said, however searching for AppleDallasDriver.ktext didn't yield anything, but I know it's located in the extensions folder, so I deleted it and made a copy of it. Now when I restart I get an error message stating:
    "System extension cannot be used.
The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/AppleFWAudio.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update."
I deleted that extension as well (AppleFWAudi.kext) and restarted, and still no sound and access.log still says the same original error "ibook kernel[0]: Sound assertion "0 != err" failed in "AppleLegacyAudio/AppleTexas2Audio/AppleTexas2Audio.cpp" at line 960 goto
    Exit"
Also I just noticed my sound preferences has another device called "Aggregate Device"
I don't know what that means

    2. Every six seconds a motor runs for one second

    6. I've tried to get to the BIOS (Esc, F1, F2, Del, F12) - nothing.
    7. A bootable CD in the drive does nothing.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks, Tom

    Hello Tom
According to your first posting there is serious hardware problem and I agree with Andrej. I really do not believe there is anything you can do. We can just speculate what can be defective but just check by Authorized service partner can give you all answers.
Reading this forum I have founded several threads with the same problem description. Similar problems are result if something goes wrong with BIOS update, defective mainboard or the CPU is after few seconds very hot and notebook switches off.
Either try to get some help by technicians or sold this oldie and buy newer machine.

  • Ibook G3 randomly dead?

I have an ibook that we thought had died... well the screen at least and today i tried to turn it on again. after a couple of goes of holding down the power button it actually started up!
Usually it does the chime, CD drive kshssh drrshh etc but just a black screen.
So, yes it had the flashing '? and folder' but it then loaded up, although the desktop picture was gone and all the files on it. Actually all the files were gone, and when i tried to open iPhoto it froze with the rainbow wheel ... then the screen started getting all fuzzy lines on each side of it and spacking out.
As it was frozen I turned it off at the power button. When i try to turn it back on it is back to the chime and CD drive noise, and black screen.
I remotely connected to the computer thru 'Shared' and could access the Desktop folders, but most of the files are missing from inside them although I can see the xxx.sparseimage file which looks like the home drive with the little house thingy, (these were not visible when i managed to get the screen turned on as mentioned above).
I'm trying to back this .sparseimage thing up.... is it worth it? What is wrong with it, have I lost the files and are they retrievable some other way??
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks.

    HI,
*"it had the flashing '? and folder'"*
Can mean several things. One, your iBook can't find a System Folder to boot from. Two, it can mean the drive is failing, or failed.
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac

  • Ibook becoming very slow?

    Hi all.
My Ibook G4 has become veeery slow lately. I have like 3 gigs empty space on my hard drive. I tried to delete some pics and movies and thought that would help but nothing changed.
I have also deleted some applictations and thought that would help but neither did that help.
So,,,what can i do to make it work like before again?
Its like hacking and getting stucked when i open multiple pages and run different programs.
PLz hellp me with this if u can!
    Thanx alot.

when i am on the internet and downloading things, i see links that say things like 'download this downloads manager, it will make your downloads faster,' and stuff like that. Is there any truth to those sorts of things or are they just scams to get you to their sites?
There's also all of those other little tricks like tampering with .pref files, emptying the cache. Do these things work or are they myths as well?
Then there is the big one. What's the faster internet browser? Everyone seems to have different answers. Is there one answer or does it depend on the system your running? Please tell.
I've been ripping my hair out for ages on this 'fast internet and download' topic for ages. Please help.

  • Very Dead G5 - Urgent Help Required!

    Hi people!
I hope someone might be able to help me with a small problem.
I returned to the dungeon today, to discover a rather sick G5. The fan was screaming and the machine wouldn't wake up from sleep mode. I rebooted it using the button and I was greeted with some worrying chimes! When the screen came on it informed me that it couldn't find the start up drive.
I rebooted to the install disk, and disk utility recognised the HD but won't let me touch it. I've since rebooted with Drive Genius and no joy there. It wouldn't even recognise the HD. I've firewired to the Powerbook and no joy there either.
My final attempt has been to firewire to an old G4 with Norton installed. This has worked in the past when I've had problems with bad blocks and Norton has saved the day but this time it won't recognise the disk either.
I need to get the work from the drive that was done on Friday by my colleagues (no they didn't back it up - it was Friday and I wasn't around to 'remind' them).
If anyone has any suggestions of how to boot to HD so i can save the work, then I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks, in advance.
    Matt

    Cheers dude!
I did try both DW and Drive Genius, to no avail. A few months ago I had a similar problem with the Powerbook. A bad block on start up was giving me loads of grief.
Disk utility, DW and Drive Genius couldn't sort it. As a last ditch attempt I firewired the G4 Powerbook to an old G4 and ran Norton on it. I ran it about 6 times. Each time it got a little bit further until it rectified the problem and everything has been hunky dory since. The Powerbook is running 10.4.8, so it wouldn't boot from Norton but the older G4 is onn;y running something like 10.3.9 and it was happy to run it on the sick mac.
I know that Norton is a bit of a biatch and it's sad that they no longer support OSX but it defintitely worked it's old magic one more time.
Such a shame it couldn't work this time.
We do run regular backups, it was a case of no boss in the office on Friday..:-)
    Cheers for the help though!
