IBook keyboard skins?

Does anybody know where I can buy a keyboard skin for an 12" iBook G4?

Most online sources I've just checked (about 20 min via search) appear to say they no longer stock them; yet there are a few with conflicting information, in part perhaps due to how they are listed. An example of a conflict exists in the instance of a link via a yahoo search (I don't usually rely on them) that says I could get an iBook/PowerBook keyboard cover at 'welovemacs.com' yet if I go direct to their own site, they say they don't have them. But I see one here...

The company has an 800# so maybe you could call and ask: http://www.welovemacs.com/xibpbwhtblk.html Some of the resellers online that offer older repaired Macs and parts may have old-stock new from that time frame; ones that specialize in portable Mac repair & parts may be a source.
Back when my iBook G4 12" 1.33GHz mid-2005 model was new, I bought a silicone keyboard protector, a nice soft neo RadTech case that stays on the Book when it is open or closed, a 1G RAM upgrade, and AppleCare. I still have that, it is still in fine shape, but seldom turn it on and it needs a replacement battery to be run very long. The two Apple batteries were hardly used at all (were warranty replacements) and super low cycle counts. If I had money to burn, I'd get a SSD installed and a new cell from OWC. An iBook is hardly worth it, though. I have a few G4 Macs and one first-edition MacBook coreduo... And losing interest in most electronic products... including smartphones, tablets, smart watches, RFID implants, drones...!
You may be able to find a failed computer with the protector included on craigslist or maybe in a pawn shop, etc. Most times the computer may be hardly worth the asking price.

IBook Keyboard cleaning/protection

Just looking for suggestions on how to clean my ibook keyboard. Or, if there are any recommended products/keyboard protectors that any one has used...

Wish I could help you out about cleaning your keyboard. I never have to clean mine as I have been using Iskin keyboard protectors for years and wash the Iskin in warm soapy water whenever it appears dirty.
Have you tried the caned product the blows air on the keyboard? Sorry, I can't remember what it's called. never use any cleaners, try Mr Clean magic eraser. Geof

Logicskin seem to get pretty good reviews.... but personally because I use custom keyboard setups here, I don't use such things myself

Keyboard skin & cooling

does a silicon keyboard skin interfere with cooling?
And, what is the path that the cooling air takes, where is the intake and exhaust?
I've been monitoring the temp w/ iStat lately, <90F. But what is an acceptable temp anyway?

Do cases that stay attached to the exterior interfere with cooling ie: silicone, neoprene or hardcases

Clamshell ibook keyboard problem

I just added some RAM to a 300 mhz blueberry clamshell iBook and upgraded to OS X. Everything went smoothly until it came time to type in the registration info, when I discovered that one diagonal row of keys on the keyboard -- the 9 O L and . keys, to be specific -- no longer worked.
Any idea what might have happened? Did I tweak something while removing the keyboard to get at the RAM? Do I need to get a new keyboard, or is this a problem with the connection ribbon?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I can't see how the Ram could be the problem from what you describe. I suggest removing and then connecting the keyboard ribbon just to make sure all the pins are well attached. The pbfixit site has good instructions if you need them...

Failing this perhaps the ribbon itself may be kinked or damaged slightly?

G4 iBook keyboard entering bizzarre letters

Hello, I have an iBook G4 that was loaned to a student here at my school. It was working fine, but now the keyboard is very funky. When I type an a, for instance, a weird combination of letters appears. The same happens for all the letters. I did plug in a usb keyboard, and it works fine. I have picked up the keyboard, and don't see anything obviously spilled there. Sadly, the student who borrowed it refuses to admit to what happened, so it's hard to diagnose.
Any ideas at all? I'd hate to pay to have it replaced or repaird if it's a simply fix. I cannot create a new account and try that because I can't enter the password to create one.

Without knowing more, one would guess there was a spill, maybe?
If the USB keyboard gave the same odd results, I would wonder about settings.
Perhaps a replacement keyboard would cure the problem?

IBook Keyboard.

I just recently got an iBook G3 for collage. I am using my iMac G5 20'' for more heavy things like Photoshop etc. I am interested about getting the G4 keyboard as I do not like the G3 ones. It is a 700mhz model so has teh exact same look as the G4 except for the keyboard. Is it possible to replace my G3 keyboard with a G4 one? I saw this on eBay:

HI Joe, I looked very closely at the keyboard on the e-bay page and the key directly beneath the escape key(esc) and the key above the return/enter on my G3 iBook are different than the e-bay page--it appears that they moved them which may not be a problem but they added a key--The one below the escape is not present on the G3 keyboard--this is a problem unless apple used a universal cable that was used on all keyboards and just opted not to use that contact on my type of G3--
I'm not saying it will not work, but I wouldn't go through the hassle of buying,trying,returning----good luck
If you care or not, Ijust plug in a regular iMac keyboard via usb for all my long inputs.

Brand new ibook keyboard faulty

So I waited a while for the new ibook to be released, took the plunge and got my first mac ever. It arrived about 2 weeks ago ordered from the apple store.
Soon after switching on for the first time I could tell something wasnt quite right. It turns out that the number 4 key is 'sticking', I only worked this out once I opened the text editor. There is nothing physically wrong with the key however. But if im typing a document I get random 4s appearing, sometime rows of them at a time. When not in text editor I get the sound of a key being pressed like its being held down. It also makes it difficult to navigate/control the drop down menus. It makes the machine difficult to use in any capacity.
So I phone the Apple help line, I explained the problem and they ran though I couple of thing like re starting the machine and setting up a new user etc. Anyway, after about 1/2 an hour on the phone (mostly being kept on hold), they guy said he was going to have a new keyboard sent out to me. Hopefully that will fix the problem, I'll have to workout how it fit it myself....there are instructions on the Apple web site apparently.
Almost a week later and Im still waiting for this keyboard to arrive. :((
The whole buzz and fun experience of getting a new 'toy' has being ruined.

My 12" G3 500mhz iBook keyboard problems

Hi, i have a 12" G3 500mhz iBook and the keyboard was working fine two weeks ago but now the "7", "U", and "J" buttons are not working anymore. I tried searching online to see how to fix it but i couldnt find anything. Is there anything that i can do except buying a new keyboard layout? thanks in advance

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Has there been anything spilled on the keyboard? Could there be potato chip crumbs in there, or something? (It's been known to happen.)
Have you tried removing and replacing the keyboard to make sure it's seated properly? (While it's out, you could put an old nylon sock over your vacuum nozzle so you don't vacuum the keys off and run the vacuum nozzle over it to clean dust out of it.)
If there are no spills, crumbs, dirt, or debris in the keyboard, and removing it and replacing it doesn't help, then, regrettably, you are probably going to have to replace it.

Water on iBook keyboard

Nearly a year ago my girlfriend spilt a glass of water on my iBook while it was on! I was outside so it took me a few minutes to rush in and turn it off. I disconnected power & battery and turned it over for a few days. It has not worked since, I have tried a few times over the months. I did buy a used motherboard from Ebay but that didn't work as it had the dreaded logic board problem. So Yesterday I tried the original motherboard it and it worked as normal! It was on for 14 hours, today it started but after 6 hours went off and is dead again. Is there any hope, why did it work so well yesterday? Should I try and dry it out with hairdryer? maybe if I give it more time but surely it would be dry after 10 months?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Do NOT use a hair dryer on it. The heat can melt electronic components.
Unless you live in a very humid climate, after 10 months it is as dry as it's going to get.
Here is the recommended procedure for handling spills:
Turn it off, but leave it open.
Turn it upside down, rotating the display toward you so that any liquid runs away from the display. From this point on in the procedure, leave it upside down and work on it in that position. Gravity is your friend and will keep the liquid from getting any further down into your iBook if you leave it upside down.
Unplug it from the adapter.
Remove the battery.
Remove the keyboard. With a clean lint-free cloth or paper towel, gently blot (don't rub) away any visible liquid.
Leaving it open and upside down, allow to sit and air dry (no fans or hair dryers) for another three days before reassembling it and trying to use it.
Never try to use a laptop that has been spilled on before disassembling and drying it out. Doing so can allow the liquid to come in contact with circuit boards and permanently short them out.
If, after allowing to dry for several days, it does not work right, try reviving it by resetting the NVRAM and PRAM in open firmware:
Start up into Open Firmware by pressing and holding the Command-Option-O-F key combination during startup.
If you get the Open Firmware prompt, type: reset-nvram
Press Return.
When prompted for your password, enter it and press the Return key.
It responds OK.
At the Open Firmware prompt, type: reset-all
Press Return.
The computer restarts (hopefully).
I post this for others who may come here, searching for what to do in the event of a spill.
After this long a time, I would suggest trying to reset the PMU and see if that does any good.

G3 ibook keyboard messed up

Im working on some ibooks for a school...one of them has a strange issue when you press the "t" key it starts typing [5tgb over and over again....
I tried swapping the keyboard out and that seemed to make it a little better but it still goes completly crazy....I tried an external keyboard and there are no problems, could this be a logic board issue??
any ideas?

Problem solved... me the n00b...
After reading the log in /var/dt/Xerrors more closely this time I found that it was trying to load module "Keyboard" for the device "Keyboard1" and was not able to find that module. The log was also suggesting that this module is deprecated and I should use "kbd" instead... Made the changes in xorg.conf and things are good now...

Ibook keyboard does not respond!

I have a ibook with tiger installed. Everything is normal...except the keyboard. There is no response when I press any key, execpt the num lock key. What a strange thing!
Any solutions please?

This is very odd. Is this iBook new to you or did the problem just start? Was anything ever spilled on the keyboard that you know of?
You can go to System Preferences>Keyboard and Mouse and check on all the keyboard settings and maybe restore the defaults and see if this affects anything.
You might also go to the Apple site and find the DIY instructions for replacing the keyboard. What you want to do is to open up the keyboard and be sure the cable is securely plugged in. It almost sounds like it might not be.
There are a couple of keyboard articles in the Apple knowledge base that might help, but unfortunately I'm on a trip and don't have the exact references. You might try going to the iBook section of Apple Support and searching for these. There is one that specifically discusses the keyboard not working.

IBook keyboard problems

Recently our iBook died during a restart after upgrading iTunes. It got halfway through the startup process and then just became a brick. I reset the PMU and it started up all fine and dandy, except now the keyboard is all jacked up. It seems like half of the keys are mapped wrong but also it will go crazy for a little bit. I'll start typing and it will start repeating things like thislk3333kkkkkkkkkkk3333333k3333l.
What can I do? Is this a mapping issue that I can reset? Can you replace these internal keyboards? Please help!

Sorry if i was unclear. the keys aren't simply repeating, they're making stuff up. So if I tap 'o' once it prints 33k3kllakdnnfdk:{. and if I hit enter it prints :0:=} then exposes. in general the whole upper left side of the keyboard is mixed up.
