Ibook logic board issue?

I just ran the hardware test on my ibook G4 and it came up with an error code
2GMC/2/15: built in
Then I ran it again and it came up fine. Any ideas?
Thansk!

Hi Matthew,
That is very interesting, I can't say anything except it is possible that Apple might want you to replace your logic board. Anything strange going on with your computer? Any problems? Anything that might have to do with Ethernet, FireWire, USB, or anything like that?

  • Is USB part of Logic Board issue?????

I am ignorant about computers, so I just learned this past week that both of the USB ports should have been working all along. I have had this computer for almost 4 years; only one has ever worked and I recently damaged that one. I was told that the 2nd port could not be repaired to work because of the board needing to be replaced. Is this part of the repairs Apple is owning up to?

Hi, Sheila. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
No. The iBook Logic Board Extension Program is for display issues only.

  • Should I repair an Ibook logic board

I can have a 12 inch ibook 1.2ghz if I pay to repair it. It was just 14 months old, had been treated with great respect, when the logic board failed. Needless to say its owner had not purchased any extended warranty. Its owner purchased a new macbook and put the ibook in a drawer because he decided it was not worth the repair. I would use this ibook to replace my old Powerbook 3400c that died finally. I see on the forums that logic board failure is a problem with ibooks and that many people replace one only to have it fail. My question is whether it is worth replacing this ibook logic board? Is there a generic problem with the reliability of these logic boards, so that subsequent failure is a hit or miss thing? Or does their failure result from other factors so that an ibook that has one logic board fail may have an underlying cause that will lead to subsequent failures? Is this computer worth saving?

I see on the forums that logic board failure is a problem with ibooks and that many people replace one only to have it fail.Although there have been some failures the absolute majority of iBook G4 users have not had any type of logic board failure.
Is there a generic problem with the reliability of these logic boards...
    No
    Is this computer worth saving?
You will need to look at the cost of replacing the logic board versus buying a new/refurbished iBook G4 or new MacBook.

  • IBook logic board - Apple service - kinda long, sorry

I am a converted PC user who got my iBook in September 2002 because, frankly, I was tired of dealing with the poor performance, terrible service, and general glitchiness of my old pc's. So a few of my friends encouraged me to try out a Mac. So I did and I fell in love with how it just seemed to work!
I've had my iBook for just over 3 years, and have had a good amount of problems. It occasionally would boot up to the sad face and I'd have to go through the whole process of reinstalling the OS while on the phone with AppleCare. This past summer, I sent the computer back to Apple because it locked up constantly and the hard drive started clicking. After about a month of sending it back and forth, they finally acknowledged that there was a problem with the hard drive (as if the loud clicking wasn't enough) and replaced it.
Ever since then, things have been ok, but glitchy. The screen would freeze, when you opened the notebook up, it would be on a blank screen, etc. Then earlier this week, it started showing lines through the screen, and it would lock up. Upon restart, it would restart with a blank screen. I thought it was a gonner.
So I looked online to try to diagnose my symptoms, and low and behold, I think I know what's wrong. The iBook logic board description on http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/ explained my sympoms exactly. So I spent an hour on the phone with customer service yesterday trying to figure out if they'll fix this. And alas, they said despite the fact that the logic board may have been failing after the July repair and despite that I've just barely exceeded the 3 year limitation for the logic board repair, they will not repair this unless I pay for it. The quote he gave me was almost enough to buy another computer.
So here I am, a guy who came to Apple for a quality product, Apple acknowledges that the logic board they installed in my computer is less than top-quality, but they refuse to replace this inferior component because of an arbitrary 90 day warranty on repairs performed in 90 days and an arbitrary 3 year from purchase date repair on the logic board.
I'm the first one to admit, they don't HAVE to do anything. I just think it's a sad state of affairs when a company that relies so heavily on a fan base, would slap a newly converted fan in the face on his maiden voyage with a Mac. I expected more from this company. If I wanted cheap junk parts in my laptop that would've only lasted 3 years, I would've bought a PC. The PC is cheaper anyway.
Now I sit with a useless shell of a computer at home and try to decide what I want to replace it with. I have to say, I love OS X, I love the simplicity, I love the security, but I'm going to find it very hard to justify it to myself and my wife to buy another Mac. I think this converted PC guy is headed back to a PC where at least you get what you pay for.

Hi, Nick. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Are you willing to try again? Call Apple again, and this time, ask for Customer Relations. Tell them your story and ask them to make an exception to the three-year rule in your case.
Customer Relations likes Switchers, and they are the ones with the authority to make an exception to the rule.
No guarantees, but they just might do it for you, especially if you plead with them, "Please, please, don't send me back to Windows!"
Usually, I advise people not to threaten to go to Windows, because why should they help you if they think they've lost you as a customer? But, in your case, it's a little different.
Personally, I would have to have about four Macs in a row go belly up before I would look to Windows, and, even then, I might just give up computers all together and rely on pencil and paper if I had to deal with Windows.
Good luck. Let us know how things go.

  • Getting New iBook Logic Board -- help? :)

Well I wasn't sure which forum to post this in, so I also put it in the 'Peripherals' forum.
Ok, here is my problem. I bought a G4 iBook 1.07ghz with a bad logic board from someone on craigslist. I am wanting to put a G4 1.33ghz logic board in it now. I found one on pbfixit.com for $550, but I also spoke with someone on ebay that said he thinks he has some 1.33's laying around. I am wanting a logic board with the two-finger-scrolling and the 'shock detection' features; also Bluetooth2.0edr and Airport Extreme. Well I asked the guy on eBay if he knew if his 1.33 boards had these features or not and he wasn't sure. Is there something he can check (model number/serial number/something physically on the board/etc) to see if he has any of the boards that's new enough to have these features? I'm not as worried about the Bluetooth+Airport Extreme because I found a module board on pbfixit with both of these in one.
    Thanks!

Hi, abburke. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
(I have lots of Burke cousins, since my cousin in Wichita had six sons.)
If the iBook is circa 2001 like the iPod, chances are that's the reason the tech says you're out of luck. There's a three-year limit on the program.
Enough dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from this problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Check out the FAQ page and if the symptoms look familiar, give Apple a call. If your iBook qualifies, it's a free fix.
If you are past the three-year time limit, try calling and asking for Customer Relations. Ask them to please make an exception to the three-year limit in your case. They have been making some exceptions to the three-year rule, but the criteria upon which they make an exception is not public knowledge. It could be how nice you are to them on the phone; it could be which tech you get; it could be which side of the bed the tech got out of on the morning that you call.
    Good luck!

  • Will a 14" iBook Logic board fit inside a 12" iBook?

I've seen pictures of the logic boards on various retailer sites, and want to upgrade my 1.0GHz 12" to as fast as possible. I was thinking about the 1.33 GHz 12" but if the 1.42GHz 14" fits then that would be pretty sweet... does anybody have any insight on this?

    "I really don't think it's worth the bother....just get a 12" one."
Whether or not it is "worth the bother" is soley a matter of what you consider a bother. To some, and I suspect this of the OP, it is very rewarding to do repairs and modifications, and particularliry mods that have not been done before. I say kudos to the OP for trying. It may be cheaper to buy a used 1.33GHz ibook but doing his proposed mod, whether he is successful or not, will make him a little better off than the "can't do's".
In fact, on this forum all I ever read is "have it looked at" or "send it to Apple" or "it is not user replaceable" etc. Nobody here ever seems to entertain the concept of actually doing something for him/herself.

  • Graphics card/logic board issues: Macbook Pro Freezing during Apple Hardware Test!

I have a macbook pro that was working fine then the screen started acting funny. It would sometimes "tile" up where you would see the same issue repeated over and over on the screen and then computer would freeze. Sometimes the screen would start to have a strobing look and then freeze. I thought the computer was crashing but once the screen froze but the processor was still running. I knew the computer was still processing because I was streaming a video online and the audio from the video continued to download and play event though the screen was frozen.
I went to the apple store and they said they think it sounds like failure of the hardrive, graphics card, display, logic board. A new hard drive was just put in the computer about 4-6 weeks ago, and if it is the other issues could be $500-$800+ to repair. I tried to use the Apple Hardware test (non-extended test) but it keeps freezes at 2 min 32 secs every time when it starts "testing the main logic board"....
Has anyone seen anything like this and have another way to test what the problem could be? Thanks!

I know you're in denial, but it really does sound like the motherboard or graphics board which is integrated with the motherboard.  Yes, fixing these things will cost almost as much as a new MacBook Pro.  Get a new one, take the HDD out of your old one, and start over again.

  • Logic board issue discussion

Hey everyone, while waiting for answers on my other post, I'm going to start this discussion to see what you guys think of this on going logic board problem. (To see my situation look at my other post.)
I think this logic board problem is very similar to the "Windows Vista" problem. They are rushing to produce so many logic boards that the quality they produce is complete junk. Alot of people are having this problem but why has Apple not yet fixed this issue? I have read alot of posts of getting the board replaced only to find out that the replacement board is also faulty.
Right now I'm just very aggrevated because the closest Apple Store is an hour drive into the city (Melbourne, Australia). I made that trip yesterday and waited as the replaced the Hard Drive and RAM only to find out today that the problem is probably the logic board. I really want to get my MBP working as I am a student and a musician. I thought this was going to be more of a good investment and not a big headache.
Also what is the process to getting the Logic Board replaced? How long does it take? And for people who are out of warranty, how much will it cost?
Luckily, I guess, I bought this Macbook about 2 weeks ago so I am still covered by the warranty but it is a shame that I actually needed the warranty after 2 weeks of the purchase.
I want your opinions! =) I do like Apple but right now I am just really frustrated >=(

Hi Bruce, sorry to hear of your frustrations. First off, Apple doesn't make logic boards. Heck, Apple doesn't make any of the parts under the hood of your computer. I'm surprised that on a two week old computer they didn't just offer you a replacement. Was the computer purchased through Apple or did you buy it 3rd party?
When you say... "alot of people are having this problem." What are you using for your sample size? How many, what proof do you have that there issue is the same as your issue? Is it with the same make/model computer that you have?
A logic board replacement is a pretty straight forward replacement. A good tech can be in and out and have service verification in about an hour (uninterrupted). Typically though the process is a 3-4 (or more) turn around at Apple Stores, simply because they will sometimes need to wait for the part and your machine may not be first in line at the time it is received.
Out of warranty logic board replacements are very costly, definitely the most expensive component to replace in the machine.

  • Logic Board Issue?

Hello. I run an external monitor off my 12" PowerBook G4. A couple of weeks ago after I reconnected the display, it would show the screen but with a green tint. I sent it into Apple and they said they replaced some internal cable after they determined it was a problem with the video-out port (which seems strange because isn't it connected directly to the logic board?) Anyways I got it back yesterday and it worked for about an hour before the external display turned green again. The internal one works fine.
Anyways I was playing Halo today and there were lots of black lines flashing on the screen at times. (been using the game for months and never any issues like it. Also tried reinstalling it but no change) Almost like static. It would happen every 30 seconds or so. I retried the external display today and it work for a second then went green again. Apple told me not to bother sending it in again but to bring it to an Apple store and have them check it out.
So any ideas as to what it could be? The distortion in Halo made me think it might be more then the port. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks for your time.

Apple store genius determined it was a bad video adapter.

  • IMac Logic Board Issue...

    Here is a little history:
Bought an iMac G5 1.8GHz in February of 2005. In October of 2005 I had the power supply and logic board replaced. In August of 2006 I had the logic board replaced again. In July of 2007 I had the logic board replaced AGAIN...
I am once again having issues with what I think is a faulty logic board. I had a "Must Restart" grey pop-up yesterday. Did an SMU reset, then restarted the computer. It worked for 24 hours. This morning it did the same thing. I restarted, but it went to a blue screen and stayed there... I did a SMU reset, and a PRAM reset. Then called Applecare and they hinted I should do a disk repair with the install disk... Tried that. The computer won't boot from the disc when pressing C on startup... just goes to Blue Screen after grey apple screen and freezes.
I tried starting up whilst holding the "Option" button. Both the Macintosh HD and OS X Tiger DVD are found, but once again, it won' boot from either. Just to the Blue Screen and that is it.
I am over 3 months from my logic board replacement time frame... besides, I think the last replacement of it should have taken care of it last July, right? I have opened up the computer, and there are 5 leaking capacitors...
I am right in thinking the Logic Board is fried, right?
What would you suggest doing? Trying to get another logic board for free from Apple, even though I am beyond warranty? I DO NOT want to pay 800-900 bucks for sure. Any other tips or suggestions? I figure I could get a SATA/USB2 enclosure for the HD if I get another mac... not to mention I am a pretty good back-upper...
    Thanks!!!

I have a first generation 20" iMac G5; the logic board failed about a year ago and was replaced under the "iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues" program at my local Apple store. It failed again last week; I returned to the Apple store and was advised it would not be covered as it has passed the 3 year mark outlined in the program and was offered a 20% discount on purchasing a new iMac (I did not feel this was a reasonable resolution). I contacted AppleCare via telephone regarding the issue as I felt Apple should support a product with a well documented defect. The "Product Specialist" I spoke to stated "my original logic board had been replaced with an updated one" and "the failure of this current logic board is unrelated to the Extension program failure". He then went on to contradict himself and stated "Apple could not / would not continue to support the logic board failures after the 3 year mark". I was offered no resolution; I am a long time Apple supporter, advocate and evangelist who has advised friends, family and colleagues to purchase Apple products. I am now extremely hesitant to do so after this incident. As this is a recurring and well documented issue with this product, I feel Apple should either replace or offer a replacement iMac at a HIGHLY substantial discounted rate to any customers impacted by this product. Hundreds of posts here and at other forums show there are many unhappy customers.

  • Logic Board Issues?

Just got back from Memorial City Mall's Genius Bar. Some old man said my MacBook's logic board is busted and he knows because the MagSafe didn't light up. I plugged in my OEM Charger and it lights up. I Google'd malfunctioning logic board and the results are keyboard and mouse related... I swear that old bag at the Genius Bar around 1:30 PM was on CRACK!!! So does it have any relations to responding to the MagSafe or... I don't think he had it plugged in. All he did has take out the battery, and told me that I fried it when I was replacing the harddrive... It turned on and was fine 3 days ago, and won't boot again since the battery is at 0 mAh. So does everything make sense? I couldn't have fried it, maybe that knockoff MagSafe fried it, but I booted with it... Or is that old man on crack and I am right? The guy didn't do anything except put the MagSafe in the MacBook and not in the outlet, and didn't try an SMC reset or anything.

If it's under warranty, call Apple and send it in for repair. If not, get a second opinion from another store.

  • G4 iBook - logic board replacement

I have a 12" 1.25ghz G4 iBook w/ dual usb that I picked up recently that has a fried logicboard - as the 1.25ghz logicboard replacement parts I've priced are frankly a bit expensive, is it possible to use a 12" G4 logicboard of a lesser speed, and if so, which would work and which would not?

    psignosis:
Take a look at these substitutions suggested by PowerBookTech:
    1.33 GHz for 1.2 GHz
    800 MHz for 1.2 GHz
You may want to contact PowerBookTech and check out the feasibility. You can also check out prices elsewhere, once you have determined it can be done.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15 inch possible display/logic board issue?

Ive had this problem when opening up FaceTime windows or notification center windows. the screenshot is provided (http://imgur.com/1h6fip4). i have run an apple hardware test the normal one and the extended one and it said it has no problems to report. I'm not sure where to go because this behavior is clearly not normal. and if its a display problem it should not register on the screen shot. If any one has any idea what to do or what tests to run, please let me know. if you have any questions regarding the model of my mac, please let me know and i will respond. I honestly do not know whats going on and I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

  • Macbookpro 13" late 2007 logic board issue'

I had this exact same thing happen to me two and a half months ago on an early 2008 MBP. Computer went to sleep during the night, came in the next morning and the sleep light going on and off like normal. I tried to wake up the computer by pressing keys on the keyboard but it wouldn't wake. I held down the power button and the sleep light turned off. I pushed the power button again to turn it on and nothing happened. No screen, no chime, nothing.
    any help

The answer is no for any one who looks at this.

  • IBook G4 (Jun 2005 model) Logic Board Problem (No Display and HDD noise)

    Hello All
I have been using my iBook G4 (1.2 GHz) with no problems since I purchased it in June 05. But over the past 2 days, I have been noticing this weird incident of "no display" when booted and I was hearing a loud fan noise at times and I can hear my HDD spinning etc. When I tried to restart pressing CTRL+OPTION and POWER after shutting it down, it booted up but reverted my PMU to a date in 2001 (resetting all my email, music etc). But when I tried shutting it down again and restarted normally, I heard the bootup chime but no display. Again, I could hear the fan and the HDD spinning.
I took my laptop to the Apple Store here in Boca, FL today and was told that its a logic board problem.
I know there was a Logic Board Repair Initiative from Apple for the G3's and early G4's. Does anyone know such a thing for the fairly recent iBook G4's??.
    Any help is immensely appreciated.
    Thanks

How do I verify that my issue is a logic board issue. Recently, computer froze. Tried a hard reboot but no luck. It either shows a blank blue screen or I'll get the grey screen and apple with the start-up spinner but it'll stop spinning.
That's it. I'm able to browse the contents of the iBook's harddrive when I connect it to my Ti Powerbook via Target Disk mode. I even lauched Disk Utility from the powerbook and verified the iBook's drive and it found no problems.
Could it be the same logic board issues that you guys are having? How do I verify this? Is it worth paying to repair an 800mhz G4 iBook (applecare expired April '06)?
I've heard about kernal panic issues with the macbooks so I'm apprehensive about getting one of those right now too. Getting frustrated. Actually considered copping an inexpensive PC laptop... ugghhh.
