IBook makes startup chime, then nothing

iBook charges battery. 700mhz/256mb/20 combo with additional RAM
I have reset PRAM, NVRAM and PMU
I press the power button, I hear hard drive start, start chime, then nothing. Something is still spinning in there...so I hold the power button down, it powers down and then the same thing happens when I try to power it up again.
I have re-seated RAM and tried booting w/o the additional RAM.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

Safe Mode? If not, I suggest that you give it a try. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). Repair permissions on it.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to help things out.
Can I boot from a CD or something...?
Which version of the OS is installed? Do you have an install disc for that version of the OS? You could try booting from that if you have the proper install disc.

  • IBook G4 - power on, chime, then nothing

I've had this machine handed down to me. It's out of warranty, and from what I can tell did actually work at one point. I've tried replacing the RAM, but nothing changes - when I power it on, I get the startup chime, then the drive spins up (as well as the fan at full blast) and then it doesn't go any further in the boot process. The screen never goes on, the drive doesn't seem to be accessed, nothing. I tried with a video adapter to see if maybe it was the display that was the problem, but that dog didn't hunt either, as they say.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

    jus..,
I too am having this same problem.
    Not exactly.
I have taken it to an Apple Store but they said that it was a hard drive failure. My hard drive is fine,
    Exactly
I'm using my iBook now with an external display.
My backlight works fine. Everytime I start the computer it chimes and then goes to the gray screen. After 15 seconds or so the external monitor kicks on and I can see the computer booting up. Are there any known solutions for this problem?
    So,
    Good backlight,
Computer works with external monitor - Good GPU
No internal video - Bad LVDS cable: either unplugged or broken.
Here's the take apart for the display:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/iBook-G4-14-Inch/Display/84/19/
Down about 5 pages where the LVDS ..Actually it's page 15 and they call it the
    "the display data cable"
If you're comfortable mucking about inside the iBook you could take it apart to the point where the top shield comes off and you can see the LVDS cable. It runs up the left side of the display. Usually where it breaks is near the hinge point if not at the hinge point. Moving the cable, esp pushing it back together might get the display working.
If that works it's a verification of a bad LVDS cable.
A complete repair would involve opening it up, finding the break, soldering and closing with heat shrink tubing.
    or:
    Replace the cable.

  • No startup multiple chimes then nothing

Yesterday my Mac Pro froze. The screen then got a strange checkerboard pattern of grey and red. I held down the power button to turn it off. I then tried to restart it. Power goes on and it makes 5 startup chimes. No video comes on. Computer seems to pause and stop sending power over to the monitor. Then it tries again with five more startup chimes. Still nothing. It just does this over and over until I shut it off by holding down the power key. What's happened?

I took it to Apple. The sad news is that it has a dead processor and a dead RAM riser card. It's going to cost $900 to repair. They're "hoping" that that is all that is wrong. I'm afraid this is all my fault. In the three years I've owned it, I never cleaned the inside of it. When the Apple guy opened the case it was caked with mountains of dust. Very embarrassing and I think quite possibly deadly.

  • Powerbook chimes when turned on, makes some noise, then nothing

So I went to turn on my powerbook and it made the chime noise, I could hear it start to boot up, and then nothing. The screen is blank, and it does not make any noise. However, it is still on, because I have to hold the power button down to shut it off. I really need my computer for school, so any input is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Melissa

    I have the same problem.
I clicked on Firefox to get it started, moved the attached mouse across the screen to click on an icon, and the screen froze. Tried rebooting using standard options but what would happen was:
    the Mac would chime.
I could hear the drive start.
Lights to hubs turn on but not enough juice to turn the light on for the optical mouse.
The keyboard will shut the Mac down.
I have been a Mac user since May, 1984 (still have my 128k)and very seldom have had assistance with problems because I try every option approved.
If I slightly depress the PMU reset button, everything starts up just fine. Can restart. Can switch drives (two external FireWire drives) and full boot will occur.
If I shut down, then restart... back to the chime and nothing else works. t did go into target mode a couple of times - the only "live" action on the keyboard other than the shutdown by the power button.
Someone suggested the PRAM battery (as he called it, the "buffer" battery). After boot, if I don't depress the button all the way, the correct time shows. If I depress it past the "click" point, it will reset to December 1969.
Any help would be appreciated and might solve both issues in this thread.
    thanks,

  • MDD light+chime, then nothing

I'm having a worrisome problem with my MDD dual 1ghz g4. It will sometimes turn off when in sleep mode. When I try to boot it back up, it comes on and chimes and I can hear the HDD spin up, but then it will just turn off. Usually after about 3 or 4 attempts it will boot up just fine.
I thought it might be the battery on the logic board, since the clock would re-set every time the machine was powered down, so I replaced it. That fixed the clock issue, but the machine is still turning off and taking several attempts to start back up.
I have no idea what is causing this. One thing I do know is that this house is pretty old and the wiring seems iffy. I have a battery backup on another machine and sometimes it will start beeping like it's lost power, but it's still plugged in and the light indicating that it's receiving power is on, so I think sometimes the power from the wall fluctuates. This might explain the MDD spontaneously shutting off, but does it explain the difficulty restarting?
    UPDATE:
I just turned on my external FireWire drive to back-up my system and it wouldn't mount. I thought that was strange, so I had a look in System Profiler and under FireWire it says "no information."
I tried to run a hardware test using Tech Tool Pro, and the FireWire test was grayed-out (unavailable). It looks like my FireWire has just stopped working!
Also, now every time I try to re-start, the machine goes through the regular routine, chimes and shuts off. This is scary--can anyone help?

Try a PMU reset. Sometimes this needs to be done after a battery is installed.
Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work! First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that didn't work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
If that still didn't get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is
Apple KB HT1317 on getting FireWire to work.

  • Powerbook G4 15" - Hear startup chime but nothing else happens

I hear the startup "chime" but then nothing.
Screen black. No light in power button or hinge button.
I can shut down by holding the power button.
Disk in CD drive, tries to work. Cannot eject, even when holding trackpad button.
Took out battery and disconnected power for 5 mins.
Tried to zap pram, wouldn't let me.
Worked fine two days ago, new problem.
    What can I do?

Sounds like you might have the dreaded "lower memory slot failure", check this knowledge base article for more information: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303173

  • IMac 27" flashes to white on startup, chimes, then goes to a black screen. It works fine on an external monitor. Any ideas how I can fix this?

I've got a late 2009 iMac 27". When I start it up, it chimes and makes all the normal sounds. The screen flashes white for 2 seconds, then goes black. The iMac starts up (if I use an external monitor, it works fine) but the screen remains black.
Weirdly, if I start it up on Bootcamp as a Windows machine, it flashes white, then flashes briefly a few seconds later on the Windows logo, then goes to black.
I've reformatted the hard drive and performed a clean install of Lion. I've got some Apple knowledge, so I've taken the front bezel off and checked for loose connections. Everything appears fine. All 4 diagnostic lights are on on the logic board.
I'm stumped. I don't want to splash out on a new LCD screen if it's the inverter or something else that's the problem
    Any ideas welcome!

Ah. I'm not able to run the hardware test because it only works on the main screen. There's no obvious way to switch to an external monitor when AHT is running, which is ridiculous if the hardware fault concerns the screen! The problem isn't with the backlight - there is no dimmed image on the screen, it is just off.
I'll just have to use it with an external monitor, I guess - which defeats the purpose of buying an iMac!
    Thanks for your help, though.

    Hi Folks
I got some Problems with my xtreme Gamer:
When I started my PC yesterday everything was fine, but after a while the sound produced some strange failures? ending in just making a horrible high noise.
I tried kinda everything I could think of (Restart, install new Beta Driver (October 7th) but nothing helped either the sound constantly was this Noise or nothing. I couldn't even see that something is playing in the Vista Sound menu. After installing the beta driver I could at least SEE that something should be playing (but only in general, not app-related) but nothing comes out my speakers.
So I tried to went back to try the latest official release (2.8) I had 2.6 before. But the Setup always tell me that I have a never Driver installed and just let me confirm some EULAs and want me to restart without installing anything. After the restart the same...
I tried to remove any Creti've Data from my system: uninstall the device in the Hardware-manager, uninstall the driver software, delete all files that could be related ti creative on any HDD and the registry, used CClenaer and Driver Cleaner Pro...
but it still tells me that i have a newer driver in stalled... (in the Hardware-Manager I got the yellow sign)

  • Refurb C2D Mini occasionally gets into startup chime loop

I'm supporting a pre-2009 1.83GHz Core2Duo Apple refurb Mini that about once a week goes into a continuous loop thusly:
Press power button, Mini gets to startup chime, then it waits a few seconds and does the startup chime again. It repeats this ad infinitum and never gets past the startup chiming. Only way to stop this is to force a power off. At that point, it will generally startup OK.
There are no diagnostic beeps or flashes on front light. Hard Drive passes all DiskUtility tests. And the Mini works fine except when this startup problem occurs. The Mini is connected to a good UPS, so I'm ruling out bad mains power as the source of the problem.
Problem is so sporadic, that I'm concerned that my local independent Apple dealer won't be able to diagnose it. This dealer also has a reputation for keeping Macs for a month or so while it waits for parts. So my preference would be to deal with AppleCare directly over the phone and via mail-in. The Mini is within the one-year warranty period, but outside the 90-days of free phone support. I'm willing to buy AppleCare to expedite the solution of this problem. But even then, I'm worried that the problem is flakey enough that Apple is going to pass on it. I'm not within reasonable range of a real Apple Store, so all interaction with Apple will have to be over the phone and via delivery services.
What are the chances that Apple would know that this Mini was returned and refurbed for having precisely this issue with its original owner?
    I'm open to advice. Thanks.

    Update.
This has happened two more times, including just now.
If the Mini is forced off by holding down the power button, it then is able to be started normally after just a pro-forma 1 minute wait.
The startup chime is about half the duration of a normal startup chime. And there is about 2 seconds between each chime during the looping.
As an additional update, I found out by talking to AppleCare that mail-in service is not available for Minis, like it is for Apple notebooks. So purchasing AppleCare would not relieve me of having to deal with my local Apple authorized service provider -- who is not likely to have the patience to experience this sporadic problem.

  • Ibook G4 grey screen, whirling cog, then nothing

The ibook has been very slow lately. Last night I tried sending a jpg file by email, it was taking more than 5 minutes, so I thought I would force quit mail. Computer wouldn't force quit, wouldn't shut down. So I unplugged and then removed the battery. Today I get grey screen and whirling cog. Have tried safe boot; resetting holding down option/command/P/R; inserting install disk and opening disc utility. Nothing works. Even removed 512mb memory module and air port card. Nothing. Am I dead? The machine is 5 years old.
If the machine is dead, is there a way to utilize the screen as an adjunct to another laptop or desktop?
    Thanks
    Ellen

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
What happens when you try to boot from the install disc? Do you still get the gray screen with the progress gear?
Do you get a startup chime?
I believe I have the same iBook that you do--the 800mHz with the 30 GB hard drive? I had the experience of mine running slow and freezing, and it ultimately proved to be a logic board problem due to a soldering failure. However, I was able to send off my logic board for a $75 reball, and it came back fixed and has been working perfectly ever since.
I can't say at this point if you have the same problem since your symptoms are a little different--I could always boot up and run for a while, for instance. I could always boot from a disc, and I always had good video. But I also think I caught my problem fairly early.
It could also be that your hard drive has gone south, but if it were just the hard drive, you should be able to boot successfully from a disc. I suspect a logic board problem. But I also think a 5 year old hard drive is ready for replacement, just on general principles.
It could even be both. While troubleshooting the logic board, I noticed that my hard drive was also failing. So I replaced it with a 120 GB drive for another $75. So for about $150, my ibook is fixed and working perfectly.
There is a lot written on this forum about logic boards and logic board shims. You might want to do a search and read about these and see if any of it seems like what you are dealing with. If you want to pursue this a bit further, please post back.
As to using the display as an adjunct, I don't know the answer to that. But I imagine that someone does.
Do you have data on the drive that you would like to try to recover? If so, please post back for instructions.
    Good luck!

  • IBook G4 makes 3 beeps and nothing else...

When I try to boot up my old iBook G4 it makes three beeps, the white sleep light flashes a few times and then nothing happens. The screen never lights up. It is plugged into a wall socket.
Is the computer just dead? Or can I boot up in a different mode?
What do the three beeps mean? Is it a death knell?
    Thanks for any information!!

You may find it useful to do this:

To check that the RAM is seated (fitting) correctly see:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iBook_G4_Mid_2005_UsersGuide.pdf
If you do not feel confident following the process involved then just take it straight to a competent Apple tech or SIG.
Swap out or borrow a compatible RAM stick to see if that makes a difference. You do not have to fully restore the keyboard, but beware of the metal backing frame that may angle down onto internal components.
If all the above reveals no change, then a full diagnostic by an Apple tech is your only likely saviour.

  • Wallstreet: Chime, then . . . . nothing.

I recently aquired a Wallstreet, which seems to have a problem. After the power button is pressed, the startup chime sounds, then . . . nothing. No fan. No HD spinning. No video. Lately. I've read many of the posts here concerning non-functioning G3 Powerbooks, tried many of the techniques listed, and still the Wallstreet stops working after the chime. Any other ideas? Thanks.
    Wallstreet   Mac OS 9.2.x

    Shemuga,
There are several hardware items you can check but I don't know how skilled/interested you are about diving into the Wallstreet. You want to remove several hardware components that may be causing a no-start but which still allows you to see if the basics still work.
Remove the optical drive and main battery > lift off the keyboard (which you have already done) > remove heat sink > remove the HD. Now connect just the power adapter and see if it will start to a gray screen with the flashing '?'. If so, insert the optical drive and try booting to a compatible CD. The Wallstreet supports a retail MacOS 8.5 > 9.2.2 CD and a MacOS X 10.0 > 10.2.8 CD.
If no success, remove all power > the top memory module > carefully lift out the microprocessor card > remove the memory module on the underside of the microprocessor card. Now reinstall the microprocessor card sans memory modules, connect just the power adapter, and see if it will start to a warning dialogue about a problem with RAM or cache memory. When you power on, you may also get "death chimes" or musical notes.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14438
If you do get a different result with no RAM, remove all power > add a memory module to the top slot > connect the power adapter > try starting. If no success, swap memory modules if there are two.
Please let me know in detail what you find.

  • When I swipe phone to open, and hit the phone icon, then make a call, most times it says "calling mobile" but then nothing happens.

Same thing here.  I'm getting very frustrated.  When I swipe phone to open, and hit the phone icon, then make a call, most times it says "calling mobile" but then nothing happens.  Then I try to end the call and hit the END button.  Sure, it looks like the call disconnected, but as soon as I try to make another call, I see the same screen (the first called) and the words "calling mobile".  The only way I can rememdy this, naturally, is powering off and restarting.  But, c'mon...$300 for a phone that you have to power down between calls???
I've got the latest OS update, no jailbreak, or anything exotic on my 4s.  What's more, when I try to make a call 2 out of 3 times, the dumb SIRI opens up and stops me from making the call.  (and, yes, I have very carefully checked my process that I am not intentionally activating SIRI with my cheek.)
Again, $300 for all this in just trying to make a call?

reset your phonr by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
