Ibook not recognizing external HD

I have an ibook g4 i.42 ghz and a western digital external hard drive that is only about 2 years old. Recently my ibook began to refuse to start up while the hard drive is plugged in via firewire (the hard drive can operate via usb also, but i need those ports for other things and firewire is faster). This had been going on for a while, but just the other day when i plugged in my external my ibook isnt recognizing it at all, even though its plugged in and the power is clearly on. Sometimes it shows up but i cant access any of the files on it, and itunes freezes when i try to open it (my whole itunes library is on the external for the sake of my hdd). I'm wondering if my hard drive has just run its course and is dead (great!) or if my computer is acting up. Any insights are greatly appreciated!

Hey saturn,
.. western digital external hard drive that is only about 2 years old. .. my ibook began to refuse to start up while the hard drive is plugged in via firewire .. Sometimes it shows up but i cant access any of the files on it, and itunes freezes when i try to open it (my whole itunes library is on the external for the sake of my hdd). Oddly enough I have a WD external FireWire 400 hooked up to my dual 1.2 G4 tower here. It's a 2407A and it's power supply died about a year after I got it. I have it running w/ the supply from an old Mac SCSI external and it's been fine for the last few years but last week it disappeared from my desktop. I looked at the FireWire bus under system profiler and in red letters it said the bus couldn't be read. I immediately pulled all FireWire connections and the profiler went back to normal (nothing connected). I found that the WD was pulling power through the FireWire cable and probably causing that bus to crash. With all cables pulled I shut down the WD external and it's supply. I then restarted the WD external and once it lit up and initialized I plugged it back into the Mac and viola it was there like normal.
So this experience just adds to my negative feelings toward WD and their general wonkyness.
I'd back up your iTunes on another drive.
Also we were talking about this around here a while back and someone said that the average lifetime of a hard drive is 3 - 5 years however a certain percentage of new drives will fail within 3 months. I think the number was 3 - 5%.

  • Powerbook G4 is not recognizing external HD

Hi. My computer is dying. I can feel it. It's doing all these weird things it never used to do, like suddenly lapse in to a grey screen where I can do nothing but restart it in order to get it working again. I have about 60 gigs worth of music and pictures that I absolutely must back up. The problem is, some time in the last 6 - 8 months, my computer suddenly stopped recognizing external HD devices. I've tried it with three separate devices now. The first two were loaners but this last one I bought. I know I meet the system requirements, and I can't think of any reason why this would be happening. I've tried 3 different devices, which rules out the problem lying with the devices. My computer used to recognize external HD's just fine. I have no idea why it stopped.
Two things worth mentioning: My battery is dead. Someone stole my battery and replaced it with a dead one, so my laptop is no longer portable. But it shouldn't be an issue of the device not receiving enough power because the computer is plugged in.
The light on the device is not a solid green; it's blinking with orange, and the device keeps making a faint clicking sound.
Any help would be much appreciated. If I can't figure out the problem here I'm going to have to take my computer to the apple store and that's always a hassle.
    Thanks

    Oh my ....
First, if you have the original OS X disks that came with the system, insert the first one (should say in small print on the label 'AHT Version x.x'), reboot, holding the alt/option key down, and choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted, choose the extended test. If you have either of the TechTool programs, they can do similar testing. Does that point out any hardware issues?
Faint clicking normally suggests a hard drive about to die. You could always download Smart Utility from http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.phps to get a readout of your SMART sensors. If you're hard drive is 3-5 years old, it may be on it's way out, and causing issues.
Have you reset the PMU? And while you're at it, might as well reset the PRAM. PMU reset is: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431 and PRAM reset is:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
    After that, what the status?

  • Usb port not recognizing external drive

When I plug my external backup drive, Lacie, into either USB ports on my MacBook Pro, it is not recognizing the drive. Not sure if I powered down incorrectly. It use to recognize it. Help.

Start by looking for the drive in the Apple System Profiler (from the Apple menu's far left Apple logo>About This Mac>More Info>Hardware (in left column) >USB.) If the drive is correctly powered and connected, it will show up here.
If it doesn't show up, the problem is with the drive. With the drive plugged in, put your ear to the drive and listen for the whirring sound the drive makes when it is powered up. If it isn't making any sound, ot's either a bad drive or a bad power supply.
If the drive is making sound , then the problem is probably the USB cable or your USB port. Try a different USB cable. This should fix the problem; if all the above tests were good and the drive still doesn't mount, it may be the USB controller in the Mac. That's a serious problem that requires repair or installation of an aftermarket USB controller.
    Hope this helps

  • Help Ibook not recognizing extra Ram!

Hi, please help, I have just fitted a 1GB ram to my ibook as recommended by the apple genius.
When I click on about this mac it still says 256ram.
Have I done anything wrong? Ive refitted it again and it still doesnt recognize it?
Is there something else I need to do?

bluebubble, Welcome to the discussion area!
Resetting the PRAM has nothing to do with it.
One or more of the following is true:
    (1) The RAM isn't installed properly.
    (2) The RAM isn't compatible with your iBook.
    (3) The RAM is defective.
    (4) The iBook's motherboard is defective and not recognizing the RAM.

  • Mbp not recognizing external display

I have a 2010 MBP 2.8 and I'm trying to connect to a 24" Samsung LCD display to use as a 2nd monitor.   I'm using the mini display to DVI.  And plugging a DVI to HDMI cord to that.
When I plug it into the tv and computer.  The screen on computer flashes blue a couple times then nothing happens.   The computer is not recognizing the display.    I'm running Mountian Lion obviously and theres no option in "Displays" in preferences.
Am I doing something wrong?  I had a old Powerbook G4 that I did this with all the time with Leopard OS.    Whats changed?

Hey all, did a software update on my partner's mbp yesterday (10.5.8, security update 2009-006) and had the same thing happen where our external viewsonic display was no longer being detected. Plugging the cable in and out of the mini display port had the same effect already mentioned here where the mbp screen flashed blue like it was about to recognise the external display, but then nothing. Selecting detect displays from display preferences also had no effect. Tried resetting the PRAM and also the PMU, still nothing. So I shut down the mbp; disconnected the mini display cable; then turned off the viewsonic monitor at the power outlet and left it off for 10-20 seconds. Then I turned the viewsonic's power outlet back on, started up the mbp, turned the monitor on and plugged the mini display port cable in and the external display was back and working properly. Have shut down/restarted numerous times since then and it's all still working normally. Not quite sure how/why this busted in the first place, or why turning the viewsonic off at the power outlet seems to have fixed it, but it might be worth a shot for those experiencing similar problems... and it sure beats having to install/reinstall a different os version (which was going to be my next option)!

  • IBook G4 not recognizing external drive

I have an iBook G4 w/OS10.3.9. Up until the past couple of days, I have been able to regularly backup my internal drive to both my Iomega and Maxtor USB drives. Now when I connect them, I either get a message indicating that they are not readable and asking if I want to format or ignore, or they just don't show up on the desktop. They work fine on my Macbook Pro w/Leopard. I also just ran Disk Warrior as well as defragging and repairing w/Drive Genius. Still is not working. The name of the drive will show up on Disk Utilities, but the verify and repair buttons are not highlighted. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Mac Not Recognizing External Hard Drive, I Want to Use the HDD to boot Windows

Let's get this stuff straight first:
The Hard Drive is from a PC that I am not using
The Hard Drive already has Windows 8.1 installed as well as all my documents and data. (from the old PC, of course.)
It does work, however after connecting it to my iMac (late 2014 / 5K Retina) it isn't recognized by Finder, Disk Utility or the (Option) Boot screen.
Yes, I understand I will need to install drivers, so I'll need help doing that as soon as we get Yosemite to recognize the HDD.
What I am wanting to do is use this external drive to run Windows from the boot up screen. But I need OS X to actually recognize the drive in the first place. Then I'll need a little help installing the drivers for Windows onto the Drive, unless those are already installed, since it was originally used in my PC? (I'm not sure how drivers work.)
Nonetheless, if it's not possible to be used as an external boot for Windows, I'd still like to use it to obtain and store files/documents on.
    Thanks guys!
    -Austin

How do you have the drive hooked up to your computer? Did you but an adapter? If so, is it one that is supposed to work with a Mac? Did it come with a power supply?
Some of those USB adapters don't work well with Macs and that could be causing problems. Test it on a PC if possible, just to make sure the adapter itself isn't bad.

  • CS2 not recognizing external hard drive as a scratch disk

I have an external hard drive that I want to use as a scratch disk but while I can navigate to have Photoshop open files from the drive, when I go to my prefs and try and select it as a scratch disk, it's not listed as an option - i.e. Photoshop only shows "start up" and "Mac Hard Drive" as choices. But when I go in that same dialogue box, and look for an additional plug-ins folder, I can navigate to the external drive. It's also doing the same thing for a thumb drive I have and two other external hard drives which mount fine.
I have restarted the program, removed the Prefs file, and restarted the program again but it still doesn't see any of the external hard drives.
    Any ideas?

    mike,
Most drives are not optimized for Mac as purchased. Unless marked otherwise, consider that every drive you acquire, whether a fast-spinning hard drive or USB flash drive comes formatted as FAT so it can be recognized and used by both Macs and Windows machines. Use Disk Utility and reformat it as HFS+ "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
Just be aware that if you are reformatting your existing drives, you need to back up your data first or it'll be gone forever.

  • Not recognizing external hard drive

When I first bought my SimpleTech 320GB external hard drive, it did work. It connected and updated everything through Time Machine. After about, a month, it just did not show up in my Devices or on my Desktop.
I've tried everything. I went to the SimpleTech site and they said to put it in the direct USB port (which I have been doing). I've tried both USB ports and even got a new USB cord and it's not working.
If anyone has some suggestions, please send them my way. I'm in dire need of some space on this thing so I can install some updates.

I am having this same problem all of a sudden. My external hd shows up in disk utility; however, it does not show up under devices or is it recognized any more by time machine. When I try and repair it, the repair fails and list a "invalid node structure" and "volume check failed". I disconnect the external hd's power source and firewire connection, reconnected, and this did nothing.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Not recognizing external drive - WD in an Enclosure...

I hate to post this given all the other posts wrt external drive not working - wish I'd read those before making a purchase....
I bought an internal WD 1TB drive, put it in an enclosure (Vantec NexStar 3) with a firewire 800 conection. Connected and formatted beutifully. Copied files to and deleted from without a problem...
then started moving some iMovie files over - left the room for a while, came back (about 1/2 hour) and the WD drive was no longer recognized. Couldn't figure out how to get it back. I've managed to get it back a couple of times over the past 3 days, but hard to figure out the sequences that make it work.
I also have a WD Network drive and it looks like there may be a conflict between the two as it is hard to get both on at the same time - though that has been successful a couple of times.
    2 questions:
    1) is there a way to set WD drives to not sleep? or to sleep in accordance with the Mac? (from all the reading of similar issues, it sounds like that could be an issue.)
    2) any idea how to check for drive conflicts on a Mac?
any other ideas about what it is would be great!!
I'm right now trying to get it connected so I can get the files off it, format it, and take it back - then purchase a Mac-specific drive from one of the known vendors I've been hearing about on this forum. (any recommendations about which would be better/best? 1TB or greater, firewire 800, for working on iMovie movies prediminently)
    Thanks in advance!

WD drive mechanisms work very well. Most of my drives are currently WD, including the one that came installed inside my iMac. I like them because they seem to run quiet and cool. It's the Western Digital branded external drive enclosures that I've seen negative commentary about in various forums.
is there a way to set WD drives to not sleep? or to sleep in accordance with the Mac?
When the drive is in an external enclosure, I believe that is a function of the enclosure, not the drive mechanism. The enclosures I currently own are from Mac-oriented vendors (like OWC - www.macsales.com) and they can sense and follow the wake/sleep/off status of the Mac it is connected to automatically. I tend to buy such products from companies that specialize in supporting Mac users, because they have fully tested their products with Macs. In addition to OWC, others include LaCie, Macally, and G-Drive.
any idea how to check for drive conflicts on a Mac?
So the new drive (Vantec) is FireWire 800. Is the "WD network drive" connect via USB? I don't think there would be any conflict if it was connected over a network.
Mac OS X does not have things like Windows drive letters, so the usual conflict is a hardware conflict, or a case of exceeding the power available on the bus (whether it's USB or FireWire). Disconnect all other peripherals except a standard keyboard/mouse. Make sure each drive works by itself. Then connect the two at the same time. Then add any other peripherals one at a time. And make note of when, and if, there is a failure.
Also, it is easy to not consider how many devices you have connected to one power strip that is connected to one power outlet. There is a limit to how much power can go through a single power outlet, so if it looks even remotely crowded, be sure to spread the power cords for the iMac, external drives, second display, cell phone charger, USB hub, printer, your desk lamp, etc. to two or even three power strips connected to separate power outlets.
