IBook not recognizing optical drivve

Help! My optical drive quit.
I was at a family reunion, burning a couple of cd's, when it wouldn't mount a blank disc anymore. Now it does not recognize the drive. With System Profiler I get the following for the optical drive:
M@TRHHT@ CD-RW BW,8022:
Manufacturer: M@TRHHT@
Model: M@TRHHT@ CD-RW BW,8022
Revision: BA00
Serial Number:
Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-ROM
Disc Burning: Not Supported
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal
Obviously Something has gone haywire. Does this mean a new drive or can I force it to rescan or something to get the right info from the drive.
Don

I have heard this is prevalent. My wife ibook 1.33 doesn't recognize the optical drive as evidenced in the System Profiler.
She took it to an Apple store while in warranty and they changed the hard drive?!
I knew that the communication between the motherboard and the optical disk was broken.
A friend has one and claims if you squeeze the case it will work. He put a C clamp on his to make it work.
My wife teaches at a college and she said that other students have the same issue.

I have a Equium A210-1C4 which will not recognise the odd.
The drive has power and spins disks but does not appear as a drive in MY COMPUTER.
It also is not recognised in the Bios.
I have updated the Bios and tried to install the firmware but get message that the drive is not found.
I have tried is in another computer and it works fine.
Has anyone had similar problems and is there a solution?
    Many thanks

You have tested optical disc drive in other computer?
Anyway, if the ODD is not recognized in BIOS Im afraid ODD controller is defective. It is mainboard issue so there is no some kind of easy solution.
I don't think you can do much about that except to exchange the mainboard.

To paraphrase the portion of the sticky above that is relevant to you:
Creative Labs does not make a sound card that ENCODES multi-channel sound into an S/PDIF output. All they can do is pass-through AC-3/DTS sound from DVDs and PCM (stereo) sound for other sources, such as games.
In other words, if you play games with multi-channel output, you must use analog/mini-jack cables to send sound to your speaker system or home theater receiver's 5./7. RCA inputs.
If you want realtime 5. encoding for games, so you can just use one digital cable from your sound card to your receiver, then you must look elsewhere, or wait for Creative Labs to release their DTS-60 ($99), which is an external device that takes 5. analog sound and creates a digital DTS stream.
If I were you, I'd ditch the Audigy 4 and get a

  • Help Ibook not recognizing extra Ram!

Hi, please help, I have just fitted a 1GB ram to my ibook as recommended by the apple genius.
When I click on about this mac it still says 256ram.
Have I done anything wrong? Ive refitted it again and it still doesnt recognize it?
Is there something else I need to do?

bluebubble, Welcome to the discussion area!
Resetting the PRAM has nothing to do with it.
One or more of the following is true:
    (1) The RAM isn't installed properly.
    (2) The RAM isn't compatible with your iBook.
    (3) The RAM is defective.
    (4) The iBook's motherboard is defective and not recognizing the RAM.

  • Ibook not recognizing external HD

I have an ibook g4 i.42 ghz and a western digital external hard drive that is only about 2 years old. Recently my ibook began to refuse to start up while the hard drive is plugged in via firewire (the hard drive can operate via usb also, but i need those ports for other things and firewire is faster). This had been going on for a while, but just the other day when i plugged in my external my ibook isnt recognizing it at all, even though its plugged in and the power is clearly on. Sometimes it shows up but i cant access any of the files on it, and itunes freezes when i try to open it (my whole itunes library is on the external for the sake of my hdd). I'm wondering if my hard drive has just run its course and is dead (great!) or if my computer is acting up. Any insights are greatly appreciated!

    Hey saturn,
.. western digital external hard drive that is only about 2 years old. .. my ibook began to refuse to start up while the hard drive is plugged in via firewire .. Oddly enough I have a WD external FireWire 400 hooked up to my dual 1.2 G4 tower here. It's a 2407A and it's power supply died about a year after I got it. I have it running w/ the supply from an old Mac SCSI external and it's been fine for the last few years but last week it disappeared from my desktop. I looked at the FireWire bus under system profiler and in red letters it said the bus couldn't be read. I immediately pulled all FireWire connections and the profiler went back to normal (nothing connected). I found that the WD was pulling power through the FireWire cable and probably causing that bus to crash. With all cables pulled I shut down the WD external and it's supply. I then restarted the WD external and once it lit up and initialized I plugged it back into the Mac and viola it was there like normal.
So this experience just adds to my negative feelings toward WD and their general wonkyness.
I'd back up your iTunes on another drive.
Also we were talking about this around here a while back and someone said that the average lifetime of a hard drive is 3 - 5 years however a certain percentage of new drives will fail within 3 months. I think the number was 3 - 5%.

  • Computer Not Recognizing Optical Drives

I put a LG DVD drive in the bottom slot yesterday and now my Mac's not seeing either optical drive. The eject button says "No drives" and there's nothing under ATA under system profiler. Both drives have power and can eject manually. If I remove the SATA cable from the LG, there's no change.
Changed both jumpers to cable select, and tried other combinations. Did an SMC reset. Put the Mac in target disk mode and ran disk utility from my iBook. I really can't think of anything else and it's driving me crazy. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Okay, I fixed the problem. Through some inane, non-Apple-like, non-intuitive nonsensical procedure.
The problem initially was that my ribbon cable had a tiny tear in it. This was caused by one of the three aluminum posts that guide the CD chassis into the Mac Pro case. Really, really bad design, because the cable is flimsy and it's easy to snag it on one of the posts because you can't see anything when you are sliding the chassis back in, it blocks your view. So I had to go to a store on the other side of town for a new cable, luckily a sturdy one is only $10.
So I had to put the new cable in, which is behind the fan. But another design flaw with the Mac Pro, and some of you already know this, is that the front fan assembly is a monstrous pain to get out. Once you work that thing out, all the while thinking, "I know I'm going to break this", you can't help but marvel at how great the G5 fan assembly was, you could pull it out just to vacuum if you wanted.
So after I put the new cable in, I pretty much ran into every problem anyone with a Mac Pro has had in putting in a second drive.
The first one was the Superdrive showed up in the eject menu, but the text was garbled as if the system was using some unknown font. Like in the old days when you had to disable a fractional font because it was taking over your internet browser. I tried to put in a Leopard DVD, and it asked me what I wanted to do with the blank DVD. It did the same thing with a manufactured music CD.
So I tried to flash the drive with the NEC version on the web, but I was told by the Terminal that permission was denied even though I was logged into as the root user. So I thought I'd play the shell game with jumper settings again to no avail. Then I thought, what about Windows, I'll boot into that. But it saw neither drive.
When I booted back to Leopard, the eject button in the menu showed no drives again. But Superdrive was listed in Apple Profile. So I exhausted any way I could think of getting the Superdrive to work.
So I unhooked the master IDE and hooked it to the LG. It popped up in both the eject menu and Apple Profile. So I took the chassis out and swapped the drives. No sooner had I started back up again, then both trays ejected. Only the superdrive was listed under eject in the menu, and it wouldn't shut the tray. LG wasn't listed at all. When I pushed either tray in, they both opened.
I'd already changed jumper settings maybe 20 times in the last few days (they both were on cable select), but I did it one more time, and now everything is completely fine. I set the LG as master and the superdrive as slave.
However, they won't be allowing Macs in the mental institution I will surely be going to now.

  • IBook not recognizing AirPort Card

i have an iBook G4 800mhz, which i determined would need an AirPort Extreme Card to work with my Extreme Base Station. i was able to order this from an online source, and downloaded instructions from here for the installation, which seemed simple enough. i have now installed the card three times, but when i restart the computer, and open the AirPort utility, it says that I do not have the correct hardware. it also seems like when i reinstall my keyboard, that it does not exactly lie flat. any suggestions?

Are you sure you have a working Airport card?
Have you tried a guide from here?
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/
If you have installed the airport card right, the keyboard should be exact the same as before. Otherwhise you did something wrong.

  • IBook not recognizing iSight

    Hi,
I recently inherited and iSight from a friend, but when I plug it into my iBook, the green light stays on for a few seconds, as if the iSight is starting up, and then it goes off.
However...when i start up with the iSight plugged in, the green light stays on permenantly, but it doesn't come up as a device one my Mac. Even when I look for it under the Firewire part of System Profiler, it doesn't come up.
Since it's not under warranty any more Apple wont replace it.
Has anyone heard of this problem? Is it my iSight, or my Firewire cable?
    Help would be....Awesome!!

    You're welcome, gavsten
The only way I know to tell which part is causing the problem is to do the tests.
If you cannot borrow or rent other equipment, you can buy it at any computer or electronics store.
If you do not have local access, the Apple "Store" link at the top of this page offers it via internet.

  • Ibook not recognizing RAM

ok, so my brothers laptop has the 256 MB built in, then it came with another 256 Stick in it, however, it said that the computer only had 256 (which was the built in), so we replaced the RAM stick with another 256, and it still isnt' recognizing it, still says just 256 built in... what is goin on here?

i know the RAM is good, becuase i bought a new stick for mine (identical laptops) and i gave him my old working one, i just bought a 512 instead of a 256 that it came with, so i am sure that the RAM is good, we don't have a bootable disc, cuz we got em from a school and all they gave us were the laptops and the power adapters. so ya, it isn't really worth it to replace the logic board in them, cuz one of em, the logic board was crap, and so we bought 4 and only have 3 working ones, so, if it is the logic board, consider this question answered.

  • IBook not recognizing battery

My ibook 366 indigo doesnt recognizes its battery, even when its plugged in, I have Mac os 10.3 and updating it to Mac os 10.3.9. Any ideas?

All rechargeable batteries have a finite life and just need careful disposal once they no longer hold any charge (contact your local council about battery disposal).
I believe that if you buy a battery on eBay the chances are that it'll be the same age and use as the one you have now and hence a con. Go to a reputable seller like OWC.

  • IBook G3 hard drive not recognized

I have a challenge for anyone. I have a ibook 366(clamshell) that is not recognizing the hd. It was working wonderfully one night I shut it down and the next day I get the flashing question mark. I've tried all of the normal stuff: zap pram, reset nvram tried to use command and s but it didn't go to the programmers screen and all the such. I can boot from a cd but none of the utilities see the hd. I have taken the hd out and connected it to a usb to ide cable that allows me to use it as an external drive and it is recognized without any problem on all of the other macs I connect it to and even on a pc (I know I said the bad word.)Does anyone have any clue what could be the issue. Every thing else seems to work fine. Just the hd is not being recognized. I even put in a different hd. I even formatted the drive using one of my macs that I only have 9.2.2 on and installed a os on it and it still didn't work. The hard drive worked fine and the os with all of its components seemed to be fine. I know it's an older system but it's something that I can let the kids play on and not be concerned with losing any of my files.
    I appreciate any help

  • IPad not recognized within iBooks for Proofing

When you load an expanded/unzipped ePub folder with the .epub extension added into iBooks using the File/Advanced/Add ePub to Library as Proof option, you select the purple "Devices" button and within the header of your ePub proof window, you should see your tethered iPad as a selectable device to proof from. However, I have one Mac Pro station that will not recognize any iPad that is connected. Whereas, an exact duplicate workstation, with the exact same specs and software, can see the very same iPads and connect to them. Has anyone seen this problem? It seems to defy logic.
This problem has existed since the release of Yosemite, when Apple deprecated "BookProofer". If anyone has seen this issue and/or has solved it, it would be tremendously helpful to know the solution. The Apple iBooks team is currently working on the problem, but has not found the solution.
