IBook not turning on / booting into firmware

My iBook that I bought last August just after the latest update has been having some serious issues. I will start at the beginning:
A few months ago, my computer would randomly kernel panic and I would have to reboot. The kernel panics, and then freezes and even blue screens of death became more and more frequent, to the point that I couldn't use the computer. I checked the system crash log, and found that the computer was always crashing after a message related to the Airport extension. I disabled the extension by moving it to my home folder, and the problem was temporarily solved, except I now had no wireless.
I got on line and read a Knowledge base article that said that the problem could be solved by updating the system software, and so update I did. And when the update replaced the Airport and Airport2 extensions, the computer would freeze immediately after startup. By booting into safe mode (press and hold shift right after the chime) I managed to boot up and disable the airport extensions again.
Now, I've been running my computer for about a month without rebooting, and I was going on vacation for a week and so I shut it down. When I came back and booted up, I was booted into the firmware. Whenever I boot up I get either firmware or a blank (dark and black) screen. I cannot boot from a system cd. I cannot boot from an external HD. I tried resetting the PMU, the PRAM, and I've tried booting from just power adapter, just battery, and both. In the past three days i've tried to boot up about thirty times, and once, it did boot up (in safe mode) and as soon as I logged in, a dialog box came up saying that the Apache and MySQL files in /System/Library had the wrong permissions, and it asked for a password to fix them and then told me to reboot. I thought it would reboot, and yet I am once again stuck with non-booting iBook.
I have webserver Xkit installed -- could that be part of the problem? I've tried an Archive and re-Install a few months ago when the problem first occured, and it did not help, leading me to believe that this is a hardware problem.
Any advice on how to fix it myself, or, if not, how do I get it fixed in Italy? I'm an american but I'll be in Italy until May. Is there an Apple Store in Rome? Does anyone speak English there? I speak pretty good Italian but not good enough for complex situations like this.
Does Apple have an Italian phone number I can call, or better yet, a toll free one?
Thanks,
--Schvoo--

Hi Schvoo,
Welcome to Apple Discussions
I believe the iBook G4 has a built in Airport Card; I don't think it comes out. You might want to log your kernel panics and post them on Apple Discussions so we can help troubleshoot your problem. You might want to look at Knowledge Base Document #106227 on What's a "kernel panic"? (Mac OS X) and How to Log a Kernel Panic from Knowledge Base Document #106228.
The Webserver could be the problem; uninstalling shouldn't hurt. I am guessing you can always reinstall it. You might want to look at iBook - Service FAQ.

  • Mac Pro not able to boot into 64 bit kernel?

    Hello,
I've been trying to boot while using the 6 and 4 buttons held down to no avail. This mac pro was bought in 2007 (work computer). Am I not able to boot into 64 bit mode with Snow Leopard? If so, does that mean I can't take advantage of the 64 bit kernel?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Man, Yes, when I am rendering all 8 cores in Maya, up to 4 gigs of ram are being used. Why is that so hard to believe? I should be able to render in RAM preview in After Effects a whole lot more than i can now without cacheing.!!!!
Is Maya a 64 bit application? If Maya is not using more than 4GB, than you should be talking to the Maya developers.
You should be able to use Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor and look at the "Kind" field. If it says "intel (64 bits)", then it is a 64 bit application.
How many times do I have to state "YES, I will be using more than 4 gigs of RAM per program"?
Why is it the tech people really don't understand how intensive program dynamics like Maya and Blender are,
You are responding to my post, so I'm going to say, I have been working for major computer manufactures since the early 70's working with "Big Iron" computer systems, not PCs, and I most likely know a lot more about how computers work, then many computer users. Please do not tell me I do not understand. I've been working with 64 bit code since the early 90's.
and yet Apple touts their excellence in 64 bit programs like AFX, yet, I can't use more than 4 gb of RAM?
Are you saying AFX (is that After Effects?) is not a 64 bit application yet? If not, then I suggest you talk to Adobe, not Apple.
Just for fun, I wrote a sample program, which allocated a large amount of memory. I ran it on my iMac with is booted with a 32 bit 10.6.2 Snow Leopard kernel. Here are the results:
PID RESIDENT VIRTUAL PageFlt Reclaim COMMAND
    54296 4.74G 9.32G 0K 0K tmp
My program has more than 4GB of physical RAM (4.74GB), and a virtual memory size of 9.32GB.
If I use Activity Monitor, I can see that my program is listed with a Kind of "intel (64 bit)".
So if Maya cannot use more than 4GB of memory, it is a Maya problem. Talk to the Maya developers.
We aren't cows Apple. We are people with limited money trying to make it in the world. Not every mac pro user is a business and we don't want too much control.
You are not talking to Apple, just other Mac users. If you wish to tell something to Apple, I would encourage you to use either:

    You do not have insurance.
You do have a one year warranty on workmanship and materials.
Call Apple and set up an appointment to have them look at it.
They should fix it ot replace it for you.

  • Problem free ibook now can only boot 'open firmware,' help please!

I reasently went to play with my ibook, just opening it from stand by mode and it popped on but everything was frozen for some reason. So i ended up forcing it off and rebooting it only to find that it only wants to boot open firmware. I tried reseting the nvram but that didn't do anything either. What should I do?

You could see if it will boot into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to help things out.

  • IBook not turning on correctly

I am working on a friend's iBook G4 and when the power button is pressed, the fan immediately starts. Sometimes I can get it to boot into OS X, I log in, and then It usually crashes after about ten minutes, but up till that point, everything works normal. Has anyone else had this problem or know what it could be caused by or what I should do?

Yeah, I am having the same problem. Except all that happens is the fans come on. It never boots up not even for a few minutes to get some files off of it. I sent it in for repairs today. When I find out what is wrong with it, I will post a new message.

  • IBook (mid-2005) keeps booting into Safe Boot

My nephew's old iBook 12" 1.33 (mid-2005) has a curious issue. Every time he restarts, the screen reports Safe Boot., even though he's holding down no keys to get there. I had him check in case any keys were stuck, especially the shift keys, of course, but all were functioning normally.
He's restarted several times, to no avail. He can't escape from Safe Boot.
Anyone know why this would be happening?
    Thanks

    Hi, Niel--
Unfortunately, I forgot to mention I had already tried that to no avail. The only thing that's worked so far is something he did by accident.
I told him to restart into single-user mode to use fsck on it. I said to hold down the S while restarting. He never let up on the key until the words, Booting into Max OS X appeared. Somehow, holding down the S through all that rebooted him normally. I still don't quite know how.
But he still can't reboot normally without going through single user mode even after that. I'm baffled.

  • Not able to boot into Ubuntu live CD or USB - Satellite A300-13S

    Hi there,
I hope someone can help me on this. I've just got a new A300-13S pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium. I've managed to create a recovery DVD (after having the same hassle about having to use a specific brand of DVDs, as mentioned in other posts), and have tested the DVDs, which work fine.
My problem is this: I would like to dual-boot with Ubuntu 8.10 and so have created a live CD to test that everything works before I carry out a full installation. I rebooted, but the laptop doesn't seem to see the live CD and boots straight into Windows. I have tried both the boot manager on F12 and changing the bios boot order via F2. Strangely enough, when the bios boot order is changed, Windows then can't see the DVD drive (via My Computer - I haven't checked other routes to the drive).
I know that the DVD drive works during boot-up because I can boot into the Windows recovery DVDs.
I thought that it could be a disk compatibility problem, but I can access the contents of the ubuntu CD (when the HDD is first in the bios boot order). I've also tried copying the files to a USB stick. The laptop can see the drive during boot-up, but won't consider the iso as a valid system. I've done the relevant md5sum checks and they are all fine. The live CDs also work in another computer.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance - this is starting to drive me a bit nuts.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried changing the SATA setting but that doesn't seem to have solved the problem. Any other ideas?
    Cheers in advance

    Hi Yann31,
Just a possible solution I'd like to put out there..
Maybe plugging the headset to the other power source for a longer period of time (15-30 min) might get it to work?
Sometimes trying to charge drained headsets and turning it on immediately does not work.
Or if you already did this, do you have another power source you can try troubleshooting with?
    Cheers!

  • Ibook not turning on after pram reset

I got 512 mb of ram for my 366 mhz blueberry ibook clamshell. When i put it in i reset the pram please help i have been letting it sit now. Please help

    Hi there Knuckles.
The first thing I would do in this situation is double check that you've installed the ram correctly. Follow apples recommended guide for installing third party ram.
Then, double to check to ensure that the ram you've selected is indeed compatible. It's an odd problem that one specific app isn't working after a ram upgrade, so you may need to look into some troubleshooting steps.
    Kind Regards.
    - Mike.

  • Can not turn on(booting) my blackberry Q10

    Dear. Sir or Madame
I was using BlackBerry Q10 with no problem but all of a sudden it stoped, went out of power and won't reboot.
I am living in Korea, South and I have bought it via an overseas purchasing agent.
Since there is no A/S center in Korea, I don't know what can I do to get it fixed or be covered by the warranty.
Please let me know as soon as possible.
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Connect it to the wall outlet charger, and let it charge for an hour or so, and then with it STILL connected to the charger, remove the battery and insert for reboot.
If that doesn't initially work, leave it connected to charge longer, and repeat.
You might also try with the SIM card removed.

  • Can Mac mini boot into 64-bit kernel

    http://macperformanceguide.com/SnowLeopard-64bit.html says:
To determine if your Mac has 32-bit or 64-bit firmware, copy/paste the following command into Terminal:
    ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi
    ...output:
    | | "firmware-abi" = <EFI64>
As shown above, the firmware-abi has the value EFI64, indicating that my Mac Pro is 64-bit capable. If it reads EFI32, then your Mac cannot be booted into a 64-bit kernel.
...well, my Mac mini displays that EFI64 64-bit info, but when booting with the "64" keys down it nevertheless uses the 32-bit kernel.
So can the Mac mini boot into 64-bit kernel?

What you are missing is that Apple has written into the boot ROM for certain Macs which meet the criteria to not be able to boot with the 64-bit kernel. The Mac mini is not allowed to boot into 64-bit mode by Apple. There is a list of non-pro Macs hard coded into the EFI boot firmware that tells it not to allow these Macs to boot into 64-bit mode. The Mac mini is on the list! Try as you may the Mac mini will not do it without a hack.
If you google this issue you can find a hack to rewrite the boot firmware and allow the mini to boot into 64-bit mode. It can be dangerous to your mini if you make a mistake!
    Here is one hack;

(my probable guess is hardware malfunctioned?) If the hdd is no longer detected in the bios then the possibility is that you have a crashed hdd and therefore need to replace it. Just to be sure, go to bios and set everything to default. Save and exit. See if you can now see the hdd in the bios.

  • Boot into WDS from external PXE

    Hi there,
in our Company (huge datacenter) we use ONE PXE-Bootmenu for ALL Servers (not managed by me) to boot into different deployment-systems (predominant Linux-Based deployments). Now we want to implement WDS (on Server 2012 R2) to boot into Windows-Deployment-Services.
Now I asked the Team which is managing the DHCP and PXE to add a new Option to the PXE-Bootmenu so we can boot into WDS. On that machine there is ONLY WDS-Service running.
What do they need to setup? Which file must be linked from the PXE-Menu? Which path? Do I have to make any additional settings on WDS?
When I search the web, I can only find infos how I can setup SYSLINUX on a Microsoft WDS, but not how to boot into WDS from an external PXE.
    Please can someone help?
    Regards
    Miranda

I wasn't referring to the setup, but the menu. The menu and config files are the same regardless of what the host OS is. I posted it as a reference to how it is possible to boot WDS from PXELinux, but the specific example is where the WDS is on the same
    server.
Chainloading is definately what is needed, but even that iPXE link is chainloading via HTTP (hence my Apache/IIS remark)... I do not know how you can PXE boot a WDS via HTTP.
Windows Server also has a WDSUTIL command that sends out a "browse" option with the PXE Boot request. The result ends up being you can press F11 or F9 instead of F12 and the client machine will search the network for PXE servers. This is how I
currently manage having multiple PXE servers. My default option is to press F12 to do a Legacy PXE boot to the main server, or use F11 if I want to boot to the Linux or UEFI server. See here for that example:
    http://www.stephan-schwarz.net/?p=58
If Linux has a similar option, it could be used so you can choose a different PXE server. Otherwise, still have to research how to chainload to an external server, without using HTTP unless someone knows how to PXE boot WDS via HTTP.
EDIT: pxechn.c32 looks promising to add a menu option to chainload to another server:

  • Added third partition and cant boot into Windows.

So I had windows 8.1 bootcamped, and being the idiot i am, created a third partition, messing up my bootcamp. I am unable to boot into Windows now. I suspect my mbr and gpt are out of sync, but do not know how to fix this. By the way, both disk utility and finder show that the bootcamp partition is there, but there is not option to boot into it on the boot selection menu thingy.

Back up your data. Erase then format the drive. Reinstall OSX and Windows.
