Ibook power module problem

hello everyone,
I'have a short-circuit on my power adapter,
It's burn a diode on the power circuit,
this diode have three pins and its name is 8HC.
This diode is soldered at D1 place.
You can see it on the right top of this picture:
http://www.powerbook-fr.com/IMG/jpg/25-3.jpg
I want to replace this diode but i don't have the real reference, 8hc is just a constructor reference.
Thanks a lot for your help
IBOOK CLAMSHELL M6411   Mac OS 9.2.x

Hi Jeff,
First and foremost let's find out the reported health of your battery.
Go the Blue Apple at the top left of your screen, then 'About this Mac'. Then select the 'More Info' button. Click on 'Power' on the left. Then scroll down slightly until you can see 'Battery Information'. Select/copy/paste the info into a reply to my post.
The symptoms you describe indicate that you do need a new battery but with the info requested above we can give a definitive diagnosis.
In answer to your questions:
Q "I've seen the articles and posts about resetting the VMU or whatever it is, but I"m a bit put off by the warning about that wiping out RAM."
A The reference to 'RAM Disk' that you have read is a reference to an archaic facility in, I think, OS 8 and earlier. It is not relevant to OSX.
Q "Is that something I should try?"
A There is absolutely no reason why not.
Q "Is there any danger of losing any files or settings?"
A Other than, temporarily, time and date, no.
Q "Is pulling the battery out and replacing it repeatedly likely to cause damage?"
A Not unless you were doing it while the iBook was booted.
Q "Does this sound like it's just a battery that needs replacing?"
A Probably, but with the info requested we'll know.
Q "Is the fact it started happening immediately after the Firewire migration completely a coincidence?"
A I would think so. Nothing can happen to the iBook during migration that would have caused this, or any other, problem.
You might like to check with:
https://support.apple.com/ibook_powerbook/batteryexchange/main?id=qp
to see if you qualify for a free replacement under the iBook Battery Exchange program.
Good luck and post back.

    Hello guys!
I bought recently external LaCie DVD burner (USB). I experienced problem connecting it to iBook. It suppose to be possible to be powered up from USB but only possible way to power up burner only via external power supply. Is there is any possibility to adjust power in iBook so burner will work. I'v checked possibility to use it only powered form USB on MacBook of my friend - it works smooth only from single USB...
    Thanks for any suggestions,

  • Fixing iBook power problem

I wanted to share an experience I had fixing my son's iBook for a problem that seems common on this forum. The power light on the end of the charging cable was not always indicating the right color. The charging icor in the menu bar was often giving the wrong indication showing no AC adapter was attched, even though it was. Wiggling the connector or applying pressure on it to one side would cause the light and icon to show correctly but as soon as the sideways pressure was removed from the connector, it would act up again.
I suspected mechanical damage internal to the iBook so I used a take-apart guide (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/iBook-G4-12-Inch/83) and removed the small power board, called the DC-In board in the referenced guide, that the charging connector attaches to. By looking at it with a magnifying glass I was indeed able to see that the solder had cracked on several of the pins that attach the power connector to the board. Using a soldering iron and some fresh solder I was able to touch up all the solder joints. When I reassmbled the iBook, it was working perfectly again.
I realize this type of repair is not something everyone can perform for themselves. But for those who can, consider it. And for those who can't, use this as a big clue where to tell a technician to look to fix the problem, assuming your iBook is having similar symptoms.
I'll stop short of calling this a product defect on Apple's part, but looking at this design mechanically and critiquing it, I can see why Apple went to Magsafe.

Wow excellent detective work and fix. I'd suspected this problem on a lot of posts.
I don't know if I'd blame Apple on this, people walk away, trip over that cord all the time and the constant plugging and unplugging. I think Magsafe is a great solution. I don't see anyone else doing that.

  • X200 black screen and beep sound when power module is plugged on and off

    Hello,
I have the following problem. Today I turned on my X200 without power module, and when I plugged in power - the screen starts to flicker. This was not before, and I am using my laptop only during a week.
After that I turned on the laptop with power module, it was OK, but when I plug out and plug in power module, computer makes "beep" sound and becomes black for a second. Is that normal behavior?
    Thank you!

does your battery hold a full charge. is it in good shape.  is your machine under warranty. you could try support, but they're probably just gonna tell you to open a service claim.  another thing, did it always do this or is this something that just started. did you just download any updates and this started right after. or did it just start doing this for no reason.

  • Catalyst 6500 Module problems

    Hi,
We are almost a week dealing with a very instable 6500.
What we see is that modules are undergoing a soft reset. When this reset fails the module has a faulty status. Resetting the module mostly solves the problem. But in some cases more then one module has this problem. Even the supervisor module is undergoing the same soft reset some time.
Here are the messages that appear in the logging.

    What has been done:
Since module 5 always reboots first, this card had been replaced. Then we replaced the supervisor. Since still cards where rebooting we replaced the entire chassis. The power modules have also been replaced.
    Anyone seen this problem before?
    Many thanks!

  • Officejet 4500 power module blinking . cant power on

panel blinks also.printer wont power on. just unpacked printer. ready to return .any suggestions?

    fformica01,
Lets try resetting the power module. Remove the module from power and printer for 30 seconds. After the 30 seconds plug the power module into a wall outlet directly. Power strips can cause some problems occasionally when there is a voltage or amperage drop across the strip. If the reset and wall outlet trick does not work the printer likely requires servicing. Let us know if it helps.
    Best of Luck!

  • Using DC supply to power module

I am planning to change my power infra into a all DC to get rid of clumsy UPS system. Other goals are simplifying the power infra, having true no-break system and increase energy efficiency
Is it possible to run, say Catalyst 6500, with 220V DC input?
I know that all power modules are made with SMPS architecture and can run on both DC & AC power supply but zero-crossing detectors, if installed, inside power supply module is making the trouble.

The key to erasing media with a magnet is relative motion. Either the magnet (or it's field) must be moving or hte media must be moving. With a Hrd Drive (wheter it is in an iPod, a laptop or a desktop is spinning. If you place a permenant magnet next to it ther eis relative motion and you can get erasure. If the drive is powered off, this is much harder to do.
The drives themselves (and magnetic tape erasers) use fluctuating magnetic fields to do the easing.
The shuffle is 'solid state'; it has no moving parts. It would be very, very hard to erase it with any magnetic field, especially one from the power connector which is not fluctuating. Put one or 2 unneeded files on the shuffle and test it. Hold it near that magnet or a stronger one and see if the files are damaged. I expect they will survive.
What has happened to me (and I expect has happened in this case) is that you did not wait for the Mac (or the PC) to finish writing to the drive before removing it. When I get in a hurry I usually end up reformatting mine. The drive must be ejected from both computers (on the pc this can take 2 steps) and you must wait for the lights to go out before removing it.

  • Using 12V DC to DC converter as iBook power supply in car

I've built a power distribution box for my 12 volt accessories in my car. I bought a Carnetix DC to DC converter to power my VGA touchscreen connected to my G4 1.42 ghz iBook. It can also provide stable 12 volt power for a laptop, with settings of 18, 19 or 20 volts.
Anyone know which voltage to set the converter at, or if this will even work? I've searched the forum, but I can't seem to find a clear indication of the voltage needed for the iBook.

    Hi David,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
The iBook power adapter has an output of 24v @ 1.875 amps. I think you would be better off using a 12v DC to 120v AC inverter along with the power adapter.

  • Deskjet 9800 power module

I have spent nearly six weeks attempting to find a replacement for the power module. First off, I assume that getting no reading what so ever on a multimeter that my module is bad. The part number does not match any part number by HP. The unit was manufactured in January, 2007. The part number agreed upon was C8165-67062. As this is an enclosed case power module that is attached to the printer there is no way to test a $.50 diode or some other cheap part that may have gone bad without removing the casing. I contacted IMPACT, as suggested by chat personnel, and they quoted a price of 30.00. Another support person contacted me by email and said that the part is no longer made and I should send the part in to be repaired. I ordered the in stock part from IMPACT, which suddenly became unavailable and had to be ordered from HP at 90.00. The entire support thing had been elevated to some higher-ups, where it was suddenly kicked over to business support and no contact from them in over a week, (reported to contact me within 24 - 48 hours). At the elevated contact, the support person agreed with me that HP should have the part as the printer is not that old. None of the suggested contacts I tried had the item. Has anyone had any success in opening the sealed power module and testing the parts? I do not wish to spend  1/3 - 1/2 the cost of a replacement printer on a power module that may burn out again, nor the same amount or more on "bench time" for a 50 cent part when other more reliable printers are available from outside of HP. I have read the environmental impact statement that HP has published and can't help but wonder how truthful it is. It puts the environmental impact directly on the shoulders of the consumer. Much the same way support has worked out. As the sale season is in full swing and of limited amount of time, I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could offer. Just please don't tell me to contact anyone at HP. I can not do another complete circle of dead ends.

I have since sent letters and emails to several different organizations. That this module is incongruous with HP's environmental policy statement is an understatement. HP does offer to recycle it for free, or I can donate it, or attempt to circumnavigate the order process and purchase the part at a minimum of 40% higher cost from HP's partners, or go third party or auctions. Again, this printer was manufactured less than three years ago. A little young for parts to be put out to pasture don't you think? Apparently, I am not the only person who thinks so. Consumers Affairs will be publishing my letter(s) of complaint. I will soon begin my campaign of exposing the real HP environmental practices as opposed to their statement.

Hi Sue, Are you using the iMac install disc on your iBook? The firmware on the iBook is different and will not be reconized. Did you migrate your iBook to your iMac? I can run a clone of my iMac on my iBook with no problems via firewire. So I think it is possible to do a restore from your iMac to your iBook and upgrade that way...But make a back up just in case!!!!

  • Power supply problem a little better after unplugging imac for 24 hours

    Hello,
I'm currently having power supply problems (at least I hope it's the power supply and not the mother board), similar to many others I've seen on these boards. What I've noticed is that if I unplug my iMac for about 24 hours I can get it to run again for a little while. Unplugging it for a few minutes (or even 8 hours) doesn't seem to help. My iMac won't get much further than the starting chime before it loses power. But it seems to me that unplugging it for 24 hours has gotten me between 5 days to 5 hours of use before I unexpectedly lose power.
Is there anything to account for this or am I just imagining things? Ultimately, I don't think the answer will help me much, but I am curious to know. I'm taking my iMac to a Mac Genius tomorrow to see if they can help diagnose the problem. I saw a little hit in my video today, which was a first, so I suspect the problem may be getting worse. I'll probably be buying a new power supply soon.

I'm having the same problem. They say to restart you have to unplug the power, wait 10 seconds and then plug it back in but apparently it's not enough. I have to unplug for about 30 seconds, plug back in, and wait anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours before it'll start up again properly. The last time I had this issue was in october '06- when I had a new logic board and power supply put in. Now I'm worried because my applecare is expired by about 3 months. I bought the computer in feb. '05. I hope a new board doesn't cost more than what the computer itself is worth but I'm afraid that'll be the case...

The chargers for the 3GS and 4S are the same.  That's not your problem, unless they are both defective.
Plug it in to mains power for at least 15 minutes.  If it doesn't automatically come on, try a Reset... press the home and sleep/lock buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
