IBook problems

I have a problem with my iBook similar to what someone else in a previous post had. Mine is a little different though. Here it is: I started my computer the other day, opened iTunes to find that a little over 2000 of the 2300 songs I had were gone. I still have the files on my drive, but iTunes is completely useless to me.
Every time I open iTunes, I get that little spinning wheel and the program freezes up. Yesterday I ran my hardware test disc and it found a problem with mass storage, just as I suspected. The thing is though, everything else on the computer works fine. My question is do I have to replace my drive? Or is there a way to get iTunes to run properly without replacing it?

Hi (CL),
If you haven't tried to repair the drive with Disk Utility, do that first. Start from the install CD/DVD and choose Disk Utility from the menu. Highlight the drive on the left and then click on Repair Disk. If errors are reported in red and it says repairs were made, repeat until there are no errors. If it can't repair it, post the error message. Also check the drive's SMART status.

  • Ibooks - Problem with configuration of my iPhone. Please Restore?

I had bought a book on my iPad today .. and I sync'd it with my iPhone so I can read it on my iPhone as well .. but when I open the book it says " There is a problem with the configuration of your iPhone. Please restore with iTunes and reinstall iBooks."
anybody know what is going on?

    Hi Kern,
It sounds like you jailbroke you iPhone. Try restoring it and setting it up as a new device.
    This article discusses that error.

  • Application to iBooks problem: iTunes account already used for apps

    Hi,
I work at a publishing company, where we have an iTunes Connect account we use to sell apps to the appstore. I'm trying to use this same account to distribute iBooks as well. So I go to the application portal at https://itunesconnect.apple.com/WebObjects/iTunesConnect.woa/wo/7.0.0.9.7.3.1
where it says you can submit multiple different media type using the same accoutn as long as you apply seperately for each. I choose Books from the dropdown, then fill in my First/Last name, AppleID, and password, check the box to agree, and then I get the following error:
"The iTunes Store account entered has already applied to distribute Apps on the iTunes Store. To continue with this application, you must enter a different iTunes account."
I don't understand this as it seems to contradict the other information about being able to sell multiple media types with one account. Am I supposed to make a new AppleID? A new iTunes account? What do I need to do to sell iBooks?
    please help!
    many thanks

I have registered with iBooks, but will also need to sign up to sell Apps really soon. Posts in the thread confuse me a lot, since they are mixed to the point of being mutally exclusive.
So do I really need a separate TIN/EIN and company or what?
I mean Apple is quite specific that I'll need another Apple ID for every time of content
"If you currently have an iTunes Connect account to sell another media type, you cannot create a second iTunes Connect account with the same Apple ID. You’ll need to set up a new Apple ID and use it to complete a separate book application."
But - really will Apple  flag a mistake for using same legal address, company name and etc?
Still hope @sfomel is right and/or I'll be lucky not to face all the above mentioned problems.
Will definitely post here to tell how it went. In the mean time I suggest using that e-mail [email protected]
I did hear back from them.

  • What caused the iBook problem?

I'm writing this for my wife, as she's unable to use her iBook for more than a few minutes before it locks up.
I'm serving in the military overseas. My wife and I both use Apple products to chat, email, etc. When I spoke to her yesterday, she was frantic. Her iBook G4 apparently started making a strange noise and then stopped working altogether.
I asked her what she had tried, and she explained that she spent over an hour on the phone with Apple support (I knew AppleCare might come in handy). The first support person she spoke with was, for lack of a better term, an idiot. This was confirmed by the third support person she spoke with. I'll explain later.
The problem was that when she tapped her spacebar to wake up the computer, it didn't wake up completely. She got a grey screen, Apple logo, and that was it. I told her to be patient, that maybe it was reseting after an update (that was before I knew about the 10.4.6 update being available).
    Her computer auto-updates every Monday.
I had her turn off the computer by holding down the power button. I then had her disconnect the power cord and remove the battery. I did this on a hunch (just in case the computer had a heat problem). She reconnected the power cord, pressed the power button, and it was back up and running - for about 5 minutes.
Then the computer began making a not-so-funny noise again, and the spinning-beach-ball-of-death reared it's ugly head and wouldn't go away.
The first support person had her use the install/boot disk that came with the computer. That was Panther. We're using Tiger. Bad idea.
When the boot/install disk did not appear to be working, the first support person had her abort, and she was prompted with little phrases like "are you sure you want to quit, doing so now may damage your files" or something like that.
He just had her keep clicking "OK" and eventually got tired of talking to her and told her the hard drive was bad and that she was SOL.
The second support person was apparently too busy to troubleshoot any further and cut directly to "sorry, you're SOL".
The third support person was a little more helpful in that he talked her through connecting the iBook to her G5 PowerPC iMac to attempt pulling the files over to the iMac (she had already resigned herself to the fact that the iBook hard drive was on it's last leg).
She had asked the first support person about doing this and he said that if the files were corrupt on the iBook, they might corrupt the iMac, and that it was a bad idea. Not a very bright guy, considering the files would be copied to a folder, and wouldn't overwrite the iMac's system files.
She started to transfer files and the iBook froze again. She repeated the steps I had her do earlier, managed to get a CD in the the drive, copied a few folder successfully to the CD, checked the CD to see if the files were there (success!) but then the iBook died before she could get the CD out. She's working on holding down the track pad button while rebooting to see if it'll spit out the CD as I type this.
So, in addition to wanting to know how to resolve the problem, I'd like to know what caused it.
What caused so many people to have alleged hard-drive problems within a day or two of each other?
    Is this Apple's first virus?
Is this the work of a disgruntled Apple employee working in the updates department?
Is this an evil Apple plot to force us to by MacBook Pro's that won't run Virtual PC?
Will running the 10.4.6 hurt or help the situation?
Why is there such inconsistency in Apple support and aren't they supposed to log their trouble-shooting steps performed thus far?
My wife has been using Mac's for over 9 years. I've only been using them for 2 years. Up until now, I've had a lot of confidence in Apple to be a solid platform, even if not the fastest platform. This experience is not inspiring me to purchase another Apple computer.

    Hi Robk64,
You might want to look at...

Knowledge Base Document #106941 on Mac OS X: How to back up and restore your files

    SOL?
Her files probably won't fit on a CD; unless she has less then 700Mb.
    1."Is this Apple's first virus?"
    Negative
    2. "Is this the work of a disgruntled Apple employee working in the updates department?"
No, I don't think so. Apple tries these out to try and avoid problems with their updates. Things happen that are not expected. They wouldn't put anything out unless they thought it was ready.
    3. "Is this an evil Apple plot to force us to by MacBook Pro's that won't run Virtual PC?"
First off, look at #1 and think about what platform is notorious for virus problems (Mac has had not had any virus out breaks so far). There have been some "malware/macro" software that was meant to mess with Apple Computers. The most recent that was was over exaggerated was nothing special; MacWorld worked pretty hard to get it to effect their machine. As long as you know what you are downloading and where you are getting it from, you should have no problem.
If you want VPC to work on a MacBook Pro; don't look to Apple. You should talk to Microsoft's Mac Department because Apple announced the Universal Binary switch a long time ago (with developer help) so that software companies could make the switch easier. If anyone is to blame; its Microsoft [they are busy working out their problems with Vista; I am guessing it will be awhile before you see VPC for MBP;) ]
"Will running the 10.4.6 hurt or help the situation?"
My opinion would to just reinstall Mac OS X after backing up the hard drive. That would probably fix your problem. Once OS X is installed; update the software.
"Why is there such inconsistency in Apple support and aren't they supposed to log their trouble-shooting steps performed thus far"
Once in a while Apple's personnel may make human errors. The second one you talked to may have seen her work-up and just reiterated what was said. They have resources we don't, but they can't really go beyond them because they can't see the product, and they are just call support. You may have to send it in.
So in 9 years, you have had this one problem. We can't really tell you what is wrong with the computer because we can't see it ourselves; we can only give suggestions/ideas. Tell them her story, explaining her situation (military etc) and then see if they can help. She may want to bring it into her local Apple Store/Reseller. She can make a reservation on the website or at the store. She can get better feedback in person.
    Just some of my thoughts,

  • Time Machine and New Macbook, old iBook problem.

Hi there. I was using a G4 iBook until about 1 month ago. I had been backing it up with time machine. I then bought a new computer. Upon start up, I used time machine to move my applications and files over to the new Macbook. Everything has been dandy with the new Macbook.
Today I tried to back up the Macbook using time machine but it appeared to freeze about halfway through. I investigated the boards for advice. Since my iBook was a Power PC and the new Macbook is an Intel computer, I understand that I needed to reformat the external hard drive. Okay, I did that. I then tried to run a backup but it again froze, after only 60 MBs of 37 GBs. When I try opening the external hard drive I notice that it still refers to my computer as my iBook rather than the Macbook. Does this explain the problem and if so, how can I rename my computer to reflect the change? I don't get it.

To the extent that Time Machine uses a computer's "name" in naming its backup files, that could be the explanation.
Have you renamed your MacBook to see if that helps?

  • IBooks problem with Life On Earth

Having a problem with IBooks.  All the books I have downloaded work except for LIfe on Earth - the free download from Apple.  The error message is "It is formatted incorrectly or is not in a format that IBooks can open"  What to do?  Have deleted and reinstalled numerous times with same error.  Other books not affected.  (says Ibook 2 is downloaded but doesnt say installed.  Again, what to do?

My iPad 1 would open the 'Life on Earth' book and start playing the audio, but no display, just the grey background.
Tried 'killing' the app and even removing and re-adding, but no success. I then turned to portrait mode and everything appeared. It was then OK when re-opening, even in landscape mode. Maybe that's the way to do it(?)
(BTW, I only have 1.8 GB of free space)

  • Multiple ibook problems

    Hello everyone.
ibook G3 800mhz out of apple care warranty. Guess what? It seems that everything that could possibly go wrong has.
Yes, we've been through the display replacement, but that was years ago now.
My battery is no longer holding a charge, which is to be expected I guess.
My apple power supply has failed. Trying to save some money, I purchased the macally power supply, which seems to be interfering with my mouse pad.
I upgraded my RAM to 640MB, or so I thought... sometimes the DIMM1/J12 shows the new module, but it usually doesn't. Yep, 128MB RAM.
I've also been getting the grey screen telling me to restart a lot lately.
    Oh, Safari? Useless. Crashes everytime.
I'm running 10.2.8. I would love to upgrade, but I'm not sure there is a point at this stage. Actually, I need to upgrade in order to introduce my Presonus Firebox to my ibook. Apparently, 10.3.7 will recognize the device, however, 10.2.8 will not. I feel like this ibook is practically useless after four years.
My iMac graphite runs like a dream. A slow dream, but a dream nonetheless. It wasn't without issue either, though about three years into its life.
As you can tell, I am getting frustrated with Apple. Any suggestions? I am on a budget, so anything short of "go buy a new computer" will be appreciated.

An upgrade to at least Panther would probably be good for your iBook, but with your RAM issue I don't think you'd be able to install it.
Going for a Macally charger isn't a bad thing, it's what you had to do - it'll work just the same, also a new battery might help out a bit.
If you can't do either, try a reinstall of Jaguar and see if that fixes a few of your problems.

  • Keynote action "Move" in iBook problem or limitation?

    Hi,
I have ran into a problem with getting a Keynote animation to play correctly in iBook.
The Keynote file contains a couple of "move" actions whereby an oject follows a particular path.
This is replicated three times on the same slide with similar objects following a different path.
These actions are sequential, not concurrent.
It works perfectly in Keynote, however when I drag the file into iBook Author and finally view on the iPad, only the first move works and the other move's don't.
Is this a problem or a limitation?  I find it odd that the first move works but the other three don't. All other builds work normally.
Many thanks in advance and kind regards,
    /D

I have replaced the four separate moves by one single, more complex move and this seems to work on the iPad now. It looks like there is a limitation to the number of move actions one can have on a single keynote slide in the iBook. Unless it is an undocumented feature of course  . Still I am interested to know if anyone else has come across this problem.
    Cheers,
    /D.

  • IPhoto11 and iBooks problem

I used iPhoto11 to make an album. Then saved it as a pdf file so that I could view it on my iPad.
I moved the pdf file to the Books folder in iTunes and then did a sync with my iPad. The album
is on the shelf but you can not open it ?
Any albums that I made with iPhoto versions prior to iPhoto11 work fine. When I do a Get Info
cmd on good file the Encoding software is: Mac OS X 10.6.5 Quartz PDFContext
on the one that does not open: Encoding Software: Mac OS X 10.7.2 Quartz PDFContext
Could this be a LION problem ? Help !!!

Doing very quickly, i succeeded in removing my last downloaded pdf before ibooks stops. The pb seems now to have disappeared.

  • Safari 4 Clamshell iBook Problems

I have a clamshell iBook (466 graphite) and was using Safari 4 beta and it was working fine. Downloaded the 4.0 release tonight (6/8/09) and all **** broke loose. I no longer have a visible google home page, no scroll bars (800x600 is the max setting for this computer) and my bookmarks bar shows up briefly when Safari opens (in black letters on a white background) then disappears. If I use the google search in the upper right corner I get results (in a higher screen resolution setting) but no way to scroll down or over. I was able to download Firefox, just barely, as the download dialog box was just visible on the right hand side of my screen. Seems strange that Apple would cue me to do this Safari download without checking how it would work on this old but still viable iBook.

Just a little update, I went and worked with a Genius today to try and resolve the Safari 4.0 problem. The gentleman thought that the problem we are having might have to do with our graphics card. He thought that there might be a way to try and let Safari work with our underpowered graphics card (and low resolution) but that it would (might) slow down a number of things. Since we are underpowered CPU wise, we did not try it.
The problem is that if we try and deinstall Safari 4.0, we need to insure that the Web Kit (Java?) is also removed otherwise we may have problems with Safari 3.0.
There is no easy way to go back. I am limited on HD space and need to get an external HD in order to do a reinstall and archive to get Safari 3.0 back which i believe has already been described here in the forum.
I went through this with Safari 3.0 initially when after downloading I and others had problems with Iwork and Mail, again another web kit or Java incompatibility.
Has anyone performed the Archive and reinstall back to Safari 3.0 with no problems?
    Thanx again.

  • IBooks problem after iOS8 download

My iBooks is not functioning correctly after iOS8 download. Keeps looping trying to download books, so cannot select to transfer to iCloud. Also while reading book shuts down & closes.

I have been having the iBooks crashing problem in iOS 8.x since I installed it on my iPad Air.  I tried bunches of different things but it would only work without crashing in Airplane mode.
Today I did a complete restore via iTunes and set it up as a new iPad.  I did not restore my backup to it.  I simply set it to sync all my books, music, apps and photos in iTunes and when it finished syncing iBooks is no longer crashing on me.
I don’t know if this will work for everyone/anyone else.  I’m also using Yosemite and iTunes 12, so that might also make a difference.

  • Is there a proper Clamshell iBook problem forum?

As usual, I have no idea what forum to post in, for none seem a good fit. Is there a proper forum for finding help for what may be a serious problem with a Clamshell iBook? I believe it's the computer and not a program. Am I at the right website, or should I be looking elsewhere for help?
This is my home computer (I'm at lunch break at work now) I don't have Internet at home, and don't know the the tech information right now. I'm just looking for the right place to ask advice before I get all the needed info and tell my long sad story.
Thanks for any help you can give on where I should be asking for help.

  • IBook Problem, Advice Wanted

My sister has a 1.5 year old iBook G4 we bought with an AppleCare warranty from the Apple Store at Easton last summer. Recently, her hard drive has had problems. We called the 1-800 number, and they sent us back to the store. At the store they diagnosed the problem as a bad hard drive, and told us it'd be 8 days to fix (and free - since it is under warranty). They asked my sister if she needed any files, and they opened her hard drive and helped her access her old files.
Today I get a call from the same Apple store telling me that her warranty is void, that the $300 repairs would now be $700 and that they can't get the data off her hard drive. They said she spilled something on it. She refutes this all.
I find it extremely suspicious that Apple suddenly "can't get the data" she had on her hard drive when they were able to do that on Saturday. Also, it seems very odd that the repairs have gone up about $400 overnight.
I've been an Apple user for six years now - and I've never had an ounce of trouble. I even made sure that when my parents bought my sister her computer for college that it was an Apple.
The problem is - I don't really believe Apple on this one. My mother, father, and sister's boyfriend were all with my sister when they opened the files on her hard drive. And my sister is in tears because I yelled at her for spilling something on her iBook that she swears she never did.
Have any of the rest of you had problems with Apple when you were using your AppleCare warranty?

    Eric,
I recommend heading back to the store with all the paperwork you have:
1.) the sheet indicating she didn't spill on the iBook
2.) proof that you have purchased AppleCare
3.) a receipt for the cost of repairs (if you have one)
Be polite, but forceful. You'll get results

  • Ibook problem

Sorry guys, back again, one problem after another. I think this one is the ibook rather than me though!
When I start up the ibook it goes through the usual thing, small apple and rotating counter, welcome pane loading apps etc, then the screen stays plain blue. If I hit the eject button the tray opens, I get a black square a little over an inch in size with the eject symbol, also the volume panel will show in there but the computer doesn't finish the start. However, if I hit the brightness key the screen opens as it were, the wllpaper appears as do the files etc, though my HD icon has gone from the desktop.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Gari

    Gari:
    Welcome back.
Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier) deals with a number of startup issues, including the blue screen. I suggest you try some of the suggestions listed, then post back and let me know how things went.

  • G4 14" ibook problems.

    Hi everyone,
I have just picked up a 14" ibook at a car boot sale here in the UK, model A 1055, thats all I can find on the underside of the computer.Where do I find the serial number.
I have no other information as to speed, memory or hard disc size.It has 1 firewire and 2 USB ports and a slot loading drive.
There was no power supply but the battery is showing 4 green lights.
When I switch it on it starts with a chime, then hard disc starts up and after a while I get a white screen that then goes to red, then green, then blue then white and then black. Some times the fan comes on.
    Any help would be welcome.
    Regards from England,
    Alan

    Hi,
Just an update. The Power supply arrived but did not work so I am waiting for a replacement.
I am sure the problem is with the video chip and bad solder joints as I managed to get it to boot part of the way by pressing to the left of the touch pad as mentioned in some other posts I read on this forum and HERE and HERE .
Any comments about various fixes if you have tried them would be most welcome.
    Regards,
    Alan
