IBook running slower

Hi all
Does anyone know of any free software which can boost performance and strip out any clutter which may have built up on the hard drive? I don't particularly have that much saved so it should be pretty fast considering i have maxed the RAM in it. Just wondering if there is a particularly large build up of temp files or, if adding and deleting trial progs could have left residual files which may affect the performance.
T.I.A

Currently i have loads of space. As i also have a PC i use this for 'general' family type stuff. The iBook is my use only and as such it is mostly for iPhoto and hopefully soon, iWeb etc.

  • ITunes 7- runs slow, makes ibook run slow

    hi,
ever since downloading itunes 7, i've been having a lot of issues with it and my ibook. my computer has been running insanely slow and itunes, if it decides to open at all, takes a few minutes to open. most of the time it just says "application not responding" and i have to force quit even though itunes never even opened. it's gotten to a point where my computer is pretty much unusable. can anyone help?
    thanks
    ibook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Try to download iTunes 7.0.1 via Software Update. If iTunes is still unstable, then the best way IS to re-install the previous version. Most people are doing that.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
What is the hard drive capacity, and how much space remains available on it? Things can slow down if the hard drive is getting full. It is generally recommended to keep at least 15% of the total capacity of the hard drive free as available space.
How long has it been since you performed any hard drive maintenance? (i.e., repaired the hard drive using Disk Utility from the Mac OS X 10.5 Install disc?)

  • Ibook runs extremely slow

Out of a clear blue sky my ibook runs very slow. It takes forever to open a file or any document and it dies on the black screen when I try to opena pdf. I used the OS disk to repair the HD but the message is "HD does not need repaired". I have about 17 GB left on the HD so there is lots of room.
Everything seems to function correctly except for the slowness. My ibook is 55 months old and this is the first time I have had any trouble.
I am using Broadband. Any suggestions on what to try next? I could take it into a Apple store, but I hate to do that.
Thank you for any help you could give me.

    Victor:
The problem is when I am in safe boot, my airport is disabled (or not turned on & I can't turn it on) and I can't get into Safari or mail to determine if they are slow in safe boot
Yes. Airport does not load during Safe Boot. I wanted you to check how the computer responds with other apps, which, it seems, is fine.
Richard may be right about the Airport Extreme card. It is easily accessible, so no problem to go in and remove it, then reseat it securely. However, in my experience the Airport card will either work or not work at all, rather than being slow. In other words, if it is not properly seated you will not get a signal from your airport base or you may get a kernel panic. Go ahead and check it anyway and let us know if it makes a difference. If it works, great. If not we will need to trouble shoot your account.

  • Ibook running pretty slow....

I have an ibook G4 w/ the super drive. Lately it has been running slower then it used too. I have been through absolutely every thing on how to speed it up from repairing permissions to running the cd that came w/ my ibook to check for hard drive errors. I have been through every forum that I can find on this website and google about tips and tricks on how to speed it up all with no help.
I guess the only option is to get it upgraded. I currently have 512mb of memory will upgrading it to 1 gb help any??? I see the beach ball quite a bit. Help please.

This is kind of a late response but I see the question is still open. My wife's G4 ibook 1 Ghz 256 RAM with OS 10.3.9 was so slow in web browsing that she needed an upgrade. I installed 1GB additional RAM and she could find no improvement so she bought a new MacBook Pro, which she loves. Meanwhile, we took the iBook on plane trips and the hard drive finally died. I replaced the drive with a PATA 5400 120 GB 8MB cache drive from FRYS.com for $77 and it now runs three times faster on web pages than it did before. It may even be as fast as the Pro, I can't really tell, but it is fast. How much the RAM helped, I can't say except that without the drive replacement it was nil.

  • Running slow and locking up, additional tests for hd, memory?

My iBook has slowed to a crawl recently, and I suspect hardware problems, maybe the hard drive or memory. I've tried all hte usual things (disk repair, fix permissions, reinstalling the last update, running in safe mode) but the computer runs slow and at times just stops -- earlier today it stopped responding or refreshing anythign but the spining ball for >20 min, at which point I did a hard reboot, and it took it almost another 20 minutes to reboot. I've run the hardware tests from the utility disk a few times but nothing shows up. The only thing of note in the system log is that lookupd seems to die and restart pretty often, and around when it locked up earier today there are lots of messages about "IOATAController device blocking bus."

It took it more than 10 minutes to boot and for me to log in this time, and a few more minutes to display the contents of the hard drive, but when I finally got Disk Utility up, it still said SMART Status: verified. However I hit the "verify disk" button, and the computer has been locked up for about 10 minutes now with nothing more than 'Verifying volume "Macintosh HD"' in the status window and nothing but the spinning beach ball when I try to do anything else. I'll let it go and see if it ever recovers.
I have a recent bootable clone, but even small file writes can take an hour now, so I can't imagine a complete copy ever finishing. After more research on the message "IOATAController device blocking bus" I find that a few people who get that are able to recover by using disk utility from the install disk and doing a disk repair, but most end up with their hard drive needing to be replaced. I've done the first a few times now with no improvement, so I'm guessing I'm headed for the second. The local Apple Store had no more appointments available today but I'm going to try and get in tomorrow.

  • IBook app slow for anyone else too?

I have noticed when i try to use my ibook app its running slow. This is happening on my iphone 4, and old 3GS. Its especially noticeable when you flip books to horizontal to read, it takes it a good few seconds to flip over.
i know seconds is not a big deal, but in any other app when i turn the phone it immediately flips over the screen. And i remember when i first got the ibook app it wasn't like this. more recent thing, and happening on both phones. so i don't is this a software bug?
    anyone else with this issue?

One odd thing that I noticed is that when I FIRST open my Pooh book (the free one), it gives me an error, telling me that the required resources aren't there, and doesn't open. Then I can open it again, IMMEDIATELY, and it opens just fine. I deleted the book the first time (because it would never open, and would always give me that error), and now it opens, but only on the second time...
    Anyone else having this error?

  • IBook seems slow

    Hi
I've a couple of questions... please bear with me!
I have an iBook (G3 500mhz running OSX 10.3) which seems to be running slow for some reason. I haven't been using it much recently as I work on my iMac most of the time, but as we enter the wi-fi, compute-on-the-move age, I thought I'd upgrade it so I could at least pick up email when I'm not at home.
Two things... Is it worth me maxing out the RAM and installing 512mb in the user slot (there's 128mb in there at present...) and possibly investing in a new battery (I'm getting 20- 40 mins tops use out of it now) and, most importantly, trying to track down an Airport card that is compatible? Is this machine capable of the necessary interface with modern wi-fi technology or is it bordering on the neolithic?
Secondly, when I use 'Software Update' it takes AGES when it reaches the 'optimising' stage. I updated two things last night, Quicktime and a Security update and it took around 90 minutes to go through it. Is this a RAM issue or is there something else I should be checking out?
I've still got the OS9 option on it (which I never use) - can I dump it and open up some disc space or isn't this possible.
    That's three questions - sorry!

Hi jazzeroo, welcome to Apple Discussions!
    To answer your three questions:
1 "Is it worth me maxing out the RAM and installing 512mb in the user slot"
Extra RAM will certainly speed things up, and these days is a fairly inexpensive option.
2 "and possibly investing in a new battery"
Sure, given the limited life left in the old one.
3 "Is it worth me ... trying to track down an Airport card that is compatible"
Your call. Depends how much money you want to throw at the machine.
4 "Is this machine capable of the necessary interface with modern wi-fi technology or is it bordering on the neolithic?"
To be frank, it's a little out of date and you may be better off putting your money towards something more bronze-age.
5 "...Quicktime and a Security update ... took around 90 minutes to go through it. Is this a RAM issue or is there something else I should be checking out?"
Assuming you've got broadband, yes, that's pretty slow. It's not likely to be solely a RAM issue. How much hard drive space do you have left? Click once on the HD icon and then press Command - I (or choose File>Get Info. If you've got less than about 3 to 5 gig spare, that could be one possible cause of overall slowdown.
If your hard drive is low on available space, post back for further instructions on how to free up space + system maintenance tips.
6 "I've still got the OS9 option on it (which I never use) - can I dump it and open up some disc space or isn't this possible"
You could dump it, although the OS 9 option may one day be invaluable for trouble-shooting, along with resolving security and other issues. Best to keep it.
    Sorry - that's six answers!
Edit: Sorry, Ronda. It's taken me 10 minutes to compose this reply!

  • Computer runs slow after installation

    Hi,
A little over a month ago I installed Tiger (using CDs) onto my iBook 10.1.5 OSX, 256MB, Power PC G3. A couple of times the computer ran slow at the start up but I would just re-start the computer and then it ran fine. This morning I turned it on I can't get it to stop running slow. Start up takes forever and any application I open takes a long time to start and runs slow after. What can I do to fix this?
    Thank you,
    Melissa

You have adequate free hard drive space but keep an eye on it.
But I do use quite a bit of memory on my itunes, about 5GB.
    How did you determine this?
If you read the link I provided carefully, OS X makes automatic/dynamic use of Paging or Virtual Memory regardless the amount of RAM installed which uses available free hard drive space when utilized. This is released when logging out of your account and after a shutdown and/or a restart.
The less RAM you have installed, the more Paging or Virtual Memory will be used depending on the number of running applications at a time and what each application is performing. This can make the system feel and operate more slowly.
Check Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption for system troubleshooting procedures and when doing so, follow all steps/instructions in the order provided.

  • IBook G4 slowed SIGNIFICANTLY & FREEZES with OSX 10.4.8 and then 10.4.9 too

    Hi,
My iBook G4 slowed SIGNIFICANTLY after installing OSX 10.4.8 and then 10.4.9 and freezes often too!!!
I mean, it takes a few minuets to boot-up sometimes.... I hate that spinning wheel!
It ran great before the two up-dates, and I have done all the "verify and repair" that can possibly be done with and without the original installation DVD, including disk repair.
I had no other programs running at the installation, nor were there USB or Firewire attached. But I was plugged into the local network (how else was I supposed to download the upgrade).
Basically, can I revert to 10.4.7???
Or, is there a simple solution?

    Hi Thanks for the help,
S.M.A.R.T. Status: Verified, is appearing just like
    that.
OK, that's a good sign, though it doesn't necessarily mean that everything is okay with the drive, just that nothing is currently far enough out of spec to get flagged.
I looked in the console (I dont even know what it is)
and the only things I could find that looked dodgey
were lines such as those below...
Apr 12 10:19:11 localhost launchd: Server 3d2b in
    bootstrap 1103 uid 0: "/usr/sbin/lookupd"[41]: exited
    abnormally: Hangup
    Apr 12 10:19:18 james-rk-modzelewskis-ibook-g4
launchd: Server 0 in bootstrap 1103 uid 0:
    "/usr/sbin/lookupd"[55]: exited abnormally: Hangup
    Apr 18 11:14:20 james-rk-modzelewskis-ibook-g4
launchd: Server 0 in bootstrap 1103 uid 0:
    "/usr/sbin/lookupd"[55]: exited abnormally: Hangup
These occur a few dozen times throughout the system
log. Does it mean anything to you???
Those are harmless, I think. I've seen them on my laptop, I think around when I switch the network from ethernet to AirPort or vice versa. And maybe when I put the computer to sleep, too.
One thing you should try to do is see if you can figure out a pattern to the stalls and freezes. Do they only happen when you're on the Internet? Maybe just with one particular web site or page? Also, try running Activity Monitor and keep an eye on it to see if you can catch the name of a process that's taking too much processor time.
How much RAM does your computer have, and how much free space on your hard drive? That can make a difference, too. You should have a few GB (I like to keep at least 8GB free on my PowerBook) of free hard drive space. 512 MB of RAM is pretty much the minimum for Tiger, I think. Less than that and you'll find the computer will be using swap space on the hard drive quite a bit if you try to do anything but the bare minimum of simple web pages and email.

  • IBook G4 "slowed" SIGNIFICANTLY afte installing OSX 10.4.8 and then 10.4.9

    Hi,
My iBook G4 slowed SIGNIFICANTLY after installing OSX 10.4.8 and then 10.4.9 and freezes often too!!!
I mean, it takes a few minuets to boot-up sometimes.... I hate that spinning wheel!
It ran great before the two up-dates, and I have done all the "verify and repair" that can possibly be done with and without the original installation DVD.
Basically, can I revert to 10.4.7???
Or, is there a simple solution?

First let's take a step back and have a look at your upgrade procedures. Here is one suggestion of how to proceed:
Mac OS X 10.4.9: Update procedure recommendation
First, make a full backup of your current Mac OS X installation -- preferably a clone ( try SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner). If something goes wrong, or you experience a major incompatibility after updating, the backup will prove invaluable.
Next, if you are the cautious type, run a disk repair on the volume targeted for installation. You can use an n alternative startup drive or your Mac OS X installation disc. If you are starting up from your Mac OS X install disc, put the disc in your optical drive and restart holding down the "C" key. After your system starts up and you've selected your language, go to the "Utilties" menu and select "Disk Utility." Use the "Repair Disk" function. After disk repairs are complete, restart from your normal startup drive and continue.
Avoid performing any other operations (in Mac OS X or third-party applications) while the update process is occurring. Performing other tasks during the update process potentiates various issues, including problems with prebinding (which is happening during the "Optimizing the system" phase of the update process) and others that can occur when files are being replaced by the update are also being read/written by the currently logged in user. You should not only refrain from launching applications or working with files during the update process, but also from putting the system to sleep, disconnecting/connecting devices, and other potentially interruptive actions.
In addition, before installing the update, make sure all Apple-installed applications and utilities are in their original locations. Moving one of these applications to a different location on your hard drive can lead to an incomplete update. Also, disconnect any FireWire/USB devices before applying Mac OS X 10.4.9 (except for your startup drive, if it is FireWire or USB, and your keyboard/mouse), then re-connect the devices one by one (checking for issues created by any particular device) after the update process is complete and the system has restarted. Also, note that the first restart after applying Mac OS X 10.4.9 may be abnormally long. Subsequent restarts should take place at normal speed.

Adobe CC applications are very large and the base Mac mini isn't a good choice because it has only 4GB of RAM and has a slow standard hard drive. To get the most out of ACC you should upgrade the mini to at least 8GB. I'd also choose an SSD or Fusion drive for better performance.
