IBook screen versus Powerbook

I own a powerbook 1ghz 12" and I'm looking to replace the screen. Do the powerbook and iBook share a screen? Can I pick one up off of one of those?

I've been looking around for a good price and I'm not completely impressed with what I have found. Especially when you can find a 95% complete powerbook for oh twice the price as just the lcd screen The installation wont be a problem since I've completely taken apart the computer.

  • Need to shut off ibook screen?

    Hi all,
I need to know how to set my 12" G4 ibook screen to turn off while it is connected to an external monitor? I also have a 15" G4 powerbook that is connected to a different external display and I can turn it on and it uses the external monitor with the lid closed and screen off. I want to be able to do this with my ibook. It is a waste to have the ibook screen on all the time when it has an external monitor as a display. Oh, and it still has 10.3.9 on it. I'll put 10.4 on it eventually. I have 10.4 on my powerbook.

I need to know how to set my 12" G4 ibook screen to turn off while it is connected to an external monitor?
Sorry, but that is not possible with an iBook.
That is a feature of PowerBooks.

  • IBook G4 or Powerbook

I'm wanting to purchase an apple laptop and I'm desperate for some advice. Should i get an ibook or a powerbook.
    Any advice is welcome.
    Kate

The iBook is a poweul machine for the price. It's hard to beat. If you are a casual user playing internet games, surfing, word processing, the occasional imovie, itunes, iphoto, then get an ibook. If you are a heavy user using graphics apps, Final cut express/pro (imovie's big brothers), photoshop, along with the above mentioned - get a powerbook.
    Current differences -
    Powerbook
-A little faster processor (hard to tell the difference)
-64mb video card - good for graphics heavy games, graphics, movies
-widescreen format (on 15" and 17")
    -metal outer casing
    iBook
    -32mb video card
    -normal screen
-plastic casing (similar to the iPod)
Other than that not much different. The difference is the user. the Power-series is mostly designed for the pro user. The i-series (iPod, iBook, iLife) are comsumer user products.

  • Ibook screen cracked

My husband's ibook screen cracked, we bought a VGA cable but cannot get into the system to have it recognize the new display. I have been able to bring up the system on my G4 tower by using a Firewire cable so I can see the system, I just don't know how to manipulate it. Anyone have any ideas?

I had my son repair the iBook by installing a new screen. It is running beautifully.

  • Ibook screen cracking

My ibook screen is starting to crack on the left had side, not the LCD it;s self but the plastic part. I have taken excellent care of it never droped it and its ALWAYS in it's case when not in use. It's still under warranty should I bring it to an Apple store for a look at. Do you think they will cover it?

Bring it back ASAP, don't even wonder. I once had a problem waited a little bit before calling apple, and apple buged me quite a bit before repairing my ibook!
hope they'll be nice to you,
    regards

  • Ibook Screen Death with a twist?

My Ibook screen is doing the typical fickering and eventually goes out after 1 minute, but when I had it hooked up to my big Mac via firewire it seems as if the whole system dosen't respond (it will mount when I can see the screen but when the screen goes out so does everything else) . I know that the screen is one thing but why would it affect the computer thru firewire (can't drag out data/ can't unmount disk etc)? What are the parts do I need and do I have to have good soldering skills (mine suck)? P.S. I can drag a couple of things out to my G4 before the screen and system becomes unresponsive.

It sounds like you may be having logic board problems. Enough dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from this problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Check out the FAQ page and if the symptoms look familiar, give Apple a call. If your iBook qualifies, it's a free fix.
If you are past the three-year time limit, ask to speak to Customer Relations and ask them to please make an exception to the three-year limit in your case.
You may be able to get the iBook to remain responsive in FireWire Target Disk Mode so you can retrieve your data by this method:
If the iBook is on, shut it down and wait 30 seconds (or longer). Pick it up in your left palm to the left of the trackpad and squeeze the case there between your palm and left thumb as you push the power button and key combination to start up in FireWire Target Disk Mode. Do not let up the pressure on the case. Continue applying this pressure as you save your data to the other Mac. If you let up and the iBook dies or freezes, you will have to start over, allowing it to rest several hours or overnight before beginning again.
Let us know how things go.

  • Broken ibook screen

do apple offer a repair service for broken ibook screens or is it necessary to buy another ibook entirely?? any info would be greatly appreciated.

They will replace the screen, but it will cost you a
    few hundred dollars.
Do you know how long this service takes? a few months? im in ireland and trying to contact our apple store and its very difficult to pin anyone down.

  • Clean iBook screen

First I will rant and rave and then we'll get to the real issue. If any Apple employees see this, please provide feedback to the powers that be about the support area of the web site. I have used Apple support since the days of the TIL and now it is impossible. When I type a search query, the result is absurd. On the general support page (www.apple.com/support) and even on this discussions page, when I type "clean TFT screen" the result is in categories not related to support, such as
EDUCATION: School of Theater, Film and Television (TFT) at UCLA
quote from an associate professor: “I knew Final Cut Pro would be smart, it would be CLEAN, and ..."
all with full-SCREEN, full-motion digital video
and a press release from July 2000 that mentions Apple Studio Display.
Yep, that's it; no support result at all.
I made my search less exact with "clean ibook screen" and got:
two results in products: both for games
one result in markets for cerebral lounge
I should not be here asking this forum how to clean an iBook screen but the search process is broken. If you know a way that I can change my methods for searching to get the correct results, fine, tell me. But please don't fail to give feedback to Apple, especially sine the feedback link that should be at the bottom of the support page is not there. I hope this isn't what we should expect as the Mac platform lets Windows creep in; more support style along the lines of Microsoft!
Now for my simple question. How should I clean my iBook G4 active matrix TFT screen?

It is possible to add your own web pages to the Help database. As with all things hackish, you should work on a copy in case it gets out of whack.
Go to Library > Documentation > Help > Machelp.help and control-click to show package contents. Got to Contents > English.lproj and you will find lots of web pages. After you make a new page, you'll need to add keyword matches to the ExactMatch.plist as well as meta tags to the HTML source of the page. It's not an easy method so unless you want to add Help topics for an organization, forget it.
When I did support for Dell, I found their support documents a bit meager and those from Microsoft very archanely searchable so I made web pages for all my notes and bookmarked them in Netscape. Many other technicians at Dell asked for copies to add to their Netscape (IE was lame in this respect).

  • Help! Why is my 12" White iBook screen Black?

    Help!
When I turned on my iBook, the White apple appeared center screen, then the screen became whitish gray. Thinking the operating system was lost, I erroneously tried a Pismo trick. I turned it off, then rebooted while holding down the X key.
It has been completely black ever since. Resetting the PMU while pressing "ctrl, option, shift, power" has had no effect. Is there something I can push to get the whitish gray screen back? I'd be happy just to see the apple appear center screen again.
Maybe someone knows where to purchase backlights and where on the internet to find installation instructions. If anyone can tell me how to hook the up to my iMac G3 DV, or my PowerBook G3 Pismo, then I can test to see if it is a monitor problem, software problem, hardware problem, or I shouldn't have held down the "X" key problem.
Thanks in advance for any help at all,
A Little Fish in a BigMac Pond

    Hi Philip,
You were correct! It was the logic board. It turns out that my iBook was a G3 (not a G4) that qualified for the repair program. Even though I missed the cutoff deadline by one week, they fixed it anyway.
Apple sent me a box via DHL on a Friday morning. DHL picked the box back up that same Friday evening and FedEx had the Computer back in my hand and working by Monday morning.
Wow! Talk about your class act. Now I see why it is that once you go Mac you can't go back! I am through with PC's forever!

  • Which to choose - iBook G4 or Powerbook G4

I have a Powerbook G4 (15", three years old, 550MHz processor) and I have always been delighted with it - and still am.
Time to upgrade however I thought about the iBook as the only problem with the current model (apart from CPU power) is the edges of the lower half of the case are scratched to h*ll over the long hours of use, and the front area next to the magnetic catch is bald.
So other than the extra hard disc space, and a slightly better resolution screen, what extra do I get from a Powerbook ?
Is the Powerbook worth the extra money - anyone got both and care to offer advice?
    Thanks

    Hi Graham Outterside,
By searching Apple Discussions you can find tons of threads that are similar to yours. Here is one of the most recent. I can't tell you which to buy, but I might be able to advise you. There's not much to say besides the difference "specs" from the information you have given us. But if you give us some insight on what you are going to use the computer for we and maybe some programs your interested in, that would help. If you still would like a break down of the specs I can list them off (with the dis/advantages). Heres a previous post with some of the "specs".

  • Ibook battery or powerbook battery?

I am still struggling(ibook or powerbook)and was wondering how the 12 inch powerbooks battery holds up in real world conditions. How many hours of dvd can you watch? Are there settings you can change or different batteries to buy?

Well personaly I would go with the PowerBook they're much faster and the 12 inch is really portable. I have a 12 inch PowerBook and when I have the screen brightness to the lowest setting before the back light goes off and the volume off along with the bluetooth I get about 5:15 min. which is fine for me when I'm on a road trip with my laptop I turn bluetooth and airpot off and turn the screen a little bit up and the volume up I get just a little bit less then 5 hours. There are settings you can set that can make it longer too. Thanks hope this has helped

  • White blotches on iBook screen

I have a frustrating problem with my iBook and I was hoping you might be able to give me some general advice.
I first noticed a few months ago that some faint, cloudy blotches were appearing in the center of the computer’s screen. There are two now, one quite noticeable and the other slightly more faint. Because my warranty ends in February, I took the iBook to a Genius Bar, and the representative there confirmed that my warranty was in effect and sent the computer to Apple for maintenance. After waiting more than two weeks, I finally received a call from Apple, asking me if their “quote” of $775 for repairs was acceptable—if not, they would ship the iBook back to me immediately. When I asserted that the warranty should cover the repairs, I was informed that they had chalked the problem up to “accidental damage”, thus excluding it from the warranty.
I was shocked. After all, my iBook problem seems identical to the issue that plagued the screens of certain Powerbooks, which Apple replaced without charge. (see www.apple.com/support/powerbook/displayprogram).
I have tried the "rubbing" remedy suggested in a reply to a December 17 post on this forum, but to no avail. My questions are: Is there a more effective way to address this problem with Apple? (I realize this might be outside the purview of this forum) and, if I can’t convince them, what would be the most inexpensive way fix the screen?
Thank you for any help you can provide!

Hey BC and welcome to Apple Discussions,
from Apple, asking me if their “quote” of $775 for repairs was acceptable
That seems outrageous but then the screen is around $300 and Apple has a flaat rate of $3xx.
“accidental damage”, thus excluding it from the warranty.
Yes,never seen that on an iBook. I have it here on the one I'm on but that was sent to me from the west coast in an unprotected box.
seems identical to the issue that plagued the screens of certain Powerbooks, which Apple replaced without charge.
That looks clearly to be an issue of connectors putting pressure on the display. You can see that in the pattern.
Apple is a corporate entity. I've repaired client's equipment that was on recall but I had to do the research myself and point them to the website.
if I can’t convince them, what would be the most inexpensive way fix the screen?
Buy a used screen and have someone replace it or do it yourself.
    Are you near Chicago?

  • Strange distorted colours on my ibook screen, blacks turn to reds, help!

    Hello!
I am posting my display problem here so that i don't have to spend unnecessary money on it. So the problem began 3 days ago when i started my ibook, the apple logo that usually is the center of a blue screen, was a bit grey with some red highlights and the blue ceased to be blue to turn to purple... when it boots it shows a lot of red shades all in a distroted form, the black colour no longer exists and was turned into red, i also have a pattern of red diagonal lines all over the display... what can this be? i still haven't done anything, what do you recommend me to do?
    Thank you very much!

Sounds like it's probably a defect in the video controller.
Are you still under warranty? If so, get it in for repair.
If not, check to see if you qualify for a free repair under this program:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/
If so, take it in for inspection, and request service under this program.
I believe that this extension only covers G3 iBooks. So, if you have a G4, you're probably going to have to rely on warranty coverage.
If you are not covered under warranty or the extension program, then you'll probably be looking at paying for a new logic board unless they can find a simple problem.
But, it sounds like it's the video controller to me. This is integrated in the main logic board. So, it's going to require replacing the entire logic board.
The question is: Can you get it done free or will you have to pay for it.
Check to see if you qualify for the free repair.
    I hope this helps.
