Ibook shutdowns itself.

Dear all.
I need some help in trying to figure out why my ibook is shutting itself down intermittently. There is totally a non- recoverable event. It shutdowns itself any time . What guesses i can make are as follows...please let me know which one it cud possibly be
a) There might be a conflicting update somewhere ...( least likely but i am guessing so coz i belive the problem became more common since i updated the machine with daylight settings..
b) my logic board cud be faulty...
c) there is some heating in the system that's not handled..properly..and when i say not handled properly i mean there might be some part that's getting heated more than usual and this is making machine shutdown ..( might be beyond machine's operating temperature..)
To add to this the machine was showing a very hazy display during some initial days which were very difficult to see..( but if you pay attention very closely you can actually tell what applications are running ..) But this was about 1 month back...Now the machine is shutting it self down..
Has any one seen the cuase and solution or faced similar problem and got it okay by apple ..? Please help me with solution. I would appreciate your suggestions but please no-non serious suggestions..( like have you restarted your machine..kind a...)
Thanks in advance for your time and knowledge.
Best
Anshul

Regarding the battery, the iBook should run just fine with the power adaptor alone. I had one of the recalled batteries and had to send it in. For some weeks I ran off of the power adaptor alone with no issues. Of course, with no battery, I lost the date and time every time I shut off the power because the main battery is what keeps the date and time. There is no other battery to run the clock.
You say that your battery died, but it sounds like it is still in place. Just to eliminate all possibility of the battery having anything to do with your problem, remove it physically and run off of the power adaptor with the battery out and see if your problem persists. Tape some plastic or something over the battery bay to keep it clean while you do this.
Concerning the display, do you have an external display you can borrow--maybe a friend with a desktop computer? It would be helpful to know if your display problems also exist on an external display or only on your built in display. If the external display looks good, then there is likely a problem affecting your built in display. If the external is also bad, it might indicate a problem with the connection of the video chip to the logic board, since you said the video chip passed the Apple Hardware Test.
It sounds like temperature may be a factor here. If your iBook has been off for a while, like overnight, will it work pretty well for a while? Then, as it warms up, will it start to malfunction? If so, you may have a failure of the ball grid array which holds your chips to the board. I experienced this sort of thing with my iBook, but it mostly got very slow and froze. It didn't shut down like yours does. But the underlying cause could be similar.
If you do have a failure of the ball grid array, the only way to repair it would be to have the board reballed. You can often get it to work for a while longer by making and installing some home made shims. A test would be to squeeze the lower left corner of the iBook and see if there is any improvement. If so, it would indicate that this is the problem and you could consider trying some shims, which at least won't cost you anything but some time.
If it does turn out to be a logic board problem such as I have described, it would likely be prohibitively expensive to get Apple to do the repair, as they would likely replace the logic board. I have heard of that costing nearly as much as a new MacBook. It just would not be worth it.
And just to be sure that software is not the problem, have you tried reinstalling the OS? It doesn't really sound like software, but that's something Apple had me do just to be sure the problem wasn't software related.
I'm hoping that some of the more experienced and knowledgeable members of the forum will know what is going on here and comment. From my own rather limited experience, I would suspect hardware problems having to do with the logic board, but I could be mistaken.
Good luck!

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.  If the issue persists, take the device to Apple for evaluation.

    Hi Arjun sache,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you're seeing an issue with iTunes shutting down unexpectedly when your iPhone is connected to the Mac. Take a look at the article below, it provides a lot of great troubleshooting tips that may be able to resolve the issue for you.

  • IBook puts itself to sleep and/or shuts down

My gf's iBook G4 (14-inch Early 2004) puts itself to sleep at random. No amount of pressing keys will wake it up, only pressing and holding the power button to shut it off completely, then rebooting, will get it back. Sometimes it shuts itself off completely at random. When starting it back up, it often refuses to boot all the way: will start to display the grey screen, then turn itself off. Resetting the PMU seemed to help for about an hour, then the same problems started again and now I can't get it to boot up at all. It won't even boot up into target disk mode so I can rescue her data with my Powerbook, nor will it boot from CD! Resetting the PRAM had no effect. She's understandably quite upset and thinking of getting a new computer. Is there any less expensive fix for this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.
    [edit]
By the way, I've read the other threads here describing similar difficulties, but I doubt the problem is the GPU needing to be reballed. The machine won't start up at all, rather than being started but having a black screen.
[Additional info:] I had noticed during it's last successful boot that the battery was dead in spite of the power cord having been plugged in to a working socket for days (and yes I'm sure the socket works). I've also tried with the power cord for my Powerbook with no success, and verified that her power cord works by plugging it into my Powerbook. This is what lead me to try resetting the PMU, but as I said that didn't work. Could it be that the PMU itself needs out-right replacing? If that's possible, is it possible to do so without replacing the entire logic board?

    Joel,
I don't think leaving it on all the time was much of a factor other than wearing the battery down faster which, according to Apple, has a approximately a 1-2 year life. Mine went before the 2 years was up and it's $129 to replace it.
Using it with the battery while it's plugged in without air circulation or a laptop cooler might be some extra wear and tear. Mine runs the hottest during that time, but if I unplug it and just use the battery, it cools way down. I'm interested in which iBook your GF has because a friend out of town has been reporting the same problem and I figured she didn't know it was sleeping. Hers is a 14" 1.0ghz I believe.
The case is supposed to be really strong, made out of bullet proof material, so the Apple sales rep told me, and it can survive an accidental minimal drop, unlike the PBs. I haven't tested that, but another friend dropped her 12" the other day, while it was open, and it looks like it just loosened the video cable. I haven't opened it yet to find out.
Is there any chance that the energy control panel was turning it off? Mine turns on EVERY morning at 3:10am even though I have unchecked the box for it to do that. It came that way from Apple and I thought it was so it could run the maintenance tools. I have no idea why it still turns on, but it's not a (future) problem that I know of.

  • IBook turning itself off

    Hi,
I've recently upgraded my iBook G4 to OS 10.5.8. Since then it's started turning itself off during use (at least, the screen goes black - I can't actually tell if the computer is completely off). It's invariably connected to mains power when this happens. I then have to force a restart (which in itself sometimes takes a bit of persuading - the last time I had to take the battery out first before it would even respond to the on/off button) to get it to work again.
If anyone has any advice, I'd appreciate it.

Sounds like the logic board is dead. This was a big problem with the iBook G4. I had this exact same problem and it would die with about 40 minutes left.. just randomly. I had to get a new logic board, which was about $300.

  • IBook Shutting Itself off

OK, So about a week ago, my iBook G4 decided it wanted to randomly shut itself off. This only happens on battery power, and usually happens when there's about 20% left on the battery.
My concern is that the computer is overheating. I am led to believe this because the fan doesn't turn on even if the computer is getting quite hot (I've got a program on my dashboard that says my CPU reaches 62 degrees).
    Help??
    1. Can I test the battery?
    2. Can I test the fan?
    Thanks

    sdg,
This only happens on battery power, and usually happens when there's about 20% left on the battery.
What does "About This Mac - More Info - Power - Battery"
What does that say. Esp cycle count.
Also just talked about a similar problem:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8945664#8945664
my graphics processor (bottomside) and processor bottomside SMART disk both hit around 68C before the fan kicked in.
Wow that seems very high to me. What's the ambient? 54C??
I have 2 1.2 12" and a 14" 1.2 GHz and never seen the CPU temperature above 38C never in the 40s. The upper limit is like 83C.
I would check the vents on the back of the iBook and make sure they're clear. It would take a technician to check the installation of the heat sink, thermal pads (that they're actually there) and esp the mounting studs on the CPU as I have seen those fail.

  • Ibook turns itself on???

Yes I turn my ibook off then 10 minutes later even if I have my screen locked down it will turn itself on, I have tried to find any system preferences for letting you're mac do this but I can't find anything

I had precisely the same problem with an iBook Dual USB. I reset the Power Management Unit (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449) and thought I had found a solution. But, when I plugged in my printer, the problem returned. I suggest you try disconnecting any peripherals when you put your iBook to sleep. The culprit in my case was an HP psc 1210 all-in-one printer.
I question whether the cycling of the display does any damage. While asleep, my iBook had been happily turning its display on and off for months.
    Good luck.

  • Why does iBooks switch itself off every time I try to open it?

I have a number of purchased books plus some PDF files 'Opened in IBooks' via emails, etc. However I am unable to open iBooks on my iPhone 4 as it shuts down immediately on showing the library.
Any suggestions, without losing all my purchases?

I am having exactly the same problem with my iPhone 4 (running 6.0.1 (10A523)). I have rebooted several times since this started occurring but it doesn't change the behavior. It was also reporting a "storage almost full" error quite often when I still have 1GB - 3GB of free space. As a troubleshooting exercise I removed all my music so there is now 20.1GB free. The storage warning no longer appears but the same issue still persists with reminders. Help, please!

  • Osx mavericks shutdowns by itself

Running latest OSX Mavericks 10.9.1 on MBP Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013.
Few days ago computer started to complete shutdown itself when I close lid for few hours. When I close it for some minutes, it works just fine (like it was before). When I keep it closed overnight or for 5+ hours, computer shutdowns. I see blank login and all programs are closed. And windows of opened programs are not opened (as when I press Reboot), only Finder.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • IMac suddenly shutdown by itself. Average time of work - around 5 min.

About year ago my iMac started to shutdown itself. First it was rare, then i forgot about this problem, and few months ago it started to do it again. And now it works no longer then five minutes.
But I found the one condition when it works well - when it works with opened display (i just unscrew display). I think the problem is in cooling system. And it could be shutsown when I gently punch it. So, maybe bad fan? Or I need to oil the fan? Any ideas?

    Here is a temperature:
First number for opened case, second for closed case.
    HDD 44 50
    CPU 32 44
    Airport 46.5 57
    Ambient 23 28
    GPU 42 53
    GPU diod 40 52
    GPU Heat 38 52
    HD Bay 44 48
speed of all fans is the same in any condition
only HDD fan is 1270 rpm when it closed.
this is the lines from system.log
    nothing special I think
