IBook shuts down after unplugging power adaper

Hello there...
My iBook G4 doesn't last for more than 10 minutes after I unplug the power adapter. I've checked some other posts and it looks like you need the information below before going any further. Any help on what I should do to remedy this problem?
Battery Information:
Battery Installed: Yes
First low level warning: No
Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 1209
Remaining Capacity (mAh): 1207
Amperage (mA): 0
Voltage (mV): 16593
Cycle Count: 250
Thanks,
Hagen

Hey Hagen,
I've got a brand new iBook 12" battery here in front of me. Just got it in the battery exchange program.
It was fully charged and I've been running it on battery for a bout 15 minutes.
Battery info:
Charge Remaining (mAh) 4136
Full charge capacity (mAh) 4400
Cycle count: 1
Condition: good
Amperage (mA): -1007
Voltage (mV): 11956
So that info that you gave us is w/ the iBook plugged in? The above was with it running on battery.
When this one is plugged in info changes to:
Amperage (mA): 1748
Voltage (mV): 12378
So you're battery seems really weak. The cycle count is pretty high and the capacity seems to be about 1/4 of new.
But run it on battery and give us that info again.
Li-Ion battery have an expected lifetime of 3-4 years whether you use them or not. Which surprised me.

  • Computer shuts down after unplugging the power cord

My computer is showing a Plugged in, not charging message, but it is at 88%.  When I unplug the charger from the computer to work somewhere else, the computer totally shuts down and will not power up unless the power charger is plugged in.  I tried taking the battery out and leaving the cord connected and the computer started fine.  How do I get the computer to stop shutting down after unplugging?  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like battery #2 has a short. When the system detects a critically low battery, it is likely to devote all power to battery charge until the batery reaches 5% or so. Try each battery seperately. If no power at any time, remove the battery, disconnect the AC adapter. Press the power switch for about ten seconds. Then connect the AC adapter, let it boot, then install the battery and check the charging status. This resets the power manager. I think one battery id bad, but you will need to test them one at a time. Good luck.

This is while on AC power. Can anyone help?

It runs on battery power but shuts down between 10% and 50% of usage. I had to replace my adapter after accidently kicking it while it was plugged into computer.  Since I bought a new adapter the battery indicator shows that it is charging until full charge.  The battery is bout two years old. May have damaged the dc board when I tripped over the original power cord.

  • IBook shuts down after upgrading from 10.3.3 to 10.3.9

Hi...I tried upgrading an old iBook G3 700 MHz from OS X 10.3.3 to 10.3.9 (combo). Now it won't finish
starting up. I press power, I do hear the chime and get to the point where the first screen with
the simple apple logo shows, but then after 5 seconds it shuts down again. I do hear the disk
    going briefly during this time.
I booted with the hardware diagnostics CD that came with the machine, and all tests passed OK
    - both the quick tests and the extended tests.
Wanted to just try reinstalling from the Panther CD set that I have, but I've found that I can't
boot from those CDs - does the same thing, shows the apple logo, then shuts down after 5 seconds.
I tried restarting in single user mode, it doesn't seem to get very far - I get the black screen, it
prints about 5 lines of information, then one line saying "Using 983 buffer headers..." and then
it shuts down. Seems like it's not getting far at all into the boot process.
Any thought's on what to try next? Wish I could just reinstall, wiping the slate clean, but even
    that doesn't work!
Thanks in advance for any help...
    - Bruce

    Success! This is so bizarre...
I have two Mac laptops, the iBook 700 MHz that's having the problem, and a newer
PowerBook G4. A few days ago I wanted to recharge the iBook...I've been very diligent
up to this point to use the correct charger with each laptop, the one that each came
    with.
I got lazy this last time...plugged the charger for the newer PowerBook into the
older iBook. Then I did the upgrade, and then I shut down the machine. It was after
that that I had problems restarting.
I got suspicious just now and looked at each charger. Thought they would be
interchangeable, but on looking at them the charger for the older iBook says output
is 24v 1.875A, while the one for the PowerBook is 24v 2.65A.
Knowing that there's a PMU (Power Management Unit) in these machines and that it
has settable parameters, I thought, what the heck, plug the correct charger back into
the iBook, just to see what happens. Voila, it started up OK!!!
    What the heck ?!?!
I'm pretty well versed in computers (work with Unix and Linux regularly, love the
Mac OS X command line!), just don't understand everything that goes on under the
hood with the Macs these days.
Just to get some final closure on this problem, can anyone explain why doing what
I did resolved the issue? I'd really like to learn from my mistakes.
Thanks to Rhonda and S.U. who responded so quickly for my plea for help!

  • MacBook Shuts Down After Unplugging Powercord Although Battery is Installed

    Hi,
Whenever I disconnect the power cord of my MacBook, the OS shuts down within 2-5 seconds. The battery is installed and it has a 80% health and it has 185 charge cycles. I've been experiencing this strange behavior after two days of installing (Secrets Preference Pane). But I'm not sure if it was behind the problem. I even uninstalled Secrets preference pane but the problem still exist.
At first I though the battery is dead, but for some reason I tried running the laptop later on the battery power and it ran for whole 2+ hours until it was fully discharged. I then charged the battery fully and used it again and it was working like a charm. But later the problem returned and the MacBook shuts down whenever it is not connected to the power cord. If the battery was dead, then how come it runs without a problem sometimes? also the health indicator shows that the battery is 80% healthy and the charging cycles is not much and whenever the system shuts down, the indicator on the bottom of the battery shows that it is fully charged.
I don't know what is causing the problem, and why sometimes the problem arises and sometimes it goes away.
I am using a 2007 white MacBook with the original battery (provided with the laptop). I am running Mac OS 10.6.2.
I tried several solutions such as:
    - Cleaning the battery and MacBook ports.
    - Resetting the PRAM.
    - Fully discharging the battery and then fully charging it.
But it seems that I am not able to resolve the problem. I would appreciate any provided help.
    Thanks,
    shaknon
Note: Here are two pictures that shows stats about the battery:
    1- http://jump.fm/SAOBW
    2- http://jump.fm/JBHYI

I am having identical issues as you described - although I haven't installed secrets preference pane (so I doubt that's involved).
My problem went on for hours one night, I got sick of dealing with it and went to sleep with AC adapter unplugged and macbook off. The next day, it worked fine all day long. Now here I am in the evening - had a power cut, AC adapter went off obviously, and MacBook powered off. Again now I have this problem.
I tried everything you've talked about (PRAM reset) as well as SMC reset, no change. My battery stats look great, says battery is healthy. This started happening to me a few days ago, I upgraded to 10.6 a few weeks ago.. not sure what caused this to start happening.
I found one VERY interesting thing, maybe you can check this: when I have the problem, with AC adapter unhooked, when I try to power up my MacBook it comes up for 2-5 seconds (sometimes until the apple tone, sometimes not), and turns off. If I HOLD THE POWER BUTTON for 5+ seconds the MacBook remains on, the white light on the front flashes, and I get a long tone. This procedure is supposed to be used for firmware updates or something. Anyway, when I do this, the computer comes up perfectly and it uses the battery. When I hook an AC adapter up, that works, but as soon as I unplug it I am back to the same problem. You should try this and see if it works for you, it may be a clue. If nothing else, it's a good way to still use your laptop if you are on the go and can't be dead in the water
My wife has a MacBook slightly newer than mine, I'm going to try her battery when possible to see if that solves the problem. I hesitate to go to the genius bar as they are terrible where I live and it's always been a waste of time
(Also, the battery update fails for me as well).

  • Computer shuts down after disconnecting power

Help!  My son has purchased the Envy 15 and loves it BUT we have an issue with the battery.  He has both batteries connected and the laptop plugged in.  He unplugs the laptop - both batteries are at 100% and within a minute, it shuts off.  It doesn't shut down, it's like it suddenly doesn't have power.  The machine will reboot, on the batteries, no problem - but of course, windows hasn't been shut down, so its not a "graceful" reboot.  When looking at the battery power after, Battery #1 is at 100% and Battery #2 is not present.  It obviously has power as we can reboot without reconnecting the power.  It only appears to happen when the second battery is connected.  We are on the HP recommended power plan with no adjustments.
When I plug it back in, it still says there is no second battery present.
    Help?  Any ideas?
Plus, does anyone know if you can lock the function keys - he does a ton of gaming and uses the function keys, so the direct action keys are not a plus for him.
    thanks!
    Caroline

  • Ibook shuts down after closing lid

So over the weekend my ibook g4 has shut down randomly after shutting the lid and going to sleep. When I open the lid the screen is black and nothing is happening. I cannot turn it on from the power button until after taking the battery out and putting it back in. this has happened maybe 3 or 4 times in just a couple of days.
any ideas of what this could be and how to fix it?
    thank you

When you shut the lid on your laptop, what does the sleep light do? if it comes on and blinks then its sleeping, and not waking up properly. However, if it isnt coming on, its not sleeping, its just crashing. Sometimes, they just have issues with sleeping. I'm going to recomend that you try installing a program called sleepless. what sleepless does is well stop your computer from sleeping. I used it on my iBook because i had the same problem, Here this is sleepless now after you install you need to choose the "prevent sleep with lid closed" keep in mind that you need to be an administrator to do this function. Doing this when you are running programs can sometimes result in overheating, but usually nothing serous, as long as you don't have anything running, and it takes more battery power to do this. so if your on battery power you can still put it to sleep manually (in the apple menu) and close the lid.

  • [Zen Micro] Keeps shutting down after unplugging from comput

I have owned this player for a year and three and a half months now. I had sent it in for repair before the warranty expired because I kept getting annoying feedback into my earphones. Unfortunately, they didn't fixed it and just sent it right back costing $25+S/H. I went on installing the firmware and loading my music up just fine, but when I unplug it from the computer, it shuts down. I tried several things such as reformatting the thing, but it didn't work and I hadn't checked out the sticky firmware thread so I just left the player alone very frustrated until now.
I managed to reload the firmware again thanks to that thread but I still have the automatic shut-down problem when disconnecting from the computer. I did noticed that after I unplugged it, the power bar wasn't there before it shut down.
Your ideas are appreciated but please make sure it's not about sending it back to them. It's out of warranty.
Note: It does work again after I replace the battery, but I don't want to do this every time I want to load music onto it.

Is there a sleep timer on the Micro? Did you check for that? (as opposed to Idle Shutdown)

    i don't think it's a baterry issue, i think it might be a software?????

  • Pavillion dv5 shuts down after ~5-10min on battery power?

11mo old laptop simply shuts down when running on battery power after only 5-10min after unplugging.
    - Battery gauge shows fully-chaged when I unplug it
    - No "low battery" warning or advice to plug in is given; it simply shuts off
If I try to turn it back on after it shuts down it will not power back on unless I plug the laptop back into the charger.
This never happens when plugged in to charger.
I know battery life can diminsh over time, but this came on all of a sudden; battery life was good (several hours) up until very recently. Now it just shuts down after a few minutes.
Appreciate any thoughts or advice - Thanks!

Laptop batteries can and do suddenly go bad. If one or two cells die, they can actually leach power from the other cells. The Smart chip inside the battery can actually go bad and shut the battery down even if the cells have power. The warranty on the battery is (usually) one year and if yours is 11 months old you can likely get HP to ship a new battery to you without returning the whole machine to them.

  • My computer shuts down after being unplugged

My powerbook G4 sometimes shuts down when I unplug it, even though the battery is fully charged. This seems to happen more often when I unplug it and then pick it up (or put it down). After I restart it, the clock and date have been reset to 1970.
Any ideas of what may be wrong?

    Hi c,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
How long does your PB run on the batt when it does not shut down after removing the power adapter? If a very short time, you may have a nearly dead batt, and the backup batt, even if it is still operational, only lasts a few minutes; once that is dead too, then date and time are reset.
I should have said this first, but just noticed that you said movement seems to cause the issue. That strongly suggests a loose battery. The "fix" can be as simple as wedging a thin piece of rubbery material between the battery compartment and the battery itself, on the side opposite the contacts, to make the contacts remain in contact at all times (earlier models had this issue, but it was supposedly fixed on later models, yet we still hear about it periodically).

  • Is there a way to prevent ibooks author from shutting down after just one or two uses of the alpha tool?

Is there a way to prevent ibooks author from shutting down after just one or two uses of the alpha tool?

Hello One Job at a time,
Deleting the application will not delete your projects.
Normally I keep all my work files on a separate drive.
If you command click on the title name of your project you will get a drop down path to show you the location of your book project.
or you can click on the drop down triangle beside its name to duplicate.
Just remember where you saved the file too.
In your applications folder on your computer select the iBA icon and press delete and also erase / empty the trash can.
You can then go back to the APP STORE and install iBA from new again.
    I hope this helps.
    Regards,

  • Mac book pro mid 2009 shuts down after a few hour then will only boot after waiting and pressing power button numerous times. I am running mountain lion with most recent updates.

Mac book pro mid 2009 shuts down after a few hour of use and then is very difficult to reboot. Sometimes I have to wait hours, sometimes I have to repeatedly press the power button and then it will slowly start a little longer each press untill it completely boots. It has done this three times know.  Each time I was watching a video.

Try running the Apple Hardware Test - sounds as if you've hardware issues.

  • When running on battery power, my MBP shuts down after 30 mins..please help

this has been happening for the last two weeks; whenever i run my MBP on battery, it goes blank/shuts down after about 30 mins...would start back on, but shut down even before the login screen comes! i checked the battery display under the laptop-it showed 3 green lights!! TIA!! i bought my MBP off the apple website last september!

With your symptoms, most likely, yes. If you have a 17" MBP, you are out of spec (based on Apple's specification of 80% health for 300 cycles). If you have a 15" MBP, you're in spec (84% health), but your symptoms indicate a problem (i.e. a defective battery). So, contact AppleCare!
You can't calibrate now. I asked because if a battery goes too long (150-220 cycles) without calibration, the "sudden loss of power" can result.
    Hope this helps...
Graham, that's why I inquired about calibration, but with the OP's cycle count, that's not the issue. Also, FYI the "battery condition" information is part of System Profiler with Leopard; the OP lists Tiger, and did post all the information available under Tiger.

  • Iphone 4 shuts down after disconnecting from power cable

My iphone 4 completely shuts down after disconnecting from power cord. The screen goes blank. However, if I re-plug the power supply it turns on with the date and time changed but my battery status is 86%.

Reset, hold both Home and Power buttons for about 15 seconds until iPhone restarts. If everthing is OK, great. If not, connect to iTunes and try to Restore the Firmware. If still problems, make appointment with Apple Genius for Warranty service.
